Today, 26 November 2012, we attended the funeral service for Lisle
Today, 26 November 2012, we attended the funeral service for Lisle Grim. It is always difficult for those who remain and mourn. For some reason I thought that I have never attended a funeral for the first twenty years of my life whilst I lived in Egypt. I seem to remember that the practice was to stay away from cemeteries whilst one has father and mother still alive. For me, the nearest experience was with scouts forming a guard of honour, at school, around the coffin of Mr Herbelin our school principal, whilst various dignitaries paid their respects. I keep in mind that our scout-hall (three troupes, three packs and the rover clan) was located on school grounds. He passed away very suddenly. Naturally when some of my grand-uncles and later my grandmother passed away silence and no-merriments were expected for a long time. The visible observance of mourning was strict. Particularly for close relatives. I remember my Father wearing a black tie for a year and a black armband on his jacket for a lesser period. Similarly women “en deuil” (mourning) would wear a black dress for six month, this would be followed by six month of “demi-deuil” (half mourning). No singing, no music, no radio, no cinema for a long time. After a while life would restart and we could listen to news bulletins. I have to tell you of the demise of Zalman Padwo this morning. He died in St Etienne and his funeral will be held in ST Etienne tomorrow morning at 11.30am. His son Joel is here from Israel and he asked me to notify as many of his friends as I can. I rang Bero this morning and he will send an email to the friends he knows. It is another closure to a chapter in our long history of association .. but I suppose it is a blessing in disguise as he has been suffering a very long time. If you wish to convey your condolences enclosed please find his son Joel's email address [email protected] Hope you are both keeping well and look forward to talking to you under more auspicious circumstances. Kindest regards and very big hugs.
