Quelle est, aujourd’hui, la pertinence de l’avant-garde ?
Une quinzaine d’artistes contemporains réputés engagent
le dialogue avec leurs prédécesseurs, d’Ensor et Munch aux
mouvements qui virent le jour au lendemain de la guerre. Le
choix des artistes contemporains comme Marlene Dumas
et David Claerbout, résonnant avec leurs propres œuvres,
nous ouvrent les yeux sur un cadre référentiel inédit de l’art
moderne. L’avant-garde a encore de beaux jours devant elle.

How relevant is this pioneering art today? Around
15 leading contemporary artists enter into dialogue with
colleagues from the historical avant-garde, from Ensor and
Munch to the new movements just after the war. The choice of
contemporary artists as Marlene Dumas and David Claerbout,
and the dialogue with their own work, forces us to look at these
key works from modern art in a different light. The power of the
avant-garde seems to have plenty more in reserve.

EXPRESSIONISM IN THE 1950’S AND 1960’S
Populaire schilderkunst is net als muziek en dans
onlosmakelijk verbonden met het dagelijks leven in
de Democratische Republiek Congo. Ze vormt een
blauwdruk van het collectieve geheugen. Dat zie je
goed in deze tentoonstelling die schilderijen toont
uit de periode 1968-2012. Portretten, landschappen
en allegorische schilderijen wisselen af met stedelijke
taferelen, historische figuren en kritische reflecties op
religie, politiek en maatschappelijke problemen. Humor is
daarbij nooit ver weg.

In de turbulente jaren na de Tweede Wereldoorlog trok
Japan kunstenaars van wereldformaat aan. Hun revolutionaire
experimenten en performances oefenden een sterke invloed
uit op artistieke bewegingen in de westerse underground van
de jaren ’60 en ’70. BOZAR toont een greep uit deze artistieke
bewegingen, waaronder het Japanse avant-gardecollectief Gutai.
Deze jonge kunstenaars kantten zich tegen oude opvattingen in
de kunst en brachten nieuwe ideeën in de praktijk.
Au même titre que la musique et la danse, la peinture
populaire est intimement liée à la vie quotidienne en
République démocratique du Congo. L’univers de la
peinture porte l’empreinte de la mémoire collective,
comme l’illustre à merveille cette exposition présentant
des tableaux réalisés entre 1968 et 2012. Portraits,
paysages et peintures allégoriques y côtoient des
toiles d’inspiration urbaine et historique, suscitant
une réflexion critique sur la religion, la politique et les
problèmes sociaux, souvent teintée d’une légère touche
humoristique.
Durant les années turbulentes qui suivirent la Seconde
Guerre mondiale, le Japon a attiré une multitude d’artistes. Leurs
expérimentations et performances révolutionnaires ont ensuite
exercé une grande influence sur les mouvements artistiques de la
scène underground occidentale des années ’60 et ’70. BOZAR en
présente une sélection, exposant notamment l’œuvre du collectif
japonais avant-gardiste Gutai. Ces jeunes artistes se sont opposés
aux anciennes conceptions en intégrant de nouvelles idées dans
leur pratique artistique.

Just like music and dance, popular painting is
inextricably bound with daily life in the Democratic
Republic of Congo. It forms a blueprint of the collective
memory. That is made clear in this exhibition of paintings

70s. BOZAR is putting on a selection of these artistic movements

kunstenaars de dialoog aan met collega’s uit de historische
avant-garde, van Ensor en Munch tot de nieuwe bewegingen
net na de oorlog. De keuze van de hedendaagse kunstenaars
als Marlene Dumas en David Claerbout, en de dialoog
met hun eigen werk, doen je met andere ogen kijken naar
ijkpunten uit de moderne kunst. De kracht van avant-garde
blijkt nog lang niet uitgewerkt.

En collaboration avec Tate Liverpool, la rétrospective ambitieuse
de l’artiste français Yves Klein viendra à BOZAR au printemps 2017.
Klein s’est fait connaître grâce à ses monochromes « bleu marine ».
Comme nul autre, son art exprime l’idée d’une infinité spirituelle
et sa prédilection pour les rituels mystiques. À travers ses œuvres
picturales et ses performances spectaculaires, Yves Klein est
considéré comme le précurseur du happening et du body art. Se
composant de chefs-d’œuvre jamais exposés et d’images rares,
cette exposition se propose de vous faire découvrir l’œuvre de cet
artiste d’avant-garde et les nouvelles perspectives qu’il a ouvertes
sur le monde de l’art.

Along with Tate Liverpool, the ambitious retrospective on
French artist Yves Klein comes to BOZAR in the spring of 2017.
Klein, famous for his ultramarine monochromes, produces works
that are interpretations of his ideas on spiritual infinitude and
his penchant for mystic rituals. His exceptional visual pieces and
spectacular performances were forerunners of the happening
and body art. This exhibition explores his ground-breaking oeuvre
through unseen masterpieces and rarely-exhibited visual works.

et le Palais des Beaux-Arts décernent la plus
importante distinction pour les jeunes talents
belges. Aujourd’hui, nous présentons une nouvelle
formule et braquons nos projecteurs sur des
artistes qui ont déjà bâti une belle carrière en
Belgique. Avec ce prestigieux prix, le jury souhaite
leur offrir un tremplin vers une reconnaissance
internationale.

This exhibition sheds new light on Pablo Picasso’s
sculptures, a lesser known aspect of the artist’s oeuvre. Even
though Picasso was a trained painter, throughout his life he
experimented with various three-dimensional materials and
techniques. His sculptures are some of the most radical of
the twentieth century. After the overwhelming success of the
show at the MoMA (New York), BOZAR is exhibiting along with
the Musée national Picasso-Paris around eighty sculptures in
dialogue with paintings, ceramics and ethnographic sculptures
from his private collection.

Cette exposition jette un nouveau regard sur un aspect
moins connu de l’œuvre de Pablo Picasso : la sculpture. Si ce
dernier était peintre de formation, il a cependant innové tout
au long de sa vie avec divers matériaux et techniques en trois
dimensions. Ses sculptures comptent parmi les plus radicales
du vingtième siècle. Après le succès de l’exposition au MoMA
(New York), BOZAR expose à son tour, en collaboration avec
le Musée national Picasso-Paris environ quatre-vingts pièces
sculptées de l’artiste ainsi que des peintures, céramiques et
figurines ethnographiques issues de sa collection privée.

naar het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in de lente van 2017. Klein
werd bekend met zijn ultramarijnblauw monochromen. Als geen

zijn voorliefde voor mystieke rituelen. Yves Klein werd met zijn
