LA JOIE DE LIRE
Chaque année, le Vancouver International Writers Festival présente
La Joie de Lire, une programmation de jour en français destinée
aux élèves des programmes de français langue maternelle et
d’immersion en français. Les auteurs de cette année—tous
originaires du Québec—sont Elaine Arsenault, François Barcello,
Sylvain Hotte et Dany Laferrière.
Ne manquez pas de faire connaître à vos élèves ces formidables
auteurs et leurs nouveaux livres. Vous pouvez commander les livres
d’auteurs du Festival au Vancouver Kidsbooks sur www.kidsbooks.ca.
Comme toujours, nous avons élaboré un programme mettant en
vedette des auteurs possédant une vaste expérience dans la
présentation de leur œuvre au public scolaire. Et pour les
enseignants : les guides d’études (voir ci-dessous).
Ces activités auront lieu du mardi 20 octobre au jeudi 22 octobre.
STUDY GUIDES!
Spreading the Word events connect to BC curriculum. There will be
a study guide for each event available on the Festival website
(www.writersfest.bc.ca) in September.
Guides d’études! Les activités « Spreading the Word » ont des
liens directs avec les programmes d’études de la C.-B. Pour
permettre aux enseignants de tirer plein parti du Festival, un guide
d’études a été élaboré pour chacune des activités. Ces guides
seront disponibles sur le site Web du Festival en septembre.
ROOKIE WRITER CONTEST
A writing contest for secondary school students (Grade 8–12) held
in September. The winner of each grade level will spend one day at
CBC radio studios to produce their story, which will air on North By
Northwest. The top prizewinner also gets a set of tickets for their
class to attend a Festival event. For more information contact

Each year the Reading with Writers program sends authors to visit
inner city school classrooms (K–12). It’s a great opportunity for
students to meet an author and ask questions. If you are interested

Elaine Arsenault a grandi à L’Île Bizard, petite
île située au nord de Montréal, parlant anglais à
la maison et français à l’extérieur. Sa série porte
sur Passepoil, un drôle de petit chien débordant
d’entrain et de bonne humeur. Sa vie est une
suite d’aventures palpitantes (ÉLÈVES DE
L’ÉLÉMENTAIRE). La série L’or des gitans est une
passionnante saga romanesque où
s’entrecroisent les destins d’une belle gitane, d’une fillette
abandonnée, d’un cheval au grand coeur, d’un affreux sorcier et

Les sujets des livres de Sylvain Hotte varient de la
Mongolie du XIIIe siècle au tout début de l’histoire de la
Chine et de la Perse dans la série primée Darhan et
Panache, premier tome de la série Aréna, qui raconte les
aventures d'un jeune joueur de hockey midget, vedette
régionale promise à un grand avenir, mais….D’ici le mois
d’octobre, la série Darhan comptera 9 volumes et
Attaquant de puissance viendra s’ajouter à la série Aréna.

Mariatu Kamara was born and raised in Sierra Leone.
Her harrowing experiences as a child victim of war and
its aftermath are the subject of her memoir, The Bite
of the Mango. Today, Mariatu is a university student in
Toronto and was named a UNICEF Special Representative
for Children and Armed Conflict, and speaks to high
school students across North America about her
experiences. (SECONDARY)
Rukhsana Khan is an award-winning writer and storyteller.
Born in Lahore, Pakistan she is an active speaker and
expert on books with international and Muslim themes
for kids of all ages. Her new YA novel, Wanting Mor,
deals with the life of a girl in post-Taliban, Americanoccupied Afghanistan. (ELEMENTARY: INTERMEDIATE;
Don Calame’s debut novel Swim the Fly is
making a big splash with both avid and reluctant
readers. It’s the perfect summer read about the
sometimes raunchy but always hysterical
adventures of three teenage boys. A romping
rapid-fire laugh out loud read also filled with
coming of age wisdom for girls and boys.

Gordon Korman is an award-winning novelist and author
of more than 60 books for children and young adults.The
39 Clues (books, cards and web game) is a huge hit and
Zoobreak, a sequel to Swindle and Pop, will be released
this fall. He is on the shortlist for the 2009 Red Cedar

Robyn Harding's previous
humorous novels, (The Journal
of Mortifying Moments, Mom Will this Chicken
Give Me Man Boobs?) have left readers
laughing in no less than eight countries around
the world. My Parents are Sex Maniacs: A High
School Horror Story is garnering great reviews
for her portrayal of the complex social hierarchies
that characterize the high school experience, teen angst and the
hilarious horror of the main character’s discovery that her parents are

THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE
Né à Haïti, vivant maintenant à Montréal et
à Miami et bien connu pour ses livres pour
adultes, Dany Laferrière a écrit deux livres destinés
aux jeunes. Je suis fou de Vava et La Fête des morts
sont basés sur l’enfance de Laferrière à Haïti (ÉLÈVES
DE L’ÉLÉMENTAIRE).

Poetry”, we will once again offer two spoken word
events for secondary schools this year featuring
three spoken word artists including CR Avery, Billeh
Nickerson and Hilary Peach. Look for the full
program details on our website in late August – it’s
going to be one of the best years ever!
After being discovered in the “slush pile”,
Matthew Skelton’s Endymion Spring is now
heralded by booksellers as The Da Vinci Code for
kids. Skelton grew up on both sides of the Atlantic,
but found himself strangely drawn toward Oxford.
An expert on books and printing, he spent years
searching the libraries of Europe, where a dusty
volume first set him on the train of Endymion
Spring. In 2002 he won Richard and Judy's short story competition.
Cirrus Flux is his second novel. (ELEMENTARY: INTERMEDIATE)
Rochelle Strauss’s books Tree of Life: the
Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth and One
Well: the Story of Water on Earth have garnered
several awards and been published across the
globe. Through her work, Rochelle combines her
love of nature and passion for stories to teach
children about the wonders of the natural world.

CJ Taylor is an internationally acclaimed artist
and children’s author of Mohawk heritage. She’s
traveled extensively throughout North America
helping make the rich cultural history of native

Tim Wynne-Jones has written
thirty books and won the
Governor General’s Award for
children’s literature twice. His latest novel, Rex
Zero, The Great Pretender is the third in the Rex
Zero series. The Uninvited, new this spring, is a
brother and sister whodunnit thriller.

Paul Yee, a third-generation Chinese-Canadian,
explores the world through the lens of Chinese
experience in his critically acclaimed picture
books, short stories, novels and non-fiction.
Paul’s many books for readers of all ages
include Bamboo, a folk tale set in a south
Chinese village, Canadian Chinatowns, and
