Purpose of the course unit: programme competences to be developed
Purposes of the unit:
1) to provide knowledge of social work language with the focus on the field
terminology; 2) to develop skills necessary for a successful career in the sphere of
social work;
3) to develop generic abilities necessary for a professional of social work
(information management, research, communicative and social skills, etc.).

At the end of the
term
Written examination is an integrated written
assignment to assess knowledge of social work
terms in use and reading comprehension skills. Test
results are assessed in a ten-point scale: 100-95
percent of correct answers – 10 points; 94-85 per
cent – 9; 84-75 percent – 8; 74-65 per cent – 7;
64-55 per cent – 6; 54-45 per cent – 5; 44-35 per
cent – 4; 34-25 per cent – 3; 24-15 per cent – 2;
14-5 per cent – 1; 4-0 per cent – 0. During oral
examination a student discusses themes covered and
researched in the course – answers questions,
expresses his/her opinion regarding problem-based
issues of the field, etc. The criteria for assessment:
1) ability to participate in a discussion of researched
topics; 2) ability to use terms properly; 3) ability to
use lexical and grammar structures appropriately; 4)
ability to speak fluently and correctly.

Portfolio shows a student's learning outcomes and
contribution to his/her individual studying of the
course subject-matter. A student is able to present
the collected material in a detailed way.

Power Point presentation of a researched topic (10
minutes). Requirements for making a presentation:
appropriate structure, only key words in slides,
tables/graphs/etc., photos/videos, etc., a list of
sources used for the research.
