It then acts as a switch. The switching transistor is used to open or close a circuit. The transistor can be controlled by a photodiode or a phototransistor and thus control a relay and/or the lighting up of a LED. 2 Composition The transistor study plate is a printed circuit comprising: - 1 transistor on a carrier.. - 1 potentiometer of 1MΩ. - 1 relay self-inductance coil with a free wheel diode. - 1 photodiode. - 1 phototransistor. - 2 resistors of 1kΩ. - 1 resistor of 100 kΩ. - 5 safety jumpers with rear connectors. 3 Recommended addition - ENGLISH Power supply: DC between 9 and 12V; 1 A. 7 Electricity Study of switching transistor module Réf : 302 007 - Connections: Double recess – Safety sockets of diameter 4 mm. - White LED: P/N 202 170. 4 Technical characteristics - Dimensions : 180 x 160 x 80 mm - Transistor : - NPN transistor of the type BC548C, BC547C, BC237C or BC239C - Current gain ß ~ 400 - Photodiode: Without light excitation (with an outside source such as a white LED) the photodiode is in the blocked position and acts like an open switch. It conducts current under the influence of light. - Phototransistor: Without light excitation (with an outside source such as a white LED) the phototransistor is in the blocked position and acts like an open switch. It conducts current under the influence of light. - Rise time = 5 μs - Fall time = 5 μs - Relay: - Type GS-SH-212T - A free wheel diode connected in parallel to the coil protects the transistor against over-voltage (self induction current) generated in the coil during switching. 5 Transistor switching function The transistor is a controllable semiconductor allowing 2 types of operation. A “blocked saturated” type of operation (switching mode) and operation as a current amplifier (linear operation). An NPN type transistor can operate in both switching and amplification mode. ENGLISH 8 Electricity Study of switching transistor module Réf : 302 007 Linear operating mode: the transistor is on-state (linear amplification). For Ib between 0 and IBsat : - VBE ~ 0,6V Ic = ß x IB IE = IB + IC In switching mode: Blocked state: this state is obtained for a nil base current, the transistor acting like an open switch. - Ic = 0 VCE ~ VCC Saturated state: this state is obtained for an intensity IB= IBsat. The transistor acts like a closed switch. - VCE = VCEsat (~ 0 V). IC = ICsat 6 Set-up 6.1 Principle Using the safety jumpers supplied make the following set-up: In blocked mode, VCE = VCC the relay is open and the LED is not lit up. In saturated mode, VCE ~ 0V the relay is closed and the LED is lit up. A photodiode or a photo transistor allows controlling the transistor. Switched Circuit Control Circuit By varying the potentiometer it is easy to change from blocked to saturated mode. In addition, use of multi-meters allows following up all the transistor operating modes (versus the resistance value set by the potentiometer). ENGLISH 9 Electricity Study of switching transistor module Réf : 302 007 6.2 Study of the transistor as a switch controlled by a photodiode or a phototransistor. Using the potentiometer establish non linear conditions for the transistor (by reaching the “LED on” threshold): Initial setup: The photodiode is not excited and allows solely a very weak current to pass and so acts like an open switch. In these conditions: Ic = Icsat and the transistor is in saturated status. The relay, crossed by the Icsat is then closed and the LED is lit up. Excitation of the photodiode : Under the effect of white light, the photodiode allows the current to pass and the LED goes out. In these conditions: Ic = 0, the relay is not supplied with power and is open, and the LED is not lit up. ENGLISH 10 Electricity Study of switching transistor module Réf : 302 007 Remark: By moving the safety jumper it is possible to use the phototransistor in place of the photodiode. 7 Diagnostics Verification of the transistor: Using a multi-meter in the “Diode Position”, verify there is voltage close to 0.7 V between Base-Receiver then BaseTransmitter. 8 After-Sales Service This material is under a two year warranty and should be returned to our stores in the event of any defects.
