Editorial
Welcome in Lyons la Forêt
In the very heart of Normandy Vexin (eure), Lyons la Forêt
offers to foreign visitors some outstanding aspects of ancient
Normandy.
A hundred kilometers west of Paris, near main road (N14) to
Rouen, this peaceful countryside will be a perfect place for
your holidays.
In a timeless haven, you will walk through the old days in
an extraordinary environment. The architecture of Lyons
has been unchanged for centuries, and the town used to be
famous in the history of Normandy; monuments, castles,
manors, abbeys and museums can appear in sight at any
crossroads.
The protection of its outstanding natural site is already
a long story : the beech tree forest, known as the most
beautiful one in Europe, shelters many traditional farms
and mansions.
Do not think it takes a long time to escape from the stress of
modern life and find a peaceful place. Your dreams are just
nextdoor.
Just follow the tracks of Guillaume le Conquerant, Henry
the 1st Beauclerc, King Philippe Auguste, Saint Louis,
painter Paul Emile Pissaro, designer Paul Emile Ruhlman,

Discoveries
Lyons la Foret
Set in the middle of a national 10700 ha beech
tree forest, Lyons la Forêt welcomes you.
Registered as a “Station verte de vacances”
and as one of the “Most beautiful villages in
France”, this charming little town hosts 800
inhabitants, all very keen on keeping the
norman charms of their surroundings alive.
Built at the feet of a XIIth century fortress, the center of Lyons
surrounds the feudal site. The XVIIIth century covered market
is set in the middle of a square, bordered with ancient houses
of rose bricks and half timbers.
The town hall still hosts the bailly’s room, a XVIIIth century
justice court, with an extraordinary curtain dotted with lily
flowers, symbols of the kingdom of France. The ancient gaols
can also be visited.
Most of the houses lining in a row on main streets date back
to the XVIIIth century and church Saint Denis, by the creek
“Lieure” was built between the XIIth and XVIth centuries.
Many artists have been living in Lyons. Isaac Benserade
(a XVIth cent. French writer) was born there and Maurice Ravel
(a XXth cent. Composer) used to stay and compose in the village.
In 1932 Jean Renoir, then in 1990 Claude Chabrol, both
chose the streets and the market of Lyons a sceneries for their
film “Madame Bovary”, based on the novel by Flaubert.

The forest of Lyons
Known as the most beautiful
beech tree forest in Europe,
for ever a thousand years, and
spreading over more than
10700 ha; the forest of Lyons
is historically and naturally
incredibly rich.
Its long stemmed trees, much
like the columns of a natural
cathedral, and its thick bushes
provide shelter to a wide range
of animals : stags and does, roc
deers, boars, foxes can often be
seen.
Large
clearings have been cut into the woods
since the Middle Ages to set up villages
and cultures in quiet vales and sunny
hillsides.
Over 300 kms of beautiful paths are
open to walkers and cyclists. Maps of all marked circuits are
available at the Tourist Office.
Horses and riders are welcome too and will enjoy trotting
and cantering along some long straight tracks. They may also
come in autumn and winter and join a stag or roc deer hunt.
