Einladung „CRC Geobiology Lecture Series“ (15. März.)
Einladung „CRC Geobiology Lecture Series“ (15. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Joachim Reitner “The Brotherhood of the Wolf: Symbionts Provide Antimicrobial Combination Prophylaxis to Beewolf Wasps” by Martin Kaltenpoth (Research Group Insect Symbiosis, MPI for Chemical Ecology, Jena, Germany) Abstract: Mutualistic microorganisms play a key role for nutrition or pathogen defense in many insects. Beewolves (digger wasps of the genera Philanthus, Trachypus and Philanthinus) engage in a unique symbiosis with Streptomyces bacteria that they cultivate in specialized glands in their antennae and transfer to the larval cocoon. Phylogenetic analyses reveal that hosts and symbionts experienced diffuse coevolution during the 65 million year old history of the symbiosis. The symbionts provide protection for the larva against fungal and bacterial pathogens by producing a complex cocktail of antibiotic substances. Thus, by means of their symbionts, beewolves employ a strategy comparable to the combination treatment used in human medicine as an efficient defense for their offspring against a broad range of detrimental microorganisms
