PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Earlier this month, our students received their first term Ontario Provincial Report Card. We
encourage you to review this carefully as we move into the second term. Goal-setting, especially in the
Learning Skills area, as well as in the academic subjects will be essential in keeping your child “on track”
throughout the second term and help them focus in the soon-to-be-warm temperatures of spring.
Writing the goals down adds further commitment and energy to the process and does provide a
permanent record to refer back to in a few months.

FROM THE OFFICE
Bus Issues
This is snow season! The bus routes are
timed for regular traffic and weather
conditions, so if there is snow or
inclement weather, the routes will be
delayed. Parents are advised to check
the school bus website in the morning,
before your child goes to the bus stop.
School bus delays are listed, so you can
gauge the time more effectively. The
information is available at www.STOPR.ca
and is updated regularly.
Parents and students are also reminded
that bus drivers are only permitted to
pick up and drop off students at the
designated stop. If a child misses the
bus, the driver should not allow the
student on at another location.
If a child is planning to ride home on
another bus (to work with a partner on a
project, for example), the appropriate
STOPR form must be completed a day
before making the change, and permission
will be granted only if there is space on
the bus requested.
Ear Plugs, Head Phones and iphones
Just a quick reminder that we are
permitting students to use BYOD devices
in our classrooms for learning purposes.
However, students are not to be using ear
plugs, and/or head phones in the hallways
are not permitted for safety reasons.
Our hallways are congested at entrance
and dismissal time and students who are
not able to hear instructions or are
unaware of their surroundings presents
an unsafe situation for themselves and
others in the hallway and/or classrooms.
Your support with this safety rule would
be appreciated. Students may use the
ear plugs and/or head phones on the
buses if they wish.
Eric Walters Student Reflections
On January 31st, world renowned author,
Eric Walters, came in to Green Glade and
talked to our students about the
importance of literature, and encouraged
them to be a part of the writing process.
Eric Walters is 56 years old, and lives in
Mississauga, Ontario. Each year, he
speaks to over 125 000 students, many of
them across North America, and Green
Glade was lucky to be included in that
number. Eric Walters helps inspire
students by challenging them with various
role playing, interaction, and exercise of
their creative spirits. Eric Walters,
primarily an elementary teacher, has won
over 20 different awards and published
over 80 novels. His most recent novels
include Between Heaven And Earth, which
has been nominated for the Red Maple
award this year, The Rule Of THREE,
Enigma, My Name Is Blessing, and
Powerplay. I, for one, have recently read
Between Heaven and Earth, and it was a
very inspiring novel.
Eric Walters himself climbed Mount
Kilimanjaro to experience it, and
described the atrocities of the great
mountain in the point of view of his
character.

Grade 6 Science Is Egg-Citing
Scrambled eggs were definitely not on
the menu for our Grade 6 scientists last
week. To reinforce space concepts
connected to space craft construction
and life-support systems. Mr.s Porter’s
class were busy dropping their
customized egg lander with their valuable
cargo of one or two eggs. The spaceships
were creatively designed using such
household materials as paper rolls,
hangers, candy boxes, cardboard, and lots
of cotton batten!! With size and weight
requirements, the capsules were carefully
dropped from a ceiling height of 9 feet,
thanks to the OFFICIAL LAUNCHER and
Data Recorder Ms. Attia. The results
were very impressive-almost all
“passengers” survived the trip. Every
student made the capsule and
participated in the official launching –
that was AWESOME! Special recognition
goes to all the students for their
successful (and soft) landing of two eggs
without a crack using, among other things,
a rotor system, tubular design,
recycled/non-wasteful “Scrubbing
Bubbles” lander, marshmallow containers
and some decorative egg costumes!
