What are they saying?
Judge:At this point in the proceedings, I would like to suggest a break. I would ask the jury
to leave the court. The usher will show you out. We will begin again at ten to three.
Usher: All rise!

Did you know?
There are three different legal jurisdictions in
the United Kingdom: England and Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. They each have
their own legal system.
The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom,
however, is the highest court in the whole of
the United Kingdom. It is the final court of
appeal in the UK for civil cases, and for criminal cases in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Supreme Court first opened on 1 October
2009. Before that, the 12 most senior judges
— or “law lords” as they were called — sat in
the House of Lords. Now, the judicial authority
is no longe part of the House of Lords. The senior judges are completely separate from the
parliamentary process.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic…
In the US, a trial court establishes the facts
and applies the law. The appellate court
(court of appeals) makes sure the law is correctly applied. The U.S. Supreme Court, also
known as the”court of last resort”, is the highest level of appeal. In New York, however, the
highest court is the court of appeals and the
trial court is known as the supreme court.
