qualifications are necessary for a successful career? Which personal commitment is required
for future success within a company? How should I prepare the application documents to
be invited for a job interview?
You will find the answers to these and other questions on the following pages.
I wish you the best for your career and a successful start into your professional life!

2. CAREER CENTER
The purpose of the IMC Career Center is the systematic development and administration of
a network between the industry, organizations and the IMC University of Applied Sciences
Krems.
The IMC Career Center offers special career services for both students and graduates. (e.g.
cv-check, job platform). In addition, the IMC Career Center supports students before, during, and after their mandatory training semester.
Companies have the possibility to place job advertisements on the IMC job platform www.
careerlinks.at. Internship offers are directly passed on to our students.
Career Center Events
Career Links – the IMC Career Fair takes place every year and offers current students,
graduates and organizations the possibility to network and get to know one another.
Management Dialogue – is an exclusive series of events where top management
executives are invited to a presentation followed by a discussion with students.
Career Lounge – offers organizations from relevant industry sectors the opportunity to
network with a group of interested students and to present their company and have a
discussion afterwards.
Company visit – a limited number of students have the chance to visit a company and
get an exclusive insight in the organization.
On Campus Recruiting – organizations have the possibility to get in contact with
students directly on the IMC campus and present their organization.
The IMC Career Center wants to support students and graduates for their future career.
We wish you great success!

3. STARTING YOUR CAREER!
3.1. WHEN SHOULD YOU START SEARCHING FOR A JOB?
Your studies are coming to an end and the last
exams have to be taken. In addition to the preparation for their final exams, graduates should
think about their career goals. Experience tells
us, that students need several weeks or even
months to find an appropriate job.
At first you have to decide which line of business you would like to work in. You have to identify your skills and competencies to determine your career prospects and job opportunities that are realistic and match your interests.
Get to know your own goals and future plans:
In which line of business would you like to work?
Do you want to work for an international organization or in a national company?
How important is job security, money and prestige to you?
Are you flexible in the choice of your work place?
What are your greatest professional strengths and what do you find most
challenging?
What are your long term professional goals?
After answering all these questions you are a step further. Now you are ready to search for
a suitable job.
3.2. HOW SHOULD YOU START SEARCHING FOR A JOB?
A lot of universities offer their own job platforms, where job advertisements for graduates
are placed.
Organizations often place job advertisements on their own websites and provide online
application forms.
Starting your career!
4
Another opportunity to get into contact with organizations are career fairs which are organized by universities. Career fairs offer students, graduates and organizations the possibility
to network and get to know one another.
As a job seeker, you could also have a look at local newspapers, e.g.: Presse, Standard, Kurier. At weekends newspapers include special career pages with job advertisements.
You can look for jobs at online job portals as well. These online job portals provide guided
searches.

3.3. HOW TO INTERPRET JOB ADVERTISEMENTS?
Once you see a job advert which interests you,
read it carefully. Sometimes, the first challenge on the way to a job is to understand the
advert.
Job advertisements normally consist of a role
description and personal specifications. The
role description tells you all the details you
need to know about the job. The personal
specifications describe the type of person they

A typical job advert includes:
job title
location
working hours
duties
experience
essential qualifications
salary
Read the job advertisement carefully, there are often differences between essential and
desirable needs.
Required skills:
“You must have…“
“You are…“
“It is essential that you…“
Additional skills:
“Ideally…“(e.g.: ideally you are ready have gained several years of professional
experience.)
“... would be an advantage“ (e.g.: additional language skills would be an advantage.)
If you match most criteria – then you should apply. You don’t have to comply with all the
needs.

accordingly.“

4. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS - AUSTRIA
You have found an interesting position corresponding to your abilities. Now you have to
impress your prospective employer with your application. As you know: The first impression
counts!
What should/could your application include?
Cover sheet
Cover letter*
Curriculum vitae *
Certificates*
Items marked with * should be part of your application
documents.
Some tips, you should consider before writing your application:
Avoid mass mailing!
Try to find out the person who is responsible for personnel matters.
If you have any questions, contact the organization.
Read and review the application documents for their completeness before transmitting
them to the employer.
Avoid any kind of mistakes, e.g. misspelled words, incomplete information etc.
TIP EXPERT:
“First impression counts – also on paper. There is never a second
chance to make a first impression.“
Mag. Christiane Altendorfer – karriere.at
4.1. COVER SHEET
A cover sheet is not absolutely necessary, but it can help to set you apart from other applicants and could increase your chances in the application process.
Application documents - Austria
8
Create an attractive cover sheet. The cover sheet could include the following:
name
address and telephone number
e-mail address
photo
job title
content of the application folder/dossier
4.2. COVER LETTER
Cover letters can also be referred to as letters of motivation. You really need to promote
yourself and grab the interest of the reader.
The cover letter should be brief and precise and not longer than one page.
You might ask yourself: what should my cover letter include?
Try to answer the following questions with your cover letter:
How did I hear about the vacancy?
Why do I apply for this position?
Which qualifications necessary for the job do I have?
How can I contribute to the success of the company?
Why should the company choose me?
The cover letter should contain:
an introduction
a main part and
a closing
The first paragraph should explain why you are interested in this job and where you heard
about it. You should also state why you are interested in the company.
The main part should highlight your skills, knowledge and experience. Explain clearly why
you are the right person for this job and how the company can benefit from your qualifications.
Application documents - Austria
9
At the end of the cover letter state your interest in the position again and ask for a personal
interview.
Tips for writing cover letters:
Address your cover letter to a person by his/her name.
Keep your cover letter brief and precise.
Formulate short and simple sentences.
Use an easily legible font.
Avoid spelling and grammar mistakes.
Create your cover letter clearly.
Use a professional tone.
Don’t send mass e-mails, prepare each cover letter individually.
Don’t repeat the content of the job advertisement.
Describe the benefit for the organization if the hire you.
4.3. CURRICULUM VITAE
A Curriculum Vitae includes information about
your person, your education, your professional
experience and your skills. The CV of a graduate should usually be no longer than two pages. The CV is a marketing tool to prospective
employers. An excellent CV can open the door
to a personal interview.
The CV should be brief and include the most important stages of your life.
A CV is generally drafted in reverse chronological order.
You don’t have to state your entire education. It is sufficient to specify the highest
school qualification.
Graduates with little work experience could specify their internships.
It is important to highlight your skills relevant for the position.
Write a brief description of your duties to all listed jobs.

5. APPLYING IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY
When you are interested in an internship or a position abroad then you have to draft country-specific application documents.
5.1. APPLYING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
In the United Kingdom it is common practice to identify the person responsible for the
application process before starting your application. You should draft a cover letter and a
curriculum vitae. You don’t have to attach your certificates. It is also not necessary and not
common to enclose a photo.
Cover letter: The cover Letter is a motivation letter of one page. It starts with an introduction (answer the following questions: Why are you applying for this job? Where did you hear
about the job vacancy?), include a main part (in this part you should state your qualifications and skills which are relevant for the job) and wind up with a closing, in which you ask
for a personal interview.
Curriculum vitae: The curriculum vitae is a summary of your education, work experience and
your skills. The CV shouldn’t be longer than two pages. A CV is generally drafted in reverse
chronological order.
Personal details (name, address - but not – date of birth, religious confession, marital
status)
Career profile (3-4 sentences, regarding your strengths and skills)
Work experience
Education
Additional skills (languages, IT-skills)
Interests
References (contact details of 2-3 persons)
Applying in a foreign country

5.2. APPLYING IN THE UNITED STATES
In the United States application documents consist of a cover letter and a résumé. The cover
letter is structured as it is in the United Kingdom.
The résumé is a summary of your education, work experience and your skills. Do not enclose photographs with your résumé. The résumé should include the following information:
Personal details (name, address – but not – age, marital status)
Career objective or profile (3-4 sentences regarding your objective and your strengths)
Qualifications (languages, IT-skills)
Work experience
Related experience (e.g. memberships, awards)
Education
References (optional)
The résumé is also drafted in reverse chronological order.

6. ADDITIONAL JOB APPLICATION
OPPORTUNITIES
6.1. UNSOLICITED APPLICATION
Unsolicited applications are useful if you are interested in an organization which doesn’t
offer a job vacancy. When you apply on speculation, it is advantageous if you hand in your
application directly to the person who is in charge of the recruitment procedure. You should
state why you are interested in working with the company and how the company could benefit from your skills and qualifications. The advantage of an unsolicited application is that
no other applicant is competing with you.
6.2. ONLINE APPLICATION
Many organizations provide their own online portals for applications. If this is the case – use
it! For organizations it is easier to analyze lots of applications using online portals. If you
transmit your application via an online portal, be as careful as if sending a traditional application. Online application portals usually ask for your contact information, educational
background and your work experience. Some organizations ask you to register and create
your own account on their website for your application. Try to answer all questions fully.
Applicants who do not fill in all information are the first to be eliminated.
6.3. WEB 2.0
Many organizations use the internet as an active medium to get in contact with potential applicants. Online platforms like Xing and LinkedIn are well-known
examples of networking.
Organizations can present themselves creatively (e.g.:
information about the organization, videos, and pictures). You as an applicant get an insight into an organization and could have the possibility to attend various company events.
Web 2.0 simply means networking. You can establish, widen and maintain your contacts via
online platforms.
Additional job application opportunities
18
Xing is mainly used in Europe. The platform enables you to create your own profile. So you
are visible for organizations and recruiters. You have the possibility to interact with other
members in special communities.
Linked-In is an international online platform. If you act internationally, you should create a
profile on Linked-In.
6.3.1. Your online presence
Organizations and recruiters use the internet to get more information about the applicant
or prospective employee. Your online presence consists of all the information about you in
the internet, i.e. be careful about your postings on social media platforms.
Tips for your online presence:
Private contents should only be visible for family members and friends. There are
special privacy settings on social media platforms.
Before starting your application process, screen your own online presence using search
engines.
Choose posted pictures carefully.
Update your profile regularly.
Be careful what you write about in blogs and communities. Posts, comments and
pictures are always visible.
Be polite and businesslike in your communications.
6.4. CAREER FAIRS
Career fairs are a brilliant opportunity to get in contact with organizations and future employers. Many universities organize career fairs where students and graduates have the
chance to learn about career opportunities. Besides job networking career fairs provide
workshops and career coaching.
Try to get information about the organizations presented at the job fair. Within a single day,
you’ll have the chance to meet employers from several industries.
To be effective at a career fair, you need to be prepared to make a good impression in
person. Prepare a presentation of yourself, including your education, work experience and
Additional job application opportunities
19
your strengths. Explain why you have chosen this organization.
Application documents: Create application documents, so that you can take printed
copies of your curriculum vitae to the career fair.
Take some time for further offers at the career fair, e.g. career coaching, styling and
photo shooting.
Suitable outfit: business casual is usually the most appropriate at a career fair. Note:
First impressions at a career fair are important.
Take enough time, make breaks to drink a glass of water or to take notes.
During your conversations with employers show
your interest, listen, maintain eye contact and take
time to get additional information.
After your visit at the job fair, stay in touch with the
employers that interest you most.

7. ADMISSION PROCEDURES
7.1. THE JOB INTERVIEW
Congratulations – you are invited to an interview. You have presented yourself well through
your application documents. Now you have to impress the employer face-to-face.
The representatives of an organization are trying
to find out more about you, your skills and your
experience during the interview. They are eager to
learn about:
your personality
your competences
your achievements / motivation
7.1.1. Preparation for the interview
If you want to be convincing, prepare yourself well for the interview. Inform yourself about
the organization, go through your application documents and have a look at the job advertisement again. As you know, the first impressions often determine whether you get the job
or not.
It is still important to dress professionally for a job interview. Try to find out the company’s
dress code. Your clothes should be clean and neat. Make sure you feel comfortable in your
clothes.
TIP GRADUATE OF THE IMC FH KREMS:
“Be yourself! Authenticity is the most important element in an
interview! Be prepared for the interview!“
Nina Tosin, MSc – Careerteam GmbH
For men: A suit is the appropriate attire. Wear a tie in a conservative colour to your
suit. You can also choose a combination of a jacket and matching trousers.
Admission procedures
22
For women: Women can wear a suit or a dress. You should always wear tights. Take
care of a discreet make up and don’t wear too high heels.
Always be on time for the interview. Try to arrive 15 minutes earlier. Don’t forget to arrange
enough time for your arrival.
7.1.2. Typical questions in the job interview
Tell us something about you!
Why did you choose this kind of education?
What are your personal strengths and weaknesses?
How would your friends describe you?
Why did you apply for this job?
What do you know about our organization?
What has been your greatest challenge?
How do you handle stressful situations?
Are you a team player?
How do you solve problems?
Why should we hire you?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Which expectations do you have for this job?
What are your salary expectations?
Where else have you applied?
How do you spend your free time?
Do you have any questions?
7.1.3. Inappropriate questions
It is possible that recruiters ask inappropriate questions. We would like to give you a short
overview which questions you don’t have to answer/answer correctly or which questions are
not allowed respectively.
Questions about a current or planned pregnancy
Questions about religion or political affiliations

Questions about your health status (exception: If your health status is relevant for
the exercise of the profession)
Questions about previous criminal convictions
At the end of the job interview: make sure you have asked all the questions you prepared
and thank the interviewer for their time. Express your interest on the job again and ask - if
it was not mentioned before - how the application process will go on.
7.2. EMPLOYMENT TESTS
Some companies give job candidates personality tests as part of the hiring process. By means of such tests the organization wants to find out more about your personality. IQ tests
can also be part of the recruiting process. They are conducted to measure the applicant`s
intelligence.
7.3. ASSESSMENT CENTER
Assessment centers are an important instrument to determine the qualifications of a candidate. Several applicants
and observers take part in an assessment center. Assessment centers are particularly used for hiring managers
and executives. Self-presentations, group discussions, intray exercises and case studies are typical components of
an assessment center. An assessment center process can take several hours or even several
days. Competencies like teamwork skills and conflict handling skills are tested. Before you
take part in an assessment center, inform yourself precisely about the organization and the
vacancy, so that you feel well-prepared and can act self-confident. Even if you are working
together with competitors in an assessment center, be fair and treat each other with respect. And don’t forget, you are being observed during the whole assessment center procedure, even during breaks and evening events.
7.4. THE COMPANY’S DECISION
Once you have transmitted your application documents and talked to the recruiter personally, you have to wait. Have you convinced the organization? Has the organization convinced
you as well? You don’t have to take the first job offer, it is more important to choose the

organization and the job you are really interested in.
Are you still waiting for an answer? After approximately two weeks you can ask for a reply
in a friendly manner.
You have got the job! Look forward to your new duty! You have mastered the application
process very well. If you have more job offers, choose the job you feel most comfortable
with. After opting for a position, make sure you cancel the other job offers.

8. INTERNSHIPS
A lot of students have to complete a mandatory internship. The duration of the internship depends on the study
program.
Within the scope of the traineeship students can gain professional experience. A lot of organizations offer internships in different fields.
8.1. TIPS FOR YOUR INTERNSHIP
Before starting the internship, try to arrange the following issues: duties during the
internship, beginning and end of the internship, hours of work and payment. Ask for
a written agreement including all these issues.
During your internship: Try to learn as much as you can and write down your working
hours.
In this application guide we would like to outline the advantages and the benefits of internships.
8.2. ADVANTAGES OF INTERNSHIPS
An internship helps you to find a job and will give you all additional key
qualifications to start your career successfully.
You can extend your expertise with practical experience.
An internship is excellent for developing your personality.
The reality shock, i.e. the switch to working life will be reduced through an
internship.
During your internship you can find out in which area you would like to work.
You can get in contact with organizations and recruiters.
If you convince the employer during your internship, organizations may offer you
a full time job.

9. REMUNERATION AND INFORMATION ON
LABOUR-LAW PROVISIONS
9.1. REMUNERATION
Maybe you are asked about your desired salary during the job interview or you have to negotiate it when you get an explicit job offer. You should be aware of the following:
Define a salary range for yourself in advance. Be realistic and look at customary salaries. If
you already have a lot of professional experience, your margin for negotiations is bigger. In
addition you have to add so-called fringe benefits to your salary (e.g. insurance, meal vouchers).
Salaries are always discussed in gross.
Since March 2011 organizations have been obliged to quote the provided salary in their job
advertisements. These salary details are just orientation guides. The salary depends on your
professional experience, your education and maybe your negotiation skills.
9.2. EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT
The conclusion of the employment contract is not restricted to a specific form. The employment contract can
be concluded orally or written. However, it is better to
have a written employment contract with all working
details (e.g. working hours, salary, etc.). It is essential to
read the contract before you sign it.
9.2.1. Probation period
Most companies ask for a probation period. The probation period cannot last longer than
one month. During the probation period, both parties can terminate the employment contract without stating reasons.

9.2.2. Fixed-term employment contract
If you complete a fixed-term employment contract, the contract ends on a particular date.
During the fixed-term, the employment contract cannot be terminated. Exceptions: the
consensual termination as well as the dismissal of an employee by the employer or the early
withdrawal by the employee for important reasons!
9.2.3. All-In contract
An all-in contract is an agreement where payment for extra work or overtime is covered by
a lump sum included in the salary.

10. THE FIRST DAYS IN YOUR NEW JOB
For graduates starting a job is a big challenge and constitutes major changes. Especially the
first days in the new job are often linked with a lot of questions and new impressions. What
will I be in for? What will my tasks be?
We would like to give you some important tips for the first days in your new job, so that
you have a good start:
Inform yourself about the company in advance and try to get as much information as
possible.
Be on time on the first working day and avoid delays.
Be careful that you don’t over- or under-dress for your new job. Follow the dress code
of the organization.
Smile when you meet new people and introduce yourself to everyone.
Show your interest and if you want to know something ask your colleagues.
For the first few days, observe the constellation of your coworkers and don’t join a
group of colleagues too fast.
Learn the company’s policies and procedures and try to find out the corporate culture.
Note that during the first weeks in your new job there are a lot of new things for you
to see and to learn. The organization doesn’t expect you to know everything on your
first days at work.
