A Message from the Pastor
We are on a trip from here to there.
I wonder what it will be like when we get there?
After the funeral of Herbert B. I was sitting
together with several members of the
congregation and the following question came
up. What will it be like in heaven? Somehow
everyone around the table had the feeling it
would be boring: constant singing of Alleluia
and Hosanna. It would be just like the man
from Munich who came to be in heaven, but
who wants nothing more than to be sitting in
his beloved Hofbrauhaus with a glass of good
Munich beer. The strange part of all of this is
that some people say that they would rather be
in hell. It is just more fun there! It seems as if
Christians tend to connect God with boredom
and monotony rather than fun and a richness of
variety.
Do we have to constantly keep the
commandments and live without sin, while in
hell there is a party where the devil is the DJ? It
is as if heaven is sterile and hell is a “fun zone”
where you can finally do what really has been
forbidden by God. Where does this idea that
God is boring come from? When I look at
creation, at the interplay of nature, the massive
mountains, the endless oceans, the high trees
and the smallest flowers, then I really must
marvel and confess: God, who has created all
of this, is incredibly diverse, imaginative and
ingenious. God conceived all of this: the
colours of the rainbow, the expansive nature of
the Prairies, the form of the clouds, the
icebergs, the sand dunes… and this God is
boring? Paul Gerhard established the
connection between creation and eternity when
he wrote the following. “If in your boundless
love to us you scatter joy and bounty thus on
us poor erring mortals, What nobler glories will
be given Hereafter in your shining heaven
Within the golden portals! Within the golden
portals!`` If God has made this earth, which is
part of time and is ephemeral, so wonderfully
rich and diverse, will he not then have made
eternity even more beautiful and interesting?
All our descriptions, yes, even the descriptions
in the bible cannot quite describe what eternity
is like. The happiness, the comfort, the
gratification which we already find in Jesus
Christ are just a prepayment for the happiness
and laughter that will be.
Yeah, all of us together in eternity! I am really
looking forward to that.

News from the Congregation
•
Craig Hutchinson is resigning from
Church Council on August 31. He has
accepted a new position in Miramichi,
New Brunswick. We thank Craig for his
faithful service here at the church and
wish him all the best.
Happy Birthday to everyone with a birthday in
We wish you God’s blessing for the year to
come. In particular we congratulate Anton
Walter, Else Balsmeier, Karl Kraenzel, Else
Kraenzel and Elsie Dollekamp who have
birthdays in July. In August we congratulate
Douglas Shields, Elfriede Meyer and Alvine
Hibrecht.

You will remember that we had two
meetings of the congregation regarding
changes our constitution. Until the
Synod can ratify these changes in
November, Cathy Ferguson and Rita
Wagner have agreed to be part of
Church Council. When the changes are
ratified, David Berg, Waldemar Fischer
and Dennis Miles will replace Cathy and
Rita on Church Council. Thank you
Cathy and Rita for stepping in.
On June 2 we celebrated the baptism of Jasper
Walter Panke, son of Daniel Panke and Michelle
Seeman.
On June 29 Ashley Anne Draxler and Wayne
Marchand were married here in the sanctuary.
Melanie Dombek and Mike McGill will be
married in a ceremony conducted by Pastor
Schweter in July. We congratulate both couples,
wishing them God’s richest blessings on their
covenant.
We are saddened to announce the death of
Herbert Balsmeier who was a long-time
member of this church. Herbert died peacefully
on Sunday, June 16 and the funeral was held at
the Kane Funeral Home at 6150 Yonge Street.
Interment followed at the Bethesda Lutheran
Cemetery, Markham. Our sympathy goes to Else
and her family in this time of grieving for him.
Christ says, “I am the resurrection and the life.
Those who believe in me, even though they die,
will live." John 11:25
From the Desk of Church Council
•
Church Council has decided to suspend
Sunday School for the time being. As of
September there will be no Sunday
School offered during our church
services. If there are enough children
then we will certainly reinstate Sunday
School. We thank Stephanie von
Bargen for her work as Sunday School
coordinator and wish her all the best.
Confirmation
Congratulations to Anna Brunzema, Emmalie
Chu, Samantha Chu and Sylvia Gehring who
were confirmed here at the church on May 26.
Our church office will be closed from August
19 to September 9 while Astrid is on vacation.
The phone will be monitored every few days.
Pastor Schweter will continue to hold office
hours on Wednesday afternoon. Please call
him if you wish to see him during office hours.

We are planning a short program to showcase our talents on Sunday, September 15th, after
the joint service. Those who love to bake are invited to bring a sampling for the coffee-time.
All ages are welcome. All talents are welcome.
This is a wonderful way to share with others what God has given unto you.

A Believers Death
I’m standing on the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean. She’s an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until,
at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and the sky come down to mingle
with each other. And then I hear someone at my side saying, “There, she’s gone.”
Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as
she was when she left my side, And just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of
destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “There, she’s gone,” there are other eyes
watching her coming, an there are other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!”
And that is dying.

Eine Botschaft vom Pastor
„Fun-Szene“, wo man all das endlich tun darf,
was eigentlich (von Gott) verboten ist.
Woher kommt diese Idee, dass Gott langweilig
ist? Wenn ich mir die Schöpfung betrachte, das
Zusammenspiel der Natur, die gewaltigen
Berge, die endlosen Meere, hohe Bäume und
kleinste Blumen, dann muss ich staunend
bekennen: Gott, der all das geschaffen hat, ist
unwahrscheinlich vielfaltig, einfallsreich und
erfinderisch. Gott hat sich all das ausgedacht:
die Farben des Regenbogens, die Weiten der
Prärie, die Form der Wolken, die Eisberge, die
Sanddünen …. Und dieser Gott soll langweilig
sein? Paul Gerhard hat die Verbindung
zwischen der Schöpfung und der Ewigkeit
hergestellt, als er gedichtet hat: „Ach, denk ich,
bist du hier so schön und lässt du's uns so
lieblich gehen auf dieser armen Erden: was will
doch wohl nach dieser Welt dort in dem
reichen Himmelszelt und güldnen Schlosse
werden.“ EG 503 (9)
Wenn Gott schon diese Welt, die zeitlich und
vergänglich ist, so wunderbar reich und
vielfältig gestaltet hat, wird er dann nicht die
Ewigkeit noch viel schöner und interessanter
gestaltet haben?
All unsere Beschreibungen, ja, selbst die
Beschreibungen, die wir in der Bibel finden,
können nicht ganz beschreiben, wie es in der
Ewigkeit sein wird. Die Freude, der Trost, die
Erfüllung, die wir schon heute im Glauben an
Jesus Christus finden, sind nur eine Anzahlung
auf die Freude und das Lachen, das sein wird.
Vom Schreibtisch des Pastors
Als ich nach der Beerdigung von Herbert B. mit
Einigen aus unserer Gemeinde zusammen
saß, da kam die Frage auf: Wie wird es wohl
im Himmel sein? Und irgendwie hatten alle am
Tisch ein Gefühl von Langeweile: Für immer
und ewig Halleluja und Hosianna singen, so
wie der ‚Münchner im Himmel‘, der nichts lieber
wollte, als wieder in seinem geliebten
Hofbräuhaus zu sitzen und eine Maß gutes
Münchner Bier zu trinken.
Das Merkwürdige ist ja, dass manche
Menschen sagen, sie kämen lieber in die Hölle,
da hätte man mehr Spaß. Es scheint, dass
selbst Christen mit Gott eher Langeweile und
Eintönigkeit
und
nicht
Spaß
und
Abwechslungsreichtum verbinden. Müssen wir
also im Himmel ständig die Gebote einhalten
und sündfrei leben, während in der Hölle die
Party tobt und die Teufel für uns DJ spielen?
Als ob der Himmel steril wäre und die Hölle die
Hurra, wir zusammen in der Ewigkeit! Ich freue
mich darauf.

Pastor Schweter wird vom 3. bis 7 Juli in
Ottawa auf der gemeinsamen Synode der
ELCIC und der Anglikanischen Kirche in
Kanada sein.

Vom Kirchenvorstand
• Der Kirchenvorstand hat beschlossen
vorläufig
keine
Sonntagsschule
anzubieten. Falls wir wieder mehr
Kinder haben, wird die Sonntagsschule
auch wieder weitergemacht. Wir bitten
um Ihr Verständnis. Wir danken
Stephanie von Bargen für ihre Arbeit
und wünschen ihr alles Gute.
• Craig Hutchinson tritt ab 31. August
vom Kirchenvorstand zurück. Er hat
eine neue Stelle in Miramichi, New
Brunswick. Wir wünschen ihm viel
Erfolg und hoffen ihn auch mal hier in
der
Kirche
wiederzusehen.
Wir
bedanken uns für seine Mitarbeit hier in
der Kirche.
• Sie werden sich daran erinnern, dass
wir
im Frühjahr 2 Abstimmungen
hatten, um unsere Konstitution zu
ändern. Wir muessen jetzt warten bis
die Synod das ratifizieren wird was
voraussichtlich im November passiert.
Bis dahin werden Cathy Ferguson und
Rita Wagner auf vorläufiger Basis im
Vorstand
mitarbeiten.
Wenn
die
Änderungen ratifiziert sind, dann
werden David Berg, Waldemar Fischer
und Dennis Miles Cathy und Rita im
Kirchenvorstand ersetzen. Wir danken
Cathy und Rita, dass sie das machen.
Konfirmation
Wir freuen uns mit Anna Brunzema, Emmalie
Chu, Samantha Chu und Sylvia Gehring, die
am 26. Mai eingesegnet wurden.
Am 2. Juni wurde Jasper Walter Panke, Sohn
von Daniel Panke und Michelle Seeman, hier
im englischen Gottesdienst getauft. Wir
wünschen dem Kind und den Eltern Gottes
Segen.
Es ist unsere traurige Aufgabe Ihnen
mitzuteilen, dass Herbert Balsmeier am 16.
Juni verstorben ist. Die Trauerfeier mit
anschließender Beisetzung fand am 20. Juni
statt Unsere Gedanken und Gebete sind bei
Else und ihrer Familie.
Unser Kirchenbüro wird vom 19. August bis 9.
September geschlossen sein. Wir werden das
Telefon alle paar Tage abhören. Pastor
Schweter wird weiterhin seine Sprechstunde
am Mittwochnachmittag abhalten. Bitte rufen
Sie ihn an, wenn Sie einen Termin machen
wollen. Im Notfall rufen Sie ihn zu Hause an
(416-208-5862).
Die Hochzeit von Ashley Draxler und Wayne
Marchand fand am 29. Juni hier in unserer
Kirche statt.
Melanie Dombek und Mike McGill werden im
Juli von Pastor Schweter getraut.
Wir gratulieren beiden Paaren und wünschen
ihnen Gottes Segen für ihren gemeinsamen
Lebensweg.
Die Senioren feierten den Sommeranfang mit
einem großen Essen und Feier hier in der
Kirche. Sie treffen sich am 4. September
wieder hier bei uns
