Item 1 •
Introduction
J. Bertrand
Discussion of the importance of the European Congress of Chemical Engineering
with reference to the BASF Megatrends (Growing and Aging Population,
Urbanization, Energy Demand and Climate Protection, and Mobility and
Communication) as presented by F.Seitz (BASF) in his plenary lecture on 26/09/11. It
was acknowledged that as chemical engineers, we must identify the scientific needs
that are required to contribute significantly to the megatrends. The importance of the
interaction between chemical engineers and chemists was also pointed out. Mixing is
an important part of the chemical industry and the methods that we have developed
in our specific domain of expertise can help contribute to the objectives of the
process industries.
Item 2
New members of the working party
J. Bertrand
Prof. Rufat Abiev (Russia)
Prof. Abiev works as the St Petersburg Institute of Technology. He was
nominated as delegate to the EFCE Working Party on Mixing (WPM) by the Scientific
Council on Chemical Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The
nomination was approved by the EFCE and the WPM in March 2011. Prof. Abiev’s
professional activities are summarised in the CV given in Appendix 1. In terms of
research, he has several Russian grants and has established cooperations with other
countries in Europe, in particular Germany and Finland.
Prof. José Carlos Lopes (Portugal)
José Carlos Lopes is a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering
at the University of Porto and conducts his research in the Laboratory of Separation
and Reaction Engineering. He and his group (including Dr. Ricardo Santos and Dr.
Madalena Dias) work in the area of mixing in chemical engineering applications (see
CV in Appendix 2) and he wishes to become a member of the EFCE WPM. There
exist two possible ways to become a member of a EFCE Working Party: nomination
by the national member society or election by the current members of the Working
Party. After assessment of his CV, the WPM members present at the meeting agreed
to elect Prof. Lopes as a member of the WPM.
The Chairman/Secretary of the WPM will now proceed to inform the President of
EFCE and the member society of this election.
Discussion concerning other members
Prof. Barabash (Russia). A letter addressed to the chairman of the WPM in
10/2010 states that Prof. Barabash still wishes to be a member of the WPM however,
funding has been difficult in past years and has restricted his participation in
meetings. Ivan Fort suggested to Rufat Abiev to find out if the Russian member
society can suggest someone to replace Prof. Barabash in the WPM.
Paul Mavros (Greece). Although Paul Mavros has not been present at the
WPM meetings in the past couple of years, he still remains very active in the area of
mixing. Currently Paul is a guest member of the WPM; Ivan Fort suggests that we
ask the Greek member society to nominate Paul as an official delegate of the WPM.
Poland. Poland has a very active mixing community and Ivan Fort suggests
nomination of a second Polish member (possibly from industry) in the WPM.
UK. Alvin Nienow is an honorary guest member; Gul Oscan-Taskin and Mike
Yianneskis are the current delegates. Ivan Fort asked about Mike’s current
professional activity and whether there is need to consider a new UK member of the
WPM. Since no UK members were present, the discussion was no further pursued.
Jarmo Söderman (Finland). Jarmo Söderman has not attended WPM
meetings or mixing conferences for a number of years and his current activity in the
area of mixing was questioned by Ivan Fort. Joelle Aubin affirmed that his email
address is still valid and that he had sent his apologies for not being able to attend
the meeting.
Item 5 •
Activities of the national working parties
All participants
Italy (A. Brucato)
The International Conference on Biotechnology is being organised in Palermo. He
pointed out that there is a strong presence of mixing in the biotech industry and that
the manufacturing of drugs, health and food products involve mixing.
Germany (R. Gleiser)
A list of the German mixing party activities is summarised in Appendix 3. The
German WPM tries to interact and exchange with other national process engineering
parties; in the past activities with the CFD and the multiphase flow groups have been
conducted.
Poland (J. Baldyga)
The Polish mixing conference was held in June 2011 and chaired by Prof Z.
Jaworksi. The meeting was successful with about 60 participants, however few were
from industry.
Czech Republic (I. Fort)
A session on mixing is planned for the next CHISA conference.
France (J. Bertrand)
The French national society (SFGP) congress will be held in Lille in December 2011.
Around 400 papers will be presented; <10 of these directly deal with mixing. The
reality is is that we now must present the work differently in order to get funding;
people are still active in mixing but have to present it indirectly. The national activities
on mixing are also presented this way and are grouped within the Working Party
‘Intensification of reactors and reactor engineering’.
Item 4 •
Web site
J. Aubin
The WPM web site is finished. An EFCE address has been defined:
http://mixing.efce.info/
Members are invited to send J. Aubin any relevant information (news, jobs,
courses…) that they wish to appear on the website.
Item 5
Mixing events in 2011 and ahead
I. Fort
See Appendix 4 for a list of the 2011 and 2012 events.
14th European Mixing Conference in Poland 2012
J. Baldyga
th
The 14 European Conference on Mixing will be held from September 10-14 in
Warsaw Poland. The Conference Chair is Prof. J. Baldyga. The organizing committee
will composed of members principally from J. Baldyga’s group.
Item 6
The topics of the conference are yet to be finalized but will possibly include mixing in
biotechnology applications, crystallization, microreactors and process intensification.
Time line for deadlines:
- abstracts – Jan 2012
- extended abstracts (4-6 pages for proceedings) – March/April
A number of papers selected by the session chairmen will be invited for publication in
a special issue of ChERD after the event.
Lectures will be presented in a single session (no parallel sessions).
Participants from industry will only be required to submit a short abstract (extended
abstract only if they wish) – this was decided in order to promote the participation of
industrialists. It was also discussed that the plenary and/or keynote lectures should
be given by as many industrialists if/when possible.
J. Baldyga will send J. Aubin all of the necessary information concerning the
conference so that it is put on the WPM website.
Item 7
Awards
All
The Young Researcher award and the Lifetime Recognition award will both be given
during the 14th European Conference on Mixing in September 2012.
The Young Researcher award of the WPM is equivalent to the EFCE Excellence
award and will be funded by the EFCE. The requirements of this award will be the
same as those defined by the EFCE for the Excellence award. J. Aubin will get these
rules from the EFCE and send them to the WPM members.
For the moment there is no funding for the Lifetime Recognition award. Industrial
funding?
J. Aubin (WPM secretary) is to send an email to the WPM members inviting them to
nominate persons for the Young Researcher award and the Lifetime Recognition
award by March 2012. These nominations will be sent directly to the WPM Chairman.
Once the nominations are collected, the awards committee will be defined: if a
member of the official awards committee is a nominee, he/she will be asked to step
back from the decision making process.
Item 8 •
Miscellaneous
All participants
Nothing.
Item 9 •
Next WPM meeting
All participants
The next WPM meeting will be held during the 14th European Conference on Mixing
in Poland, September 2012.
J. Bertrand will resign from the position of WPM Chairman at the next meeting in
2012. The WPM members will therefore need to re-elect a new chairman at this time.
Meeting finished at 19:40.
