OGILVY Mot de la presidente d'honneur En 1990, a la suite d'une therapie de
cinq ans dans un monastere, j'ai pris
une decision: je voulais faire quelque
chose de nouveau. Alors j'ai choisi un
domaine ou je n'etais pas bonne a
I'ecole mais que j'adorais... J'ai
commence a prendre des cours de
peinture.
Mes premieres le~ons furent tres difficiles. Je ne comprenais pas ce
que Ie professeur m'expliquait. Apres quelques semaines et une
bouteille d'Aspirin, mon «Troisieme <Iii)) s'est ouvert. Quelle joie, quel
bonheur! Je crois que ce fut rna naissance en Arts! Par la suite, j'ai
eu cette chance d'etudier avec Ie grand maitre Daniel Greene, que j'ai
meme re~u a la maison avec sa jeune femme, qui attendait un enfant
a I'epoque. Je dois avouer que je suis un peu maniaque, j'ai a la
maison au-dela de 5 000 pastels ...
Je suis honoree d'etre presidente d'honneur de cette exposition et je
vous encourage tous a devenir des amoureux de I'art. Encouragez les
artistes en achetant vos toiles favorites. Vous allez non seulement les
rendre heureux, mais par Ie fait meme, aider ces femmes battues et
ces enfants dont on abuse, par Ie biais de la ~ondation Ginette Reno,
a laquelle les artistes verseront genereusement 20 % des profits de
la vente des tableaux.

In 1990, after a five-year therapy in a monastery, I wanted to start
something new. So I started something that I was very bad at school,
but I always loved so much. I started to learn how to paint.
My first lessons were very difficult as I could not see what the teacher
was referring to. After a few weeks and a bottle of Aspirin, my "Third
Eye" opened. What a joy it was, what happiness ! I believe I was born
to Arts. I also attended a workshop with world renowned pastelist,
Daniel Greene, who visited my home with his beautiful wife who was
expecting at the time. I must confess that I'm a pastel freak ... 1have
at least 5,000 pastels at home.
I am deeply honored to have been chosen Honorary President of
this exhibition and I encourage all of you to become art lovers. In
buying your favorite paintings, you will not only make the artists
happy but you will also be contributing to the Foundation Ginette
Reno. The artists are generously donating 20% of the profits from
sales to the foundation, which comes to the aid of battered women
and abused children.

La renaissance de l'Art du Pastel s'est amorcee il y a quelques annees,
mais nous vivons actuellement un regain d'interet certain pour I'art
subtil de sculpter Ie pigment.
Pour repondre it cet intere~ it cet enthousiasme, nous nous devons
de presenter it un large public dans differents pays, des a!uvres
professionnelles aussi diverses que possible, de transmettre un savoir
faire de qualite, d'apporter notre attention et notre soutien aux jeunes talents, et de
promouvoir les pastellistes sans lesquels Ie pastel ne pourrait etre promu.
De nombreuses organisations it travers Ie monde oeuvrent it cette mission mais Ie partenariat
que nous avons developpe les unes avec les autres, tel celui entre la «Societe de Pastel de
l'Est du Canada» et {(Art du Pastel en France)) permettra aux artistes une reconnaissance
professionnelle et internationale de leurs a!uvres, une part de marche plus importante pour la
diffusion et la vente de celies-ci.
Exposer ensemble, enseigner et peindre ensemble dans differents pays, pouvoir partager nos
projets, c'est contribuer de fa~on concrete et active it I'enrichissement d'un patrimoine artistique
qui nous a ete laisse en heritage il y a bien longtemps et dont nous apprecions la valeur.

Cest avec grand enthousiasme que nous ouvrons
les partes de la salle Tudor a la I"' Exposition
Internationale de la Societe de Pastel de l'Est du
Canada, qui celebre cette annee son I()' anniver­
saire de fondation. Depuis 1998, Ogilvy soutient
PSEC en accueillant I'exposition selectionnee des
membres qui a lieu en novembre de chaque
annee. le medium du pastel sec compte de plus
en plus d'adeptes et sa diffusion merite d'etre
soutenue par de fideles partenaires.
Depuis sa creation, il y a plus de 130 ans, la
Maison Ogilvy s'est employee a promouvoir I'art
et la culture a Montreal. Chaque annee, nous
participons a plus d'une centaine d'activites de
bienfaisance ou communautaires et cette exposi­
tion cadre parlaitement avec nos objectifs. Hous
sommes fiers de pouvoir soutenir, par la meme
occasion, la Fondation Ginette Reno qui parraine
cet evenement et ,'est un grand honneur de
pouvoir accueillir madame Reno chez nous.
Bienvenue a taus les exposants de France, des
Etats·Unis et de Pologne. le cachet internation­

Renaissance of the Art of Pastel began a few years ago and presently we are witnessing a
dynamic revival of interest in the art of pigment "sculpting".
In responding to this interest, this passion, we owe it to ourselves to present, in different
countries, professional and diverse works of art; to transmit high-quality "savoir faire"; to
champion and endorse young talent; and to "nurture" pastelists, without whom pastel art could
never have developed.
Numerous organizations worldwide are undertaking this vast task! The partnership developed
between the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada and Art du Pastel en France will enable artists
to receive professional and international acclaim, an important marketing tool in distribution and
sales of art works.
Exhibiting, teaching and painting together in various countries, along with the ability to share
projects, is a solid and active contribution towards enhancing the greatly valued artistic legacy
inherited from the distant past.

doors of Tudor Hall to the Pastel Society of
Eastern Canada's I" international exhibition.

Ogilvy has supported PSEC since 1998 by wel­
coming the juried exhibition of its members
which takes place in November of each year.
There are more and more artists using the soft
pastel medium and its diffu sion deserves to be
upheld by faithful supporters.
For more than 130 years. Ogilvy has endeav­
oured to promote the arts and culture in
Montreal. We participate each year in more than
one hundred community and charitable activities
and this exhibition answers our objectives per­
fectly. We are proud to support the Ginette Reno
Foundation which sponsors this exhibition and it
is a great honor for us to welcome Madame
Reno among us.
We also wish to extend a warm welcome to all
the participating artists from France. the United­
States and fro m Poland. The international aspect
of this exhibition will certainly guarantee a
bright future for PSEC and we wish everyone
success in all their upcoming projects.

pigment pur directement sur la surface. les pastellistes sont sous Ie charme et desirent faire

since it was founded by 14 anglophone artists who were passionate about pastels. With 240 French
and English members now, PSEC has rapidly grown to earn international respect as a highly
professional association of first rate artists. Our accomplishments now include annual juried
exhibitions at Tudor Hall, continuous presence at the International Association of Pastel Societies
conventions, a dynamic website, quarterly newsletters, a partnership with French and Russian
pastel artists, and now, our first International Exhibition. mc has made friends around the world
and we expect the exciting projects to just keep coming in the future.
What we love about this medium is the tactile sensation of applying the sticks of pure pigment
directly to the working surface. We pastelists are captivated by it and want the world to know
about its magic as a medium, once overlooked but now increasingly recognized by collectors and
galleries alike for it's unparalleled and timeless beauty.

La PSEC a entrepris, I'an dernier un partenariat avec l:Art du Pastel en
France qui a permis Ii nos membres d'exposer leurs tableaux en France lors du Salon
international de Normandie en mars 2004. ('est donc Ii leur tour celie annee de repondre Ii notre
invitation et c'est avec grand plaisir que nous les accueillons chez nous.
Soulignons aussi la presence des maltres pastellistes invites qui ont bien voulu se joindre Ii nous
pour cet evenement special. Certains d'entre eux donneront un atelier de formation Ii Montreal.
PSEC est membre de la <dnternational Association of Pastel Societies» (lAPS) qui temoigne de

On the occasion of our lOth anniversary, it is with great pride that the artists of PSEC present
this first international exhibition. The artworks were selected by Sally Strand, the well known
pastelist, and have resulted in a magnificent array of paintings of international caliber.
Last year, PSEC entered into a partnership with the society Art du Pastel en France, and our
members were invited to exhibit their works during the Salon International de Normandie in March
2004. This year, it is their turn to respond to our invitation, and it is with great pleasure that
we welcome them to Montreal.
We are also very proud to acknowledge the presence of master pastel artists that are exhibiting
with us, as well as those who came to give workshops in Montreal.
The International Association of Pastel Societies (lAPS), of which PSEC is a member, is witnessing
the incredible growth in popularity of dry pastel. We will continue to promote this marvelous medi­
um for artistic expression and the excellent work of our artists. This summer for instance, we are
participating in the APF exhibitions in France, as well as Italy, and look forward to the other
international events that are in the making.
Thank you for visiting our show, and please do not miss our next members' exhibition which will
take place from November 4 to 13, 2005, in Maison Ogilvy's Tudor Hall.

PRIZES AWARDED TO ARTISTS
Dans la carriere professionnelle d'un artiste, la reconnaissance par les pairs est
un appui important et les bourses et prix qui s'y rattachent sont tres
apprecies des gagnants. Cette an nee pres de 3 000 $ de bourses sont offerts
aux artistes meritants. Le jury qui a choisi les rI\cipiendaires etait constitue
par les maitres pastellistes renommes : mesdames Sylvie Cabal de France .et
Sally Strand de Californie, U.S.A., et messieurs Horace Champagne de I'lie
d'Orleans, Quebec e.t Jack Pardue de Virginie, U.S.A.
During an artist's professional career, recognition by peers is a valuable
support. Prizes and grants attached thereto are esteemed and precious aspects
to winners. This year close to $3,000 in cash prizes are being offered to these
artists. The jury who selected the beneficiaries to these awards was composed
of the following invited guests - internationally acclaimed master pastelists:

FORMULAIRE D'ADHESION - PSEC Societe de pastel de l'Est du Canada (PSEC) a ete fondee
a Montreal en 1995 . PSEC est une corporation a but non
lucratif constituee pour promouvoir et encourager les activites
artistiques, la connaissance et I'appreciation des arts dans Ie
domaine du pastel sec.
Notre societe est membre de l'Association Intemationale des
Societes de Pastel (lAPS), de Pastel Society of America (PSA)
et Pastel Artists Canada (PAC).
ELIGIBILITE : Tous les artistes utilisant Ie pastel sec, dans
tous les styles et tous les sujets peuvent devenir membre. Les
ceuvres doivent etre realisees avec au moins 90 % de pastel sec
pour pouvoir etre exposees. Le pastel a l'huile n' est pas accep­
teo Vous devez etre membre depuis au moins 2 mois, avant de
pouvoir vous inscrire 'a une exposition.
LA SOCIETE DE PASTEL DE L'EST DU CANADA
est une association d'artistes professionnels et amateurs qui
utilisent Ie pastel comme medium. Les buts de la societe
sont les suivants :
• Faire connaitre Ie milieu du pastel en parrainant les
expositions de travaux des membres ou tout autre moyen
approprie pour [,education du public dans Ie domaine du
pastel sec;
.Etablir des standards d'excellence et encourager l'usage
du pastel;
• Prevoir des opportunites pour I' avancement des talents via
des ateliers, conferences, seminaires, publications;
.Faire l'echange d'ictees , de nouvelles et de reussites des
membres en publiant des bulletins.
MEMBRES SIGNATAIRES : Les membres dont les ceuvres
auront ete acceptees dans les expositions PSEC sanctionnees
par jury de selection a trois (3) reprises auront Ie privilege de
devenir membre signataire et d'ajouter les initiales PSEC a
leur nom .
COTlSATlON ANNUELLE : Les frais de 35 $ sont dus en
janvier de chaque annee. Les artistes qui adherent a partir
d' octobre sont automatiquement en regie pour I'annee suiv­
ante. Vous recevrez une carte de membre confirmant votre
adhesion .
ASSEMBLEES : Dne assemblee genera Ie par an et d'autres
au besoin.
Des comites de benevoles sont necessaires pour Ie fonction­
nement efficace et dynamique d'une Societe comme la notre .

PSEC MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM The Pastel Society of Eastern Canada (PSEC) was founded
in Montreal in 1995. PSEC is a non-profit organization con­
stituted to promote and encourage artistic activities, public
awareness and appreciation of the pastel medium.
• To exchange news, ideas and members' achievements
through newsletters.
SIGNATURE MEMBERS: Those members whose work is
accepted in three (3) PSEC juried exh.ibits will have the privi­
lege of becoming signature members and using the PSEC ini­
tials after their name.
Our Society is a member of the International Association of
Pastel Societies (lAPS), The Pastel Society of America (PSA),
and Pastel Artists Canada (PAC).
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE: $35 . The fees are due in
January annually. Artists joining after October automatically
remain members for the following year. You will receive a
membersrnp card confirming your subscription.
ELIGIBILITY: All artists working with dry pastel, painting
all subjects and styles are eligible to apply for membership .
Work to be exhibited must be executed with at least 90% dry
pastel. No oil pastel permitted. You must be a member for at
least 2 months, before you may enter an exhibition.
MEETINGS: One annual meeting; others as required .
Members are expected to volunteer their time in assisting with
committee work that is an essential part of making our organ­
ization efficient and dynamic.
THE PASTEL SOCIETY OF EASTERN CANADA, is an
association of both professional and amateur pastel artists .
