Nutritional Supplements in Sport, Exercise and Health: An AZ Guide
Jahrgang 5/2016 Fotos: Routledge G ood supplements are the most common issues in sports, when it comes to question what can an athlete do to increase its performance. Between facts and myths, there is a wide span of expectations. Therefore, it was highly appreciated that Linda Castell from the University of Oxford, head of the “Cellular Nutrition Research Group”, former co-worker of late Prof. Erik Newsholme, as highly respected immunologist has prepared a series of publications in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. These are now published in a 427 pages paperback format, consisting of an introduction into the field of these studies and substances, their effects as well as anti-doping issues. This is followed by a long list of contributions to many supplements from A to Z. These are one-two pages written excerpts of the literature of well-known and respected scientists. The book includes an “in practice” section and a conclusion followed by references and an extensive index. When you summarize the data, only a few substances are really proved to be effective for performance. These are carbohydrates, electrolytes, protein, whey-protein, caffeine and creatinine.
