„Datumierung“ que se enmarca dentro del proyecto artístico „Artsurprise“
1. Fotos de la familia
Mi madre nació en 1921 en Dogern cerca de Waldshut que se encuentra directamente al Rin y a la frontera suiza. Su comentario sobre la operación del ejército de la República Federal de Alemania en Afganistán siempre es este: –No sé que la
Wehrmacht busca en Afganistán–. Ella había sido en el Servicio Social y desde 1944 en la Wehrmacht, lo que la había llevado
hacia Varsovia entre otros lugares. Su padre nació en 1891, un antiguo granadero del regimento de Baden en Karlsruhe (el
regimento para la protección del gran duque de Baden) y uno de los trece niños de una familia agricultora del sur de la
Selva Negra.
¿Qué tiene que ver todo eso con aquel cajón de arte, con aquella colección de cromos que se llama
„Datumierung“?
Hacía unos años que empezé de grabar en dictáfono las experiencias de mi madre con el Tercer Reich. Las muchas fotos
de la familia que todavía existen resultaban muy útiles. Inesperadamente me trajeron historias a la mente; recuerdos de
primera mano, informes de contemporáneos de la propia familia.
Pero si miraba las fotos otra vez, más tarde, ya noté unas lagunas en la memoria. Algunas fotos ya no me recordaban nada
más. La fotografía había perdido su historia, su contenido, su vida. Lo que quedé era solo la pátina parduzco de las „bonitas”, viejas fotos en blanco y negro. Insuficiente para mí y el hilo de la familia, sin sentido e inútil – muerto.
Entonces, mi madre y yo empezamos a etiquetar las fotografías disponibles; por ejemplo ¿cuándo se sacó la foto?, ¿quién
está en ella? y ¿dónde se sacó? Algunas fotografías se remontan al comienzo de la fotografía, cuando todavía eran exclusivas y caras – por ejemplo a mis tatarabuelos por línea paterna.
2. Digitalización
Necesito lo háptico. Tengo que y quiero tocar, sentir y entender algo, y también percibirlo visualmente. Así hago las cosas;
de manera análoga, anticuada. Quiero sostener las fotografías de manera arcaíca en mis manos y saber que no están en un
desván, etiquetadas con un número críptico.
En 2008 adquirí mi primera cámara compacta digital e intenté imprimir en forma agradable las fotos que habían salidas
bienes. Después de haber buscado un buen rato, encontré la forma ópima para mí: foto con autógrafo – impresos en formato
de postales. Por modelo me sirvió la presentación clásica de fotos con autógrafo de artistas de la empresa „Ross“, desde los
años 20 hasta 40 en Alemania/Berlín. El grupo de rock/pop alemán Kraftklub cantaría hoy: „Las cromos de „Datumierung“
son retros y no „vintage““.
3. Fotos con autógrafa „Editorial Ross“
A través del archivamiento de la propia historia familiar – la madre y la Wehrmacht en 1944, el padre como soldado de la
Wehrmacht en el Cáucaso – surgió un interés automático por aquel tiempo. ¿Cómo se comportaban? ¿Son personas culpables? Si lo son, ¿de qué tamaño es su culpa? ¿Cómo me hubiera comportado yó en aquel tiempo? ¿Cómo hubiera vivido?
Y algún día me he encontrado las fotos con autógrafa del „Editorial Ross“ – ya no sé cómo ocurrió. Las cromos de Ross son
expuestos, revelados y fijados en papel fotográfico original. El anverso muestra el o la artista con su nombre. Uno podía
reservar aquellas cromos y enviarlas a los artistas, para pedirles a un autógrafo.
Otra parte de aquel „comercialización“ del „Editorial Ross“ consiste en la distribución de cromos y los álbumes correspondientes mediante empresas de tabaco. En los paquetes de cigarillos añadían pequeños „fotos originales“ de artistas
conocidos, que uno podía pegar al álbum y colleccionar.

En aquel contexto se puede ver y comprar por primera vez los cromos de daemax. Saco fotos de mí, mis alrededores, mi
familia y de ellas creo fotos de autógrafa hace 2008. Hasta ahora, este trabajo nunca había sido exhibido en público. Con
Artsurprise se cierra un círculo: cromos de la „arte-máquina de tabaco“.

„Datumierung - dating“ - as part of the art project “Artsurprise”
1. Family pictures
My mother was born in 1921 in Dogern near Waldshut by the river Rhein at the Swiss border. Her comment on the deployment
of the German armed forces in Afghanistan always is: “I don’t know what the Wehrmacht’s business is in Afghanistan.” She
herself had to do labour service and was in the Wehrmacht from 1944 on, which led her amongst others as far as Warsaw.
Her father was born in 1891, a former grenadier in the Baden regiment in Karlsruhe – the regiment protecting the Grand Duke
of Baden – and one of 13 surviving children of a big farming family in the Southern Black Forest.
What does all this have to do with this art box, with these trading pictures “dating”?
Many years ago I started to record my mother’s experiences in the Third Reich with a dictaphone. The big number of still
existing family pictures were very helpful for that, as they brought unexpected stories back to mind; firsthand memories,
authentic accounts of contemporary witnesses from her own family.
When, however, contemplating the pictures some time later, I noticed memory lapses, with some pictures I already couldn’t
remember anything at all. Photography had lost its history, its content, its life. The only thing that was left was the brownish patina of the “beautiful” old black and white pictures. For me and our family thread too little, meaningless and futile
– dead.
So my mother and I started to label all photographs available; when was the photograph taken, who is on it and where could
the picture have been taken? Some photographs date back to the beginnings of photography when they used to be really
exclusive and expensive, for instance back to my paternal great-great-grandparents.
2. Digitalization
I need my haptic sense. I need and want to be able to touch, feel and comprehend something, also to sense it visually. That’s
how I work; in an analogue, old-fashioned manner. I want to hold the photographs quite archaically in my hands, knowing
that they are not stored somewhere in an attic cryptically parameterised.
In 2008 I bought my first digital compact camera and tried to print the accomplished photographs in an appealing way.
After searching for a while I found the form ideal to me: “autograph cards” – printouts in the size of postcards. I used the
classic presentation of autograph cards of actors and actresses from the twenties till fourties of the company Ross in
Berlin/Germany as an inspiration. The German rock and pop band Kraftklub would sing today: “The dating cards are retro
and not vintage”.
3. Autograph cards – „Publisher Ross“
Archiving my own family history – my mother in Warsaw with the Wehrmacht, my father as a soldier in the Wehrmacht in the
Caucasus – generated an automatic interest in this time. How did they behave, are they “guilty” -, if so, how much “guilt”?
How would I have behaved back then, how would I have lived?
And at some point I happened to come across the autograph cards of publisher Ross, I can’t remember how. Ross-cards have
been exposed, developed and fixed on real photobase paper. The front shows the actor or actress with his/her name. One
could order these cards and send them to the actors and actresses, asking for an autograph.
Another part of this merchandising of the publisher Ross consisted in the distribution of trading cards and the corresponding albums through cigarette companies. Small real-photographs of known actors and actresses were enclosed in
cigarette boxes. These ones could be stuck into the album and collected.

In this context the demaex-trading cards can exclusively be seen and bought for the first time. I take pictures of myself,
my surroundings, my family and have been making autograph cards from them since 2008. So far this work hasn’t been
published. Artsurprise brings us now full cirlce: trading cards from the art-cigarette machine.

„Datumierung“ im Rahmen des Kunstprojekts „Artsurprise“
1. Familienfotos
Meine Mutter wurde 1921 geboren, in Dogern bei Waldshut direkt an Rhein und Schweizer Grenze. Ihr Kommentar zum Einsatz
der Bundeswehr in Afghanistan lautet immer: “Ich weiß auch nicht, was die Wehrmacht in Afghanistan verloren hat.“ Sie
selbst war im Arbeitsdienst gewesen und ab 1944 bei der Wehrmacht, was sie unter anderem bis nach Warschau führte. Ihr
Vater war Jahrgang 1891 gewesen, einstmals Grenadier im Badischen Regiment in Karlsruhe (das Regiment zum Schutze des
Großherzogs von Baden) und eines von 13 überlebenden Kindern einer Großbauernfamilie im Südschwarzwald.
Was hat dies alles mit dieser Kunst-Schachtel, mit diesen Sammelbildern „Datumierung“ zu tun?
Vor Jahren begann ich, die Erlebnisse meiner Mutter im „Dritten Reich“ mit einem Diktafon aufzuzeichnen. Als ausgesprochen hilfreich erwiesen sich dabei die vielen noch vorhandenen Familienfotos. Anhand dieser kamen unverhofft Geschichten
wieder in Erinnerung; Erinnerungen aus erster Hand, authentische Zeitzeugenberichte aus der eigenen Familie. Betrachtete
ich die Fotos jedoch einige Zeit später erneut, stellte ich schon Gedächtnislücken fest, bei einigen Fotos erinnerte ich mich
an gar nichts mehr. Die Fotografie hatte ihre Geschichte verloren, ihren Inhalt, ihr Leben. Übrig blieb nur die bräunliche
Patina der „schönen“, alten schwarz-weißen Bilder. Für mich und den Familienfaden zu wenig, sinn- und nutzlos - tot.
Meine Mutter und ich begannen nun, alle uns verfügbaren Fotografien zu beschriften; wann etwa wurde das Foto aufgenommen, wer befindet sich auf diesem und wo könnte die Aufnahme entstanden sein? Manche Aufnahmen reichen zurück bis zu
den Anfängen der Fotografie, als diese noch richtig exklusiv und teuer war - zum Beispiel zurück zu meinen Ur-Urgroßeltern
väterlicherseits.
2. Digitalisierung
Ich brauche das „Haptische“. Ich muss, ich will etwas anfassen, fühlen, begreifen, auch visuell abtasten können. Auf dieser
Ebene funktioniere ich; analog, altmodisch. Ich will die Aufnahmen ganz archaisch in meinen Händen halten und diese nicht
irgendwo auf/in einem Speicher mit einer kryptischen Nummer versehen wissen.
2008 kaufte ich meine erste digitale Kompaktkamera und versuchte, die gelungen Fotos in einer ansprechenden Form
auszudrucken. Nach längerem Suchen fand ich die für mich optimale Form: „Autogramm-Karten“ - Ausdrucke in Postkartenformat. Als Vorlage für die Präsentation diente mir die klassische Darstellung von Schauspieler-Autogrammkarten der Firma
„Ross“ aus den 20er bis 40er Jahren in Deutschland/Berlin. Die deutsche Rock/Popband Kraftklub würden heute singen: „Die
Datumierungskarten sind retro und nicht vintage“.
3. Autogrammkarten „Verlag Ross“
Durch die Archivierung der eigenen Familiengeschichte - die Mutter 1944 mit der Wehrmacht in Warschau, der Vater als
Wehrmachtsoldat im Kaukasus - entstand ein unwillkürliches Interesse an dieser Zeit. Wie haben sie sich verhalten, sind sie
„Schuldige“ - wenn ja, „wie viel“ Schuld? Wie hätte ich mich damals verhalten, wie hätte ich gelebt?
Und irgendwann bin ich über die Autogrammkarten des „Verlag Ross“ gestolpert - ich weiß nicht mehr, wie. „Ross-Karten“
sind auf echtem Fotopapier belichtet, entwickelt und fixiert. Die Frontseite zeigt den Schauspieler oder die Schauspielerin
mit ihrem Namen. Diese Karten konnte man bestellen und gegebenenfalls an die Schauspieler schicken und um Autogramme bitten.
Ein weiterer Teil dieses „Merchandisings“ des „Verlags Ross“ bestand im Vertrieb von Sammelbildern und den zugehörigen
Alben durch Zigarettenfirmen. In Zigarettenschachteln wurden kleine „Echtfotos“ der bekannten Schauspieler beigelegt.
Diese konnten in das Album geklebt und gesammelt werden.

In diesem Zusammenhang sind die demaex-Sammelbilder erstmals exklusiv zu sehen und zu kaufen. Ich fotografiere mich,
meine Umgebung, meine Familie und stelle daraus seit 2008 Autogrammkarten her. Diese Arbeit wurde bisher in der Öffentlichkeit nicht ausgestellt. Mit Artsurprise schließt sich nun ein Kreis: Sammelbilder aus dem Kunst-Zigarettenautomaten
vom Sohn eines ehemaligen Zigartettengroßhändlers.
