International seminar «Social Work History in Russia , ??. century» (Report is taken from: <http://www.socwork.net/Conference%20Reports-20051.html> The international research seminar ”History of Social Work in Russia, XX century” has taken place in Saratov, on 18-19 March 2005. The organizers received about 70 responds, out of which about 23 participants were selected according to the relevance to the topic of the seminar and quality of papers. The geography of the presenters ranged from Moscow and St Petersburg, Saratov and Samara to Novosibirsk, Tcheboksary, Stavropol in Russia, as well as Germany, Italy, Sweden and USA. The seminar was held at the Social Anthropology and Social Work department, and supported by the Network for Historical Studies of Gender and Social Work, University of Siegen , University of Utrecht , Center for Social Policy and Gender Studies, Ministry of Health and Social Development of Saratov Region. Co-ordinator of the project History of Social Work in Eastern Europe, Dagmar Schulte from Germany has presented in Saratov the research project results «History of social work in Eastern Europe: an outline of an international comparative research project». The seminar consisted of three sections: «New approaches to the history of social work research», «Early history of social work: pre-Soviet period» and «Social security and social control in Soviet Russia» and was concluded by "History of social work: shapes and tendencies" (for a detailed list of the papers s. under). Professor Mikhail Firsov from Moscow opened the seminar with plenary speech on «History of social work in Russia: tendencies of social formation» Several papers were awarded with a certificate of the best paper, including the following: «In the depths of social hygiene: social work in Russia in the late XIX and early XX centuries» by professor Dmitry Mikhel, «Official charity for prostitutes in prerevolutionary St. Petersburg» by Dr. Marianna Mouravieva, «Gender history: institutionalization, problems, perspectives, research methods» by professor Natalia Pushkareva and on «Policy of social control under the juvenile crime in the USSR (1917 – end of 1980-s)» by Marina Golovisnina. Presentations by foreign researchers were received with the great interest of the participants, including «Early social work in Russia and the USA: parallels and differences» by professor Sharon Templeman from School of Social Work at University of S.F. Austin, Texas, USA on, «Social security, Revolution and Stalinism (1917-1936)» by Dorena Caroli from the Institute of Resistance History in Alfonsine, Italy. The seminar was visited by Dr. Jens Beiderwieden, Alice Salomon University of Applied Science international office's director and coordinator of SOCRATES program, Berlin , Germany . 1 The participants appreciated the life stories by the seniors who survived the II World War and had experience of doing social work or being the clients: the authentic life experience of Nina Voitsekhovskaia, graduate of the «Red town» orphanage in Saratov during the Great World War, and Konstantin Slastukhin's memoirs on «How the system of home-based service was established». During the seminar documentary photos and film-materials on social work history in the USSR from archives of orphanage of ? 2, private collections, and Saratov film archive were displayed. The seminar was arranged as a part of an on-going international research project History of Social Work in Eastern Europe. To make the foreign papers accessible for the Russian audience, they will be translated into Russian.
