WELCOME TO MRS MONNIER’S ENGLISH CLASS !!!
I wish you all the best for this school year. ☺
I gave you some information about this new schoolyear then we started our first topic :
VIDEO 1 : It is an extract from the movie THE SPANISH APARTMENT/ FLAT
It is about a French student –Xavier- who is looking for a flat and who would like to rent a flat/ to share a flat. This is
the interview scene; the flat mates from different countries interview him to see whether he can share the flat with
them/ where he comes up to their expectations
OUR TOPIC ?
FLAT SHARING : flat mates and tenants
Flat mates = people who share the same flats/ tenants= people who rent a flat from a landlord or a landlady = flat
owner
WHAT ARE FOR YOU THE ADVANTAGES OF FLAT SHARING?
-
It is cheaper than renting a flat alone : you share the rent and save money
It’s more convivial You don’t feel lonely and miserable
It enables you to live in community
It allows you to share the household choreS
HOMEWORK : for next time, fill in your identity form and send me a mail; have your parents sign the note/ complete
the advantages and think of the qualities you must have to share a flat
Thursday Semptember 8th
We started with your “bac” and we read together a series of questions that you may find in your exam.
BE CAREFUL
You should use the vocabulary listed on the right each time you have an essay or even a short
homework to do to practice using it as much as possible.
The we went on with the advantages of sharing a flat
Here are a few other ideas to complete your lesson :
-
It’s easier when you arrive abroad/ in a foreign country: it enables you to discover the place with someone
who knows it already/ easier to find your way through the town and avoid tourist traps/ other room mates
can show the place around and act as guides
- You can make nice encounters and perhaps visit other countries later on…
- It may enable you to rent a bigger flat since the more numerous you are the bigger the flat can be ( the more
numerous you are the cheaper it is).
- You always have someone to cheer you up when you feel low
- You can meet foreigners and share their culture
THE QUALITIES REQUIRED TO SHARE A FLAT ( voici quelques réponses supplémentaires

d’ici peu…et profitez en pour bien relire la fiche sur l’épreuve de bac et sur le commentaire de texte
Have a very nice weekend !!
Monday September 12th
-
We went on with our video
Problem 1 : Alessandro is unwilling to / is reluctant to share his flat with a French student : he pretends it will
not be easy to communicate. Perhaps he doesn’t want the new flat mate to be a boy (he would prefer to
interview a girl / he would rather interview a girl ) or perhaps he is prejudiced against French people
-
Problem 2 : the interviewer asks a very tricky question : what do you expect your life to be in about 5 years?
-
Others questions : do you like horse-riding? Music?
What is the ENGLISH used to say “engueulades”: bickering ( chamailleries): to bicker about something = to quarrel= to
argue= to have an argument = a row [RAU] / do you notice any mistake in what Tobias says? ( more cheaper)
Then you did a role play; I hope you enjoyed it!!
For tomorrow you must do exercise 1 and 2 ( asking questions) and be ready to say which candidate you would
choose/ whether you’d like to share the flat/ your partners’personalities
Tuesday September 12th
We corrected the PERSONALITY exercise you must know all these adjectives!!
Then you characterized each character of the video and justified your choice
You then concluded on your role plays

Travelling can be associated to pleasure ; we have fun ; it enables us to break away with the daily
routine
Travelling is a means to become more educated; the more you travel the more educated you are;
it allows us to lean about other cultures but also about ourselves
When we travel we learn about ourselves, it gives us the opportunity to test ourselves, we can
see if we are able to cope with difficult situation and to fend for ourselves
We become more self assured, we gain in confidence
Then you worked by groups to find a plan= outline for the following topic and to write an
introduction

+ TRAVELLING QUOTATIONS)
Tuesday October 3rd
For Marie and Thomas who were absent this is what we did:
-
We started with a few words about the poet. Wole Soyinka is a versatile author ( he is good at writing
several types of works : he is a novelist, a playwright, a poet, an essay writer...)
-
The characters who are involved in the story ( être impliqués) are a landlady and an African man ( we
suppose he is a man ; be careful the word “brunette’ can be used for men too). The scene must be set in
London judging from the colour of the box and the pillar box which remind us of London buses ( red).
-
The African man phoned to rent a flat from the landlady ( she lets her flat). He is a would be tenant. He
must have seen a small ad and that is why he called ( PROBABILITY ON THE PAST = MODAL + HAVE +
PAST PARTICIPLE → might have seen -may have seen -must have seen )
Then I asked you to highlight all the words said by the landlady and all the words said by the would be
tenant and to imply the ones which were not written but suggested. 2 of you acted the roles .I hope you
realised that some words are implicit in the poem and that silences are as important as words...it was a
difficult exercise!
Then you worked by groups on the detailed understanding ( worksheet in topics)
We only corrected the first question
THE ADVANTAGES OF THE FLAT
The price is reasonable/ the location is indifferent meaning he doesn’t care about it or that it is neither good
nor bad
The landlady lives off premises which is good because it prevents her ( empecher de) from snooping into her
tenant’s privacy/ spying on his intimacy
HOMEWORK : test on Thursday (writing an essay on travelling)
For Monday: finish all the worksheet ( elle se trouve dans TOPICS); be careful don’t forget the deadline
(date limite) for sending your story + illustrations is Monday 17th
THURSDAY TEST
Monday October 10th
Oral summary
Then we corrected the 1st part of your worksheet
BE CAREFUL A FEW OF YOU HADN’T DONE THEIR WORK PROPERLY!! a- Pick out the positive elements about the flat ( stanza 1)
Reasonable price/ the price suits him. Location indifferent: neither good not bad/ swore she lived off
promises: an advantage? Why? Not problem sometimes flat owners snoop into/ meddle in the
tenants ‘privacy
b- “Madam, I warned, I hate a wasted journey, I am African”.
Rephrase “I hate a wasted journey” → I hate to waste my time I wouldn’t like to come to your place
in vain/ he doesn’t want the journey to be in vain
Why does the narrator says that? →he must have been dismissed several times/ he may have had
the same experience before
Someone may have reproached him with being black
TO REPROACH WITH + VING / BLAME FOR + VING/ ACCUSE OF + VING
c- “Self-confession” line 4/ “caught I was” line 9. What do these words imply about the character’s
feelings?
As though he was guilty/ as though being black was a shame a crime/ seems to be apologizing for
being black !!
d- Look at stanza 1 again.
-Which words characterize the landlady? What do they show about her education and social
background? Why is it important?
Pressurized good breeding/ lipstick coated/ long gold rolled cigarette holder pipped = pip quick
noise=bip turned into a verb= peep peppier/ we have the feeling she must be a sophisticated
woman/ MUST belong to the upper class/ wealthy / a bit snobbish / well bred woman; all her
possessionS should make her a respectable lady
Social classes : working/ middle/ upper
-How does she react to the words “I’m African”? Why ?
She remains silent/ speechless; it reveals her disapproval she must be prejudiced against black
people but her education prevents her from saying anything impolite‘pressurized good breeding // a
pressure cooker/ she must be seething/ she doesn’t want to sound too impolite
-There are 2 other occurrences of “silence” in the text. Where? What do they reveal?
Line 15 and line 23 tries to simplify things and then tries to make out what he means his answer is too
enigmatic for her; line 15 the silence may also be his: he is amazed at her reaction : it was real !!!
Tuesday October 11th
We revised yesterday’s lesson thanks to a short exercise
Then we went on with our analysis of the poem
4-SYMBOLS ( objectif: interpréter le sens caché des mots)
a- In this poem emotions are conveyed through various senses
-Sight (la vue) : of course black is a colour which is often referred to in the poem ; what words are used to
define this colour?
West African sepia= dark reddish brown like the colour of very old photographs/ brunette=used for
European women/ peroxide blond mixes his description with the description generally used for women
confuses the woman/ raven black different part of his body to show you can’t limit a person to a few words/
you can’t categorize people
What other colour is also used? What does it symbolize? RED highlights his anger
-Smell ( l’odorat) : Pick up the words having to do with smell. What is the idea conveyed by these
words.Rancid breath line 12/ stench line11 emphasizes the negative connotation of the words she uses
-Hearing ( l’ouie): Pick up the words having to do with hearing. What is the idea conveyed by these words.
Clang/ thunderclap/ hard on the mouthpiece reinforces the way he perceives her words too hard to be
listened to=+ violence of her reaction
b- Why are some words in capital letters? Accentuates / stresses/ emphasizes the lady’s effort to
obtain clarification + reinforces the racism of her words
c- What does “Button B . Button A” symbolize? Buttons of the telephone sort of MCQ 2 choices to
describe someone shows the reductive image/ portrait she makes
d- Compare the 2 characters ‘ways of speaking.
He uses a much more sophisticated and precise language than she does and he outwits her (plus fort plus
futé)/ her sentences and words are simple whereas his sentences are complex
e- What happens at the end of the poem? What is the tone of the poem? What is the author’s aim?
Do you believe Wole Soyinka reaches his aim?
He offers her to see his bottom but his pretending to be polite / sort of insult in disguise and she hangs up
on him
The author wants to show the ridicule/ ridiculousness of her behaviour of her questions/ all the more
shocking as she is supposed to be educated
He pretends to be very naïve as if it was his own fault if his bottom was raven black ; he uses comic relief
after the tension of the conversation/ he ridicules the prejudice of some white people against black people:
a satire which denounces racial discrimination: dark people are not less intelligent than white people!!/ the
fact that a black man can outwit a white lady and make her look like a real fool shows the irony of judging
people by the colour of their skin
Homework/ Thursday learn the lesson and rephrase the words in the commentary
NEW week: TEST ON TELEPHONE CONVERSATION
Thursday October 13th

ne vous en êtes pas trop éloigné.

ThURSDAY November 10
We watched a video : how to detect a liar; this video is supposed to give us advice.it is quite funny because the
actors are not really good; everything is exaggerated (to see the video again go to TOPICS)
We can recognize a liar thanks to his body language:
Liars tend to touch their face and scratch their nose
Liars tend to blink a lot(clinger des yeux)/ they are unable to maintain eye contact
Their smile doesn’t seem honest / half smile/ creepy smile (a little frightening)
They tend to fold their arms and to put an object between them and you (defensive behaviour)
We can recognize a liar thanks to his language :
They tend to skip contractions and use full names ( unnatural language)
Silence makes them uncomfortable = uneasy= ill at ease
They tend to provide more details than necessary
They feel relieved when they change subjects
Then we discussed whether the advice given in the video is good and the remarks true or not.
We then went on with our text , an excerpt from MAN AND BOY BY TONY PARSONS
THE CHARACTERS WHO ARE ACTUALLY PRESENT
2 characters are actually present ( actually = in reality) : Harry and Siobhan: they are lovers= they are having an affair=
Siobhan is Harry’s mistress
THE CHARACTER WHO IS ONLY ALLUDED TO

Tuesday November 15th
We started with a recap
SIOBHAN :
Her reaction
Although she tries to be strong we understand she is crying = weeping ( her eyes are wet); she is upset = sorrowful
HER LIFE
she must be single MODAL
she is used to being dumped ; she is used to being with married men BE USED TO + VING= habit ≠ she used to V
(=autrefois)
she must have had similar experiences before MODAL + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE
she must have dated married men already PROBA SUR LE PASSE
QUOTE: “your wife is a lucky woman”? OPINION this sentence is ironic since his wife is cheated on but it’s not
ironic on the part of Siobhan; she is sincere; she envies her
SENTENCES IN ITALICS: why?
We enter the man’s thoughts (internal focalization) ; he is relieved / Siobhan doesn’t make a fuss ( un scandale)
He alludes to a famous movie Fatal Attraction ( a film with Michael Douglas who has a one night stand and she starts
stalking him and his family) She haunts him ; harasses him )
THE SEQUEL
As we know Siobhan left a message on his mobile we can imagine Harry ‘s wife must have found it and she may have
left him when she realized he’d been cheating on her
Then you had to complete the following sequel
1-Be logical! Fill in the gaps so as to obtain meaningful sentences.
Gina was _______PACKING________ her luggage when I _____GOT__________ home. She was pale-faced and dry-eyed, doing it
as quickly as she __COULD_________, taking only the bare essentials. As if she couldn't ___STAND= BEAR________ to be there
any more.
“Gina?” I _____SAID_______.
She turned and looked at me, and it was as if she _____WAS SEEING_________ me for the very first time. She seemed almost
giddy with contempt and anger. Especially anger. It scared the shit out of me. She had never ____LOOKED_________ at me like
that before. She looked so hostile. She turned again, picking something up from the little table by her side of the bed. An ashtray.
No, not an ashtray. We didn't have any ashtrays. She threw my_____MOBILE_________ at me. [...]
"l'll never _____FORGIVE________ you for this!”, she said in a threatening voice. "Never!”. She nodded at the phone. "Why don't
you listen to your messages?!!" she yelled.
I pressed the icon on the phone which showed a little ______ENVELOPPE ____________. Siobhan's voice came crackling through,
wry ( désabusée) and sleepy and completely out of place in our ___BEDROOM____________.
"It's always a bad sign if they go before you wake up ...but please don't feel ____SORRY= GUILTY__________about last night
...because l don't ...your wife is a lucky woman ...and I’m looking forward to working with you ...Bye Harry."
HOMEWORK: vote!! For the writing contest and do the following questions (2 3 4 )
2- What do we learn about Siobhan at the end of this excerpt that will make the situation particularly uncomfortable between
Siobhan and Harry when they see each other again? ⇒
3- “ She seemed almost giddy with contempt and anger” ( lines 4 and 5). Translate this sentence into French thanks to the
indications below:
to be giddy : when you feel unsteady, dizzy and think you are about to fall over and faint , usually because you are not well.
contempt : you are contemptuous of someone when you don’t like them or respect them at all. Contemptuous people are often
cruel and feel superior to you.
⇒
4- Now pick out ( relever) all the elements in this sequel of the text showing Gina’s “contempt and anger” :
her face :
her behaviour :
her words and tone :
Thursday November 17th
We did a few exercises (orally) on BE USED TO AND USED TO
BE USED TO + VING ≠ USED TO + V
1- What is the difference between these two sentences?
I used to smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day =I don’t smoke anymore = I no longer smoke
I am used to smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day = I am accustomed to smoking
2- To rephrase the following sentence would you use BE USED TO + VING or USED TO + V ?
He no longer drinks alcohol.=he used to drink
He doesn’t work in a bank anymore.=he used to work in
3- Complete using BE USED TO + VING
or USED TO + V
In those days we used to live in a very nice house by the sea.
He is nervous because he isn’t used to driving sports cars.
Don’t worry about me I am used to swimming in the sea.
She used to work in London but now she works near Paris.
Then we talked about the sequel to our text.
1- What do we learn about Siobhan at the end of this excerpt that will make the situation particularly uncomfortable
between Siobhan and Harry when they see each other again? ⇒
THEY WORK TOGETHER SO THEY MAY FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE = UNEASY = ILL AT EASE WHEN THEY SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN;
ALTHOUGH THIS SHOULD MAKE HER UNCOMFORTABLE SHE SAYS SHE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH HIM ,= she is eager
to work with him . SHE MAY BE IN LOVE WITH HIM AND SHE MAY MAKE A FUSS AFTER ALL; THE GUILTY MAN WILL TURN INTO A
VICTIM
EFFECT OF FIRST PERSON NARRATIVE = powerlessness (impuissance); Harry used to be the bad guy at the beginning of the text and we
feel he may become the victim...she may start harassing / stalking him.
2- - “ She seemed almost giddy with contempt and anger” ( lines 4 and 5). Translate this sentence into French thanks to
the indications below:
to be giddy : when you feel unsteady, dizzy and think you are about to fall over and faint , usually because you are not well.
Translate étourdi: avoir le vertige
contempt : you are contemptuous of someone when you don’t like them or respect them at all. Contemptuous people are often
cruel and feel superior to you.
Mépris/ contemptuous= méprisant
→ELLE SEMBLAIT COMME PRISE DE VERTIGE PAR MEPRIS ET DE COLERE
- Now pick out ( relever) all the elements in this sequel of the text showing Gina’s “contempt and anger” :
her face : PALE-FACED ( adj compose)/ DRY EYED/ LOOKED HOSTILE
behaviour :SHE HAD NEVER LOOKED AT ME LIKE THAT PICKED UP AND THREW MOBILE AT ME
throw at ≠throw to
her words and tone : YELLED /FORGIVE YOU FOR THIS ; this? = His unfaithfulness
ECRITURE D’UN DIALOGUE quelques remarques...
La ponctuation n’est pas la même ; on ouvre et ferme les guillemets à chaque parole
On dit : he said et pas said he…
In English you must open and close the inverted commas each time a character speaks and even each time the character’s
sentence is interrupted by a stage direction .
For example : “Let him go!” screamed the boy ,“Please let him go”.
b-Stage directions :
A stage direction is a means ( un moyen ) to give information about the character’s way of speaking.
•You can use for example different verbs : A CONNAITRE PAR COEUR POUR LUNDI
To say something ( to someone)
To tell someone something .
But also :
Acknowledge – add- admit – apologise – beg- complain – confess – cry – declare – deny –exclaim - groan / grumble- inquire–
mumble –order - promise – protest- remark – scream- stammer – whisper – wonder – yell …
Most of the time the verbs in the stage directions are in the past since most stories are told in the past.
Exercise 1 : Fill in the blanks with one of the following verbs in the past :
Agree- shout – whisper – insist – stammer- beg – cry
abcdefg-
“Oh , Billy” she __cried_________________,”what a terrible wound !”
“Get out” _____shouted_____________Mrs Marley frantically “there’s the door get out!”
“You’re a darling “ she ___whispered____________ to her son.
“Yes, you did” ___agreedSimon.
“But I do want to go!” _insisted___________John.
“Please don’t say anything” he begged____________________ . “ I’m so sorry”.
“Control m-myself!” She ___stammered______________” You’d better ask her to c-control herself!”

Hw: learn your voc (test) for Thursday : write the conversation between the 3 characters of the cartoon ( stage
directions!!! 180 words)
Tuesday November 22nd
You had a voc test.
Then we talked about your essay : should we always say the truth?
I wrote a few key words on the board and you had to remember the correction I gave you to try and give the
arguments of each part
I gave you some recommendations about writing an essay :
- Don’t give your opinion in your introduction
- No need to say “in a first part I will / in a second part I will” ( votre problématique sous forme de question se
suffit en elle même pour que nous comprenions votre plan)
- Find a transition
- Don’t give too down to earth examples ( vos exemples doivent être concrets mais pas trop “terre à terre”)
- Do a branching out in your conclusion
- Use ( and learn !!!) link words
Then we went on with tabloids and the gutter press ( gutter = caniveau )
I showed you several frontpages (=unes de journaux) and you had to guess and explain if they belong to the gutter
press or quality press
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GUTTER PRESS: what makes the difference ?
-big headlines = screaming headlines= catchy= eye-catching = colourful headlines (= titres)
Bold letters ,many photos
Unreliable texts stories based on people’s privacy vs serious stories (pollution etc) in the quality press
A lot of innuendoes= (insinuations)/ puns ex :pinickio for Nick Clegg who leads Britain with David Cameron
Tabloids concentrate on the sensational aspects of the news and use HYPERBOLES
Their language is much more colloquial
They tend to use first names, nicknames (pinickio) or diminutives (Harry for Prince Harry)
Testimonies are supposed to make the article sound more reliable but they often offer only one side of the story
pretend to be real
Homework : write the conversation between the 3 characters of the cartoon ( use stage directions in the past) 180
words
THURSDAY NOV 24TH
1- We did a recap about tabloids and the quality press:
QUALITY PRESS :Broadsheets are the larger, more serious papers that you have to fold to
read.
→The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, The Financial Times
TABLOIDS are often referred to as the “gutter press”, newspapers that tend to sensationalize
and emphasize or exaggerate sensational crime stories, gossip columns repeating scandalous and innuendoes
about the deeply personal lives of celebrities and sports stars, and other so-called "junk food news"
→The Sun, The Daily Mirror, The Daily Star, The Daily Mail, The Daily Express
Nowadays, some "quality" newspapers such as The Times and The Independent have adopted this small size,
easier to read than broadsheet newspapers when travelling to work on the train or by bus.
2- You worked by groups on 4 headlines
GRANDMA OF EIGHT INTERVIEWED IN SAN FRANCISCO
1.
PROFESSOR GIVES EVIDENCE IN HORSE SUIT
2.
POLICE FIND CRACK IN AUSTRALIA
3.
MILK DRINKERS ARE TURNING TO POWDER
Readers are often misled by the headlines of tabloids. Most of them are based on puns and innuendoes . Read the
following headlines and explain :
-
What the press article must be about ( might/may/must)
In which way we are misled ( double meaning)
Useful vocabulary
To trick someone into believing
To mislead someone
To insinuate
To suggest
Ex: grandma of 8 wins lottery
2 meanings:
-real meaning = a grandma who has 8 grandchildren
- but it insinuates she is 8 years old
Ex : professor gives evidence in law suit ( suit = a trial/ to sue someone) + a costume
As if he was wearing a horse costume; we have the feeling he is…
Ex: milk drinkers are turning to powder; in fact using powder milk but it seems that they are transforming/ turning into
power because of the milk
Ex: police finds crack in Australia
It is about drug but it also tricks us into thinking there is an enormous hole and that a natural disaster is bound to
happen; we are misled into believing something dangerous is going to happen
What do they use puns and innuendoes for?
TO AROUSE CURIOSITY ; we must read if we want to know the” truth”
To make their stories more exciting = thrilling
To draw the reader’s attention so that they may buy them
WHY ARE TABLOIDS DO POPULAR ?
12 million people read tabloids everyday in BRITAIN (60million inhabitants)
People want to live vicariously through the lives of celebrities (par procuration,)
It is a way to fantasize/ to escape
Need to be entertained ( enough news with other press or tv)
What are the methods used by their journalists?
They are USED TO SNOOPING INTO =INTRUDING ON =SPYING ON =MEDDLING WITH peoples’ privacy in order to
make a scoop!!Often they research methods are unethical (tap people’s phones/ stalk celebrities cf Diana Spencer/
HOMEWORK : for Monday learn the lesson and do your memo on the essay+ find out who were these famous liars :
Misha Defonseca, Richard Nixon, Victor Lutsig. DON’T COPY DOWN WIKIPEDIA!!!! Make your own sentences
Tuesday Novermber 28th
VOC a connaître : to pass oneself off as..= se faire passer pour./ to pretend/ to trick people into +VING/ a swindler= a
con man = un escroc/ to be accused of / to be forced to = to be compelled to = to be obliged to
RICHARD NIXON =president of the USA , a

cover up the break-in. But he had managed to obtain tapes of conversations of the Democrats.
Because of this scandal he was forced to resign in 1974= he was compelled to resign
VICTOR LUTSIG = a conman = a swindler / to con / to swindle
Is known as the man who sold the Eiffel tower twice; he tricked some businessmen into believing that the Eiffel tower
was about to be sold for scrap. He passed himself off as the director of a French Ministry (posts and telegraphs) and
that the deal had to remain secret: The state could no longer afford to pay for the upkeep (entretien ) of the Tower.
He even managed to sell the tower to a business and to obtain a bribe ( pot de vin)
He tried again a few months later but was arrested
MISHA DEFONSECA
Her real name is in fact Monique de Wael she is a Belgian writer; she wrote Misha A memoire of the Holocaust years
in 1979
She pretended she was Jewish and had survived the Holocaust by living with a pack of wolves .She tricked people into
believing she had killed a German soldier. She wrote a book which was a best seller and translated in 18 languages and
adapted into a film
In fact her father had collaborated with the gestapo.
It was a hoax./ The rony is that she sued her editor and made a lot of money before the hoax was discovered
WHY DID THESE PEOPLE LIE?
Nixon : to be reelected : lied because of his thirst for power (soif de pouvoir)
Lutsig : in order to make money: was a swindler
Misha : she fantasized a heroic life and ended up believing in her lie perhaps to make up for (compenser )the fact her
father was a traitor

This man pretends he is pilot although = even if he never went to flight school
He passes himself off as a doctor and yet he didn’t go to a medical school
He passes himself off as a lawyer despite the fact he never went to law school
Despite the policeman he goes on swindling people ( despite + nom)

so that his father may be proud of him (for+ nom/ in order to / so as to / to +V/ so that / in order that+S+V)
In fact he is still in high school
He is charged with/ he is accused of stealing more than 1 million dollars
He owes more than 1 million dollars
He is accused of makin fake checks
Then we did a team work and you had to find the English equivalents in the following summary :
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN BY STEVEN SPIELBERG : the amazing true story of the most extraordinary
liar !
The movie is based on Frank Abagnale Jr.'s book about his experiences as a con man back in the 1960s. When Frank (Leonardo
DiCaprio) is about 16, his parents split up after his father (Christopher Walken) gets into deep financial trouble. One day at school,
Frank Jr. attempts to pass himself off as a substitute teacher, and easily makes the subterfuge work. His small-scale success gives
Frank some ideas, and he soon discovers bigger and more profitable ways of hoaxing others, passing himself off as an airline pilot,
a doctor, and an attorney. Along the way, Frank learns how to become a master forger, and uses his talent and charm to pass over
2.5 million dollars in phony checks. Frank's increasingly audacious work soon attracts the attention of Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks),
an FBI agent who is determined to put Frank behind bars. Frank seems to enjoy being pursued by Carl, and even goes so far as to
call Carl on the phone to chat every once in a while. While posing as a doctor, Frank falls in love with Brenda Strong (Amy Adams),
a sweet girl working as a candy striper. When Frank asks Brenda to marry him, he decides to assume a new identity to impress her
father, Roger (Martin Sheen) - who happens to be the District Attorney of New Orleans, LA. Catch Me If You Can was based on the
autobiography of the real Frank W. Abagnale Jr., who has a cameo in the film and today works on the side of the law as a top
consultant on preventing forgery and designing secure checking systems.
1-Read this summary of the film and find out the word corresponding to the following definitions then give the French
translation of the word you found:CORRECTION
-
Someone who tries to get money from people by tricking them : conman
To break up : split up
To try to : to attempt to
A lawyer: an attorney
Someone who reproduces a signature , a handwriting for fraudulent purposes : a forger
Fake/ false : phony
To imprison : to put behind bars
A woman who is a volunteer worker in a hospital ( from the resemblance of the volunteer’s red and white striped uniform)
: candy striper
Avoiding : preventing
HOMEWORK : translate your part of this summary for this time (Manon= from “Frank’s
increasingly …to …in a while”)+ do exercises 1-2-3-4 of the worksheet WRITING A PRESS ARTICLE
(pour Manon; si on ne t’a pas donné le doc, envoie moi un mail)
Thursday December 1st
We corrected the translations and worked on the Passive forms
1-Read the following headlines :
2- Turn each headline into a full sentence :
ex : Woman injured in Central Park
= A woman was injured in Central Park
7 women have been killed
A husband is / was suspected in a murder case
A young woman was shot dead
A general practitioner was discovered
3- In each headline say who performs the action (qui fait l’action), who receives the action (qui subit l’action).
In 1 perhaps a hoodlum/ 2 perhaps a serial killer/ the police/ a killer who ?/ a passer by who?
3- Why do you think journalists and reporters often use the passive ?
Several reasons :
Because they don’t know the “agent” / to remain mysterious/ because the person who performed the action
is not important/ because it is useless or obvious
LE PASSIF = BE + PARTICIPE PASSE (by someone…)
5- Highlight the verbs in the passive in the following press article and for each verb say what the tense is(to know the
tense of a verb in the passive voice, you just have to look at the tense of “be”):
A suspected murderer was arrested yesterday in New York. The 29-year-old man who is said to be from Boston is
being questioned by detectives about « serious crimes » in New Hampshire, Vermont and New Jersey. After being
chased for 2 days ,he was finally arrested in a small Motel near Kennedy AIRPORT. One of his victims, Mrs Janet Brown
- who was taken to Roosevelt Hospital last Tuesday - is still being given treatment.
Mrs Brown was walking back home when she was assaulted. « I was lucky » she said. « He must have heard a noise
and suddenly ran away leaving me on the sidewalk ».
Mrs Brown missed death by a hairbreadth and she confessed she would never forget that chilling night.
6-Translate :
Be careful all these sentences are in the past but some of them are in the passive while the others are in the active
voice. Don’t “stick to” the French!!!
Il est arrivé hier.
Elle est allée au cinéma avec nous la semaine dernière.
Il a été tué pendant la guerre.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU !! have a very nice holiday
Tuesday January 3rd
Happy new year!!
We corrected the beginning of your test about the text QUEEN and talked about the KU KLUX KLAN ; we discussed
several photos that I showed you
For the pupils who were absent this is what we wrote
The text takes place in the 19th century in the US since we can read “plantation” “klan” masked men” “masters”
The Kkk was created after the Civil War in 1866
The Civil was ( 1861-1865) took place in the US between the north and the south ( the south was in favour of slavery
because black slaves were a cheap labour force in cotton fields); Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in 1863 so some
white people feared = dreaded that black people might get the same rights as white people and founded the kkk a
racist organization in favour of white supremacy. After the abolition of slavery started the JIM CROW LAWS; these
laws were very hypocritical since they claimed that black people were separate but equal; it was the beginning of
segregation : black and white people were separated in all public places until 1964 (Civil Rights act which abolished
segregation) and black people only obtained the right to vote in 1965; we talked about Rosa Parks of course and her
act of rebellion when she refused to give up her seat to a white person
The KKK still exists today ( about 8000 members) but was above all very active in the 1920’s ( 6 million members);
their number increases each time there is a crisis; they hate homosexuals Jews communists…they are a hate group
They used to lynch people and organize necktie parties (hanging black people); they wear white robes and hoods not
to be recognized but above all so as to appear like the ghosts of the confederates ( confederate states= in favour of
slavery) ; their activity is based on fear: they like to frighten = scare other people (attention AFRAID n’est pas un
verbe!!)
Abner is ØQueen and Davis’ s son; Mrs Benson must be the landlady for whom Queen works ( utiliser les modaux
quand on n’est pas sûr)
She ran fast to Davis in order to warn him; she wanted him to run away (utiliser le preterit; warn ≠prevent)
Davis must be a courageous man but he is reluctant to run away = unwilling
Will not = expresses his will ( volonté) : he is determined not to run away anymore and to face the Klan
He is fed up with = tired of running away and is fatalistic ( accepts his fate)
Next time we’ll go on with this correction ; don’t forget to do questions 1 and 2 about the TIME INTERVIEW (Jim
Jones)
Thursday January 5th
I wrote key words on the board and you had to tell as much info about the KKK and Jim Crow laws as possible
Then we watched a video on the KKK and talked about it and we went on with the correction of your test
Mrs Benson’s manipulation
She tricked Queen into believing she could trust her ; she made her believe that she was a friend
She pretended to help Queen by telling her she should warn her husband but in fact it was a means to know where
Davis was hiding
WHERE IN THE CLUES DO WE HAVE CLUES THAT SHE WAS IN FACT DECEIVING QUEEN (“unaware”; “for she
believed”…)
Because of Mrs Benson the KKK could find Davis and in the meantime (meanwhile) she locked up Abner to use him as
a hostage; in fact if Davis surrenders ( = se rendre) Abner will stay alive ; it is blackmail
CORRECTION TRADUCTION
2ème sujet faire le lien avec KKK : 1st amendment = freedom of expression “should” = devrait
TIME INTERVIEW
We corrected the questions
Here is the original text :
AN INTERVIEW BY TIME MAGAZINE ABOUT JIM JONES AND THE PEOPLES TEMPLE
Tim Reiterman is a journalist who was present when Congressman Ryan was shot by Jim Jones ‘s men. Tim was
himself wounded and spent the next four years researching about the tragedy.
TIME senior reporter Andrea Sachs spoke to Reiterman .
TIME: Was Jim Jones a bad person from the beginning, or did he grow into one?
Good and evil coexisted in Jim Jones throughout his life. I really do believe, having gone back to his birthplace in
Indiana and tracing his life, that the seeds of the madness that the world saw in November 1978 were there from
his earliest years. He was somewhat neglected as a child. He was part of an unconventional family where his
mother was the breadwinner and his father was a brooding man whose work life was cut short by mustard gas
scarring from World War I on his lungs. Jones sought out acceptance and a sense of family through churches, but at
the same time he had a tremendous need for power and control. He would conduct little church services up in the
loft of a barn and lock his playmates in there; later he used a firearm to try to control his best friend.
TIME: But throughout his whole life, Jones found followers. How?
Even as a kid, he was a really engaging speaker and character. He would go out and play minister. He would
entertain people. He had a way of spinning words and a power to his voice. He drew people who were basically
religious for the most part in the early years. They were hard-working people, and they were drawn initially to a
rare thing in the Midwest, an integrated Christian congregation. At the same time, however, he was breaking down
the individual family units within the Temple, and he was getting a tighter and tighter grip on his followers, just as
he locked up his playmates in a barn in Indiana. He found ways to take control of and isolate his members from
their families and from the outside. One of the things that he did was press them to give up their belongings, sign
over their houses in some cases, sign over custody of their children.
TIME: What was your impression of Jones when you interviewed him in Guyana?
He did not appear to be well. His skin appeared sallow. His eyes were almost gelatinous. His handshake seemed
rather weak, and when he spoke there was a constant undercurrent of paranoia. He was clearly viewing himself as a
martyr .
TIME: What happened when you went to your plane?
During that boarding procedure, a Temple tractor and trailer full of gunmen raced towards us. They jumped out and
they started firing. That's when I was hit by gunfire as I was trying to take cover behind one of the plane wheels.
Fortunately I was only hit in the arm a couple of times and was able to jump up and sprint to the jungle and take
cover. When I came out a few moments later, I saw that the Congressman had been killed and that three of the
newsmen had been killed.
TIME: Do you think that the 900 deaths that immediately followed were suicides, or were they murders?
I believe that this was a mass murder. First of all, there were over 200 children who could not have formed the
intent to commit suicide. Second, Jim Jones had isolated his people and conditioned them through suicide
rehearsals and mock sieges to accept death. Third, he orchestrated the events on that final day so that the outcome
was never in doubt. He had gunmen go shoot the Congressman. Then he turned around to his followers, once he
got news the Congressman was dead, and announced it. By having the children die first, he sealed the fate of their
parents and other elders, because no one would have any reason to live. Many appeared to have been injected with
poison.
TIME: What happened to Jones himself?
Jim Jones was found with a single bullet wound to the head, pretty much a contact wound. I believe that he either
shot himself or was shot by a close aide as he had planned.
TIME: Do you think about Jonestown now?
I think about it every day. I think about the people, the 900 people I saw who were young and old and vibrant and
talented and performing on that first evening when I met them. I don't replay those events every day in full, but
they cross my mind. When you're part of something like the events in Jonestown, they become part of you.

HOMEWORK : finir worksheet ( the characterisitics of a sect + translation ) + faire memo
MONDAY JANUARY 9TH
We completed the grid and the information about Jim Jones
The characteristics of a sect
they share the same beliefs
they obey strict rules
they follow a charismatic leader who is often very authoritative and who compels his followers to follow strict rules
they tend to live isolated from the rest of the world; they often give up their family and social status; they don’t want
to stay in touch with the normal world
they are suspicious to outsiders who become their enemies
sect members find it very difficult to leave the sect
the members are brainwashed and manipulated and regard their leader as a sort of god
they must be obedient
the members have no privacy
people who join a sect are often gullible and vulnerable they see the sect as a surrogate family
for tomorrow revise all you know about Jim Jones
Tuesday January 10th
We talked about the reason why sect followers are suspicious to outsiders; because they are brainwashed and
talked into thinking that the outside word is dangerous; that the sect is the safest place to be, that the leader is
here to help them; this enables the leader to obtain their belongings and rule on the sect without their family being
able to help them; they are isolated from the rest of the world and become paranoid
We then corrected the translation you had to do for today and did our QUIZ; you had to find the questions
corresponding to the answers given on the photocopy and test your friends: you were good at it!! Well done ! ☺
Hw: get ready to introduce the Time interview and give a plan for your analysis in case you had to take the ‘second
groupe d’épreuve”
Thursday 12th
We practiced for the oral and I gave you the plan for your oral exam in case you had to take the “second groupe du
bac”
We then watched a video clip by Genesis and you had to react and give your opinion VIDEO IN TOPICS
Jesus he know me by Genesis lead singer Phil Collins a British band
The purpose is to denounce = expose = criticize televangelists = preachers on TV
Clue : is delivering a sermon / is preaching from a pulpit
What elements show this video is a parody?
The preacher looks ridiculous = grotesque = ludicrous: wearing an orange suit and a wig/ making faces/looks like a
clown
You then had to complete the lyrics
For Monday read the lyrics and translate this verse :
“Won’t find me practising what I’m
preaching
Won’t find me making no sacrifice
But I can get you a pocketful of miracles
If you promise to be good, try to be nice
God will take good care of you
Just do as I say, don’t do as I do”
Have a nice weekend
Tuesday January 17
We did a recap of what we had said about televangelists and insisted on the fact they are greedy = they are
interested in money
We worked on the colloquial = substandard language used in the song
For example “cos” is “because” / wanna is “want to” / gonna be is “is going to be”/ she don’t know is “she doesn’t
know”/ won’t find me making no sacrifice is “won’t find me making any sacrifice ( you can’t have a double
negation)
This language is used to show that American TV viewers who watch this sort of programmes on TV are not educated
and gullible/ they are easily-influenced
This song is a parody of televangelism but it also targets (cibler) American viewers
Then we listened to the beginning of a video denouncing televangelists and completed this script :
Televangelists have a long history of exploiting the vulnerable and less fortunate of our society. Spewing their babble
and foolishness they steal billions of dollars from people who can least afford it. What does it say about our country
when these shameless hucksters are permitted to sell their superstitious nonsense on TV?The following clips illustrate
how these dangerous charlatans prey upon the naïve and the gullible
CORRECTION OF EXERCISE 1 VOC A CONNAITRE
Exploiting = using/ taking advantage of
Vulnerable = weak = easily-influenced
Foolisheness = nonsense = silliness
Billions = one thousand million
Afford = to be able to pay for
Shameless =unscrupulous
Nonsense = foolishness
Charlatans = conmen
Gullible = naïve
HW : for Thursday do exercise 5 on the worksheet about the song (satire) and prove that the song is a satire +
translate : the purpose of satire from “if we see someone” to “scorn for the group”
Thursday 19th
We worked on SATIRE and translated the paragraph :
CORRECTION
TRADUCTION :
WHY CAN WE SAY THE SONG IS A SATIRE ?
The singer regards televangelists are immoral characters (self-centered greedy and hypocritical); his aim is to show tv
viewers that their behaviour is immoral; he also wants the viewers to change the way they regard televangelists : they
are not respectable people/ he wants them to be less gullible
He talks them into reforming/ changing their ways
He uses exaggeration ; not all of them cheat on their wives!! Not all of them have limousines but most of them are
more interested in money than in people ‘s well-being
We then saw which words were pejorative in the beginning of the video
Televangelists have a long history of exploiting the vulnerable and less fortunate of our society. Spewing their babble
and foolishness they steal billions of dollars from people who can least afford it. What does it say about our country
when these shameless hucksters are permitted to sell their superstitious nonsense on TV?The following clips illustrate
how these dangerous charlatans prey upon the naïve and the gullible
We guessed what these pejorative words mean : spewing their babble = vomiting their confused language /
hucksters = conmen / people who force you to buy
Prey upon= a prey =uneproie/ to threaten
We watched the video and started talking about it video in topics
The televangelist is called Peter Popoff / he makes people believe he can heal them by selling them miracle water;
he is a swindler!!!
HW: revise asking question TEST ON MONDAY (CE en salle normale)
For Tuesday; read carefully the commentary of the song and memorize the new words and information to be able
to comment orally on the song
Tuesday January 24th
We watched the ends of the 2 videos (song + report) again to compare them
Here is what we can say
Points in common
differences
Both show preachers
In the report the audience are interested in money and
Both preachers pretend to heal people of serious
want to be healed whereas in the song they don’t say
illnesses
they want to be healed but we can see they are
Both pretend they can speak with God
interested in money in the video clip (many bank notes
Both preachers are interested in money
are flying in the air)
Both preachers make people believe they can trust
them
In the video clip the number of the screen is the amount
of money the televangelist made while in the report the
money is the money that the audience made thanks to
the supposed miracle water (Popoff tricks them into
believing that if they buy his miracle water they will be
in good health and rich)
Then I gave you the following prompts (= amorces) and you had to get ready to comment on the song orally :

Thursday January 26th
You commented on the song and it was better this time !!
Then I explained to you what the test will consist in on Tuesday 7th ( voir programme de revision distribué ce jour)
We started talking about Scientology
It was found by Hubbard and based on a “zany mythology” = crazy
In fact ,he alludesto the Xenu mythology.According to scientologists , 75 millions years ago, Xenu ruled the Galactic Federation, an organization
of 76 planets .The planets were overpopulated so Xenu gathered large numbers of people, killed them, froze their souls ( = “thetans” in the
scientologist lingo)), and transported the frozen thetans to Earth. The thetans were left near volcanoes, which were destroyed in nuclear
explosions.Members of the Galactic Federation eventually rebelled against Xenu and imprisoned him on a planet that today is a desert. The
thetans who were captured and exploded on Earth are now body thetans. Each human has his or her own thetan, which Scientologists purify
through auditing (a process in which members are purified of their “engrams”= in scientologist lingo , their bad influences).
We then started to rebuild the chronology of events and you have to finish it for Monday
At first Pcooper wrote a press article but she received a death threat then she wrote a book but the church of
Scientology sued her published
Then….TO BE CONTINUED
Hw: finir la chronologie des évènements du texte I was stalked = harassed by scientologists

As only very few of you were present we didn’t go on with the text ; we worked on this document: (useful for your
final task)
SECT RECRUITMENT / WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE JOIN SECTS ?correction
1-Read this document on the ways sects recruit followers .Find out in the text words or phrases meaning : de tous
les milieu sociaux= from all walks of life/une rupture=break up/plus de chances d’être= are likely to be/ manque
d’assurance=assertiveness/crédulité=gullibility/tromperie=deception/ rassemblement dans une église=church
gathering/la volonté du groupe= the will of the group
2- What is the point in common between all the people who are recruited? What are the main locations where
sects recruit would- be followers ?
3- Using ideas from the text complete the following promptsCORRECTION
People who join sects tend to be unassertive…./ they tend to feel marginalized…./ they tend to believe everyone is
good…/they tend to need to belong to a group…./they tend to lack self confidence…
4- WARNING / SECTS ARE DANGEROUS; Create a short leaflet to warn people against the dangers of sects and to
prevent people from joining them.
Useful words : you should/shouldn’t/ ought to/ ought not to/ had better/ had better not…/Be careful not to/ beware of
(attention à ) / don’t+BV/ make sure you…(assurez vous que…)
You may have an idea of a "sect recruit" as an obviously troubled young person, maybe "mentally ill," easily
exploited by unethical sect leaders. But studies show that people who join sects have only a slightly higher
incidence of psychiatric disorders than the general population.
Sect members come from all walks of life, all age groups and all personality types. However, one common
thread among most cult recruits is heightened stress: Research indicates that a majority of people who end up
joining a sect were recruited during a particularly stressful period. This could be the stress associated with
adolescence, leaving home for the first time, a bad breakup, losing a job or the death of a loved one. People
undergoing significant stress can be more susceptible when a person or group claims to have the answer to all
of their problems. Michael Langone, Ph.D., a psychologist who specializes in sects, also identifies some
psychological traits that can make a person more likely to be successfully recruited, including:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
dependency - an intense desire to belong, stemming from a lack of self-confidence
unassertiveness - a reluctance to say no or question authority
gullibility - a tendency to believe what someone says without really thinking about it
low tolerance for uncertainty - a need to have any question answered immediately in black-and-white
terms
disillusionment with the status quo - a feeling of marginalization within one's own culture and a desire
to see that culture change
naive idealism - a blind belief that everyone is good
desire for spiritual meaning - a need to believe that life has a "higher purpose"
Sect recruiters hang out in places where you might find people in a period of extreme stress or possessing the
above personality traits - which is anywhere. Some particularly fruitful recruiting locations might include
college campuses, self-help and support groups, seminars related to spirituality or social change and the
unemployment office. The main methods of sect recruitment revolve around deception and manipulation.
They may tell people at a church gathering that their group meets once a week to brainstorm ways to raise
money for a new homeless shelter. They might invite a high school student to a talk about how public service
can enhance a college application. Recruiters identity the specific needs or desires of their targets .Once a
person attends one meeting or lecture, he's invited to another, and another and another. He's welcomed into
the sect family and invited to commit himself to the group. From day one, it's a process of manipulation and
deception. And for those who stay on, the recruiting process culminates in the submission of their own
personalities to the "will of the group."

THURSDAY 2ND
We worked on the text WRITER STALKED ....
First Mrs Cooper wrote a press article about scientology. As a consequence she received a death threat. Despite = in
spite of this threat she wrote a book but her publisher was forced to issue an apology and a recall because the
Church of scientology sued him. Then things went worse. Her phone was tapped, her cousin was assaulted =
attacked = mugged but luckily the gun jammed; her neighbours received anonymous letters accusing her of being a
prostitute and beating her children. She was charged with sending a bomb threat. In fact she was framed up: a man
had stolen some papers to put her fingerprints on the bomb threat. Therefore she was accused by mistake. As a
result her fiancée left her ,she lost weight and even thought of committing suicide. In the end she proved her
innocence by accepting to be injected with a truth serum.
The methods of scientologists are thus very violent ; this operation was called “operation freakout” to freak out =
to terrify or be terrified ; this is part of the “fair game doctrine” ; we saw a video showing this.
For next time you must be ready to correct the first exercise of the test and the translation and complete this
commentary

This text is an article which was published in Radar Magazine _____June 22 2007. It ___________with the story of an American investigative
journalist named Paulette Cooper __________life was almost ruined by scientologists. The church of Scientology was founded by
th
______________ in 1952 and is regarded as one of the most controversial sects to have arisen in the 20 century. It has often been accused of
_______________the people who dared to resist or criticize its members. In our analysis of the text we will answer 3 questions:
Part 1 of our analysis : why does the author of this article talk about “a zany mythology and made-up lingo” line 1?
In the first paragraph of this text the author refers to their “zany mythology” and “made-up lingo”. “Zany” means __________ and “made –up
lingo” refers to the specific language invented by scientologists.
Scientology is extremely popular thanks to celebrities such as _________________or ________________. It is a very powerful sect as the story
of Paulette Cooper shows. Her battle against scientology ______________17 years from 1968, the year ___________she wrote her first article
about scientology in a ___________magazine to 1985 , the year ____________she stopped ___________ about this sect.
Part 2 of our analysis : the methods of this sect?what is “operation Freak out”
To “freak out “ means __________________. It sums up what this operation consisted in (lines 27/28) : to use all sorts of methods to make Mrs
Cooper end in ______________or in a ___________________.
rd
______________she had received death threats Mrs Cooper decided to write a book about their methods. In the 3 paragraph we learn that her
publisher was forced to _______________________________________because the Church of Scientology __________him for libel( poursuivre
en diffamation). Then they ___________her phone and __________her cousin with a gun but luckily the gun didn’t ________( it ____________).
They went on _____________her by sending letters to her __________________in which they accused her of
____________________________________________.
Later on, she was charged with “mailing an anonymous bomb threat to a Scientology spokesman” (line 16). The author of the article explains
that they managed to have her ________________on the bomb threat thanks to a man who had succeeded in _________ a paper from her flat
.The only way for her to ______________her ________________was to be injected with a _______________ and show she was only saying the
_____________. Without the help of a ________________ and of the _____she might ________________________to prison.(paragraphs 5 and
6)
This article explains that threatening their “enemies” is part of the doctrine taught to the sect’s followers it is called : _____________________.
Because of all these ______________, Mrs Cooper lost ________________ and ____________ (line20); she even thought of
_____________________suicide.
Part 3 of our analysis : is Mrs Cooper regretful?(last paragraph of the text)
If she was/were in the same situation, Mrs __________________________ because she still believes ____________________________
Conclusion : Her story shows to which extent the Church of Scientology can destroy people’s lives : it can ruin the life of the people who fight
against this sect as well as the lives of the people who decide to follow it.
OPINION AND BRANCHING:
A few of the threatening methods: “disconnection” (= the fact of isolation its members from their relatives)/”hard sell” ( = the fact of forcing
people to sign contracts or to adopt their beliefs in particular by blackmailing them) “infiltration” ( = the fact of tapping the phones of people to
use information against them) “personality tests “ (to recruit people ,they show them they need to belong to the sect to make their life better)
/ ruining the lives of “suppressive people” ( a suppressive person = a term used to refer to anti social personalities that they must condemn)
etc…

CORRECTION DU COMMENTAIRE A REVOIR POUR LE DEVOIR DE MARDI voc en jaune à connaitre
WRITER : I WAS STALKED BY SCIENTOLOGISTS AIDE AU COMMENTAIRE SECOND GROUPE ET CORRECTION
DEVOIR
This text is an article which was published in Radar Magazine __ON___June 22nd 2007. It
_DEALS__________with the story of an American investigative journalist named Paulette Cooper __WHOSE
________life was almost ruined by scientologists. The church of Scientology was founded by
__HUBBARD____________ in 1952 and is regarded as one of the most controversial sects to have arisen in
the 20th century. It has often been accused of ___THREATENING___=STALKING= HARASSING the people who
dared to resist or criticize its members. In our analysis of the text we will answer 3 questions:
Part 1 of our analysis : why does the author of this article talk about “a zany mythology and made-up
lingo” line 1?
In the first paragraph of this text the author refers to their “zany mythology” and “made-up lingo”. “Zany”
means __crazy=mad=insane=”foolish” (stupid)________ and “made –up lingo” (made up = invented )refers
to the specific language invented by scientologists.
In fact ,he alludes to the Xenu mythology.According to scientologists , 75 million years ago, Xenu ruled the
Galactic Federation, an organization of 76 planets .The planets were overpopulated so Xenu gathered large
numbers of people, killed them, froze their souls ( = “thetans” in the scientologist lingo)), and transported
the frozen thetans to Earth. The thetans were left near volcanoes, which were destroyed in nuclear
explosions.Members of the Galactic Federation eventually*=finally rebelled against Xenu and imprisoned
him on a planet that today is a desert. The thetans who were captured and exploded on Earth are now body
thetans. Each human has his or her own thetan, which Scientologists purify through auditing (a process in
which members are purified of their “engrams”= in scientologist lingo , their bad influences).
Scientology is extremely popular thanks to celebrities such as _______Travolta__________or
_____Cruise___________. It is a very powerful sect as the story of Paulette Cooper shows. Her battle against
scientology _lasted_____________17 years from 1968, the year _when__(l’année où se traduit the year
when)________she wrote her first article about scientology in a __British _________magazine to 1985 , the
year ___when_________she stopped _______talking_/writing_(arrêter de = stop +VING)__ about this sect.
Part 2 of our analysis : the methods of this sect?what is “operation Freak out”
To “freak out “ means __to terrify/to be terrified________________. It sums up what this operation
consisted in (lines 27/28) : to use all sorts of methods to make Mrs Cooper end in ____cell_=jail_________or
in a ____mental ward____= psychiatric SAI hospital___________.
____although_____( despite the fact she received)_____she had received death threats Mrs Cooper decided
to write a book about their methods. In the 3rd paragraph we learn that her publisher was forced to ___issue
an apology____________________________________because the Church of Scientology
__sued________him for libel( poursuivre en diffamation). Then they _tapped__________her phone and
_attacked =mugged= assaulted__ _______her cousin with a gun but luckily the gun didn’t fire/work
________( it ____jammed________). They went on __harassing___________her by sending letters to her
_____neighbours_____________in which they accused her of _being a prostitute and molesting a
child___________________________________________.
Later on, she was charged with “mailing an anonymous bomb threat to a Scientology spokesman” (line 16).
The author of the article explains that they managed to have her ____fingerprints____________on the
bomb threat thanks to a man who had succeeded in _stealing________ a paper from her flat .The only way
for her to ___prove___________her __honesty______________was to be injected with a ____truth
serum___________ and show she was only saying the ___truth____(et pas “true” qui veut dire
“vrai”)______. Without the help of a ____Scottish professor____________ and of the FBI_____she might
__HAVE BEEN SENT___(probabilité sur le passé A CONNAITRE)___________________to prison.(paragraphs
5 and 6)
This article explains that threatening their “enemies” is part of the doctrine taught to the sect’s followers it
is called : __fair game___________________.
Because of all these __threats____________, Mrs Cooper lost _weight_______________ and ____her
boyfriend________ (line20); she even thought of ______committing_______________suicide.
Part 3 of our analysis : is Mrs Cooper regretful?(last paragraph of the text)
If she was/were in the same situation, Mrs _COOPER WOULD DO IT ALL OVER
AGAIN_________________________ because she still believes _____________IN HER STRUGGLE
Conclusion : Her story shows to which extent the Church of Scientology can destroy people’s lives : it can
ruin the life of the people who fight against this sect as well as the lives of the people who decide to follow
it.
OPINION AND BRANCHING: read and remember !!!! CES METHODES VOUS SERONT UTILES POUR LA
TACHE FINALE DE MARDI
A few of the threatening methods: “disconnection” (= the fact of isolation its members from their
relatives)/”hard sell” ( = the fact of forcing people to sign contracts or to adopt their beliefs in particular by
blackmailing them) “infiltration” ( = the fact of tapping the phones of people to use information against
them) “personality tests “ (to recruit people ,they show them they need to belong to the sect to make their
life better) / ruining the lives of “suppressive people” ( a suppressive person = a term used to refer to anti
social personalities that they must condemn) etc…
TALK ABOUT THE AMERICAN PHENOMENON OF TELEVANGELISM : this is not religion but business!!!

Tuesday 14th HAPPY VALENTINE !!!!
Test
Thursday February 16th
Today we corrected the exercise on tenses and I answered your questions about the mock exam
Then the class was divided into two groups ; each group received a document and had to discuss it before explaining
what they thought it might be to the other group; the aim was to guess what our new topic( after the holiday) will be ;
I didn’t give the solution as you have for Monday March 12th to compare both documents , say what they are and
explain the symbols of the cartoon before saying the topic they both illustrate ( in a few lines only using FIRST
IMPRESSIONS : it seems/ it is as though/ we are under the impression etc…); we will do this orally after the holiday and
for Tuesday 13th you have a reading comprehension to do on a copy
