Dossier de presse_Cyril Bondi_2012 "Komatsu is the title of a rather nice new album on the consistently strong Insubordinations net label by the duo of Cyril Bondi (floor tom and objects) and Phonotopy, the artist name of Yann Leguay, who is credited with Cracked Electronics, which on this occasion would appear to be old hard drives used like old school turntables. The album consists of a single half hour long piece of dense, heavily textured music that seems to flow out of the speakers in an almost physical manner, thickening the air and sticking to anything it touches. The duo manage to create a wall of sound that is rich with bassy depth and yet transparent enough for the layers of detail to be heard through it all. Nothing here sounds very much like a floor tom. It's hard to say what cracked hard drives should sound like, but I wouldn't have had them high up my list if you asked me what instrumentation was at work here either. If anything the music here sounds like densely layered field recordings as much as anything. There is a similarity to something like Pisaro's July Mountain, but the music that I am reminded of most is the various duo releases by Jason Kahn and Asher, perhaps as I am reminded of pressurised weather systems by this music in a similar way to that particular duo. Tonight as I have listened the atmosphere here is very humid indeed, following on from what I think was the hottest day of the year so far here, and for the first couple of listens through this evening, when I got in from work, I sat in the garden and listened with headphones. The way the music's oppressive sensations combined with the humidity of the weather and the slowly gathering gloom of dusk made for a feeling of an impending storm, though sadly it never came. Komatsu then is a highly skilled, carefully controlled album that inhabits a space and spreads out within it, making it entirely its own. It lives and breathes, inhales and exhales rather than shout and scream, but it is constantly alive, hairs bristling, continually on the brink of erupting but never quite doing so, thinning out in places as if to start to fall apart but in the end staying strong until a somewhat abrupt ending at the thirty-one minute mark. A strong one, but find out for yourself for free here and really, buy a copy if you think its worth it." Richard Pinnell/www.thewatchfulear.com/19.08.12 *** "It was brought to my attention elsewhere that I'd heard Bondi in the context of the duo, Diatribes (short term memory fading!). Here, he's paired with Phonotopy (Yann Leguay) on "cracked electronics" and the result is striking an subtly unique. I'm not sure how his floor tom setupset-up contributes to this dense, throbbing, quasi-rhythmic, menacing and altogether enticing music, but I'd be anxious to see. Phonotopy's instrumental description refers directly to the erstwhile Poire_z, even to the use of the underscore between his nom and the device on the disc sleeve, and I guess one reasonable description of this would be akin to a seriously excellent Poire_z set. That bristling pulse, the sense that there's a ton going on, much of which you're probably not picking up at any one moment, the real darkness and threat that's emitted; it all makes for an extremely satisfying and giddily exciting listen. It gets into some great shuddering moments as the rhythms seem on the verge of toppling into themselves, a real thrill of imminent collapse about 2/3 of the way through as the gears begin to squeak, the oil running low. Instead, it just settles into a slow boil, replete with bubbling explosions, like a hot, viscous liquid. A fine piece, would love to see/hear this live." Speaking of Cyril Bondi, here he is in a role more generally associated with that of a drummer, in a free improvisation sax/guitar/drums trio. Thirteen short pieces covering a rather large range of styles, from fusion-leaning free jazz to non-idiomatic free improvisation, and on toward more textural and microsonic realms. Berthen and Vonlanthen have highly creative exchanges, but what fascinated me throughout was Bondi's playing: his deconstructed playing, demultiplied between hits and strokes, drums and sounding objects." Monsieur Délire/12/07/12 *** "The first is a duo disc of Cyril Bondi playing floor tom and objects and Phonotopy played cracked electronics. They do this in one piece that lasts thirty-one minutes. You could easily think that, seeing these 'instruments' that this is a matter of many sounds, bouncing and rolling about, played hectic, frenetic, nervous, but such is not the case here. Its more a piece with a great, drone like quality to it, of sizzling, bubbling sounds, of electrical motors running, mechanical devices touching upon surfaces; resonating matter and lots of obscured sounds play a role in this, making a highly fascinating piece of music, with slow but inevitable changes as matter progress. Played with great care and extreme love for detail, yet never losing the 'other' out of sight. A very fine piece of music at the border of drone and improvised music, while without being strictly one or the other. For fans of Jason Kahn, I'd say: pay attention here!" Rafa Segura / 25 June 2012 *** " What do we mean by 'post-jazz'? What do we mean by any cultural phenomenon that defines itself as 'post-something'? The situation is much clearer with a movement like PreRaphaelitism, which simply attempts to re-set the clock at a particular moment in creative evolution and ignore the distracting or corrupting influences which followed it. That is purism of a sort, conservatism of a sort. It is green-field thinking rather than apocalyptic. It doesn't pick through the ruins. We may be almost done with 'post-modernism' as a cultural descriptor. It means different things in different contexts and to different people, but it shares certain common characteristics: a playful collapsing of genre and a further assault on the distinction between 'high' and 'low' art; it marks the end of consensus as far as 'dominant' style is concerned; it tries to bring to inscribe a full stop to a long, usually tacit debate about whether art is part of life and society or whether art has to separate itself from lived life and from society conceived as something more than a sum of individuals. When one gets really down to it, though, post-modernism seems to be nothing more than an episode of late modernism, or if you prefer, late, late modernism. Its concerns are not so very different from those which hovered round the Armory Show or the riotous premiers of Le Sacre du printemps, both of which mark their centenaries next years [1913]. Its values are not 'after' anything in both the chronological and the vernacular English senses of succession and intention. It has no destination, utopian, nefarious and anything else. It simply is, in an undifferentiated present. Post-modern artists sort through the rubble - Eliot anticipated this in The Waste Land - and use what they want in whatever combination they want. So what of post-jazz, which is what Plaistow is alleged to play? Is it simply a late episode of a 20th century art form which some believed could and should not survive the end of that century, or is already something different and beyond? It is easy enough to hear in Plaistow's music, right from the early [2007] Los Criminales Reciclados en Conductores de Autobuses a reassuringly 'eclectic' blend of Cyril Bondi's 'jazz' drumming, Raphaël Ortis's 'heavy' bass (which perhaps takes more from British rock - McCartney, Entwistle, Bruce, Squire, Fraser, Squarepusher/Tom Jenkinson than from American funk) and Johann Bourquenez's trance-minimalist piano playing (which has connections with Glassworks-era Philip Glass and In C-era Terry Riley than with Bill Evans), but eclecticism is far too easy a label and is really only the result of a decision to hear this music in a particular way, as a coming together in loose constellation of disparate elements. Considered from the inside out, Plaistow's music, and particularly the music on Lacrimosa, emerges as something rather different, rather newer and rather more likely to answer the logic of an expression like 'post-jazz'. There is not much here of theme development and variation, swing, syncopation, or the emotional logic that says jazz is the aural mark of a discrete personality expressing itself without fetters. Nor is Plaistow simply another 'piano trio', on the model set down by Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Evans, Keith Jarrett and in the present era, e.s.t., The Bad Plus, The Necks (though there are resemblances here) and a score or more 'name' trios. The best of these invariably manage to be something more than a piano player with rhythm, or lead bass and featured drums with appropriate accompaniment if the nominal leader favours those instruments. Plaistow, though, always sounds like a group that existed before the instruments were chosen. There is not much 'instrumentalism' about the long title piece that dominates Lacrimosa. It is music that has to be played and that happens to have found its means, rather than the other way round. It is music that explores the nature of duration (Bergson's durée) but without indulging in the 'durational' or 'immersive' antics of a great deal of contemporary music, which simply attempts to hold the listener prisoner until it arbitrarily stops. Bourquenez establishes a pattern that could go on forever, or simply be repeated in the manner of Satie's provocative Vexations, but Bondi and Ortis set up time-frames that strongly suggest the piano isn't necessarily the straw-boss here. 'Lacrimosa' could go one forever, but just as crucially it could stop at any moment which is what distinguishes this music from the virtuosic process playing of The Necks. Wonderful as that group is, one does sense that once the point has been made, the music simply becomes a working-out of a pre-existing logic. One doesn't feel that with Plaistow, who give repetition an air of unpredictability and sudden transitions an impression of sufficiency and inevitability. It's a very daring enterprise and one that is extremely hard to pull off. I think this is post-jazz, a term that I normally abjure with the kind of contempt otherwise reserved only for 'Nu-Jazz' or, God help us, 'lite-jazz'. It comes after something, that longue durée of piano trio jazz sketched above. If it has more in common with the category-busting aesthetics of rock, in its creative manifestation, but this too is deceptive. Rock is always iconoclastic, but often fails to find new uses for the broken idols. Bourquenez, Ortis and Bondi have fashioned a new music, something that has geological connections with recent history and past achievements but which sets out on its own course and with no settled destination. In that sense, it is 'after' nothing. In the other sense, it comes at the end of a history which will continue to reverberate and continue to absorb thousands of people, artists and consumers alike. The real action, though, lies elsewhere and while Plaistow seem to play with the most conventional of means - piano, bass, drums, rather than laptops or haptic interfaces - they do so in quite new and original ways. Post-jazz." Naufrage Ailleurs *** "OK, so pushing myself a little bit with tonight's review. One of the most enjoyable elements to my recent writing for The Wire is that, while i have been lucky enough to write about a few things I have really enjoyed, I tend to be steered clear of anything I may be thought to be connected with somehow and so given a number of assignments writing about music that I wouldn't have considered listening to and writing about for this blog. The experience has been a little enlightening, if also a bit difficult, and I have found myself writing as many negative or at least partly negative reviews for the magazine as I have positive. I usually avoid writing about things here at the blog that I can't get to grips with in anything like a positive manner, but perhaps I shouldn't, and maybe I will write more constructively worded criticism now. The problem is, I really dislike having to listen to, and then write about music I don't enjoy, and seeing as this blog is designed to be a written journal of the joy I find in music every day then don't expect all that many damning reviews, simply because they are no fun to write. So, having decided a couple of days ago to try and do this, I went back deliberately to a CD that I had previously put to one side, as after one play through it left me cold, simply because it belongs to an area of music that doesn't interest me all that much. The CD is a release on the Insubordinations label, available as a free download here or also as a very attractively packaged real CD. The album is named Lacrimosa and is by the trio of Johann Bourquenez, (piano) Raphael Ortis (bass) and Cyril Bondi (Drums) who perform under the name of Plaistow (the name coming from a Squarepusher track title apparently rather than directly from the rather unappealing London borough) regular readers here and visitors to the Insubordinations archive will recognise the Bondi's name as one half of the Diatribes duo. In that group he works with a wide range of percussion in quite a textural manner, but in Plaistow he plays drums, and he really does play drums. To me, Plaistow's music falls somewhere between Radian, The Necks and Dream Syndicate era Faust. It is centred entirely round rhythm, in the most straightforward manner. The three tracks each involve slowly thickening hypnotic pieces that each revolve around the piano or drums, the piano played fast and in circular, dizzily repeated patterns reminiscent of Charlemagne Palestine and the drums following suit. The end result then is a kaleidoscopic, revolving stream of pulse with the bass, which is often bowed, providing meat for the bones laid down by the other two thirds of the trio. Now, as it happens, recently on the hour long drive home from work each night I have taken to listening curiously to a pirate radio station that has launched locally that plays a continual stream of either dubstep, breakbeat or more traditional drum'n bass music, often shouted over by a (usually utterly hilarious) radio MC. I listen mostly because it takes little effort and helps me wind down after a hard day, but also because, ironically, when turned up loud it has an energising effect that keeps me awake (though it also makes me want to drive too fast). I mention this because on the way home tonight I listened to said station, and then when I got a bit too fed up with the pillock shouting at me to "keep it locked" once too often I flicked over to this CD, and the two just seemed to flow together. As the piano and bass groove of the first and title track here took off, so I found myself tapping out a simplistic version of the Amen break on the steering wheel in accompaniment to the music. So, I sort of enjoyed listening to this music, but in an entirely physical, adrenalin fuelled manner. The way I listened couldn't be further away from how I listen to Diatribes, or very much else of why I usually write about here. I found myself picking out rhythms when they were not explicit in the music, and filling in drum breaks at opportune moments. Once I got home though, made myself a pot of tea, and sat down in a quiet house, so letting the trials of a busy working day catch up with me a bit, I found this CD really hard to listen to again, perhaps in the same way that I could only ever listen to the pirate radio station when driving. This kind of pulse driven, hypnotic flow of music isn't really my cup of tea, and this evening's experiences make think that this is because it takes such a physical connection with the music to really make it do anything for me, rathe than anything particularly cerebral. I'm just not likely to ever be dancing across the living room with to anything at all any time soon. So, if The Necks, Radian and the like are your thing, you will possibly like this one very much. I'll stick to this nice pot of genmaicha for now though." "A third album for Plaistow, a piano-bass-drums trio whose second physical opus The Crow (Unit Records, 2010) was a very fine listen: instrumental music at the crossroads of avant-jazz, Terry Riley-like minimalism, and techno music's insistent rhythms. On Lacrimosa, the band pushes the minimalistic aspect further by choosing long durations, with two 20-minute tracks and that's all. This further highlights Plaistow's similarities (in instrumentation, ideas, and actions) with The Necks. Exhausting and exhilarating music that invites you to loose yourself within its mass, between your admiration for the musicians' virtuosity and your incredulity before such a journey. Solid stuff. The album is available for free download (like all Plaistow releases), but Insubordinations also offers a physical CD." Jean-Paul Gavard-Perret/huffingtonpost.fr/29 mar 2012 *** "(...)The piano also plays a role on the CD by Plaistow, a trio with pianist Johann Bourquenez, electric bass player Raphael Ortis and Cyril Bondi on drums. They got their name from Suqarepusher' 'Plaistow Flex Out', but there is no link to drum & bass, but they are called 'post jazz', which made me raise an eyebrow. But I am reviewing it, so it must be something less jazz? It is. The piano opens up with a repetitive motive which he continues for a long time. Drum and bass slowly walk into the music and from then a very minimal piece of jazz music unfolds for the next nine minutes, which then moves into another part of the same piece. Its the title piece and it lasts almost twenty-three minutes, and its an excellent piece. It slowly unfolds but never really expands or takes a different shape. For me that would have been enough. Steve Reich on a post-jazz roll? The second and last piece, 'Cube' is a more jazz like piece, with the drums playing a much active part, and the piano playing two minimal tones, with the bass in a supporting. Here too the piece is broken up in two parts. The piano continues but we land in a more improvised piece, especially the drums, but coming to back the original tune. Now that's jazz! But certainly jazz owing to post rock and most of all minimal music. Is there more like this? I might become a jazzfan. Whether imagining new forms of techno, minimalism, post-rock/noise or improvised music, all Plaistow's recordings are realized organically with a drum kit, bass and piano. The group met through improv and netaudio communities over five years, and now have several netlabel releases in their growing discography. The latest is on Insubordinations, a netlabel for whom Plaistow's drummer Cyril Bondi organizes concerts. Released this past month under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license, Lacrimosa consists of two fantastically expansive minimalist tracks, and is also available in a limited edition cdr/digisleeve." Dry/NETLABELLIFE (IT)/19 feb 2012 *** "Elegiac and bursting with energy, here's a connection of ECM-style Jazz and experimental Rock music." Sven Swift/swift, thanks. (EN)/2 feb 2012 *** " the duo's subtle distinguishing mark develops out of Bondi's relationship to free jazz and d'incise's relationship to ambient electronica and free improvisation. As environmentally diffused as the sounds may become, Bondi is often knitting at pulse, creating polyrhythms and a momentum that animates the whole, keeping it moving while d'incise pulls sounds from the ether or the street. The spontaneous character of the music is insistently maintained by working constantly with other players, as if Diatribes is only complete when it's Bondi, d'incise and someone else, as if Diatribes is a principle that always includes the other. The duo has recently released three works, each with a third musician; as different as the guests are, Diatribes manages to create a distinct identity. [...] On Complaintes de Marée Basse with the Lisbon-based guitarist Abdul Moimême, the three musicians seem to be much more aligned in their approach. Moimême plays two prepared table-top guitars, metal objects and small instruments, and both he and d'incise have cymbals in their list of instruments. The playful sound sources extend to Moimême playing metronome and d'incise gramophone. At times the sound is almost industrial the scraping of metal, the sound of large objects falling-at others it has the most remarkable delicacy, fragile glissandi and barely audible string scrapings. Identity and perspective are constantly changing here. Little noises arise and are gradually subsumed into louder ones or else disappear like unknown but evidently endangered insects in a distant ecosystem. A snare drum rhythm beats against the scratch of a gramophone needle on an exit groove. The sounds are at times so intimate you feel that you are ear-next to a bowed cymbal or a mallet-struck string; at other times the sonic vocabulary of random echoing metal suggests a freight yard, industrial noise in which sound is only a side effect of another process. It is this shifting perspective, this fluctuating succession of different scales-from closet to airplane hangar-that makes this the remarkable dreamscape that it is." [...] Invisibility, anonymity, and pseudonymity are clearly important here (another Diatribes performance with HKM+ and other German musicians was "recorded in an abandoned building in Leipzig"), for this is music shaped by the acuity of consciousness and the porous frontier of identity, whether of the sound, the instrument or the maker. Watching this music being made might diminish its sonic appeal; living here only in the ear, it elaborates on mysteries of identity which are matters of both cognition and psychology. It's fitting that some of the works themselves inhabit an area both grey and plural, as limited edition works of art or downloads." Stuart Broomer/pointofdeparture.org *** "Tonight I have been listening to another CD involving the Swiss duo Diatribes, who are D'Incise (laptop, assorted bits of percussion and a gramophone) and Cyril Bondi (percussion and objects). On this disc, a release that is also available as a free download on the excellent Insubordinations netlabel here sees them joined by a prepared guitarist named Abdul Moimême, though I suspect that that name may well be a pseudonym. So as you can go and get the music for free anyway, part of me does wonder why I am reviewing it here, but its quite an enjoyable release so here goes anyway. Diatribes have always struck me as belonging firmly in the AMM tradition of improvisation, building their music in a laminal manner, buzzing electronics and metallic, often bowed percussion swelling and subsiding slowly. The addition of the prepared guitars here leads me to think that way even more, as although Moiême's contributions are quite varied, and as cheap and lazy a comparison as it may be, every so often sounds appear (vibrating springs, metal against pick up etc) that remind me of Keith Rowe. Add this to the streams of percussion and its hard not to find the classic AMM sound evoked. To be clear though, this isn't a bad thing at all. There is plenty of depth and variety in this release, which before I forget to tell you is named, Complaintes de marée basse. (Laments of low tide? beautiful if this is the case, and quite fitting) but across the seven tracks there is an underlying sensation of dark, brooding slowness, and that feeling of gathering clouds that was present in so many of the trio AMM albums just before the heavens opened. Complaintes de marée basse has seven tracks though, and so 'the arc' isn't as prevalent here and the pieces build to their little mini climaxes without quite the same sense of grandeur, but the image of low waves washing up on a beach at low tide is certainly a fitting one." Although the guitar stands out in places, its generally quite hard to split the three musicians apart here, but this doesn't matter as listening carefully is all about the blending and collision of the amassed tiny details and textures that are built up to make this music. There is nothing groundbreaking here, and no one element stands out as worth noting above all others, but none of this matters. The music here is a great example of modern electroacoustic free improvisation as it should be done, sounds merging and folding together in one moment, colliding and contrasting the next. Everything progresses gradually, but it does keep progressing, so there is little repetition or any resorting to drones. What more is there to say? Not a great deal really. I played Complaintes de marée basse through four times overall today and it didn't wear thin at all, the detail in the music allowing it to sound different each time as I heard new elements in it on each subsequent spin. The music is available for free, so if you enjoy this area of music (and if you don't, why are you reading this blog?!) then I recommend you download it and take a listen. If its not your cup of tea then you've lost no more than forty-seven minutes of your time, but if you like it, as I suspect you may, then why not click the paypal button at the Insubordinations site and support them by buying a physical copy of the CD." Richard Pinell/the watchfull ear *** "Swiss improvising duo Diatribes offer us another new collaboration, following their memorable team-up with the UK's Barry Guy which resulted in a strong piece of free grumblymusic with some political undertones. On Complaintes De Marèe Basse, Abdul Moimême joins D'Incise and Cyril Bondi to create what they call an "electro-acoustic oriented album". This phrase may refer to the two prepared guitars (hopefully electric, amplified, and strewn with fragments of junk) that Abdul wields like two massive metallic clubs, ready to smite all opponents of liberty and free expression. Better take cover when this sauce-box starts rubbing his poisoned strings, as he seems equipped to summon the force of an electrical storm (in his quiet and brooding way, of course). His gloom-laden thunderclaps sit well with the skittery multiple percussion effects, bowed objects and laptop twitterments from the two Swiss madcaps on these 2009 recordings made in Lisbon." Ed Pinsent/the sound projector *** "Diatribes walks a unique path, between European free improvisation and microsonic experimentation. The duo of D'incise and Cyril Bondi between them are credited, on Complaintes de Mare Basse, with playing laptop, objects, snare drums, bow, cymbals, gramophone, drums, percussions, bow, cymbals, as well as "various instruments." Somehow, despite that plethora of material, they manage to bring a third player into the mix, Abdul Moimême (equally equipped: "two prepared guitars, metalic objects, springs, cymbals, metronome"), and still sound subdued, remote, even tiny at times, all that noisy detail distilled to the point of being nearly silent. Exactly how many free improvisers can you fit on the head of a pin? Perhaps the answer is three. The first track, "Pavillon Noir," is by far the most hectic of the batch, and once the album proceeds past it, all the banging and clanking and scraping gets ratcheted down to the point where it sounds like field recordings of a particularly busy old furnace, especially on "Voile et Vapeur," in which the interplay is at once bleak and fanciful." disquiet.com *** "Obwohl Vieles der Phantasie überlassen bleibt, ist die Begegnung des Genfer Improduos Diatribes mit dem portugiesischen Gitarristen Moimême programmatisch ein Seestück'. Here's the netlabel Insubordinations's second physical release: a collaboration between Swiss duo Diatribes (electronician/percussionist D'Incise and percussionist Cyril Bondi) and Portuguese guitarist Abdul Moimême. Complaintes de marée basse is a very percussive record, since Moimême uses mostly guitar preparations, turning his instrument into a mini-gamelan - combined to Diatribes' percussive manipulations. This record is a little difficult to get into but vivid, with occasionally contradictory interactions (which is not a bad thing). Some will find it lacking diversity, but I actually find its limited sound palette enticing." François Couture/monsieur delire *** "Complaintes de marée basse: sette improvvisazioni caratterizzate da atmosfere sospese, per me piuttosto intriganti ed emozionali." mauro graziani *** "The CD is credited to Diatribes and Phonotopy, which is three people. Diatribes are a Swiss laptop and objects/percussion duo that I have written about before and saw play live last week, Phonotopy is apparently a musician named Yann Leguay, who on this release is credited as playing tennis cythar and electric racket Hmm... Partielle d'Averse, as the disc is titled, is actually a nice little set of crunchy, textural improvisation though, busy and active but not in an old-school improv manner, electroacoustic in feel but with a fair amount of metal and other percussive sound involved. It all feels quite similar to AMM in some ways, a mix of texture and expressive drama but with the three musicians all nicely in tune with one another. Its an engaging affair, quite feisty in its own way, sounds colliding as often as they slip into one another, the musical conversation getting a little heated here and there. For the twenty-three minutes the music keeps you interested, constantly reworking itself and shifting into new patterns, full of energy and never becoming reliant on any sustained sounds as a bed, existing instead as a stream of continual improvised arguments resolved in real time. The spirit and drive of improvisation is at the heart of this music. There is no technical showboating or reliance on either technique or stylish texture, just a recorded moment of shared immediate musical expression. For some this CD might seem a waste of time. As regularly we complain about how much is released, about how quality standards seem to be falling as CDs and downloads get easier to produce, this little disc, full of improvised music by musicians not that widely known outside of their own smaller circles is the kind of thing that is likely to get missed, passed over, held up as an example of how many CDs exist today. I find myself asking what else these musicians are meant to do though? In today's increasingly crowded, but also increasingly fickle experimental CD market there is little that lesser-known musicians can do than try and select the best work they are capable of and present it in as pleasing and accessible manner they can in the hope that their work might become more well known. Diatribes and Phonotopy do just that here by producing a very nice package, that can also be downloaded for free, that contains some very acceptable, often thoroughly pleasing music. Yes there is a lot of music out there, and no, nobody can ever take even half of it in properly, but I personally see the appearance of musicians like the guys in Diatribes, and their subsequent energies and efforts to share their music with a wider audience to be a good sign for our music, evidence that the music can get out there with a reliance on bigger name labels, that the spirit of improvisation is alive and well in more ways than one. So if you have the time, go here and download or buy the music, and if you don't, well then that's fine." [...] Just over 23-minutes long, it's a beautifully sustained single piece, Leguay's transformed sports equipment a perfect complement to Bondi and d'incise. Invisibility, anonymity, pseudonymity are clearly important here, for this is music shaped by the acuity of consciousness and the porous frontier of identity, whether of the sound, the instrument or the maker. Yann Leguay (Phonotopy) plays a "tennis cythar" and the "electric racket", hopefully home-made instruments which seem to be two halves of an oblique whole occupying undefined turf midway between a sports gear shop and the heavy metal arena. Some 23 minutes of very busy activity, dominated by rather shapeless and scrapey doodling. Stay with it though, as this grumbly pattero-language from a microscopic dimension eventually starts to make sense in a broken, halting way." the sound projector *** "They did it again, the duo Diatribes (d'incise and Cyril Bondi) from switzerland created a anarchistic free-jazz piece of music with Phonotopy. No melodic moments, just sounds, rhythm, atmosphere and especially a lot of abstraction, as far as I can say, that is one of the marks of Diatribes. Phonotopy is a project of Yann Leguay from France who experiments a lot of with sound, space and self-built instruments and has the same free mind as the musicians of Diatribes. The piece starts slow, but as soon as possible the musicians starts to communicate and act as maniacs and produce sounds without interruption and they differ the speed and intensity of sounds. The combination between a traditional drumset, objects, laptop selfbuilt-instruments, like an electric racket and a tennis sitar is well-chosen. The piece ends in a quiet and meditative mood, but gets disturbed by high feed -backtones and other noisy sounds. Partielle d'Averse is an explosion of short sounds, incalculable and as free as possible. Rui Eduardo Paes/jazz.pt *** "UK improvising double bass player of no small stature Barry Guy lends his considerable skills to the Diatribes team, a Swiss duo comprising drummer Cyril Bondi and D'Incise with his laptop and objects. On Multitude (CAVE12 ORCHESTRA C12 O 01), joined on one track by the clarinet of Benoit Moreau, the group produce some quite startling effects as they mine their way into each episode with an insistent, nagging approach. Drummer Bondi is on particularly good harrowing form on these January 2009 sessions, while bassist Guy's skill is in quietly concealing his enormous talent behind phrases of understated economy and grace. But listen closely to what he's doing and you'll find he packs more musical content and energy into ten seconds of bass sawing than you or I could carry inside a lunchb Christian Steulet - Le Courrier - 26 juin 2010 *** "Cave 12 und das Diatribes-Duo D'Incise (laptop, objects) & Cyril Bondi (drums, percussions) gehören nach Geneva, ihre Begegnung mit dem Kontrabass von Barry Guy ins Forschungsgebiet der elektro-akustischen Improvisation. Here's a mighty fine trio. The press release labels them as "post-jazz" and, well, it sticks. Piano, bass, drums, from Switzerland, an avant-jazz basis, a strong post-rock influence, a bass leaning toward doom metal. In the quiet tracks, I hear Bohren und der Club of Gore (especially in the lengthy "Boomerang" that disintegrates halfway through). In the upbeat tracks, I hear... what am I hearing, actually? Satoko Fujii? With a hint of Pago Libre? Hard to tell, but it's nicely melodious while remaining relevant. A rather easy listen, although jazz fans will be confused. And fans of confusion (yes, like myself) will be satisfied." Naizgled klasican klavirski dzez trio jos jednom je ponudio svezu, uzbudljivu i raznoliku muziku kakve se ne bi postideli ni iskusniji muzicari srodne orijentacije, uspevsi da minimalnim sredstvima ostvari maksimalni efekat." www.jazzin.rs - 13 apr 2010 *** Plaistow is the reason I love netlabels, netlabels may be abundant on the net and very easy fo an artist to set up, good ones present some of the best and honest music you'll find anywhere. Case in point, insubordinations.net, a netlabel devoted to improvised music, their new release is a 2009 recording by Geneva's very own Plaistow. (...) Plaistow's music is at times very minimal and other times very bombastic, composed and/or improvised, melodic vs. noise. Cyril Bondi is definitely one of the most underrated drummers playing in music today. His playing can be light when playing little flourishes on the cymbals as in "Doppleganger" or full on as in "Full CSS". "Boomerang" is my favorite track on "The Crow", for it's a song hard to describe. Space and silence are two instruments that really should be added to their musicians list, they play as an important part to Plaistow's music as each of the other individual performers, best heard on this track. Johann Bourquenez channels John Cage in his piano work and at times offers up some bizarre Turkish melody. CB's drums creates a certain tension with his sparse drumming that I found myself cringing at every cymbal hit, awaiting the next. Raphael Ortis' bass is a great low end compliment to the music, like in "Mairie des Lilas". At times one feels like this album isn't finished, like they didn't know where to end and ultimately cut some thoughts short of being completed until you listen to the album more than once and its entirety. It's good played in parts or on shuffle but is better played as a whole. It's simple, if you like improvised music, free jazz, minimalism, or rock download this or any other Plaistow album. Also, check out all the other releases on insubordinations.net. theowlandtheoctopus.blogspot.com - 10 apr 2010 *** "For a long time in my life I've had really problems to listen to jazz music, especially the very free, improvised forms. That changed when I discovered the Insubordinations netlabel from Switzerland, where you can find extra-ordinary releases on exactly this field. And of course my musical taste also changed in that period, so that all comes together. Now I'm really happy to present you a very, very fine piece of improvised music, made by HKM+ and diatribes together with Piero SK, Robert Rehnig and Johannes Sienknecht. HKM+ is an ensemble for electroacoustic improvisation which consists of Ludger Hennig (software instruments), Christof Knoche (bass clarinet / electronics) and Markus Markowski (prepared guitar/ software instruments). diatribes were a trio in the beginning and changed now to a polymorphous formation, accuratly incomplete, extending its spectrum with guest musicians. These eight people meet last year in an abandonned building in Leipzig and recorded a big bunch of material, which finally became this wonderful 50-minute release. It is raw, acoustic (even if there are software elements in it) and free. In my ears the acoustic, organic element is the best part in this release. You can always feel the instruments, the movement and the creative space, created by the whole group." Christian Roth / Resting Bell *** "If only there were a thin line between electronic music and European free improvisation. Instead, there's more of thick, broad line - a gulf at times, really - between digitally processed music and the rich culture of abstract ensemble play. It's a gulf occasionally, and increasingly, bridged by individuals like Ikue Mori and bands like Diatribes. The latter, consisting of d'incise (laptop & treatments, objects, percussions) and Cyril Bondi (drums, percussions), recently teamed up with the trio HKM+ (Ludger Hennig: laptop & software instruments; Christof Knoche: bass clarinet, live electronics; and Markus Markowski: prepared guitar, laptop & software instruments) and three other musicians: Piero SK (saxophones, metal clarinet), Robert Rehnig (laptop & software instruments), and Johannes Sienknecht (laptop & software instruments). The result is spectacular. At times, it's spectacular simply because it's exactly what such a teaming, what such a confluence, should sound like: hi-hats against droning synth tones, lightly brushed guitar chords against sharp textures, mouthy woodwind vibrations that seem to bleed into light static. That's the core of "1000 Bornes", the second cut on the album that resulted from this collaboration (released by the netlabel restingbell.net). Despite the large number of players, it rarely sounds like more than two or three people are going at it at any given time, except perhaps in the densest, most roiling moments of "Randeisen". The sound is almost aways hushed, but not reverential, chaotic, but at the lowest imaginable simmer. The real highlights are when that simmer leads to evaporation, as on the vapor trail that is "Stromamt & Neige Improbable", all glottal sax and cymbals that act like drone machines, and the opening track, "Luftfurche", which somehow manages to be insectoid and elegiac, jittery and mournful, at once. Get the full release, which includes two tracks in addition to the four featured here, at restingbell.net." Marc Weidenbaum/disquiet *** "[...]It could have been a mess without any structure and going wild into nothing. But that doesn't happen. The musicians listen very close to each other and they are building up fragile walls of sound and afterwards it is time for demolition of this wall. The atmosphere of the release is pure, calm, open, quick, silent, slow, harsh, wild and many more. Sometimes it is just free-jazz, sometimes it is just improvisation of sound, sometimes it is funny, sometimes it is melancholic. Anyhow it is organic." Some good news is coming from Switzerland though. Plaistow is a young band, with Johann Bourquenez on piano, Raphaël Ortis on bass and Cyril Bondi on drums. Like E.S.T. they integrate elements from rock music in their jazz, which gives the music a very young and modern flavor, and they add a dose of madness and chaos that the late Esbjörn Svensson did not have. These guys go for it. They do what they like. True, some of the shifts are quite sudden, and it does not always sound very coordinated, but these are just minor ailments compared to their drive and innovative power. The record has a DVD with it, on which Michel Wintsch of the WHO Trio joins on piano, together with Cyril Moulas on bass and Nicolas Field on drums. Viva La Musica - Nicolas Lambert - jan 2010 *** Fabrice Gotraux - La Tribune de Genève - 19 décembre 2009 *** "A Respigador - possible english translation: Harvester - is usually the person who drives or operates the machine with the same name. A harvesting machine used to harvest wheat and other cereals from the fields. So, the title of this new collaboration work between swiss musicians Laurent Peter (a.k.a. d'incise) and Cyril Bondi - both known as Diatribes - and Paulo Curado and Joao Pedro Viegas (two local jazz musicians and improvisators) is about the travessia (crossover) of some respigadores. Crossing over what? And who are these respigadores and where are they going to (and coming from)? Perhaps they are Laurent and Cyril, because respigadores are also the people that scavenge stuff that others don't want anymore, turning them into usable objects, like perhaps sound-producing objects, musical objects. Diatribes use them frequently in their albums and live performances, granting the music they make something that goes beyond human performance and instrument manipulation, musically speaking. In its core, 'Travessia dos Respigadores' is an amazing work of the Freejazz/Experimentation kind. Of totally improvisational nature, the pieces that the four musicians cooked here, simmer together in an enormous range of textures and smells, like a good satisfying meal does. Diatribes operate laptop, found objects (d'incise) and drums (Cyril), with complete passion and mastery. The selfcontained tension that Cyril operates into his set of drums is palpable, we can almost taste the sweat coming out of his forehead when he bashes violently the metal and leather of his weapon of choice. Paulo Curado (saxophone) and Joao Pedro Viegas (bass clarinet) complete the whole setup beautifully. They are both well experimented musicians and can tap into the tension which this kind of performances operates, bringing all the chaos together, augmenting or diminishing it as they see fit. At the best moments, 'Travessia dos Respigadores' shows off all four musicians fusing together into a single sound-delivering force. A massive force to be reckoned with. Like a giant, well balanced punch in the teeth, that will make you see the stars, the bells and the little birds flying around your head." Not your parents' piano duos, these prime slabs of first-class improv should banish any memories of the achievements of Albert Ammons & Pete Johnson, Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington or even Jaki Byard & Howard Riley. Moving one step beyond the Jazz and Free Jazz of these earlier keyboard meetings, the Swiss-French recital featuring Jacques Demierre and Johann Bourquenez utilize so many extended techniques and unique string-and-key variants in their joint narratives that at times the pure piano-ness of the instrument almost vanishes into abstraction. Additionally the polyphonic textures supplied by drummer Cyril Bondi and electronic treatment from D'incise on Piano(s), become as much part of the interface with the pianos as they exist on their own. Appropriately reflecting the parenthetical title of Piano(s), that CD's two most evocative tracks, "Tornade" and "Sous l'écorce", demonstrate how the deconstructed interface Geneva-based D'incise and Bondi have developed since 2004 alters when merged with the strokes and slides of the two pianists. Demierre on his own is their foil on the three remaining tracks. More to the point, it's a tribute to Besançon, France-born Bourquenez, who is approximately two decades younger than Demierre, that the wide-ranging and multiphonic interface with the others doesn't suffer - or honestly sound that much different - when he's the only keyboardist featured. And Demierre is a tough act to follow since the Swiss stylist is as comfortable working in notated music as improvisation; and creating soundscapes and installation as he is adding his voice to other sound experimenters such as saxophonist Urs Leimgruber and clarinetist/vocalist Isabelle Duthoit. A creative connectivity is showcased on Piano(s). As a matter-of-fact when the first track runs into the second or the penultimate joins the final one, it's impossible to determine that one piano has left the narrative. Perhaps the only clues arrive during those rare moments when sequences of highclassical, fantasia-like note cascades result from the intersection of 166 keys. Other than that, the staccato portamento runs or doubled connective glissandi could come from either pianist - or both. While piano fireworks are on show, Bondi rolls, ruffs and pops different parts of his kit or accents the melodies with struts and slams. Plus the occasional wave-form flutter from D'incise makes its presence felt. Overall the sul tasto string sawing, strummed chords and understated key tinkles make the five tracks speed by, with the entire session blending into artful sound layering. More than piano duos, this CD is united in offering notable group creation. Roderic Mounir/le courrier *** "The release counts five tracks, all of them recorded live in Geneva and Lausanne in 2008. Piano's dominate the sound in the opening track 'Tornade' with a Cecil Taylor-like tsunami of clusters. Also reminding of the last work of that other swiss combination Steamboat Switzerland. In the second piece this exuberance is gone. In 'Chants Evades' the drums make up the building force accompanied with very controlled pianowork. 'Et puis partir' is more of a sound exploration consisting of short runs on piano and drums, and functional laptop work by D'Incise. The last two tracks are Satie-esque subtile improvisations that reveals the romantic side of these musicians. To conclude, it illustrate that Geneva is a very fruitful place to be now for improvised music. " DM/vital weekly *** "Diatribes mixes percussion, piano, and software in the interest of sonic exploration. As heard on their recent Insubordinations netlabel release, they take an approach firmly rooted in the clanky, fluid, theoretically rigorous yet sonically elastic techniques of European free improvisation. Witness Cyril Bondi (drums, percussions) and D'Incise (laptop, objects) mixing it up with pianist Jacques Demierre and Johann Bourquenez: "Chants évadés" is all fragmented pianism and roundthe-outside drumming, but shot through with wavering synthesized sound, a groggy drone that holds the whole thing together. "Et Puis Partir," in contrast, is more willfully haphazard, less about anything closely approximating song, and more a matter of noise for its own intrinsic sake, each instrumentalist locating small sounds, from hazy upper-register playing by Demierre, to tribal taunts from Bondi. The introduction of D'Incise's laptop into the sound world of free improv makes perfect sense, given free improvisations ever-present focus on using familiar instruments to make all manner of unfamiliar noises. The laptop expands that palette considerably, and at no point in these sets stands out as inappropriate or jarring." Marc Weidenbaum/disquiet.com ***
