Chairman’s Message
Almost before the last lusty cheers at the closing
ceremonies in Croke Park had died away and the
curtain rung down on Dublin’s spectacular World
Summer Games, letters, e-mails, faxes and other
communiqués began pouring in to Special Olympics’
Toronto headquarters.
They came from Members of Parliament, both
Federal and Provincial, athletes’ families, friends, and
a variety of Team Canada supporters all anxious to
extend congratulations and best wishes to the
athletes on their spectacular performances in Ireland.
And spectacular they were, whether on the track at
Morton Stadium, the University soccer fields, the RDS
Gym or the world class pool. 102 medals from 58
participants, 51 of them the gold variety.
Spectacular indeed!
MPs Paul Steckle, Jane Stewart, Pat Martin,
Réginald Bélair, Joe Comartin, Newfoundland’s Norman
Doyle, Christiáne Gagnon and Gary Pillitteri were some
of the early parliamentarians conveying their heartfelt
good wishes. Chris and Garth Keays told us of the
wonderful reception their son Kalim has enjoyed since
his return. Kalim is a hometown hero in Tisdale,
Saskatchewan, while Belleville, Ontario turned out in
“brilliant” fashion to honour Scott
Herrington, whose parents Jean and
Richard refer to the Games as “the
trip of a lifetime”.
All of which leads to the
conclusion that as successful as the
Games were in Ireland, they have
impacted Canada like no previous
World competitions, summer or
winter. The message of Special
Olympics athletes is being heard and seen in an ever
increasing number of Canadian communities, in very
large part due to the Team Canada athletes and
coaches whose commitment and world class
performance focus attention on the entire
organization. Reflections from gold, silver and bronze
medals shine on the grassroots programs that
ultimately produce the standard bearers, themselves
a product of the thousands of local clubs that are
the lifeblood of Special Olympics, the raison d’etre of
who we are and why we exist.
In sharing the undeniable glories of Team
Canada’s achievements on the world stage once
again, let us never lose sight of those athletes,
coaches, families and administrators whose victories
are in their day-to-day progress to a more purposeful
life through the disciplines of sport.

canadiennes toujours plus nombreuses, c’est
en très grande partie grâce aux athlètes et aux
entraîneurs d’Équipe Canada, dont
l’engagement et les performances de calibre
international attirent l’attention sur
l’organisation dans son ensemble. Des reflets
d’or, d’argent et de bronze illuminent les
programmes communautaires qui produisent
les médaillés, eux-mêmes produits des milliers
de clubs locaux à former la pierre angulaire des
Jeux olympiques spéciaux – notre raison
d’être.
Membres des parlements fédéral et
provinciaux, parents d’athlètes, amis et
autres partisans d’Équipe Canada voulaient
féliciter sans tarder nos athlètes pour leurs
performances spectaculaires en Irlande. Et
spectaculaires elles l’ont été, ces
performances, que ce soit sur la piste du
Morton Stadium, sur les terrains de soccer de
l’université, au gymnase RDS ou à la piscine
de classe internationale : une récolte de 102
médailles – dont 51 d’or – pour nos
58 athlètes!
Au moment de partager une fois encore
la gloire indéniable d’Équipe Canada sur la
scène internationale, ne perdons jamais de vue
ces athlètes, ces entraîneurs, ces parents et
ces administrateurs, dont la victoire réside
dans la progression quotidienne vers une vie
plus significative grâce à la discipline du sport.

athlète, Scott Herrington, de « brillante »
façon; les parents de Scott, Jean et Richard,
parlent des Jeux comme du « voyage de leur
vie ».

A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINES
All good things must come to an end and the World Summer Games and my
role as Honourary Head Coach are no exceptions. The inevitability of the
situation in no way deters from the feelings of pride and achievement I
brought home from Ireland. They grow stronger the more I realize I’ll never
again be able to share with our athletes and coaches the unique relationship
provided by my honourary position with them.

From the uplifting experience of our Send-off Dinner in Hamilton to the
indescribable exhilaration of leading our team into Croke Park before 85,000
appreciative supporters of the Games, my tenure was one daily exercise in
sheer joy.
When the Nagano Games roll around in 2005 someone else will be offered
the opportunity of a lifetime, just as I was in Dublin. I am certain the same
overwhelming reactions will accompany that fortunate soul once the shock of
being selected wears off and the realization hits home of the enormous honour
one is provided in this role.
Space limits my ability to convey so many of the thoughts, observations
and memories associated with my adventure. But I cannot close without
reliving the exciting moments of our athletes, in the pool, the gym, the track

fashion. What an honour to carry into the twilight of my life – a very small cog
in a finely tuned machine. One that brought individual and collective achievement to new heights in
the history of Special Olympics in Canada.
Being along for the ride was truly a highlight of my life. Can Nagano be any better?

REGARD SUR LES
JEUX
Toutes les bonnes choses ont une fin, et il en va
ainsi des Jeux mondiaux d’été et de mon rôle
d’entraîneur en chef honoraire. Cette fatalité
n’entame toutefois en rien les sentiments de fierté
et d’accomplissement que j’ai rapportés d’Irlande.
J’en suis au contraire de plus en plus pénétré, car
je réalise que jamais plus je ne pourrai partager
avec nos athlètes et nos entraîneurs le lien unique
qui nous a unis durant mon mandat.

A warm welcome in
Enniscorthy for Team Canada
Je me repasse en esprit les exploits de nos
athlètes à la piscine, au gymnase, sur la piste et
sur les terrains de soccer. Partout, nos athlètes
ont volé la vedette, nos entraîneurs ont été
louangés pour leur talent de motivateurs, notre
personnel de mission, nos familles et nos amis se
sont comportés de manière exemplaire. Quel
souvenir à caresser au crépuscule de ma vie –
avoir été ce tout modeste engrenage d’une
machine réglée au quart de tour, une machine qui
aura mené l’accomplissement individuel et collectif
vers de nouveaux sommets dans l’histoire
canadienne des Jeux olympiques spéciaux.

Wow! It is very difficult to find words that properly describe the amazing experience I
had being part of Team Canada and the 2003 World Summer Games. I was
continually in awe – of our Team and of the people of Ireland. The hospitality shown
to us in our Host Town of Enniscorthy was unprecedented. We experienced true Irish
culture in families’ homes and all of the citizens in the town displayed warmth and
welcome second to none. Everywhere we went and at every function hosted in our
honour, we were greeted by throngs of people of all ages, cheers to rival an Irish
hurling match and flags and bunting bearing the maple leaf. Relationships were
formed and memories were created that will last lifetimes. Wow!
My greatest memories of the Games involve witnessing our athletes consistently
perform higher, stronger and faster than other athletes from around the World and
Patti Barrett
continually achieving personal bests. They were focussed, determined and obviously
very skilled. The Mission Staff and Coaches brought their vast array of knowledge
and experience together to support the athletes and the Team as a whole. They displayed teamwork,
patience and enthusiasm while ensuring that our athletes performed to their very best. Our athletes, coaches
and mission staff were true Canadian ambassadors that instilled a sense of pride in me that won’t ever be
extinguished. Wow!
Add to our major athletic and personal achievements an Opening Ceremony, highlighted by U2 and Nelson
Mandella, volunteers willing to meet every participant’s needs and a country that truly embraced the Games as
their own and treated it as the World class sporting event that it was. Wow!
Thank you to the National Office, the National Team Program Committee and all the chapters for your roles
in making this Team and Games experience successful. A very special and personal thank you and
congratulations to all Team members for showing us what a trained, committed and enthusiastic group of
people can accomplish. Wow!

Waouh! Pas facile de trouver les mots pour décrire mon expérience incroyable comme membre
d’Équipe Canada aux Jeux mondiaux d’été de 2003! L’équipe et le peuple irlandais n’ont pas cessé de
m’imposer le plus grand respect. À Enniscorthy, nos familles d’accueil nous ont fait goûter à l’authentique
culture irlandaise et tous les habitants de la ville nous ont reçus avec une chaleur sans pareille. Partout
sur notre passage, à toutes les fêtes données en notre honneur et lors du match de hurling amical qui
nous a opposés à une équipe du cru, une foule de personnes de tous âges nous a acclamés et on a fait
flotter le drapeau canadien. Les liens noués et les souvenirs accumulés demeureront impérissables.
Waouh!
Parmi mes meilleurs souvenirs des Jeux restera d’avoir vu nos athlètes performer toujours plus
haut, plus fort et plus vite que leurs concurrents du monde entier et battre constamment leurs records
personnels. Ils étaient concentrés, déterminés et manifestement très compétents. Pour veiller à ce qu’ils
donnent le meilleur d’eux-mêmes, le personnel de mission et les entraîneurs ont uni leur vaste savoir et
leur expérience et ont démontré esprit d’équipe, patience et enthousiasme. Athlètes, entraîneurs et
employés de mission ont agi en véritables ambassadeurs du Canada et m’ont inspiré une fierté durable.

En plus de nos réalisations sportives et personnelles, les Jeux ont été marqués par une cérémonie
d’ouverture qu’a rehaussé la présence de U2 et Nelson Mandella, des bénévoles désireux de répondre à
tous les besoins des participants et l’attitude du pays hôte, qui s’était véritablement approprié
l’événement et l’a traité en rencontre sportive d’envergure internationale. Waouh!
Merci au bureau national, au comité du Programme de l’équipe nationale et à toutes les sections
d’avoir participé au succès et à la satisfaction d’Équipe Canada 2003. Merci et bravo également à tous
les membres de l’équipe, qui nous ont montré ce que pouvait accomplir un groupe de personnes
entraînées, engagées et emballées. Waouh!

THE PROOF IS IN
The amount of hardware that Team Canada brought home
was a good reflection of the Team’s performance at the
World Games but it doesn’t tell the whole story. More
important than the medals was the improvement each
athlete showed after their participation in the National
Team Program.
As a member of the National Team Training Squad each
athlete trained a minimum of three times a week under the
supervision of their training coaches. The dedication of the
athletes and coaches to the program resulted in
phenomenal achievements by the athletes. If there was
ever a question whether the National Team Program was a
success or if it is worth the money, just look at the
improvements shown by the Team Canada athletics and
swim teams. Of the 32 athletes on those squads, 31
showed improvement in their times from the National
Games last summer in Prince Albert!
Team Canada was a success in all areas. Through
sport they showed what athletes with a mental disability
can accomplish when provided with the financial and
human resources needed to achieve their best. We salute
them all as true champions.

AU FRUIT QU’ON JUGE L’ARBRE!
Si la lourde quincaillerie qu’Équipe Canada a rapporté des Jeux mondiaux témoigne de la performance de
l’équipe, elle ne raconte pas toute l’histoire. Plus importants que les médailles, il y a les progrès que le
Programme de l’équipe nationale a permis à chaque athlète d’accomplir.
Les membres du Groupe d’entraînement de
l’équipe nationale se sont entraînés au moins trois
fois par semaine sous la surveillance de leurs
entraîneurs locaux. Leurs exploits, ils les doivent à
leur engagement et à celui de leurs entraîneurs par
rapport au programme. Si vous vous êtes jamais
interrogé sur la réussite du Programme de l’équipe
nationale ou sur sa rentabilité, jetez seulement un
coup d’œil aux résultats des équipes d’athlétisme et
de natation. Des 32 athlètes appartenant à ces
équipes, 31 ont amélioré les temps qu’ils avaient
réalisés aux Jeux nationaux de l’été dernier à Prince
Albert!
L’arrivée du flambeau!
Équipe Canada : un succès à tous égards. Ses
membres ont montré ce que pouvaient accomplir
des athlètes ayant une déficience intellectuelle,
quand on leur fournissait les ressources humaines
et financières voulues pour donner leur pleine
mesure. Nous les saluons tous comme de véritables champions.

TEAM CANADA ADOPT-AN-ATHLETE PROGRAM
PROGRAMME ADOPTEZ UN ATHLÈTE D’ÉQUIPE CANADA
The most successful athlete sponsorship program
ever undertaken by Special Olympics Canada was
largely instrumental in delivering Team Canada to
Ireland’s glistening shores. Listed below are all 58
members of the Team and the corporate sponsors
whose generous contributions to the fund assured
no athletes would be left behind. SOC President Jim
Jordan, speaking at the Team Canada Send-Off
Dinner, noted that “these 2003 Games are by far the
most costly of any World Games in which we have
participated. Without the Adopt-an-Athlete program,
we would now be in a serious deficit situation. This
exceptional support is one more reason these were,
by far, our best Games ever”.
Adoptez un athlète, programme de parrainage
d’athlètes le plus profitable jamais lancé par Jeux
olympiques spéciaux Canada, aura largement
contribué au débarquement d’Équipe Canada sur les
rives chatoyantes de l’Irlande. Ci-dessous sont
énumérés les 59 membres de l’équipe et les parrains
dont la générosité a fait en sorte que nul ne soit
laissé derrière. Prenant la parole au dîner d’au revoir
à l’équipe, le président de JOSC, Jim Jordan, a
déclaré : « Ces Jeux mondiaux de 2003 sont de loin
les plus coûteux auxquels nous ayons pris part. Sans
le programme Adoptez un athlète, nous affronterions
aujourd’hui un déficit important. » Cet appui
exceptionnel a concouru à faire de l’événement nos
meilleurs jeux à ce jour.

Toyota played a major role in sponsoring the
2003 World Games. Apart from contributing
One Million Euro Dollars ($1.6 CDN) to the
Games Organizing Committee, the company
provided 260 vehicles for VIP and administrative
transport. In addition, Toyota’s Dublin Head Office
became the Family Registration Centre for the duration
of the Games. More than 28,000 family members from
all over the world received Toyota carry bags and
travel information at the Centre. As well, the GOC ran
seminars on Health and Diet counseling from the same
venue during the Games.

Mark Hierlihy who joins the Special
Olympics family after serving as

Arts Centre in Ottawa. Mark is a
native of Prince Edward Island and
began his career there leading a
highly successful campaign for the
Prince County Hospital Foundation in
Summerside. We are very pleased to
have Mark on our team!

challenges we faced as the Irish Government
considered banning the participation of our
Canadian athletes because of SARS.
Overwhelming support from Canadians and
the Irish people resulted in this ban being
reversed but with some restrictions which
prevented us holding the send-off Gala at the
Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
In light of the challenges, we owe special
thanks to Presenting Sponsor Delta Hotels &

also other sponsors, donors
and volunteers who helped
make the event an
overwhelming success.
Together, their unwavering

SITTLER-WHITT SCF G OLF CLASSIC
Under a brilliant summer sky the carefully manicured
fairways of RattleSnake Point welcomed the 12th Annual
Sittler-Whitt SCF Golf Classic on Monday, June 23rd. Over
240 ardent supporters of the Classic, ignoring memories of
last year’s wet and stormy outing, were treated to a
variety of on-course competitions, providing a wide range
of prize opportunities.
