Works by Spinoza in original editions
1. Renati des Cartes Principiorum Philosophiae. Pars I & II, More Geometrico demonstratae...
Accesserunt Eiusdem Cogitata Metaphysica, in quibus difficiliores, quae tam in parte Metaphysices
generali, quam speciali occurrunt, quaestiones breviter explicantur.
Amsterdam, J. Riewerts, 1663. 4to
[16], 140 pp. woodcut device on title-p. and 20 woodcuts of mathematical and physical figures in
the text. With some old annotations in ink in margins and text.
[Bound after:] DESCARTES, RENÉ. De Homine Figuris et Latinate Donatus a Florentio Schuyl.
Leyden, F. Moyard & P. Leffen, 1662.
Fine copies, contemp. bound together in panelled calf, just a trifle worn. [36], 121, [1] pp.
Complete with all engraved illustrations and with all 3 overslips. 2 plates slightly shaved at foot
with trivial loss of image.
8,500.-*
First edition of first publication of Spinoza, and the only one with his full name on the
titlepage. His friend Lodewijk Meyer edited the manuscript and wrote the preface in which
he made clear Spinoza did not identify himself too closely with its contents. The Cogitata
Methaphysica (2nd part) is also written from a Cartesian point of view, but many of Spinoza's
most important concepts already take shape in it. See for a detailed survey on the history of
this book: Kingma-Offenberg. Van der Linde 1; Kingma/Offenberg 1; Wolf 356
This copy of De Homine is the second issue of first edition. Guibert, p. 197.
2. Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. Continens dissertationes aliquot, quibus ostenditur libertatem
philosophandi non tantum salva pietate, & reipublica pace posse concedi: sed eandem nisi cum
pace reipublicae, ipsaque pietate tolli non posse.
Hamburgi [=Amsterdam], apud Henricum Künrath [= Jan Rieuwertsz], 1670. Small 4to. Top of
spine chipped, expertly reinforced.
Contemp. spickled calf, raised bands and red mor. lettering-piece. Gold-tooled spine and edges.
Slight wear to corners and frontjoint. (12), 233, (1) pp. 19th cent. annotations and underlinings in
pencil; a few neat (contemporary?) annotations in ink in margins; Two tiny marginal wormholes in
inner margin. Very good copy.
5,000.-*
"The purpose of the State is freedom". This is a central theme of the Tractatus TheologicoPoliticus. Spinoza's second publication is a passionate appeal for freedom of thought and
self-expression. The conditions for a secular, democratic state are formulated in a superior
way. With the publication, Spinoza clearly takes position in the ongoing power-struggle in
the republic, risking his scientific career and his life. The book appeared anonymously, under
fictitious imprint, but to many it was no secret that the author was `the atheist Jew from
Voorburg'. From the beginning the book was under constant attack of the clergy. Spinoza's
allies in high places could not prevent the book from being banned, but for a long time they
managed to avoid effective official measures against it.
Fifth issue of the first edition, printed probably after 1677. Kingma/ Offenberg, in their
introduction to the complicated printing history of the book, argue that in spite of all the
research the problem of the sequence of the 1670-dated issues is not yet definitively solved.
Kingma-Offenberg 7. Bamberger 684
3. Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. Cui adjunctus est Philosophia S. Scripturae Interpres. Ab Authore
longé Emendatior. [Amsterdam], [Jan Rieuwertsz.], 1674. 8vo.
Modern calf, gilt decorated spine.[XXII], 334, [XVI]; 182, [20] pp., without the title to the second
part (as usual). First and last blanc of first part missing, some slight browning, title-page slightly
chipped at top. Bookplate Biblioteca Alfonso Cassuto on first paste-down, his library-mark in
blindstamp on title. Very good copy.
4,500.-*
Third edition, (the octavo one) of the TTP combined with the reprint of the treatise
Philosophia S. Scripturae interpres by Spinoza's friend, Dr. Lodewijk Meijer (1666). This
copy referred to by Bamberger as the issue with the `English' titlepage T.3E. This new
titlepage replaced the fictitious titlepages of the first issues. In this issue the second part has
no separate title, as the new titlepage lists both works (See Bamberger, the early editions of
Spinoza's Tractatus Theologico-Politicus T.3E). Van der Linde 7. Kingma-Offenberg 12.
See for the English translation of Meyer's work item 404,
4. [Tractatus Theologico-Politicus in French].Traitté des ceremonies superstitieuses des Juifs tant
anciens que modernes. Amsterdam, Chez Jacob Smith, 1678 [Second title]: Reflexions curieuses
d'un Esprit des-Interressé sur les matieres les plus importantes au salut, tant public que particulier.
Cologne, Chez Claude Emanuel, 1678. 12mo.
18th century red morocco leather binding, gilt title on spine, gilt inner borders, gilt edges, marbled
endpapers with gilt-decorated borders, minor discolouration at froint-joint, corners slightly worn.
(32), 531, (31), 30 pp. Fine, attractive copy.
1,700.-*
First French translation of the TTP by N. de Saint-Glain. Appeared in two almost identical
editions (X and Y, see Kingma-Offenberg) in various issues under three different fictitious
titles and disguised addresses (as a precaution, for the Latin edition was banned). Present
copy with 2 titlepages. At the end the first edition of the annotations Spinoza had written in
his own copy of the TTP, translated in French: Remarques curieuses et necessaires pour
l"intelligence de ce livre. Present edition: Kingma-Offenberg15 (edition X3). See also
Bambergers remarks (686).
5. De Rechtzinnige Theologant, of Godgeleerde Staatkundige Verhandelinge. Uit het Latijn vertaalt
[door Jan Hendrik Glazemaker].
Te Hamburg, By Henricus Koenraad [= probably Jan Riewertsz], 1693. 4to.
Later, marbled calf, gilt spine with red moroccan title-pieces, decorated endleaves; minor wear at
edges. XXVIII, 360 pp.; with owner's name in ink on title-page: 'G.W. Alberti, Amstelod. 1747'
and author's name added in the same hand: 'Bened. de Spinoza'. Slight traces of browning at upper
edge. Very good copy.
6,500.-*
First edition in Dutch of the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, published without the name of
the author and translator and with fictitious address. Shortly after the original Latin edition
(1670), a Dutch translation was initiated by an unknown fundraiser. When Spinoza heard
about this, he urged his friend Jarig Jelles by letter (Febr. 1671) to prevent publication in the
vernacular - for obvious reasons. Spinoza knew too well that his opponents would react even
more vehemently at the possible dispersion of his ideas among the `common' people.
Several manuscript copies were made, but it took 20 years before the Glazemaker-translation
finally appeared in print. Kingma-Offenberg 22
Early Spinozana (until 1800)
6. ANONYMOUS. Traité des Trois Imposteurs.
En Suisse, Imprimerie Philosophique, 1793. 12mo.
Contemp. halfleather, marbled boards, marbled endpapers; minor wear to ends of spine and
corners. [2], 168, III pp.; incidental waterstain at margin along long edge, a few minor traces of use,
otherwise a good copy. Contemp. annotation in ink on titlepage: `par Spinosa'.
220.-*
Contains also: Sentimens sur le Traité des trois imposteurs, by B. de La Monnoye; Réponse à
la dissertation de Mr. de La Monnoye sur le Traité des trois imposteurs signed : J.L.R.L. [i.e. P.
F. Arpe]; and: Copie de l'article IX du tome 1er, seconde partie des Mémoires de litterature,
imprimés á la Haye ... en 1716.
This work is not, as one would expect, the French translation of the Latin treatise De tribus
impostoribus, but a revision of the second part of La vie et l'esprit de Benoit Spinosa, 1719,
usually attributed to Lucas. Bamberger 615 (see also Bamberger 539). Wolf, nr. 313. Van der
Linde 102.
7. BASNAGE, JACQUES CHRISTIAN. Histoire des Juifs depuis Jesus-Christ jusqu'à present. Pour
servir de continuation à l'histoire de Joseph. Nouvelle édition augmentée. 15 vols.
La Haye, Scheurleer, 1716. 12mo.
Contemporary leather, slightly worn at places. Raised bands. Some spines partly cracked. Top
spines worn. Inside some browning. Ex libris. Library stamp on each halftitle. Good complete set.
1,000.-*
Second enlarged edition (final). Brunet I, p. 691. Basnage, 1653-1725, Protestant divine and
historian. `His books are important as the first comprehensive and truly erudite history of the
Jews in the Christan era, filling a gap between early Jewish historical writings and modern
jewish historical research.' (Encyclopedia Judaica). Basnage's account of Spinoza, based
mainly on Colerus, is on a higher level than most contemporary accounts. Interestingly,
according to Basnage, Spinoza is much influenced by the cabbalists. (Vol. 7, p. 128ff).
Bamberger 161
8. BAYLE, PIERRE. Dictionaire historique et critique. Quatrieme edition, revue, corrigée, et
augmentée. Avec la vie de l'auteur par Mr. Des Maizeaux. 4 vols.
Amsterdam, Brunel - Leiden, Samuel Luchtmans, 1730. Folio.
Uniform contemp. full leather bindings. 7 raised bands, gilt decorated spine. Marbled edges.
Leather slightly worn with occasional damage, especially to corners. Spines slightly damaged at top
and bottom, spine of vol. 1 split at the bottom compartment. 4 fine engraved title-vignettes. Large
vignette at "L'Epitre dédicatoire" by Bernard Picart. Some slight foxing. Occasional slight
dampstaining in margin. Textblock age-darkened at some pages. A good set in authentic state.
1,250.-9. COLERUS, JEAN.

Contemp. marbled paper wraps.; split and loosening at spine, and chipped with minor loss. 126
pp. and engraved portrait of Colerus as frontispiece; title-page printed in red and black. Some old
annotations in ink; p.3 (Vorrede des Ubersetzers) with small burning-hole and loss of some text.

Nieuwentijt 1727. Van der Linde 92; Wolf 294. Bamberger 323
10. COLERUS, JEAN. La Vie de B. de Spinosa, Tirée des Écrits de ce Fameux Philosophe, Et du

La Haye, Chez T. Johnson, 1706. 8vo.
Contemp. leather, gilt spine and board edges, spickled edges; binding worn, ends of spine
damaged with loss of first compartment at top. 188, [4 blank] pp., titlepage printed in red and
black; second flyleaf partly detached, contemp. bookplate on first paste-down, old owner's name
(d'Oliveira) in ink on first text-pageblack, a few tiny stains. Good copy.
680.-*
Most comprehensive early biography, first published in Dutch in 1705. Jean Colerus was
minister at the Lutheran church at The Hague. See for more information: Freudenthal, Die
Lebensgeschichte Spinozas, repr. ed by M. Walther. First French translation. The sermon that
originally preceded this text was, as in many copies, left out. Van der Linde 89. See
Bamberger 157.
11. CONSTANS, LUCIUS ANTISTIUS. De Jure Ecclesiasticorum, Liber Singularis. Quo docetur:
Alethopoli, Apud Cajum Valerium Pennatum, 1665. 8vo.
Contemporary (publisher's?) wrappers, worn, spine partly gone showing vellum manuscript used to
reinforce the spine. [16], 162, [6] pp., broad margins, uncut. Small piece lacking from lower corner
of titlepage without loss of text. Neat inscriptions of former owner on title, indicating 'Ben. de
Spinoza' as the author. A nice copy, completely in the original state.
2,500.--
*
Reference of former owner on title: 'Scriptum rarissismum. Vid. Vogtii Catal. libr. rat. p.214.'
The identity of the author is not fully determined. Constans most probably is a pseudonym.
For a long time the work was wrongly attributed to Spinoza. Lodewijk Meyer, Lambert van
Velthuysen and Pieter de la Court are also named as the authors. Jonathan Israel, who
assumes Lodewijk Meyer is the writer, describes this book as a `hard-hitting, radical tract (...)
claiming all spiritual and worldly authority, as well as property claimed by ecclesiastics, is
appropriated "unjustly and in an impious manner"' (Radical Enlightenment, p. 201)
First issue of first edition. Van der Linde 54. Bamberger 1. Wolf 428.
12. DESCARTES, RENATUS. Brieven, Aan veel hooggeachte lieden van verscheidene Staten

Schrijver dienen. Door J.H. GLAZEMAKER vertaalt. Eerste Deel, Tweede Deel. (2 vols.).
t'Amsterdam, gedrukt by Tymon Houthaak, Voor Jan Rieuwertsz. Boekverkoper, in Dirk van
Assensteeg, in 't Martelaars Boek (vols. I, II); - - in de Beursstraat (III), 1661, 1661, 1684.
Contemp. uniform red half-sheep, marbled boards, worn, spines partly worn off (I,III), plain vellum
(II). (12), 486, (6); (8), 531, (2), 46, 43; (20), 392, 76, 76, (26, 2) pp. Vol. I with some minor
defects: old-time repairs of first quire, some staining at first and last part; otherwise internally very
good.
3,500.-*
First editions in Dutch translation, constituting a uniform-sized set in this form from ca. the

handwriting. Title-pages vols. I, II with same title and a different title-vignette depicting a
geometrical subject. Good to very good copies in solid bindings. The inventory of Spinoza's

First edition. Isaac La Peyrère, French theologian of Marrano background, published in 1643
anonymously Du rappel des Juifs, which was influential in the millenarian circle of Menasseh
ben Israel. In 1642/43 he wrote Praeadamitae, which already contained much of the biblical
criticism of the Tractatus theologico-politicus. This work remained unpublished until he met
in Brussels Queen Christina of Sweden, who urged him to go to Holland and to publish the
work on her expenses. When La Peyrère arrived with the manuscript "he fell into a crowd of
publishers", who wanted to publish the work. In 1655 five editions were published, three of
which by Elzevir (see also next item). Though published anonymously, the authorship was
easily recognized. Condemnations and refutations began to appear shortly. See R.H. Popkin,
Isaac la Peyrère (1987), p. 13-14. Fürst Bibliotheca Judaica III, p. 81. A copy of this first
edition was in the library of Spinoza. Inventory 4to, nr. 28 states: `Praeadamitae. 1655'.

19. MENDELSSOHN, MOSES. Moses Mendelssohn an die Freunde Lessings. Ein Anhang zu Herrn
Jacobi Briefwechsel über die Lehre Spinoza.
Berlin, bey C.F. Voss und Sohn, 1786. 8vo.
Recent blindstamped leather binding. XXIV, 87 pp. Red edges. Very good copy in nice binding.
450.-*
First edition. Mendelssohn's last work, published shortly after his death, edited by J.J. Engel.
The work is written in defense of his lifelong friend Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Jacobi had
accused Lessing for being a Spinozist, which was in his view equal to pantheism or even
atheism. Mendelssohn had already defended Lessing in Morgenstunden, but wanted to be
more precise after Jacobi's publication. It has been argued that this debate caused him so
much sorrow, that it lead to his sudden death. Both his physician Marcus Herz and J.J. Engel
describe in the introduction the last days of the noble Mendelssohn. See Meyer, nr. 334. This
first edition not in Van der Linde. Cfr. nr. 335.
20. [MEYER, LODEWIJK.] - Philosophia S. Scripturae interpres; Exercitatio paradoxa ...
Eleutheropoli, [Amsterdam, Jan Rieuwertsz], 1666. 4to (20 cm.).

Marbled endpapers.[12], 105, [11] pp. Titlepage with inner margin repaired and with early inked
ownership inscriptions and annotations (partially shaved); some early underlining in red and
scattered instances of early inked marginalia. Waterstaining to inner margins in first and last part.
One leaf with short, clean tear from outer margin, not touching text, last two text leaves with upper
outer corners torn away and repaired, with loss of several words.
1,400.-*
First edition, published anonymously. Important hermeneutical treatise, arguing that the Bible
should be interpreted through Cartesian rationality. Lodewijk Meyer (1629-1681), a physician
in Amsterdam, was a friend of Spinoza. According to Bamberger, the book reflects the
philosophical and theological discussions of Spinoza's circle. In 1673 and 1674 reprinted by
Jan Rieuwertsz together with the third edition of the TTP (see item 3 of our catalogue)
Bamberger 3. Van der Linde 56

Dutch translation of the first French book to discuss Spinoza, written by Jean Baptiste
Stouppe (1624-1692) and published in the same year 1673. "Stouppe reveals a relatively
good knowledge of Spinoza, his theories and his followers. He gained that knowledge from

complete copy.
1,100.-*
Two different Dutch translations of this first French book to discuss Spinoza were both made
in 1673 right after publication of the first original Paris edition from the same year.
Comparison shows that the translations were made independent of each other. This one
under fictitious publisher's name, the other issued by the Amsterdam publisher Vander
Gracht. Present edition not in Van der Linde or Bamberger.

(si non magis) exitiosam esse, quam purum putum atheismum... Annexae sunt ejusdem Origines
judaicae.
Hagae-Comitis (The Hague), Apud Thomam Johnson, 1709.
Contemporary leather, worn. Gilt decorated spine. Original spine-label missing. [4 blanc, 22], 199,

This book appeared three years after Wittich's death in 1687. His Theologica pacifica (1683)
had briefly dealt with Spinoza. This posthumous work however conveyed a first-hand
thorough knowledge of Spinoza's books and letters. Wittich's contemporaries accused him,
who knew Spinoza personally, of having written his 'Anti-Spinoza' as a defense of Spinoza in
the guise of a refutation (Bamberger 83). The text is concluded with two letters, an
anonymous letter to Wittich and his reply. The anonymous letter was written by the Spinozist
Frederik van Leenhof. Van der Linde 384.

"The theologian Johann Georg Wachter (1673-1757) [...] was the first to describe Spinoza as
a mystic. His two works on Spinozism got Wachter into some difficulties, because the theses
which they contained were suited for a defense of Spinoza. This is why Wachter later
completely withdrew from the discussion concerning Spinoza." (Schmidt-Biggeman, Baruch
