Many students in the Secondary school are now very busy completing assessment tasks. Parents/carers please check the Secondary ‘Assessment Calendar’ emailed out on Monday 8th February and discuss with your child ways of managing their time to complete the tasks. IMPORTANT DATES 3-29 March French Film Festival 7 March 17.15 Board Meeting 9 March 15.30 Reconciliation Action Plan Committee Meeting 10 March 10 March Primary Cross Country Carnival – Years 2-6 15.30 School Improvement Committee Meeting 16 March Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp On Friday 19 February the renowned French 16 March 15.30 Gifted and Talented Committee Meeting author, Erik Orsenna visited the school. The visit was a success with more than 130 students and community members attending. There was a strong message from the author to the younger generation about the power of words. The French Film Festival starts next week, Monday 7 March with our partner, Alliance Française. This is an excellent opportunity for our community to engage with French culture. Our students from Year 6 to Year 10 will also have the opportunity to participate with the screening of ‘April and the extraordinary world’. On Tuesday 23 February, Contact Group teachers from Year 8 and Year 9 met with parents/carers to explain their role and student responsibilities and made positive connections with the families that attended. Thank you to the parents/carers who came to meet the Contact Group teacher. If you have concerns about your child please contact the ‘Contact Group teacher. The Secondary School students from Year 8, 9, 10 School Bands attended the Canberra Show on Friday 26 February and performed a one hour lunchtime concert at Central Park. Thank you to students, parents/carers and Mr Rob Clements for supporting the school and the Canberra community. On 9 March our Principal, Kerrie Blain (in Canberra) together with our Proviseur, Emmanuel Texier (in Bangkok) will officially launch the web radio of the Asia Pacific region which will be based in our school. On this occasion our Year 8 students will be interviewing from Canberra the Deputy Director of AEFE, Jean Paul Négrel who will be in Bangkok. This is not only an amazing technical achievement but also an excellent opportunity for our students to be even more open to a global world. The ‘Bring your own device’ (BYOD) is now up and running in the Secondary School. All students who have a device are asked to bring this device to school each day. Parents please see the information on the School website that gives details of device specifications if you are unsure about which device to buy for your child. The school has a small number of devices that students can use at school if they do not have their own device. We apologise to students and parents/carers about the difficulty Year 7 students are having logging onto the school network. There are a number of issues that have caused this delay. On Wednesday 2 March, all Year 7 students received written instructions on how to log onto the network. Some student Google accounts haven’t yet been activated by Google and this is also causing a delay. Information is now in all classes instructing students how to access the wireless network at school. When students access their Gmail account through their SchoolsNet account they should receive a welcome email to access ManageBac. Students need to follow the instructions from ManageBac to set their password. Michele McLoughlin Deputy Principal Years 7-10, International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Coordinator. Cordialement, Aminah Kazak, EALD _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Information Technology - Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) By Tom Spollard Introduction Telopea Park School has formalised BYOD into its teaching and learning platform. This does not mean a step away from traditional classroom practices, but rather a refocusing in the way that we use technology as a tool. Previously, classes would book a set of computers or a computer lab for a specific task such as a research assignment. Digital devices now allow teachers/students to step in and step out of technology as required for potentially all lessons rather than as a specific add-on for a designated activity. The need for connectivity will become more evident as publish houses turn away from printing hard copy text books and move towards digital text book subscriptions. A major theme of BYOD is user device consistency and fluidity. We now have a Wi-Fi network that is able to support each year 6 to year 10 student to use their own device by connecting through the school's network. Page 3 of 14 Device Requirements The school's device of choice is a Chromebook, which can be purchased for around $400. However, as a mixed BYOD model school, students may use a personal device of choice provided that each device complies within the following guidelines: minimum 10" screen six hour battery charge easy Wi-Fi connectivity and a touch type keyboard. Device Security Please note that the school does not take responsibility for the security of student devices. This includes theft and breakage. School lockers are available for device storage. Accessing the schools Wi-Fi and connecting to the ACT Education Directorate's network The BYOD program will run in alignment with the ACT Education Directorate (ACTED) and Telopea Park School's Acceptable Use ICT Agreement. Parental/carer consent is required to create a school account, and to access Google Apps for Education (GAFE) and Microsoft Office 365. These consent forms are available via the front office on 6142 3388. Purchase Program Chromebook's are becoming increasingly difficult to purchase over-the-counter. The school is currently negotiating an online purchase option with three major providers. This will allow parents/carers to buy a limited number of devices online. This information will be made available once agreements have been confirmed. The school will not take responsibility for the negotiation and/or delivery of devices. Acquisition options will be made available through each portal and may differ between providers. Activating Student Accounts The following links will take you to a document and video which explains how to activate your ACTED GAFE and Microsoft Office 365 Account. This is required in order to use the Directorate's Google platform (GAFE). Personal Gmail accounts are not to be used for Internet access as these platforms do not offer the same level of security as the ACTED GAFE platform. This year sees a number of new teachers joining the school, including a welcome back to Danielle Olney – Art (previously Northey), a welcome to Bronwyn Palaskas (Textiles and Food Technology) and Bryce Anderson (PE and Food Technology). On leave are teachers Bev Carroll and Tanya Phillips. Curriculum A curriculum review and rewrite has been undertaken for year 7 and year 8 Arts and Design Technology subjects. Year 7 courses have now been extended from a one term course to a semester long course. Further, the upgrade of our ceramics facilities and resources will see the inclusion of this art form into Telopea's Visual Arts courses. This will enrich and extend the repertoire of practical learning skills available to students. Teacher Reports Visual Art By Danielle Olney (Northey) It’s wonderful to be back. I’m looking forward to engaging my students in the exciting world of Visual Arts and helping guide them to see all artistic possibilities of what they can achieve. Over the next year, students will have the opportunity to enter into competitions such as Black and White and Limelight, exhibitions of their work. We will have: special guests that will inspire; excursions to explore the available resources around Canberra; and, the introduction to new materials and all of their possibilities. This is only a short list of the amazing things we will be achieving in Visual Arts. We hope to start creating a ceramic Page 4 of 14 working space and using the kiln on a regular basis, thereby establishing ceramics in the school. I look forward to working with students and exhibiting their fabulous work around the school. Food Design By Bryce Anderson Student’s in Food Design classes have been designing and entering cakes for the Canberra Show cookery competitions. Congratulations go to students in year 8 Food Design class who entered Iced Patty Cakes (not cooked in paper). Min Seo Page in Year 8 was awarded an Highly Commended award for her efforts. The Year 9/10 Cake Biscuits & Slices class produced high quality Tea Cakes (Cinnamon Topping)for the show. Zoe Ramshaw was awarded second prize and $5.00 for her efforts. It is encouraging to watch the students’ love of baking grow with each new task. Creative Textiles, Fabric and Jewellery By Bronwyn Palaskas Senior Costume Jewellery will be taking an excursion to Marrickville, Sydney on Tuesday, 8 March to sample, select and purchase material for their major works. Students will visit the home of Reverse Garbage, which is committed to diverting resources from landfill. Their impact is significant as each year this organisation processes approximately 35,000 cubic metres or 100 football fields of waste. In 1974, a group of teachers decided to commit to reducing environmental waste by diverting industrial discard and repurposing this material as a teaching and learning resource for classrooms. 40 years later, Reverse Garbage is now an internationally recognised, award winning environmental co-operative that has an international reputation for promoting sustainability through the reuse of resources. I look forward to seeing what inspirational work flows from this unique experience. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ TPS BAND CALENDAR DATES – SEMESTER 1 2016 As at 29/1/16 Sydney Tour – Thursday 15th Sep – Sat 17th Sep 2016 TBC Thur 3 March (after school) - Sat 5 March – Jazz Retreat at Burrinjuck Sat March 19 – Year 7 bands and Jazz Band at Narrabundah Festival TBC (12.30 performance) Thur 5 May – Sat 7 May – Band Camp TBC - all band members. BAND NEWS The bands have already survived Boot Camp! On Tuesday 16 Feb our indomitable 70-piece Wind Ensemble participated in a full day of playing music and eating pizza. A massive repertoire of music was covered for the Canberra Show performance on Friday 26 Feb, AND a new band world record of 30 pizzas was devoured. (Eclipsing the previous record set by the Jazz band of 20 pizzas at the eisteddfod in 2014). The year 7 bands are powering through a new chart each rehearsal and are ready to take on the world right now – a great achievement by our youngest members to have so much repertoire at standard prior to year 7 camp. The Jazz Band will be off to Burrinjuck on Thursday 5 March for a jazz retreat. We will be performing a public concert at 12.30pm on Saturday 7 March at the Burrinjuck foreshore picnic area which we are really looking forward to. Parents are welcome to attend – it is a terrific day out. If you haven’t been to Burrinjuck before, it is well worth the visit. Parents of band members have the daily entry rate waived. The 2016 Sydney trip is coming up in September and we are already booked in to play at the amazing Jenolan Caves as well as seeing My Fair Lady at the Opera House – a rare treat to be able to hear Sydney’s top pro muso’s at work! The France trip for 2017 is well underway. We are still awaiting clearance from DFAT, and our itinerary is coming together well; there will be a homestay element on tour (so we are going to have to brush up on our French!) A professional writer has been advising us on a musical presentation we are developing telling the Lost Digger’s story and we have commissioned a local professional composer to write some music especially for our band to take to our French (and Flemish) friends in VillersBretonneaux, Vignacourt and Belgium. Many thanks to the Telopea P & C for making this amazing project happen! The centenary of the infamous Passchaendale Offensive/s will take place in Sep / Oct 2017 and Telopea will be front and centre in some quite significant regional commemorations representing Australia in some unique community performances. There will be a World Premiere of the new works at a concert in term four this year here right at Telopea… watch this space! An exciting year!! PRIMARY NEWS The students have settled well in to the school routines and we are very happy to see so many happy, smiling faces in the classrooms and corridors. Drop-Off and Pick-Up Zones/Staff Car Park Safety of students, parents and staff is an extremely high priority for us. When using the Drop-Off and Pick-Up Zones, please note that these are not parking areas and that traffic should flow smoothly and safely through those zones. Please observe the signs in the Staff Car Park near the School Hall. This area is for staff parking only and should not be used as a drop-off area. Thank you for supporting us in keeping all members of our school community safe. School Hours The school hours are from 9.00 a.m. until 3.15 p.m. each day, and supervision begins at 8.30 a.m. each morning. If you need to bring your child to school any earlier than 8.30am, it is most important that they be enrolled in the Before School Care Program for their safety. Please do not send students through the front doors of the school before 8.30 a.m. as teachers are preparing in their classrooms and are unable to provide supervision. It is important that students arrive at school on time and that they remain at school for the whole school day; except if they have a medical or other significant appointment. If your child attends other activities such as music lessons, dance or sports, please avoid allowing these activities to encroach on school hours. Less disruption to the school day is beneficial for all students and teachers and we thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Lost Property Page 6 of 14 In order to avoid a build-up of lost items in Lost Property, please ensure all items are clearly marked with your child’s full name before they come to school. We encourage regular checking of Lost Property to claim items belonging to your child/ren. Please support us by encouraging your child to take good care of their belongings. Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS)- Kindergarten students only PIPS testing is carried out with all students in Kindergarten two times each year; during Term 1 and Term 4. This term, PIPS testing began in Week 3 and was completed this week. Reports will be sent home to parents of Kindergarten students at the end of Term 1 or early Term 2. Please refer to the brochures sent home with the Kindergarten students two weeks ago. P&C Primary Francophonie Breakfast To commemorate Francophonie Week, our hard-working P&C is holding one of their world famous breakfasts on Wednesday 23 March. They are looking for more volunteers to help them to run this valuable community event; which has always been a huge success in the past. If you are able to spare some time to support them, please contact them as soon as possible. Their contact details may be found within this Telopea Topics newsletter. Encouraging Independence Our Kindergarten students have settled so well into the routine of ‘big school’, that we would like to encourage them to become more independent. This is also true for our older students in years 1 to 6. Therefore, we encourage parents to leave their children at the inside of the relevant gate (Kindergarten or Quad gate), and to allow them to carry their bags into the playground themselves. As teachers must be ready to begin work promptly at 9.00am, this will allow us to lock the gates as soon as the bell rings. We are most grateful for your support. Year 5 Camp Our happy year 5 campers set off on an adventure to Longbeach on Wednesday 2 March. They had three days of fun-filled activities and learning opportunities. We welcomed them home on Friday 4 March. The accompanying teachers; Cathy Marot, Susan Lewis, Vincent Boutraud and Sada Ramsamy did not have much sleep for those two nights! Please thank the teachers when they take your children to camps and bring them home safely. Camps are an extra commitment that teachers accept to allow students different opportunities to build team work, various skills and to enrich their learning. The teachers do not receive extra payment for taking overnight excursions and willingly give up time with their own families to look after our students. Some dates for your calendars To assist with planning, please note the following dates for this term, and week 1 of Term 2. Please look out for further information in the coming weeks: Date/Week Event Students involved Year 2 Excursion to National Gallery of Australia- Tom Roberts Art Exhibition Year 2 students only Week 6: Monday 7 March Thursday 10 March Friday 11 March Cross-Country Carnival French Film Festival Students in years 2,3,4,5 and 6 Year 6 students only Week 7: Monday 14 March Canberra Day Holiday All students Monday 21 March Harmony Day All students Monday 21 to Tuesday 22 March Year 3 camp Year 3 students only Wednesday 23 March P&C Primary Francophonie Breakfast All students and parents Week 8: Page 7 of 14 Thursday 24 March Term 1 Progress Check reports go home Friday 25 March All students All students Good Friday public holiday Week 9: Monday 28 March Easter Monday public holiday All students Wednesday 30 March Primary Parent-Teacher interviews All parents and teachers Thursday 31 March Primary Parent-Teacher interviews All parents and teachers Week 10: Monday 4 April Wednesday 6 April Friday 8 April Friday 8 April Primary Parent-Teacher interviews Performance: “Bullying” ‘Carnaval’ at French Australian Pre-School Last day of Term 1 All parents and teachers All students Kindergarten students only All students TERM TWO Week 1: Monday 25 April ANZAC Day public holiday All students Tuesday 26 April First Day of Term 2 All students Wednesday 27 April Kindergarten 2017 Information Session Parents of students wishing to apply for Kindergarten 2017 Until next time, Kathy Solomko Executive Teacher K-2 NOUVELLES DU PRIMAIRE Les élèves ont déjà pris de bonnes habitudes à l’école et nous nous réjouissons de voir tant de visages heureux et souriants dans les classes et les couloirs. This position would be ideal for someone looking for a little bit of minor paid work during school hours. About the job: The Uniform Shop is contracted out to Pickles Schoolwear, based in Sydney. Therefore this is a casual part-time position as an employee of Pickles. The pay is about $18 per hour and it’s located on the school premises. The position involves using a laptop-based POS system that is fairly straightforward to use. While previous retail experience is an asset, it isn’t Page 11 of 14 essential. You just need to be friendly and helpful to Telopea parents, carers and students. Business Hours: The busy period is the week before school starts (last week of January) and the first week of Term 1. Usually 2 or 3 people are required for this period. Normal hours are 3 hours per week (Mon 8.30-9.30, Tues 2.45-3.45, Thurs 11.0012.00) but these could be negotiated. Only one person is required, but it is best to have a second person on call in case of illness or emergencies. Towards the end of the year, the Uniform Shop has a stall at the Fete (first weekend in November) and it always opens when the school holds its Kindergarten orientation days (4 half-days usually in the last week of November). 2 or 3 people would be best for these two periods. Ursula and Andrew will provide handover training for the new starter. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE IT WOULD SUIT YOU? On these occasions drivers will ask students to remain on the bus until the replacement bus arrives. This may result in some delay but it is a much safer option than children leaving the bus. Parents may wish to remind their son or daughter to ensure they stay on the bus on these occasions. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Time for volunteers and visitors to renew their WWVP registration Parents and other adults who volunteer, or work in some paid capacity, at school are required under the Working With Vulnerable People Act to be registered with Access Canberra. There are however some exemptions. Those who registered in 2013 will need to apply to renew their registration during 2016. If your card is over three years old it has probably expired and you cannot lawfully have contact with children as a volunteer or visitor in a school-related activity. If you are uncertain, you should contact Access Canberra on 13 2281 or accesscanberra.act.gov.au, or in person at an ACT Government shopfront. If you think you may be exempt under the Act, you should contact the school. Registration for (unpaid) volunteers is free. Registration for employees and paid visitors is $76 for three years. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONNECT AND PARTICIPATE EXPO Looking for something exciting and fun to do with the kids?
