Mother Tongue at Overseas Family School
Retention and Development of Mother Tongue is
essential for students learning in English
• It is in the dominant language (usually Mother Tongue) that higher level thinking takes place.
P If Mother Tongue plateaus or declines, higher level thinking declines also.
P This is especially pronounced in very young children.
• Many students require Mother Tongue for later study in their home country
P Older students often retain reasonable oral language skills in Mother Tongue, but written and grammar skills decline considerably, often to the stage that they cannot access their home universities.
• Overseas Family School has expanded its support of a wide range of Mother Tongues, taking advantage of our considerable additional facilities at the Pasir Ris campus.
• As students move through our school, we intend to give as many students as possible, the opportunity to aim for an IB Bilingual Diploma (via Language A Mother Tongue, in addition to Language A English).
P This requires that students continue to develop strong Mother Tongue skills right through their schooling.
P As students move through our school, Mother Tongue courses will therefore expand through the grades, to Grade 12.
P This will prepare them for further university study in home country or abroad.
• This programme will be well resourced
P Four sessions per week, in Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K2), Kindergarten,
Elementary School and Middle School.
P Integrated into the academic programmes.
P All features of any other subject, i.e. Assessment, homework, reporting, etc.
P Will focus on reading, writing, listening, speaking and culture. Courses to include literature in Mother Tongue.
P Will be an additional choice for parents, instead of second language study.
P Will not involve an additional fee.
• Teachers will be:
P Native speakers of the language, with teacher training and degree earned in the home country.
P Qualified to teach in the home country.
P Fluent also in English.
