Nouvelle étape dans la longue histoire qu’entretiennent la mer et les montres. À travers les siècles, les métiers de la mer et de l’horlogerie ont été
liés de diverses manières. Chez GIRARD-PERREGAUX, c’est depuis de
nombreuses années que nous célébrons l’invention du chronomètre de
Marine par John Harrison au 18e siècle.
Dans les faits, la marine de Sa Majesté était confrontée – en sus de ceux
représentés par ses plus puissantes et plus dangereuses rivales – aux périls
résultant de l’inaptitude à déterminer correctement sa propre position en
mer. Le problème de la latitude avait été résolu depuis des siècles par l’observation des étoiles. Cependant, la longitude se révéla, tout compte fait,
une “bête” autrement plus difficile à apprivoiser. C’est la raison pour laquelle, en 1714, le parlement britannique lança un concours doté d’un magnifique prix de 20 000 livres (équivalant aujourd’hui à plusieurs millions)
pour celui qui aurait le génie d’apporter, avec une exactitude raisonnable,
une solution pratique et réalisable au problème de la détermination de la
longitude d’un vaisseau en mer.
Un horloger, qui s’appelait John Harrison, remporta la palme avec une solution basée sur des chronomètres de précision, reléguant au second plan,
dans cette entreprise, scientifiques et astronomes.
Le pacte entre la marine et l’horlogerie était scellé.
La patience, les talents, le doigté que l’on associe à la Haute Horlogerie,
un domaine où excelle GIRARD-PERREGAUX, sont des proprié-

Seafaring and watchmaking have enjoyed a long, shared history.
For many years now, GIRARD-PERREGAUX has been celebrating John
Harrison’s invention of the maritime chronometer in the 18th century.
The inability to determine a ship’s exact position at sea posed major problems
not only for the British Navy but for all its rivals as well. For centuries, sailors
had been able to calculate their latitudinal position at sea by observing the
stars. Longitude, however, proved to be a much thornier dilemma. That was
why the British Parliament launched a contest in 1714 with a grand prize
of £20,000 (the equivalent of several million today) for the ingenious person
who could come up with a practical, workable solution to the problem of determining a ship’s longitude at sea with reasonable accuracy.
The winner of this contest, with a solution based on accurate chronometers, was
watchmaker John Harrison, who won out over scientists and astronomers.
The partnership between seafaring and watches had been established.
On October 5, 2004, GIRARD-PERREGAUX signed a sponsorship agreement in Valencia, Spain, with BMW ORACLE Racing, the Challenger of
Record*, for the 32nd America’s Cup.
By joining forces with Larry Ellison, Chris Dickson and their team and becoming involved in one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious sporting
events, the Manufactory has confirmed its passion to take up challenges.
What is more, GIRARD-PERREGAUX and BMW ORACLE Racing

Le premier fruit de la collaboration entre GIRARD-PERREGAUX et
BMW ORACLE Racing est le modèle SEA HAWK II - USA 71, produit
en édition limitée à 500 unités. Ce modèle porte le nom de la première des
deux coques que le Team BMW ORACLE Racing a mis au point pour
relever le défi de la 31e Coupe de l’America, qui s’est déroulée à Auckland,
en Nouvelle Zélande, en 2003.
La montre GIRARD-PERREGAUX SEA HAWK II - USA 71 est donc
dédiée au prochain défi pour la 32e Coupe de l’America qui se déroulera
à Valencia (Espagne) en 2007. C’est pour cette raison
que sur le cadran en fibre de carbone apparaît cette
mention Challenger of Record, titre officiel du Team
BMW ORACLE Racing en sa qualité de représentant des Challengers dans la définition des règles de la
Coupe de l’America.
Les chiffres marquant les heures du cadran s’inspirent
de ceux que l’on voit sur les voiles, identifiant les bateaux engagés dans la Coupe de l’America. Sur le fond
de la boîte, sont gravés le profil technique du bateau
de la classe America “USA 71” ainsi que le numéro
caractérisant cette édition limitée.
Ce modèle de plongée, dont l’étanchéité a été homologuée à 300 mètres
de profondeur, porte sur son cadran l’indicateur de réserve de marche du
mouvement mécanique à remontage automatique GP3300, dont la durée
est de 46 heures.
Le boîtier de la SEA HAWK II - USA 71 a fait l’objet d’un développement
spécifique pour ce modèle dont la lunette tournante a été adaptée pour
une plus grande maniabilité. Positionnée à 4 h, la couronne est dotée d’un
protège-couronne très spécifique, de forme ergonomique, qui souligne la
forte personnalité de cette montre.

The SEA HAWK II - USA 71, a version of the TEAM WATCH, will be
produced in a limited edition of 500 pieces. It is named after the first of the
two boats the BMW ORACLE Racing Team designed for the 31st America’s
Cup, held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2003.
GIRARD-PERREGAUX has dedicated the SEA HAWK II - USA 71 to
the challenge for the 32nd America’s Cup, which is to be held in Valencia
(Spain) in 2007. The words Challenger of Record appear on the carbon fibre
dial because this is the official title of the BMW ORACLE Racing Team in
its capacity as representative for the challengers in defining the rules of the America’s Cup.
The numerals on the dial are inspired by the numbers
used on the sails to identify America’s Cup boats.
The back of the watch is engraved with a technical drawing of the America “USA 71” class boat and the watch’s
individual serial number.
This diver’s watch, which is officially listed as waterresistant to 300 metres, houses an automatic mechanical
GP3300 movement with a 46-hour power reserve displayed on the dial.
The SEA HAWK II - USA 71 case has been specially designed for this
model, while the rotating bezel has been adapted for greater manageability.
The crown, at 4 o’clock, is protected by a highly original, ergonomic crownshield, underscoring the watch’s strong personality.

la Coupe de l’America 2007. C’est un chronographe Heures du monde
ww.tc - USA 76 Challenger of Record. La fonction Heures du monde
permet de mesurer le temps de tous les fuseaux horaires de la planète sur
le cadran.
USA 76 est le yacht Classe America avec lequel l’équipage de BMW
ORACLE Racing a navigué pour la sélection finale des challengers lors
de la 31e Coupe de l’America à Auckland, Nouvelle-Zélande en 2003
et avec lequel il a gagné les régates de l’Act1 pour la
32e Coupe de l’America en 2004.
L’équipage de BMW ORACLE Racing représente le

The hours of the world function permits the simultaneous display of all the
planet’s time-zones on its dial.
USA 76 is the America Class yacht, in which the BMW ORACLE Racing
team sailed in the final selection between the challengers for the 31st America’s
Cup in Auckland, New Zealand in 2003, and in which it won in the 2004
Act1 of the practice regattas for the 32nd America’s Cup.
The BMW ORACLE Racing team represents the Golden
Gate Yacht Club in the America’s Cup regattas that will
take place in Valencia, Spain in 2007.
This explains why the time-zone of the West Coast of
America is represented by the banner of the Golden Gate
Yacht Club, whose headquarters is in San Francisco bay, on
the outer city band of the watch’s dial. Similarly, Western
Europe’s time-zone is symbolized by the city of Valencia.
On the dial, one can see the caption Challenger of Record,
the official title of BMW ORACLE Racing, which
represents the challengers according to the definition in the regulations for the
32nd America’s Cup.
At 9 o’clock, the minute hand of the chronograph highlights the 10 minutes
before the start of a regatta, by means of a half-blue, half-red segment.
The case of the watch is made of stainless steel, on the back of which is engraved the technical profile of USA 76.
