These devices have the capability of collecting multiple components from a single donation with reduced collection times. Subject to Health Canada approval, the next phase of this multi-phased automated collection project at Canadian Blood Services will be to introduce the collection of double platelets on these new devices in February 2009. A double platelet, or two platelet products collected from the same donor at the same time, will have the same donation number however will be issued to hospitals as separate components with different product codes. The collection of double platelet products will promote operational efficiencies as more platelets are made available while reducing the actual number of procedures performed. Male donors with high platelet counts will be targeted for this program. Canadian Blood Services is pleased to provide you with a listing of the new Component Codes and Component Names. This communication provides you with the following: 1. A listing of all component codes and names associated with this change (Attachment 1). 2. Samples of the final container label that will support testing for your blood bank information system and scanner technology (Attachment 2). You will be notified if there are any subsequent changes as these labels have not yet been approved by Health Canada. (Note: Please contact your hospital liaison if you encounter difficulties scanning these labels and require another copy.)
