He left Gigha and went to Edinburgh. “It wasn’t easy to 5 leave everything behind and start a new life in a new place,” he says. “I have been all over 6 Europe for many years and tried out lots of jobs.” 7 In 1990 John started his own business in the computer industry in London. He worked 8 14 hours a day and had no private life. After several years he realized that he missed 9 friends and free time but also nature and Gigha. So he went back to the island in 1999. 10 Today he and his wife, Margaret, have a shop and a small hotel on Gigha. Only 120 11 people live there, but in summer 150 tourists arrive by boat every day. “Life on Gigha is so 12 wonderful because people know each other,” John says. 13 John is still a very busy man. Now he is 60 years old and has eight jobs. 14 Every weekday he gets up at 6.00 a.m. and prepares a delicious breakfast for the hotel 15 guests. 16 At 8.00 a.m. he drives the island’s children to school. 17 At 9.00 he collects the mail from the boat and delivers it to all the houses on the island. 18 He also delivers milk and sells petrol. In the afternoon he helps Margaret in the shop. 19 People call him when there is an accident or a robbery. 20 Sometimes he goes fishing and sells the fish on the market. 21 He says,” Margaret and I like being busy. We never have holidays and we don’t like 22 watching television. In the evenings we have a cup of tea and then we go to bed.
