Lake Champlain, nestled between the Green

New York, was carved by ancient glaciers. Native
peoples have used its abundant resources for millennia.

When French explorer Samuel de Champlain entered
the lake on July 3, 1609, he noted Valcour Island in his
journal. Bluff Point, with its commanding view, later
bore witness to the pivotal Battle of Valcour (1776).

In 1888, Plattsburgh businessman Smith M. Weed
sold Bluff Point to the D&H Railroad, which built
the 5-story Victorian, wood-framed Hotel Champlain.
The hotel, which opened on June 17, 1890, had three
massive towers and seven cottages on the grounds.
Featuring the ultimate in "high society" luxury, the
resort left guests with no other demands upon their
time but recreation.

By 1893, the resort had added four more cottages and
a five-story annex, which was occupied by President
McKinley in the summers of 1897 and 1899. Other
notable guests included Presidents Taft, Harding,
and Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, New York
Governors Hughes and Smith, and baseball legend,
Babe Ruth.
On May 26, 1910, the hotel burned. It was rebuilt
the next year as a 200-room, steel and concrete
structure. The stock market crash of 1929 marked the
beginning of the end of the luxury hotel era. In 1951,
the property became Bellarmine College, a Jesuit
seminary that operated until 1967. Two years later
Clinton Community College opened its doors to 189
full-time students.
