Course Description
An introduction to French applied linguistics, phonetics, and linguistic theory. First part analyzes
phonological and phonetic patterns of French. Second part deals with selected morphological
and syntactic figures of French. Concentration on pronunciation and on structures of the French
language. Introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet. Brief survey of the history of the
French language. Class taught in French. Includes some lab work. Prereq: 3000-level French.
Text and assignments
This course offers a broad survey of linguistics, history of language, and phonetics topics.
Activities are varied often, from practical practice in pronunciation, to learning different
linguistic terms and theories, to exploring current accents and dialects of the francophone world-using authentic materials with everything from poetry, to text messaging, to newscasts, to music.
- Textbook: Dansereau. SAVOIR DIRE 2006. Available in lab, but will usually need in class.

-A dictionary that includes phonetic pronunciation symbols is useful.
-Recordings / les enregistrements: You may submit them on CDROM or by the beginning of
class by emailing an MP3 to instructor. You may need 2 blank enregistrement tapes or an RWCD (or MP3) to record your voice to turn in to me for homework and for a final assignment.
You may also duplicate the CDs that go with the book IF you wish (RW best) so you can use
them at home instead of in lab. Required lab CDs that go with the textbook will be available for
duplication in the language lab after Jan 16th (Lab in Old Main downstairs near my office).
Expectations
Good attendance, voluntary participation in class, pronunciation practice, and group exercises, as
well as a positive attitude and willingness to make an effort are essential for success in this class
and in improving in French. Please speak French in class. Don’t be afraid to speak up; you will
learn from your mistakes. Raise your hand and try. Preparation, practice, and progress count.
Do not hesitate to email the instructor with any questions or concerns. Details and materials for
assignments and exams will be given in class. More than three unexcused absences will drop
your grade (e.g., A- to a B+). Academic Honesty/ USU “Honor System” must be followed:

own voice and all your own work on homework and exams. For quizzes, you will be responsible
for knowing material in the lectures, assigned sections of the book, and handouts. No final exam.
*Graduate students completing split-enrollment 6200 have additional required final assignment.
