AS BRILLIANCE FELL
As brilliance fell I girded me with voice.
But always all words waste from inward out
And I who was fastened to that furious choice
Turned out to hear myself as a contrary shout.
As the night signed I made making my house.
Yet always all words waste and alter into
A formal ruin lesser than that voice
So clenched in prison in my mortal tree.
At final night I perished into words.
And always all words ill-devise the tongue
That at poor best must sing the beast it guards.
As his blood sang the poem-imprisoned king
Sang me more than myself and made the whole
Descended house of night my house excel.

L’éclat tombant je me ceignis de voix.
Mais toujours tous les mots s’épuisent du cœur au dehors
Et moi entravé à ce choix furieux
J’en vins à m’entendre tel un cri opposé.
La nuit signant je fis du faire ma demeure.
Cependant toujours tous les mots s’épuisent et se changent en
Ruines formelles moindres que cette voix
Si serrée en prison dans mon arbre mortel.
En nuit dernière je péris dans les mots.
Et toujours tous les mots font mauvais dessein à la langue
Qui de son pauvre mieux doit chanter la bête qu’elle veille.
Son sang chantant le roi qu’encageait le poème
Me chanta plus que moi-même et fit devant ma maison

Anne-Sylvie Homassel (qui œuvre aussi sous le nom d’Anne-Sylvie
Salzman) est traductrice littéraire et auteur de fiction. Elle codirige la revue
Le Visage vert et la maison d’édition du même nom. Elle a publié deux
romans, Au bord d’un lent fleuve noir (Joëlle Losfeld, 1997), Sommeil (José Corti,
2000), et deux recueils de nouvelles, Lamont (Visage vert, 2009) et
Darkscapes (traduit du français par William Charlton, Tartarus Press, 2013).
Blandine Longre, auteur et traductrice littéraire, coédite la revue de
littérature bilingue The Black Herald. Son premier recueil de poésie, Clarities,
a paru en 2010. Elle traduit de nombreux poètes, dont Paul Stubbs et
Gregory Corso. Parmi ses traductions, des romans de Michelle Paver, de
Tabish Khair et de L. F. Baum.
Michael Snow (1930-2012)
Peintre non-figuratif né à Manchester, Michael Snow, étroitement associé à
de nombreux artistes modernistes de l’école de St Ives en Cornouailles,
dont le peintre Ben Nicholson, fut également un proche du poète W. S.
Graham et de son épouse Nessie Dunsmuir. Il fut l’un des fondateurs du
Peterloo Group de Manchester avec son ami Robin Skelton, poète et critique, dont il épousa la première femme, Margaret. Il participa activement à
la Penwith Society of Arts et enseigna à la Exeter School of Art and Design
jusqu’en 1985. Avec Margaret Snow (décédée en 2009), il ne cessa de
promouvoir l’œuvre de Graham, dont les droits de succession lui avaient
été confiés. En témoigne entre autres la parution de The Nightfisherman:
Selected Letters of W. S. Graham (1999) sous la direction de Margaret et Michael Snow, ouvrage salué par la critique en Grande-Bretagne.
Paul Stubbs, poète britannique, est l’auteur de trois recueils parus en
Grande-Bretagne, The Theological Museum (Flambard Press, 2005), The Icon
Maker (Arc Publications, 2008) et The End of the Trial of Man (Arc Publications, 2013), ainsi que de deux longs poèmes, Ex Nihilo et Flesh (Black
Herald Press). À son actif, également, diverses pièces de théâtre et un recueil d’essais portant sur Arthur Rimbaud, The Carbonized Earth, ainsi que
des critiques publiées en revues. Il codirige la revue de littérature bilingue
The Black Herald.

Anne-Sylvie Homassel (a.k.a. Anne-Sylvie Salzman) is a Paris-based
writer and literary translator. She co-edits Le Visage vert, a literary magazine
and small press. She is the author of two novels, Au bord d'un lent fleuve noir
(Joëlle Losfeld, 1997) Sommeil (J. Corti, 2000), and of two collections of
short stories, Lamont (Le Visage vert, 2013) and Darkscapes (translated from
the French by William Charlton, Tartarus Press, 2013).
Blandine Longre is a writer, literary translator and co-editor of The Black
Herald. Her poetry collection Clarities was published in 2010. She has translated various poets in French, including Paul Stubbs and Gregory Corso,
and novels by Tabish Khair, Michelle Paver and L. F. Baum.
Michael Snow (1930-2012)
Non-figurative painter born in Manchester, Michael Snow was associated
with many modernist artists of the St Ives school in Cornwall, including
Ben Nicholson, and was a close friend of the poet W. S. Graham and his
wife Nessie Dunsmuir. Michael cofounded the Peterloo Group with the
poet and literary critic Robin Skelton, whose first wife Margaret he eventually married, and was an active member of the Penwith Society of Arts. He
also taught at Exeter School of Art and Design from 1965 to 1985.
Margaret (deceased in 2009) and Michael Snow never ceased to promote
the work of Graham, whose literary estate had been bequeathed to them,
among others by editing and publishing The Nightfisherman: Selected Letters of
W. S. Graham in 1999, a book praised by critics in Great Britain.
Paul Stubbs, British poet, is the author of three poetry collections, The
Theological Museum (Flambard, 2005), The Icon Maker (Arc Publications,
2008), The End of the Trial of Man (Arc Publications, 2013), of two long
poems, Ex Nihilo and Flesh (Black Herald Press, 2010, 2013), of various
plays and of a book of essays about Arthur Rimbaud, The Carbonized Earth.
His poems and reviews have appeared in a variety of anthologies and
magazines. He also co-edits The Black Herald, a bilingual literary journal.
