Prerequisites
Anytwo300-levelFrenchliteratureorculture/civilizationcoursesorconsentofinstructor.This
courseisthefirstpartofathree-coursesequence(428,429,430)onFrenchculture.Frenchmajors
mustcompletetwooutofthethreecoursesinthissequence.IfyouareaFrenchmajorwhowants
tocompletetheresearchrequirementinthiscourse,pleaseinformtheinstructoratthebeginning
ofthesemester.
WorkLoad
Inthiscourse,youcanexpecttospend2.5hoursperweekinclass(participatinginlectureand
discussion,aswellasleadingclassdiscussion)andbetween6-9hoursperweekathomepreparing
forclass(reading,preparingvarioushomeworkassignments),writingessays,studyingforquizzes.
Overthecourseofthesemesteryouwillspend37.5hoursinclassandapproximately50hours
doingreadingassignments,20hoursdoinghomework,12hoursstudyingforquizzes,and30hours
researchingandwritingthevariousdraftsofthefinalpaper.Totaltimerequiredforthiscourseis
approximately149.5hours.
CourseOverview
Continuetoimproveyourreading,listening,speaking,andwritingproficiencyinFrenchandlearn
aboutthefoundationsofFrenchcultureandsociety.Wewillfollowtheevolutionofart,ideas,
literature,politics,andsocietyduringtheMiddleAgesandRenaissanceandstudythedifferent
relationshipsbetweentheseaspectsofthecountry’shistory.
AttendanceandParticipation
Ahighlevelofparticipationisexpectedofallstudentsinclass.Pleasecomepreparedtodiscussthe
materialforeachdayandtoanswerstudyquestionsinclass.Youshouldparticipateactivelyinclass
discussioneverydaywehaveclass.Participationwillbegradedonadailybasis.Youwillreceivea
runningparticipationgradeatacoupleofpointsduringthesemester.
Regularattendanceisrequired.Afterthesecondabsence,anyunexcusedabsencewilllowerthe
finalparticipation/attendancegradeby5%.Anyuseoflaptops,cellphonesorotherhandheld
devicesduringclass(unlesswehaveaclassemergencyorneedtocalltechnologyservices)isnot
permittedandwillnegativelyaffectyourparticipationgrade.Notextingortapping-eventolookup

Theschedulebelowgivesageneralsenseofwhatwewillbecoveringeachweek.Thespecific
readingassignmentforeachclasssession,alongwithstudyquestions,willbepostedonourD2L
website.Reviewthestudyquestionsbeforeyoustartthereading.Youwillbeaskedtoanswersome
ofthestudyquestionsinwriting(seebelow).Thestudyquestionswillalsobethestartingpointfor
classdiscussion.Beingpreparedtodiscussandgiveanswerstoallormostofthestudyquestionsin
classiscentraltoclassparticipation.Thisispartofbeingpreparedforclassandispartofthe
participationgrade.
Homeworkassignments
Homeworkwilltaketheformofwrittenresponsestoourstudyquestions(asmentionedabove).
Youwillwritea200-300wordresponsetoonequestionaboutonceaweek,eitherfortheMonday
classortheWednesdayclass,andyouwillpostitonourD2Ldiscussionboard.Inordertocount,
responsesmustbesubmittedtothediscussionboardby12pmonthedayoftheclassforwhich
theywereassigned.Theboardwillnolongeracceptpostsafter12pm.Ifotherstudentshaveposted
aresponsetothesamequestionbeforeyou,youmustreadtheirresponsesbeforeyouwriteyours.
Youcanrespondtoaclassmate’ssubmissionorgoinadifferentdirection,butineithercaseyou
shouldaddsomethingnewtothediscussion.Youshouldnotrepeatwhatothershavealreadysaid.
ThegoalofthehomeworkassignmentistohaveyoupracticeyourwrittenFrenchthroughoutthe
semesterinpreparationforthepaperyouwillwriteandhandinattheendofthesemester.With
thisinmind,yourhomeworkassignmentswillbegradedonbothlanguageandcontent(aswillbe
thecaseforyourfinalpaper).Yourpostsshouldbebasedonyourattentivereadingandanalysisof
theassignedreading.Iencourageyoutoquotethetexttoillustrateyourargument.Thisservesto
demonstratehowyouranalysisandanswersaregroundedinthetext.
Quizzes
Therewillbetwoinclassexamscoveringmaterialfromthelecturesandreadings.Theexamsserve
asagaugeofyourlisteningandreadingcomprehensionaswellasyourengagementwiththe
readingsandshortlectures.Besuretotakenotesduringtheclassroomlectures.
ResearchPaper
ThepaperwillbewritteninFrenchandmustbeonatopicconcerningMedievaland/or
RenaissanceFrenchculture(literature,thearts,society,etc).Thecorefocusofthepaperwillbethe
analysisofaspecificprimarydocumentorseveralprimarydocumentsrelatedtothetopic.Topic
suggestionsandformatwillbeprovidedseparatelyandyouwillbeabletomeetwiththeinstructor
orexchangeemailstohelpyouchooseatopic.
Standardpaperrequirementsforundergraduates:Threesecondaryprintsources(in
additiontotheprimarydocumentthepaperwillbeanalyzing)shouldbeconsulted.Atleast
twoofthesecondarysourcesmustbeinFrench.Theminimallengthofthepaperis1500
words(atleast5pagesdoublespaced);
PaperrequirementsforgraduatestudentsandstudentswhowishtocompletetheL&S
researchrequirementinthisclass:fivesecondaryprintsources(inadditiontothe
primarydocumentthepaperwillbeanalyzing)shouldbeconsulted.Atleastthreeofthe
secondarysourcesmustbeinFrench.Theminimallengthforthepaperis3000words(10
pagesdoublespaced).
Thepaperwillbedoneinseveralstagesincluding(1)topicproposal,(2)thesisandabstract
proposal,(3)firstdraft,(4)finaldraft.Moreinformationontheformatofthepaperandduedates
willbedistributedinclassandonD2Lsoon.Mostofthedatesareonthesyllabus(seebelow).
ExtraCredit
Youwillhavetheopportunitytocompleteuptothreeextracreditassignmentsrelatedtothe
FestivalofFilmsinFrench(12-21February):onetothreefilmreviewsinFrenchoffilmsinthe
festival(200-300wordsforeachreview).Iwillaccepttheseextracreditassignmentsuntil
February29th.
