LAUDATO Sí
On June 18 of last year, Pope Francis issued his
Encyclical ``Laudato sí''. This phrase means ``Praise be
You'', and it is the opening line of St. Francis of Assisi's
Canticle of the Sun. In this poem, St. Francis praises God
for all of creation. Pope Francis joins with him in this letter
concerning the ``Care of the earth, our common
home''. The Encyclical is about ecology - the care of
the earth.
I would just like to underline some of the main
points that the Holy Father makes.
1. The danger to the earth is from human
selfishness. Over and over again, the Holy
Father brings home the point that there is a
grave danger to the world that we inhabit - an
ecological crisis. There is danger to the water,
the climate, the heat, the different forms of life and the danger is the way the human race is
polluting and misusing the earth. The danger
comes because humans have short selfish goals,
and not long-sighted communal goals. We have a debt to
future generations to hand on a safe and clean world.
2. All of reality is interconnected. It is not only the
earth, but all of reality, that is affected by the misuse of
the earth. Unemployment, mass migrations of people,
inequality, poverty, even war result from the misuse of the
earth for selfish reasons. The world is a interconnected
reality given to us by God.
3. The problem of the ``techno-economic paradigm''.
The Pope says that one of the major problems is that
we measure the value of what we do by two false
standards - is it technologically advanced? and does it
make money for me? It is almost as if we allow other
standards to fall away, as long as science progresses and
money is made. The Holy Father says that this has
become so ingrained in modern culture, that we do not
make choices that are for the good of the world and the
good of the poor.
4. We need a spiritual ecological conversion.
The Holy Father teaches that, as in other areas
of life, the way we use the world that God has
given us requires self-examination, repentance
and the striving after spiritual values.
5. We need a change in lifestyle. Chapter Six
is dedicated to urging us to change our lifestyles.
It talks about consumerism and overcoming the
false values of the market. While the Pope does
address the greater issues that the mass market
causes, he urges us to adopt a more practical,
ecological, caring lifestyle that will bring about significant
changes in society. You can ask yourself whether you
feel the need to buy every new thing that is advertised,
and whether re-cycling and waste management are
important to you.
It is significant that the Pope of the Catholic Church has
written a document about ecology. He has done so not
because he is a politician, but because he is the teacher
of moral life, and in the end, these are questions of value,
love, right and wrong.

Every year, Bishop DiMarzio asks us to welcome a
Missionary Appeal and to help them with a collection
Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 13-14, we will have a visit
from the Congregation of the Marists
LAUDATO Sí
Le 18 juin de l'année dernière, Pape François a donné
sa Lettre Encyclique ``Laudato sí''. Cette phrase veut
dire ``Loué sois-Tu'', et elle est le commencement de la
Cantique du Soleil de St-François d'Assise. Dans ce
poème, St. François loue Dieu pour toute la création.
Pape François se joint avec lui dans cette lettre qui se
concerne avec le ``Soin de la terre, notre maison
commune''. L'Encyclique parle de l'écologie - le soin de
la terre.
J'aimerais seulement souligner quelques points
principaux que le Saint Père enseigne.
1. Le danger à la terre vient de l'égoïsme
humain. Combien de fois le Saint Père insiste
sur l'idée qu'il y a un grand danger au monde que
nous habitons - une crise écologique. Il y a
danger à l'eau, au climat, la chaleur, les
différentes formes de vie - et ce danger est la
façon de laquelle la race humaine souillie et
maltraîte la terre. Le danger vient parce que les humains
ont des buts courts et égoïstes, non pas des buts
communaux à longs voyants. Nous avons un devoir aux
générations futures à leur remettre un monde secur et
propre.
2. Toute la réalité est interconnectée. Ce n'est pas
seulement la terre même, mais toute la réalité qui est
affectée par l'abus de la terre. Le désemploi, les
migrations massives, l'inégalité, la pauvreté, même les
guerre viennent de l'abus de la terre pour des raisons
égoïstes. Le monde est une réalité interconnectée qui
nous a été donné par Dieu.
3. Le problème du paradigme ``technoéconomique''. Le Pape dit qu'un des problèmes

majeurs est que nous mesurons la valeur de ce que nous
faisons par deux normes fausses - est-ce que c'est
avancé technologiquement? et produit-il de l'argent pour
moi? C'est presque nous laissons les autres normes à
tomber, si la science avance et l'argent se fait. Le Saint
Père dit que ceci est tellement enraciné dans la culture
moderne, que nous ne faisons pas des choix qui sont
pour le bien du monde et le bien des pauvres.
4. Il faut une conversion écologique
spirituelle. Le Saint Père enseigne que, comme
dans les autres domaines de la vie, notre façon
d'utiliser le monde que Dieu nous a donné exige
l'auto-examination, le repentance et l'effort de
réaliser les valeurs spirituels.
5. Il faut changer le style de vie. Chapitre Six
est dédié à nous exhorter à changer nos styles de
vie. Il parle du consumérisme et de vaincre les
faux valeurs du marché. Tandis que la Pape se
dirige aux questions majeures des causes du marché
massif, il nous exhorte aussi à adopter un style de vie
plus pratique, plus écologique, plus intéressé, lequel
réalisera des changements significatifs dans la société.
Vous-mêmes, vous pourrez vous demander si vous
sentez la nécessité d'acheter toute chose nouvelle qui se
vend, et si le recyclage et le controle du gaspillage sont
importants pour vous.
Il est significatif que le Pape de l'Église Catholique a
écrit un document sur l'écologie. Il ne l'as pas fait comme
un politicien, sinon parce qu'il est le maître de la vie
morale, et enfin, celles-ci sont des questions de valeur,
d'amour, du bien et du mal.

LAUDATO SÍ
El 18 de junio de este año, el Papa Francisco dio su
Carta Encíclica ``Laudato sí''.
Este frase quiere
``Alabados seas'', y es el comienzo del Cántico del Sol de
San Francisco de Asís. Este este poema, San Francisco
alaba a Dios para toda la creación. El Papa Francisco se
junta con él en esta carta que trata del ``Cuidado de la
tierra, nestra casa común''. La Encíclica habla de la
ecología - el cuidado de la tierra.
Me gustaría subrayar algunos puntos principales
ue el Santo Padre enseña.
1. El peligro a la tierra vienje del egoismp
humano. Cuántas veces el Santo Padre insiste
aue la idea que hay un gran peligro al mundo que
habitamos - une crisis ecológica. Hay un peligro
al agua, al tiempo, al calor, a las diferentes
formas de vida - y ese peligro viene de la manera
en la cual la raza humana ensucia y maltrata la
tierra. El peligro viene porque los hombres tienen
metas cortas y egoistas, y no metas comunales a larga
vista. Temeos un deber hacia las generaciones futuras, a
entragrles un mundo seguro y limpio.
2. Toda la realidad es entreconectada.
Ns es
solamante la misma tierra, pero toda la realidad que sufre
los afectos del abuso de la tierra. El desempleo, las
migraciones masivas, la desigualdad, la pobreza, aún las
gurras vienent del abiso de la tierra por razones eqoistas.
El mundo es una realidad entreconectada que nos ha
sido dado por Dios.
3. El problema del paradigma ``tecnoeconómico''. El Papa dice que uno de los problemas
mayores es que nosotros medimos el valor de lo que
hacemos con dos normas falsas - ¿está avanzado
tecnológicamente? yu ¿produce el dinero para mí? Es
casi que dejamos las otroas normas caer, si la cber, si la
science avanza y el dinero se hace. El Santo Padre dice
que esto es tan arraigado en la cultura moderna, que
nosotros no hacemos decisiones que son para el bien del
mundo ni el bien de los pobres.
4. Falta una conversión ecológica espiritual.
El Santo Padre enseña que, como en otras áreas
de la vida, nueata manera de utilizar el mundo
que Dios nos ha dado exige la auto-examinación,
el arrepentiemiento y el esfuerzo para realizar
valores espirituales.
5. Hay que cambiar el estilo de vida. El
Capítulo Seis se dedica a exhortarnos a cambiar
nuestros estilos de vida.
Habla del
consumerismo y de vencer los falsos valores del
mercado. Miesntras el Papa se dirige a cuestiones
mayores de las causas del mercado masivo, tam,bién nos
anima a adoptar un estilo de vfa más práctica, más
ecológica, más cuidadora, el cual realizará cambios
significativos en la sociedad.

preguntarse si sienten la necesidsd de comprar toda cosa
nueva que se ofrece, y si el re-ciclaje y el control de
gaspillar son importantes para ustedes.
Es significativo que el Papa de l Iglesia Católica ha
escrito un documento sobre la ecología. No lo ha hecho
como un político, sino porque es el maestro de la vida
moral, y en fin, éstas son preguntas de valor, de amor,
del bien y del mal.
