MISSION SCIENTIST STATUS REPORT
Main activity before the launch
Before the launch of INTEGRAL, a large fraction of my Mission Scientist activity
was devoted to on-ground calibration of the payload. In such a context, I had
organized the Payload Ground Calibration (PLGC) Working Team, in the
framework of the INTEGRAL Science Working Team (ISWT). Since the
INTEGRAL high energy instruments where not all available at the same time for
joined intensive scientific calibrations in a particle accelerator, and in order to
warrant meaningful scientific calibrations at payload level, the PLGC Working
Team had been committed by ISWT to investigate the possibility of performing
payload calibrations at the beginning of 2002, during the End-To-End Test
period. A detailed report of these calibrations, successfully performed in ESTEC
during three weeks on January-February 2002, can be found in the INTEGRAL
Payload System Calibration Executive Report (Ref: INT-RP-40906).
In both periods immediately preceding and following the INTEGRAL launch, I
have also chaired the Telemetry Allocation Working Group established by
ISWT. The first meeting of this Telemetry Allocation Working Group has been
proven to be a useful manner of tackling controversial issues, such as those
related to telemetry allocation. In such a context, it has been considered helpful
to have such a Group on duty during the commissioning phase.
In the same spirit, I was also involved before the launch of INTEGRAL in
negotiations with IBIS and Russian Academy of Science to resolve conflicts on
Core Program research topics related to galactic black hole systems and
superluminal sources.
Main activity after the launch
After the launch of INTEGRAL, most of my Mission Scientist activity was
devoted to communication actions towards the scientific community as well as
towards the general public.
Actions towards the scientific community
As far as the scientific community is concerned, my permanent action was to
attract towards INTEGRAL new scientific communities (such as particle
astrophysicists and nuclear physicists). In such a context, I have contributed to
studies the electron-positron annihilation emission as measured by SPI in the
central region of the Galaxy in the framework of astrophysical theories and in of
theories involving new physics, such as the annihilation of a new kind of light
dark matter particle. These studies succeeded to popularize INTEGRAL in

several scientific communities somewhat aloof from the major INTEGRAL
scientific themes.
I have also continued to motivate studies related to the Galactic nucleus, in
close relationship with observations performed in the very high energy gammaray band with the HESS telescope, as well as making of INTEGRAL/IBIS maps
of extended emission regions, such as those induced by clusters of galaxy.
Finally, I have presented the two first years of INTEGRAL results to the
Astrophysics Advisory Committee of the French Space Agency.
