Herstellungsverfahren
Ätherisches Rosenöl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation der Blüten der Damaszener-Rose (Rosa
damascena) gewonnen. Dabei dient heißer Wasserdampf als Trägerstoff für die leicht flüchtigen
organischen Komponenten. Durch die Nicht-Mischbarkeit der organischen Bestandteile des
ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet beim Abkühlen eine spontane Phasentrennung statt, so dass
das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden kann. Die sehr geringe Ausbeute liegt zwischen 0.02 und
0.03%.[1,2]
Manufacturing method
Essential rose oil is obtained by water steam distillation of blossoms of the Damask rose (Rosa damascena). Hot
water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds. Due to the non-miscibility of the organic
compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon cooling and the essential oil can be easily separated. The
very low yield is between 0.02 and 0.03%.[1,2]
Botanischer Ursprung des ätherischen Rosenöls
Die Art Damaszener-Rose (Rosa damascena) gehört zur Gattung der Rosen
(Rosa, Unterfamilie: Rosoideae) in der Familie der Rosengewächse
(Rosaceae), die in der Ordnung der Rosenartigen (Rosales) steht.
Schätzungsweise gibt es über 30.000 verschiedene Rosensorten weltweit.
Die Damaszener-Rose gilt als Kreuzung aus der Essigrose (Rosa gallica)
und Rosa phoenicia oder Rosa moschata. Die Damaszener-Rose wird bereits
seit dem 13. Jahrhundert kultiviert und stammt aus Kleinasien. Die
Vertreter der Damaszener-Rosen zeichnen sich durch einen betörenden
Duft aus. Rosen sind strauchige Pflanzen, deren Triebe später verholzen. Die Fiederblätter stehen
wechselständig, sind einfach oder geteilt. Die Triebe haben hakenförmige Stacheln (keine Dornen).
Vorwiegende Blütenfarben sind weiß, rot, rosa und gelb. Die Sommer-Damaszener-Rose blüht
zwischen Mai und Juni, die Herbst-Damaszener-Rose zwischen Juni und Oktober. Die Blüten der
Damaszener-Rose sind gefüllt und daher häufig steril. Ansonsten bilden sich nach der Bestäubung
Scheinfrüchte aus, die sogenannten Hagebutten. In ihnen befinden sich die Samen der Rose.[3]

Botanical origin of essential rose oil
The type Damask rose (Rosa damascena) belongs to the genus of Roses (Rosa, subfamily: Rosoideae) in the Rose
family (Rosaceae), which is in the order of Rosales. It is estimated that there are over 30.000 different varieties of
roses worldwide. The Damask rose is regarded as intersection of vinegar rose (Rosa gallica) and Rosa phoenicia
or Rosa moschata. The Damask rose is cultivated since the 13th century and comes from Asia Minor. The
representatives of Damascene roses are characterized by a heady scent. Roses are shrubby plants whose shoots
become woody later. The pinnate leaves are alternate, are simple or divided. The shoots have hook-shaped spines
(no thorns). Predominant flower colors are white, red, pink and yellow. The summer Damask rose blooms from
May to June, the autumn Damask rose between June and October. The flowers of the Damask Rose are filled and
therefore sometimes sterile. Otherwise, false fruits are formed after pollination, the so-called rose hips, which
contain the seeds of the rose.[3]
Charakterisierung
Ätherisches Rosenöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, meist hellgelb bis gelb gefärbte Flüssigkeit. Der Geruch
wird als charakteristisch rosig und blumig beschrieben. Ätherisches Rosenöl löst sich in Alkohol
(Ethanol), in Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Es ist nahezu unlöslich in Wasser.
Charakteristische Bestandteile sind Citronellol und Geraniol. In geringeren Mengen enthält
ätherisches Rosenöl noch Methyleugenol (bis 5%), Eugenol (bis 3%), Linalool, Citronellal, PinenIsomere, Phenylethylalkohol und Citral. Ätherisches Rosenöl zählt zu den komplexesten ätherischen
Ölen mit über 400 bekannten Komponenten.[2,4]
Characterisation
Essential rose oil is a mobile, mostly light yellow to yellow coloured liquid. The scent is described as
characteristic like rose and bloomy. Essential rose oil is soluble in alcohol (ethanol), in vegetable oils and other
essential oils as well. It is virtually insoluble in water. Characteristic ingredients are citronellol and geraniol.
Essential rose oil contains methyl eugenol (up to 5%), eugenol (up to 3%), linalool, citronellal, pinene isomers,

phenyl ethyl alcohol and citral in lesser amounts. Essential rose oil is one of the most complex essential oils with
over 400 known components.[2,4]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Den Inhaltsstoffen des ätherischen Rosenöls wird eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften nachgesagt. Die Rose und deren Zubereitungen (ätherisches Öl, Rosen-Absolue und
Rosenwasser) werden bereits seit sehr langer Zeit für medizinische und kosmetische Zwecke
verwendet. In Russland wird ätherisches Rosenöl als einfaches Mittel bei Leber- und
Gallenbeschwerden geschätzt. Neuere Studien haben gezeigt, dass ätherisches Rosenöl antiviral und
bakteriostatisch wirkt. Es kann bei chronischer Bronchitis, Windpocken, Herpes labialis und Zoster als
Zusatz zu Massageölen oder Auftragung eingesetzt werden. Ätherisches Rosenöl zeigt ebenfalls
fungizide Wirkungen gegen Candida albicans, wenn es als Einreibung auf der betroffenen Stellen
eingesetzt wird. Ätherisches Rosenöl hat zudem starke hautregenerierende Eigenschaften. Es wirkt
epithelisierend bei Dermatitis, Ulzera, Furunkel, Couperose und Wunden. Es kann auch bei Aphten
und Gingivitis auf den betroffenen Stellen aufgetragen werden. Zudem gilt ätherisches Rosenöl auch
als Stärkungsmittel und wirkt generell tonisierend und neurotonisch. [4,5]
Ölmischung bei kardialen Problemen während des Klimakteriums:

2 Tr. Sandelholzöl
30 mL Mandelöl
Die ätherischen Öle werden im Mandelöl gelöst. Die Mischung wird 3- bis 4-mal täglich auf das
Sternum aufgetragen.
Medical use, phytotherapy
The ingredients of essential rose oil seem to have a number of health-relevant properties. The rose and their
preparations (essential oil, rose absolute and rose water) have been used for a very long time for medical and
cosmetic purposes. In Russia, essential rose oil is valued as a simple means for liver and gall bladder problems.
Recent studies have shown that rose oil acts antiviral and bacteriostatic. It can be used for chronic bronchitis,
chickenpox, herpes labialis and herpes zoster as an additive to massage oils or ointment. Essential rose oil also
shows fungicidal effects against Candida albicans when it is used as a rub of the affected areas. Essential rose oil
also has strong skin regenerating properties. It acts epithelizing in dermatitis, ulcers, boils, rosacea and wounds.
It can also be applied on the affected area in canker sores and gingivitis. In addition, essential rose oil is also as a
tonic and acts generally toning and neurotonic.[4,5]

The essential oils are dissolved in almond oil. The mixture is applied to the sternum 3 to 4 times a day.
Aromatherapie
In der Aromatherapie wird ätherisches Rosenöl als entspannendes und sedierendes Öl geschätzt. Sein
warmer und weicher Duft soll Ängste und Anspannungen lösen, Reizbarkeit und Wut mildern.
Zudem wird ätherisches Rosenöl auch als Mittel gegen Schlaflosigkeit empfohlen. Die Anwendung
kann in der Duftlampe oder als Auftragung von einem Tropfen ätherischem Öl auf dem Puls
erfolgen.[4,5]
Aromatherapy
In aromatherapy, essential rose oil is valued as relaxing and sedating oil. It’s warm and soft scent is believed to
solve anxiety and tension, and to soften irritability and anger. In addition, essential rose oil is recommended as
remedy for insomnia. The application can be made in the aroma lamp or as application of a drop of the essential
oil on the pulse.[4,5]

Ätherisches Rosenöl gilt als eine wertvolle Zutat in der Komposition von Düften und Kosmetika. Sein
warmer, blumiger Duft bereichert nicht nur Parfüms, sondern auch pflegende Kosmetik, da
ätherisches Rosenöl starke hautregenerierende Eigenschaften besitzt. Es wird gern in Produkten für
gestresste oder alternde Haut eingesetzt. Ätherisches Rosenöl eignet sich sehr gut für Mischungen
mit Bergamotte, Grapefruit, Geranie, Jasmin, Lavendel, Muskatellersalbei, Patchouli, Sandelholz,
Thymian und Zedernholz.[2,5]
Use in Cosmetic
Essential rose oil is considered a valuable ingredient in the composition of perfumes and cosmetics. It’s warm,
floral fragrance enriches not only perfume, but also care cosmetics, as essential rose oil has strong skin
regenerating properties. It is often used in products for stressed or aging skin. Essential rose oil is very suitable
for mixtures with bergamot, grapefruit, geranium, jasmine, lavender, clary sage, patchouli, sandalwood, cedar
and thyme.[2,5]
Verwendung in der Küche
Ätherisches Rosenöl wird als Aromastoff für viele Arten von Lebensmitteln verwendet. Insbesondere
in der orientalischen Küche wird das Aroma der Rose besonders geschätzt, z. B. für Süßwaren. In
Fruchtsäften und alkoholischen Getränken kann der Zusatz von ätherischem Rosenöl zu einer
deutlichen Geschmacksverbesserung führen.[2]

Use in kitchen
Essential rose oil is used as a flavoring for many kinds of food. Especially in the oriental cuisine, the aroma of
the rose is particularly appreciated, e.g. for sweets. In fruit juices and alcoholic drinks, the addition of essential
rose oil can lead to a significant improvement in taste.[2]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Rosenöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich einzustufen.
Citronellol, Geraniol, Citronellal, Citral, Linalool, Eugenol und Methyleugenol haben ein allergenes
Potential. Eugenol und Methyleugenol gelten als karzinogen und mutagen. Phenylethylalkohol reizt
die Schleimhaut der Augen. Pinen-Isomere können bei dermaler Anwendung bei empfindlichen
Personen zu Hautreizungen und Ekzemen führen, bei oraler Aufnahme sind Nierenreizungen
möglich. Ätherisches Rosenöl sollte nicht in hoher Konzentration bei Schwangeren, Säuglingen und
Kleinkindern verwendet werden. Beachten Sie auch die Hinweise im Sicherheitsdatenblatt und der

Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential rose oil are classified as hazardous to health. Citronellol, geraniol,
citronellal, citral, eugenol, methyl eugenol and linalool have an allergenic potential. Eugenol and methyl eugenol
are considered to be carcinogenic and mutagenic. Phenyl ethyl alcohol irritates the mucous membrane of the
eyes. When applied dermal, pinene isomers can lead to skin irritation and eczema in susceptible individuals,
when taken orally, kidney irritations are possible. Essential rose oil should not be used in high concentrations in
pregnant women, infants and young children. Also note the references in the material safety data sheet and the
product specification.[2,4,5]
