La paroisse de Canillo
C’est elle que nous voulons vous
présenter dans ce chapitre.
Située au nord-ouest du pays,
la Paroisse de Canillo est, avec
une superficie de 120,76 Km2,
la plus vaste de la Principauté
d’Andorre. Elle est formée par
diverses agglomérations et
Canillo en est la capitale.
Pourquoi la paroisse de Canillo ?
Canillo, l’une des paroisses située le plus en altitude de l’Andorre, est une destination touristique
contemporaine et de montagne réunissant qualité et
tranquillité. Les vallées de Canillo, un environnement
protégé et des parages de grande beauté qui invitent
à jouir des meilleures expériences actives au sein de
la nature. Soldeu, el Tarter et Canillo, portes d’entrée
à Grandvalira, le domaine skiable le plus grand des
Pyrénées et la plus vaste offre d’activités de neige et
de sports de glisse du pays.
Berceau du sanctuaire de la Vierge de Meritxell,
patronne de l’Andorre, et symbole religieux du pays,
pour découvrir et connaître l’histoire et la culture
andorranes. Avec ses villages et ses agglomérations

This is what we want to present
in this section. It lies in the
northwest of the country and
with an area of 120.76 km2, it
is the largest in the Principality
of Andorra. There are various
villages and Canillo is the
principal urban centre.
Why the parish of Canillo?
Canillo, one of the highest parishes in Andorra, is
a contemporary tourist and mountain destination
with quality and tranquillity. The valleys of Canillo
form a preserved area with places of great beauty
which invite you to enjoy the best active experiences of nature. Soldeu, El Tarter and Canillo are
the doors to Grandvalira, the largest skiing area in
the Pyrenees and the greatest offer of snow activities in the country.

and religious symbol of the country, a sanctuary
where you can understand the history and culture
of Andorra. With its villages and quiet centres,
traditional and active at the same time, offering

obligée si l’on veut mieux connaître l’histoire et la
culture andorranes, sans oublier pour autant le legs
de l’art roman ou les réminiscences romanes avec
le fleuron que constitue, entre autres et sans aucun
doute, l’église de Sant Joan de Caselles.
Si vous nous visitez en décembre ou à l’occasion des
vacances de Noël, nous vous conseillons de parcourir
le Pessebre de Canillo. Une crèche regroupant plus
de 200 figures grandeur nature, qui transforment les
rues du village en un itinéraire caractéristique des
fêtes de Noël dans une typique ambiance d’époque.
Les montagnes et les vallées de la paroisse de Canillo
nous offrent tranquillité et beauté avec la valeur ajoutée faune, flore et géologie autochtone des Pyrénées.
Dans ce sens l’on se doit de souligner le réseau de
chemins et sentiers, refuges et lacs de montagne.
L’architecture des villages et des agglomérations est
typiquement de haute montagne, aussi bien pour les
édifices anciens que pour les modernes. Ceux-ci, sont
effet bâtis dans le respect des normes de construction, en utilisant surtout la pierre et le bois qui en
font des maisons accueillantes et chaleureuses.
Dans nos villages, autochtones et touristes se
mélangent, tout comme les maisons traditionnelles
et les hôtels les plus modernes, la vie quotidienne
et celle des gens en vacances, le tout en parfaite
harmonie.

visit for an understanding of Andorran history and
culture. The country’s Romanesque legacy and
memories are not to ignored, and the church of

If you come visiting during December or in the
Christmas holidays, we recommend going to see
the Nativity Scene in Canillo, where more than
200 life size figures transform the village streets
into a Christmas itinerary with a very seasonal
feel.
In the mountains and valleys of the parish of Canillo we can find tranquillity and beauty, with the
addition of the native animals and flowers and the
typical Pyrenean geology. There is an important
network of mountain paths, refuges and lakes.
The villages have typical high mountain architecture, both in the older buildings and those of the
present day, built according to standards which
are adapted to this warm and welcoming type of
construction, using mostly stone and timber.
In our villages the native people and tourists mix
together, with traditional houses and modern
hotels, every-day life and people on holiday, all
together in great harmony.

Le village de Canillo dispose d’un centre sportif et
ludique nommé « Palau de Gel d’Andorra », où vous
trouverez et pourrez jouir d’installations sportives de
haut niveau, parmi lesquelles une piste de patinage
sur glace aux dimensions olympiques, une piscine
climatisée, ainsi que sauna, courts de tennis, terrains
de squash, gymnase, restaurant, bar et zone réservée
aux enfants.
Nous disposons d’une offre de restauration et de
logements touristiques adaptés à toutes les nécessités et à tous les besoins, avec une gamme allant
des hôtels tranquilles et familiaux de montagne,
aux hôtels plus grands et luxueux avec tous genres
d’installations et services, sans oublier non plus les
appart-hôtels et les appartements de vacances pour
être comme chez soi, ou encore les campings et les
refuges pour ceux qui préfèrent être en contact direct
avec la nature.

paroisse de Canillo est une destination unique durant
les quatre saisons de l’année.
Active experiences abound in all ambits. In the
winter, as a supplement to going skiing, we offer
excursions with snowshoes or skis, trips in dog
sleds and driving snow buggies. And when the
temperature is more agreeable, there are simple
walks, mountain bike downhill rides, horse riding,
climbing, canyoning, via ferrata, archery and golf
at altitude. In short, a great variety of activities all
year round and for everyone.
In the village of Canillo we have a sports and
leisure centre called the Ice Palace of Andorra,
where there are sports facilities at a high level,
among which are an Olympic size ice rink, a
heated swimming pool, sauna, tennis and squash
courts, gymnasium, restaurant, bar and an area
for the children.
There is a good offer of restaurants and tourist
accommodation at all levels, ranging from quiet
family mountain hotels to large and luxurious hotels with all kinds of facilities and services, but not
forgetting the aparthotels and apartments where
you can feel at home, or camp sites and mountain
refuges to be in direct contact with nature.
The parish of Canillo is a unique destination for
its beauty, nature, quality and safety, in all four

Our tourist office, offering information and attention in
Canillo, located at Av. Sant Joan de Caselles, is at your
disposal for 361 days a year (we close on 1 January, 14
March, 8 September and 25 December) for any query or

balisés et signalés et facilement
accessibles, toutefois, cette

d’Envalira-Grau Roig. Il est possible de faire le
chemin aller et retour ou dans un seul sens.
Chemin de Mereig (raquettes)
Point de départ : petit col de Montaup. Route
CS240, kilomètre 6,5
Point d’arrivée : col d’Ordino
Durée : 3 h (aller et retour)
L’itinéraire démarre aux totems (statue Structures auto génératrices), pour continuer en
direction du mirador du Roc del Quer puis, ensuite, par le chemin balisé des Cóms jusqu’aux
bordes de Mereig. De là, il faut reprendre le
chemin d’accès aux bordes, jusqu’à atteindre
de nouveau la route CS240. Attention ! Avant
le dernier virage il faut emprunter le chemin
parallèle à la route de Montaup (CS240). Aller et
retour par le même chemin.
Pic de Casamanya (raquettes ou skis de
montagne)
Point de départ et d’arrivée : route CS240, kilomètre 7,8
Difficulté : moyenne
Durée : en raquettes, 5 h (aller et retour). En skis,
2 h 30 pour l’ascension ensuite, la descente.
L’ascension commence sur le côté droit de la
forêt dite de l’Airola ; une fois la forêt traversée, l’ascension se poursuit par la crête de
la montagne jusqu’au sommet. La descente
en raquettes se fait par le même itinéraire.
La descente en skis de montagne se fait en
empruntant les versants situés sur la gauche et
toujours en direction des plans de Mereig, où se
trouvent les véhicules stationnés.
Il faut progresser par une piste forestière
jusqu’aux bordes de l’Armiana, puis emprunter
le chemin qui rapproche de la rivière de la Vall
del Riu ; franchir alors la rivière et commencer
l’ascension par l’intérieur de la forêt jusqu’à atteindre la borde de Mora (entourée d’une prairie).
De là, contourner la prairie enneigée et poursuivre l’ascension sur la gauche jusqu’au refuge.
La descente se fait par le même itinéraire.
Chemin de l’Obac d’Incles (raquettes)
Point de départ : vallée d’Incles (à côté d’édifices nommés Déu Sol)
Durée : 2.30 h (aller et retour)
Aller et retour par le même chemin
Cet itinéraire se trouve dans la vallée d’Incles,
située entre les villages de el Tarter et Soldeu,
dans le terme de la paroisse de Canillo. La
vallée a une forme de U, caractéristique des
vallées d’origine glaciaire, et l’on y constate
l’utilisation faite par l’homme des parties les
plus ensoleillées, la soulane, pour le fourrage et
l’herbe du bétail. Les zones ombragées étaient
utilisées pour extraire du bois.
Le chemin longe essentiellement le cours de la
rivière d’Incles, qui, en termes écologiques, est
un ruisseau en très bon état et riche en espèces
emblématiques, comme la truite et la grenouille
rousse.
Durant l’année et selon la saison, le parcours
peut changer beaucoup d’aspect à cause de la
neige, du froid, du brouillard ou de l’ensoleillement. Il faut donc être prudent et prendre les
vêtements appropriés.
Comme espèces de végétation les plus significatives, l’on y trouve le sapin, le pin Lericio, le sorbet des oiseleurs, le rhododendron, l’arnica et le
lis jaune ou lis des Pyrénées, parmi tant d’autres.
Quant à la faune, l’on retiendra le vautour fauve,
l’épervier, le renard, le sanglier, le chevreuil et le
mythique grand tétras ou coq des bruyères.

The route starts at the totems (sculpture “Estructures autogeneradores”), continues towards the
viewpoint of Roc del Quer and then goes by the
road signposted from Cóms to Bordes de Mereig.
From there we return to the road leading to the
Bordes, which takes us again back to the CS240
road. Remember that before the last turn, you
need to take the path parallel to the road from
Montaup (CS240). There and back by the same
path.

The climb starts on the right side of the Airola
woods; after the woods, we continue upwards by
the mountain ridge until reaching the summit. The
descent with snowshoes follows the same route.
The descent with mountain skis is by the markings
on the left, always in the direction of the Mereig
plateau, where we have left the vehicle.
We start along a forest track until we reach the
Bordes of Armiana, then following the path which
takes us to the river in the Vall del Riu, we cross
the river and start the climb through the woods
until we reach the Borda at Mora (surrounded by
meadow). From there, we skirt around the left of
the snowy meadow and continue up to the left to
the mountain refuge. The descent is by the same
route.

called Déu Sol)

There and back by the same route
This itinerary is in the Vall d’Incles, which is between the villages of El Tarter and Soldeu, in the
parish of Canillo. The valley is U-shaped, a characteristic of valleys of glacial origin. There is evidence of man’s use of the sunnier parts, the valley
floor, for fodder and grazing for cattle. The more
wooded parts were used for timber.
The path essential follows the course of the River
of Incles, which, in ecological terms, is a brook in
good condition and rich in typical species, such as
the trout and the brown frog.
During the year and depending on the season, the
route may change its shape due to the snow, the
cold, the fog and the sunshine. It is essential to
check on the weather and take suitable clothing.
The most significant plant species to be found
there are fir trees, the black pine, the mountain
ash, rhododendrons, arnica and the Turk’s cap lily,
among many others.
With regard to fauna, there are the common vulture, sparrowhawk, foxes, wild boar, the roe deer
and the legendary capercaillie.

Sant Serni. Canillo
Église de la Sainte Croix. Canillo
Il s’agit de l’église paroissiale de Canillo, consacrée à
Saint Sernin. Son clocher, d’origine romane, fut bâti
au XVIIe siècle. Il est, avec ses 27 m de hauteur le
plus haut clocher des vallées d’Andorre, et il préside
majestueusement le village de Canillo. Le temple est
accroché au massif du Roc del Quer, qui donne son
nom et l’identité à la paroisse. Canillo, qui étymologiquement signifie ‘blanc’, témoigne de la blancheur
de la montagne, avec laquelle elle constitue un tout :
église et rocher du Quer.
Le patron de l’église est Saint Sernin, évêque de
Toulouse et martyr qui vécut durant la première
moitié du IIIe siècle. Le Christ qui se trouve sur l’autel
latéral droit, l’œuvre la plus précieuse de l’église, est
d’un style gothique populaire datant de la fin du XIVe
siècle, en bois polychrome.
Le grand autel possède un retable baroque du XVIIe
siècle. Comme caractéristiques techniques on remarquera qu’il s’agit d’un retable mixte, constitué par une
sculpture en bois polychrome et peinture sur bois. Il
se compose de socle, prédelle, deux panneaux et un
attique et chaque registre est divisé en cinq sections.
Il est présidé par une image représentant Saint
Sernin tenant sa crosse de bon berger, la tête coiffée
de la mitre du maître.
À l’intérieur, l’une des principales œuvres est une
sculpture représentant le Christ en bois polychrome,
de style gothique et datant du XIVe siècle.
Située dans la partie basse du village de Canillo, sur
le bord de la rivière. Cette chapelle du XVIIe siècle
possède en son intérieur un retable baroque du XVIIIe
siècle représentant le calvaire.
Sant Joan de Caselles.
Canillo

La petite chapelle de tradition romane, située dans le
village et consacrée à Saint Barthélemy, et elle date
du XVIIe siècle.
Sant Miquel de Prats. Prats
Dans le petit village de Prats se trouve l’église
romane de Sant Miquel (Saint Michel), dont on peut
admirer le clocher arcade qui lui confère son identité
si particulière.
Sant Pere del Tarter. El Tarter
Située dans le village d’el Tarter, l’église de Sant Pere
(Saint Pierre), bien que de style roman, fut bâtie au
XVIIIe siècle. La sculpture de Saint Pierre, dans la
chapelle consacrée au saint, est l’œuvre de l’artiste
Josep Viladomat.
Sant Jaume de Ransol. Ransol
Au village de Ransol, à 1.745 m d’altitude, nous
trouvons l’église de Sant Jaume (Saint
Jacques), avec une peinture représentant Saint Pierre et datée du XIXe siècle.
Sant Antoni de l’Aldosa.
L’Aldosa
Églises
Cette église est unique dans le
monde de l’art roman, en raison surtout du Christ en stuc du XIIe siècle
qui se trouve à l’intérieur. L’édifice,
bâti entre les XIe et XIIe siècles, suit
le schéma architectural des églises
romanes de l’Andorre.
Le clocher est lombard, de transition.
C’est le seul clocher en Andorre à ne
pas être accolé au corps de l’église.
La grille est un ouvrage populaire
en fer forgé qui ne présente aucune
soudure puisque réalisée uniquement
au feu et au marteau.
Le retable, construit en 1525, est
l’œuvre du maître de Canillo. Au centre
se trouve une sculpture en bois représentant saint Jean l’évangéliste, patron de l’église
dont la fête est célébrée le 27 décembre. Sur le côté
gauche se trouvent les prédelles narrant les miracles
que la tradition attribue au Saint et, sur la droite, les
prédelles du dernier livre de la Bible. La frange située
au-dessus fait référence à la passion et à la mort de
Jésus. Il y a une prédelle au crayon. C’est celle qu’il fut
impossible de récupérer après le vol dont le retable
fut l’objet, en 1935.
Autour de l’église furent découverts les vestiges d’un
cimetière médiéval.
Cette église majestueuse se trouve à 1 km du village
de Canillo.
Sant Bartomeu de Soldeu. Soldeu
Église bâtie au XIXe siècle selon les
modèles romans. Elle se trouve au
village de l’Aldosa.
Musées
Musée de la Moto
Sanctuaire de Meritxell. Meritxell
L’actuel sanctuaire de Meritxell, la vierge de Meritxell
est la patronne de l’Andorre, est un temple contemporain conçu par l’architecte catalan Ricard Bofill et
qui fut inauguré en 1976. Il s’agit d’une construction
tout à fait éclectique, qui synthétise l’œuvre de
l’homme et du paysage qui l’entoure, s’inspirant d’un
mélange de divers styles. Une reproduction de la
taille romane de la Vierge de Meritxell préside l’autel,
l’original ayant disparu dans un incendie en 1972.
À l’intérieur de l’ancien sanctuaire, à présent aménagé
en musée, se trouve l’exposition «Meritxell mémoire».
La Journée de Meritxell est célébrée le 8 septembre,
jour de la fête nationale.
Équilibre, sang froid, deux roues et
l’odeur pénétrante et caractéristique
de l’essence. Ce cocktail s’est reproduit au fil de l’histoire depuis que,
en 1885, Gottlieb Daimler construisit la première motocyclette. Son
évolution, marquée aussi bien par
les progrès technologiques que
par les tendances du design aux
différentes époques, a été parallèle à l’évolution de
l’Humanité l’accompagnant au travail, aux loisirs, au
sport, à la guerre et en temps de paix.
Le Musée de la Moto de Canillo, qui est le premier
musée de ces caractéristiques en Andorre, veut
surtout rendre hommage à ce véhicule si cher qui
mérite, sans aucun doute, une place à part dans les
pages de l’histoire. L’espace accueille les machines
les plus singulières et représentatives de toutes les
périodes, depuis les débuts du XXe siècle jusqu’à nos
jours.

Musée itinérant, 12 empreintes sur le
chemin de Canillo
Un itinéraire à faire à pied, simple et attrayant, par
12 endroits culturellement les plus importants de
la paroisse, et localisés aux environs du village de
Canillo.
L’objectif de cet itinéraire est de montrer les valeurs
patrimoniales, connaître l’architecture religieuse et
jouir de l’incroyable paysage qui entoure toute la
paroisse :

Churches
St. John of Caselles. Canillo
This church is unique in the world of the Romanesque, with its 12th century stuccoed Christ.
The building, dated between the 11th and 12th
centuries follows the architectural scheme of the
Romanesque churches of Andorra.
The bell tower is in the Lombard transitional style.
It is the only bell tower in Andorra which does not
touch the body of the church.
The screen is a popular work. It is remarkable that
there is no welding, it is all done with fire and
hammer.
The altarpiece is a work by the Master of Canillo,
who produced it around 1525. In the centre is the
figure of St. John the Evangelist, patron of the
church. Its festival is 27 December. To the left, the
predella tell of the miracles worked by the saint
according to tradition, and on the right side, there
are the predella of the last book of the Bible. The
border above the altar refers to the Passion and
Death of Jesus. There is a pencilled predella. It is
the part that could not be found after the altarpiece was stolen in 1935.
Around the church are the remains of a medieval
cemetery.
This majestic church is 1 km outside the village of
Canillo.
St. Sernin. Canillo
This is the parish church of Canillo, dedicated to
St. Sernin. Its bell tower, of Romanesque origin, 27
m high and built in the 17th century, is the highest in Andorra and presides majestically over the
village of Canillo. The church is built into the solid
rock of the Roc del Quer, which gives the name
and identity to the parish. Canillo, which etymologically means ‘white’, comes from the whiteness
of the mountain, with which it forms a whole:
church and rock of Quer.
The patron is St. Sernin, bishop and martyr of
Toulouse from the mid-third century.
The crucifix of the right side altar, the most valuable work in the church, is popular gothic from the
end of the 14th century, in polychrome wood.
The main altar has a baroque altarpiece from the
17th century. As technical characteristics, it can
be said that it is a mixed altarpiece, formed by
polychrome carving and painted panel. There is a
basement, predella, two levels and an upper level,

each divided into five sections. It is presided over
by the figure of Sant Serni with a crosier. In his left
hand he carries the crosier of the good shepherd,
and on his head, the mitre of the master.
One of the most important works in the interior is
a 14th century crucifix, in the gothic style and in
polychrome wood.
Meritxell Sanctuary. Meritxell
The existing Sanctuary of Meritxell, patron saint
of Andorra, is a contemporary church designed
by Catalan architect Ricard Bofill and opened in
1976. It is an eclectic construction, a synthesis of
the work of man and the surrounding landscape,
inspired in a mixture of various styles. A reproduction of the Romanesque carving of the Mare de
Déu de Meritxell presides over the altar, as the
original was lost in a fire in 1972.
Inside the old sanctuary, now restored, there is
the exhibition entitled “Memories of Meritxell”.
The saint’s day is 8 September, the Diada of
Meritxell, the national day.
St. Peter of Tarter. El Tarter
In the village of El Tarter, St. Peter’s church,
although in the Romanesque style, was built
in the 18th century. The statue of St. Peter, in
the chapel dedicated to the saint, was made
by the sculptor Josep Viladomat.
St. James of Ransol. Ransol
In the village of Ransol, at an altitude of 1,745
m, is St. James’s church, with a 19th century
canvas of St. Peter.

Located in the lower part of Canillo village,
beside the river. This 17th century hermitage
holds a baroque altarpiece from the 18th
century, representing the Calvary..
St. Bartholomew. Soldeu
A little hermitage in the Romanesque tradition, in the village and dedicated to St.
Bartholomew, dates from the 17th century.
St. Michael of Prats. Prats
In the little village of Prats is the Romanesque St. Michael’s church, with the
remarkable belfry which gives it a special
identity.
Museums
Motorbike Museum
Balance, cool nerve, two wheels and the penetrating and unmistakable odour of benzene. This
cocktail has been reproduced through the years
since in 1885 Gottlieb Daimler built the first
motorbike in history. Its development, marked by
both technological advances and by the design
trends at each moment, has gone in parallel with
the events of humanity and has accompanied it
in work, leisure, sport, in war and in peace.
The Canillo Motorbike Museum is the first museum of these characteristics in Andorra and seeks
to pay homage to this lovable vehicle which
certainly merits a place in the pages of history.
The space houses the most remarkable and
representative machines from all periods, from
the early 20th century to our own day.

A boundary cross dating from the 16th century,
standing on the high road linking the villages of
Canillo and Meritxell. It is a gothic style cross, the
most original of the boundary crosses in Andorra.

magnifiques vues également sur le pic de Casamanya et le rocher del Quer.
Cette vallée d’origine glaciaire –et, de l’avis de
certains, la plus impressionnante de la Principauté d’Andorre– est une zone de pâtures qui
possède une faune et une flore très particulières. Vous y trouverez également un grand
nombre de bordes, constructions séparées de
la maison principale ou des villages où étaient
gardés les outils agricoles.

Route de Montaup, Canillo
Depuis le mirador du Roc del Quer, accessible
à pied (3 m), vous pourrez admirer les vues sur
la vallée de Montaup et sur toute la vallée du
Valira d’Orient, de Soldeu à Encamp.

Vallée ou Coma de Ransol, Canillo
La zone de la Coma est une zone de pâtures
pour bovins et troupeaux de chevaux, avec une
faune et une flore très caractéristiques, ainsi
que de magnifiques vues sur les pics de Milmenut, le col de Jan et le pic de Ransol.

Road from Forn, Canillo
Vall d’Incles, Canillo
From the end of the asphalted road, you can see
the village of Canillo at your feet and magnificent
views of the peak of Casamanya and the Rock of
Quer.
This valley of glacial origin - and, in the opinion of
many people, the most impressive in the Principality of Andorra - is an area of pastures with very
remarkable fauna and flora. Here also there are
a great many rural huts, constructions set apart
from the main house or the villages and used to
store the farming tools.

Road from Montaup, Canillo
From the Roc del Quer viewing point, accessible
on foot (3 m), you can enjoy views over the valley

The area of La Coma is an area for grazing for
cattle and sheep with typical fauna and flora and
magnificent views of the peaks of Milmenut, the
