After learning of the recommendation made by the board of directors of the Shrine of North
America to build the new Shriners pediatric orthopaedic hospital in London, Ontario, we
reiterate the importance of keeping this institution and expertise in Montreal. And while no
final decision has yet been made, it has become urgently important to join forces and deploy
all our efforts to make sure the hospital stays in Montreal.
To this end, we would like to express our support to the partners concerned – the heads of
the McGill University Health Centre, the Montreal Shriners Hospital for Children, the mayor
of Montreal and the Quebec government – and assure them of our willingness to actively
participate in any steps taken to convince the Shriners delegates of Montreal’s undeniable
advantages.
An integral part of the Montreal community for 80 years, the Montreal Shriners Hospital is
one of Quebec’s best medical success stories, boasting a team with outstanding expertise.
This is a first-rate asset that cannot be ignored. Moreover, the city of Montreal offers many
advantages to the Shriners Hospital: it is the only Canadian city with two medical faculties
and boasts a large pool of experienced researchers and state-of-the-art medical technology.
Unlike other Canadian cities such as London, Ottawa, Winnipeg, and Vancouver, Montreal
has strengths that will allow it to maintain the synergy between the Shriners Hospital,
research institutes, faculties of medicine, and Montreal hospitals devoted to medical
innovation throughout Quebec.
Moreover, by building the new Shriners near the MUHC, the hospital would derive a two-fold
benefit: the synergy created with one of the best medical faculties in the world and the
opportunity to work with seasoned professionals.
Of course, Montreal would welcome the $100 million construction project and a facility on
the cusp of orthopaedic technology, one that is sure to boost the city’s stature as a centre
of excellence in health and research. But beyond the economic spin-offs and international
visibility, the biggest winners would be the children of Quebec who need orthopaedic care.
The Shriners delegates will announce their final decision in July: let’s join forces and do
what it takes to make them change their mind.
