m ersten Schneesturm des Jahres fand der Swiss
Ball in den eleganten Räumen des Hotel Pierre an
der 5th Avenue statt. Während draußen das Schneetreiben immer dichter wurde, schaute eine illustre
Gesellschaft im festlichen Cotillion Ballroom einem
abwechslungsreichen Abend entgegen. Auch Ehrengast, die Sexual-Psychotherapeutin Dr. Ruth Westheimer, hatte sich nicht durch das Wetter abschrecken
lassen und belebte dynamisch den Empfang.

charmant von ihrer Zeit in der Schweiz.
Rund 350 Gäste folgten der Einladung von Botschafter
Raymond Loretan (Schweizer Generalkonsul in New
York) und Daniel Würsch, Präsident der Swiss Society
of New York, zu einem wichtigen Highlight des New
Yorker Social Calendars. Seit über 100 Jahren veranstaltet die Swiss Society den Swiss Ball in New York,
der viele Fans und Freunde aus der schweizerischamerikanischen Geschäfts- und Kulturwelt gefunden hat.

In seiner Rede erklärte Botschafter Loretan das Thema
des Abends: Launch der neuen Initiative „Swiss Roots”.
Swiss Roots ist ein Programm, das unter dem Motto
“How Swiss are you” im Jahr 2006 in den gesamten
USA unterschiedlichste Veranstaltungen organisiert,
die sich mit dem Thema Schweizer Wurzeln und Schweizer Leben (wie z.B. Schweizer Qualität) beschäftigen.
Das heißt, auch wer lediglich ein Schweizer Taschenmesser in der Küchenschublade liegen hat, kann sich
fragen “How Swiss am I” und Teil einer Community
werden. In den USA leben knapp eine Million Menschen, die Vorfahren in der Schweiz haben, und nun
kann man per Mausklick in Kürze schnell und zuverlässig etwas über die Familie erfahren. „Swiss Roots
wird der Schweizer Community in den USA neue
Impulse geben und ist ein entscheidender Schritt zu
auf die jüngere Zielgruppe,” erläuterte Lukas Fitze,
Marketing und Kommunikation bei Swiss Roots.
Über Schweizer Wurzeln sprach auch Dr. Westheimer, die der Schweiz auf ewig verbunden ist, da sie
aus Deutschland kommend in Appenzell länger in
einem Kinderheim lebte, in der Schweiz zur Schule

T
he Swiss Ball took place at the exquisite Hotel
Pierre during the first snow storm of the year.
While outside the driving snow came down ever thicker, in
the festive Cotillion Ballroom, in contrast, an
illustrious society gazed upon a richly varied evening.
Even the guest of honor, the sexual therapist Dr. Ruth
Westheimer, hadn’t allowed the weather to keep her
away, and livened up the reception considerably.
Around 350 guests accepted the invitation from Ambassador Raymond Loretan (Swiss General Consul) and
Daniel Wuersch, President of the Swiss Society of New
York, to an important highlight of the New York social
calendar. The Swiss Society of New York has put on
the ball for over a hundred years, and has many fans
and friends in the Swiss-American business and
cultural worlds.
In his speech Ambassador Loretan explained the
theme of the evening: the new “Swiss Roots”
Initiative. “Swiss Roots” is a program, which with
the motto “How
Swiss Are You?”
will implement the
most distinctive
functions through
the entire USA in
2006. They will
concern themselves with the
themes of Swiss
roots and Swiss
life (as, for instance, Swiss
Quality). That means that even
someone who only has a single
Swiss Army Knife in the kitchen
drawer can ask them-selves
“How Swiss Am I?” and become
a part of a community.

In the USA there live a million
people who have relatives in Switzerland. With a
click of the mouse one can quickly and reliably hear
how it’s going with the family. “Swiss Roots will give
a boost to the Swiss community in the USA, and is a
decisive step towards our younger target group,”
elucidated Lukas Fitze, in charge of marketing and
communication for Swiss Roots.
Dr. Ruth Westheimer also spoke about Swiss Roots,
who is forever bound to Switzerland, since she, as
she was coming out of Germany, lived for a long time
in a children’s home, and thereby escaped the Holocaust. With wit and humor the diminutive (five foot,
highest) Dr. Ruth gave the Swiss Society her advice
and told charming stories of her time in Switzerland.
A good-humored evening-accompanied by the Marvin
Austin Orchestra-with much dancing and guest enjoying themselves extremely well. Without doubt, an
event like this can bind a whole community together.I
