The Legend of Sleeping Knights Having seen many countries and places in the world the narrator declares that real rest can only be found in the Tatra Mountains. One day as he was standing on the bridge in Koscieliska Valley admiring a sculpture of a knight carved out in a rock, a white-haired highlander approached him and told him the following story. The sculpture with a helmet on his head and wings at his shoulders has been made to memorize that in these rocks, in a spacious cave there is a sleeping Polish army. The knights arrived in the mountains many centuries ago, when excellent and famous Boleslaw Chrobry was the king. Nobody has seen them since. Nobody except a shepherd boy, who was taking care of a flock of sheep in the valley. While the sheep were grazing watched by the shepherd’s dog, the boy was climbing the rocks and wandering in the valleys. One day he reached a secluded place where there was no path. To get some courage he shouted three times at the forest and the mountains, when out of a sudden he heard the sound like that of the organ and the rock split. Out went an enormous knight, covered in armour, wearing wings and carrying a sword, and asked the boy whether it was time. Frightened boy could not say a word. When the knight saw it, he explained gently that he was not a robber but a knight sleeping together with his army in the cave, waiting for a chosen boy. The boy was to bring the news that people became good and wise, they do not want to suffer from servitude any more and are ready to fight for freedom. Then the knights would wake from the long sleep and get up to fight as well. Deeply moved, the shepherd boy fell down on his knees and promised the knight to go among people to spread the news. The warior raised him and led him inside the rock so that the boy could see with his own eyes the armoured army. After taking many turnings they reached an enormous cave where infinite rows of knights in golden armour were sitting on beautiful stallions waiting for the knightguard. When he told them it was not time yet, they all fell asleep. The boy returned taking the same route. That evening he told his father what had happened to him. The man agreed his boy had a great mission – to teach people faith and wisdom. First, however, he had to get knowledge and gain experience. The boy was sent to school. The little shepherd grew to become a wise man, teaching people, but not many wanted to hear and understood his words. The prophecy about the sleeping knights could not be fulfilled. But in many hearts there is hope that soon people will change and a little boy will find the route to the rock, and with his words: “It’s time” he will wake up the sleeping knights of king Boleslaw. Pewnego dnia, gdy stał na moście w Dolinie Kościeliskiej i podziwiał rzeźbę rycerza, wykutą w skale, podszedł do niego siwy góral i opowiedział mu następującą historię. Wojownik podniósł go z ziemi i poprowadził w głąb skały, żeby mógł na własne oczy zobaczyć zbrojny hufiec. Wcześniej jednak sam musi wiedzę i oświecenie zyskać. Posłał go więc do szkół.
