The show is everywhere: on the Racecourse and on the benches where you can see fancy (and sometimes funny) hats of all kind. Royal Ascot dates back 300 years (it was founded by Queen Anne in 1711) and is attended by the Royal Family, including Her Majesty the Queen, and the high society – it’s really a place to see and be seen! The Queen has owned many winners at Royal Ascot, such as “Estimate”, the horse which won the Gold Cup in 2013 : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/horseracing/royal-ascot/10133607/Royal-Ascot-2013The-Queens-Gold-Cup-victory-with-Estimate-delivers-racings-dream.html WIMBLEDON LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 When? May1, to October 31 2015 - Where? Milano (Italy) The World expo’s theme for this year is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” ”Expo Milano 2015 will provide an opportunity to reflect upon, and seek solutions to, the contradictions of our world. On the one hand, there are still the hungry (approximately 870 million people were undernourished in the period 2010-2012) and, on the other, there are those who die from ailments linked to poor nutrition or too much food (approximately 2.8 million deaths from diseases related to obesity or to being overweight in the same period). In addition, about 1.3 billion tons of foods are wasted every year. For these reasons, we need to make conscious political choices, develop sustainable lifestyles, and use the best technology to create a balance between the availability and the consumption of resources.” according to the official website. It is also known as Easter Holiday, or Mid-Term Break. Large annual spring break festivals take place in various countries, often in the form of music festivals and joined by special nightclub parties, beach activities and accommodation offers. Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is one of the spring breakers’ favorite place in the U.S.A. It all started in the 60’s with the film “Where the boys are” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9ChMimDna4 ), in which college girls met boys while on spring break there. The number of visiting college students immediately jumped from 20,000 to over 50,000. Nowadays, the place attracts more than 350,000 students. Unfortunately, spring break festivals are well known for “binge drinking” and excesses of all kind… PHILEAS World Newsletter SPECIAL EDITION : EARTHQUAKES Nepal, April 2015. A severe earthquake hit Nepal, leading to devastation and death. According to Wikipedia, Earthquakes, (also known as quakes or a tremors) are violent movements of the rocks in the Earth's crust. Earthquakes are usually quite brief, but may repeat over a period of time. They are the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust. This creates seismic waves, which are waves of energy that travel through the Earth. The study of earthquakes is called seismology. Seismology studies the frequency, type and size of earthquakes over a period of time. There are large earthquakes and small earthquakes. Large earthquakes can take down buildings and cause death and injury. Earthquakes are measured using observations from seismometers. The magnitude of an earthquake, and the intensity of shaking, is usually reported on the Richter scale. On the scale, 3 or less is scarcely noticeable, and magnitude 7 (or more) causes damage over a wide area. When the earth moves offshore in the ocean, it can cause a tsunami. This can cause just as much death and destruction as an earthquake. Landslides can happen, too. This is an important part of the Earth's rock cycle.
