Günter Geyer was granted important award by Slovak President
Günter Geyer, Chairman of the Managing Board of Wiener Städtischer Versicherungsverein –
the main shareholder of Vienna Insurance Group – was granted the “Medal of the President of the
Slovak Republic” by Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič. By bestowing this honour on Mr. Geyer,
President Ivan Gašparovič acknowledged his personal contribution to the economic development of
Slovakia, in particular to the outstanding performance of the insurance industry. The award ceremony
took place at the President’s Palace in Bratislava on 20 May 2013.
In 2004 Mr. Geyer was given the “Golden Medal of the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and
Industry” for his engagement in Slovakia. Furthermore, he was awarded the “Mayor’s Award of the
City of Bratislava” in 2007 and an honorary doctorate of the University of Economics in
Bratislava in 2012.
In his capacity as the Managing Director of Wiener Städtischer Versicherungsverein,
Mr. Günter Geyer is responsible for the social and cultural activities as well as for fundamental
strategic issues of Vienna Insurance Group, which he has headed for more than ten years.
Market leader in Slovakia
Slovakia was the starting point for the expansion of Vienna Insurance Group in Central and Eastern
Europe to its current position as the leading insurance group. Founded in Bratislava in 1990,
Kooperativa was not only the first private insurance company in the former reform countries but also
the first investment of Vienna Insurance Group in the CEE region.
Mr. Günter Geyer has played a decisive role in ensuring that soon after its foundation Kooperativa
developed into an innovative and modern insurance company. Today Kooperativa is one of the
leading enterprises of the country. Together with the two other Group companies Komunálna as well
as Poist’ovňa Slovenskej sporitel’ne, Vienna Insurance Group was the unrivalled leader in its core
market Slovakia in 2012, holding a market share of 33.6 percent.
Wiener Städtische Versicherungsverein is the main shareholder of the Vienna Insurance Group (VIG) and
provides support for the Group’s cultural and social activities, with a focus is on enhancing cross-border,
intercultural exchange. The emphasis is also on creating an environment in which individual cultures can thrive.
Partnerships and initiatives are geared towards supporting the activities of social organisations, especially in the
Central and Eastern European countries in which the Vienna Insurance Group has a presence. As the main
shareholder, Wiener Städtische Versicherungsverein is also concerned with key strategic matters within the
Group.
