Welcome to Saint-Etienne and thank you for choosing
Jean Monnet University!
Jean Monnet University offers a wide range of possibilities
such as degree programs and courses taught in English,
double-degrees (taught in French) operated abroad
and distance learning degrees.
Jean Monnet University enrols 20,000 students including
2,500 international students coming from 120 different
countries.
Across its campuses (located in Saint-Etienne, Roanne
and Firminy), Jean Monnet University is offering the choice
to study in French or in English depending on the fields
of studies.
Jean Monnet University is providing several international
degrees taught in English including our two Erasmus
+ Joint Master Degrees (JMD): COlour in Science and Industry
(COSI) and DYCLAM: Dynamics of Cultural LAndscapes
and heritage Management.
Jean Monnet University is the only European higher
education institution to coordinate two of these Masters
of excellence.
Jean Monnet University is also participating in a third
Erasmus + Joint Master Degrees (JMD) operated by
Claude Bernard Lyon-1 University: Leading International
Vaccinology Education (LIVE).
Opportunities for scholarships exist at Jean Monnet
University through application to some of our international
Master degrees.
With its 12 degree programs located in 6 different
countries (Equator, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Luxembourg,
Morocco, Tunisia), we are also offering to foreign students

Key statistics
Jean Monnet University combines friendliness, citylife as well as a high
quality natural environment. It is one of the greenest cities in France.
Founded in 1969, it is a comprehensive university offering nearly 300 programs
leading to national diplomas in fine arts, literature, languages, social sciences,
law, economics, business administration, political sciences, sports, health
and science & technology.

How to get
a residence permit
You are a European Economic Area
citizen: you will not have to apply
for a student visa. A valid identity
card or passport is sufficient.
European Economic Area: Austria, Belgium,
Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland,
Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania,
Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, The Netherlands,
Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Czech Republic,
The United Kingdom.
You are not a European Economic
Area citizen: you will have to apply
for a student visa before arriving
in France. Contact the French Embassy
or French Consulate in your country.
Please note that obtaining a long stay visa can
take several weeks or months. Your visa cannot
be modified in France.
Please make sure you obtain your french long
stay student visa of more than 3 months before
you leave your country (no tourist visa).

Financing
your stay
You may benefit from a student grant to finance
you mobility plan. You must contact the competent authorities in your country: ministry,
universities… before applying.
Campus France, the French agency for promotion
of French Higher Education abroad, lists all fundings
available for foreign students.
Opening a French bank account
Opening an account in a French bank
can be done easily and quickly.
We recommend it! It will allow you to:

Liability Insurance
Social security
This insurance covers personal injuries
or damage to property that may have
been caused by the student and is compulsory.
European Students
All international students will need
to provide a proof of liability insurance
to get their student card.
Students covered by their home country’s social security should obtain the
European Health Insurance Card from
their social security service provider
before coming to France.
This card (EHIC) must be valid for the
duration of the stay in France.

Courses offered at Jean Monnet University are based upon the European
Credit Transfert System (ECTS). According to this system, a full-time
student will obtain 60 credits for an academic year.
Those credits can be transferred within France and Europe. Those courses follow
the Bachelor-Masters-PhD format.

The CILEC (International Centre for Language and
Civilization) has more than 30 years experience
in teaching French. It hosts about 300 students
of many different nationalities.
The CILEC is welcoming you all year round, from
September to August included, both during the
academic year and summer. We offer extensive
or intensive classes, from 2 hours
to 20 hours a week, according
to your availability.
Upon your arrival, you will benefit from an assessment of your
French writing and speaking
skills in order to be part of the
group that suits you best, according to the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages, from A1 to C2.

The CILEC has a Media Library with more than 5000 books
available and French newspapers and magazines.
You can have an internet access on
computers, on a free use basis, to gain
access to online french learning activities such as CDs & DVDs and resources
from our training platform.
Centre for Self-Learning: students

training offer, can undertake a selflearning training in French.
