O
An inevitable crossroads
For decades, the town of Poligny has occupied
a predominant place in the transport network of eastern
France. Its central position in the Jura increases this force.
Poligny is at the crossroads of two highly important routes :
The RN83 which runs from Strasbourg to Lyon and the RN5
which takes the motorist from Paris to Geneva via the Haut
Jura. Since 1998, Poligny has also had the pleasure of having
the A39 and A391 motorways right on its doorstep.
All these characteristics make the town an inevitable
crossroads and meeting point 4 hours from Paris, 3 hours
from Strasbourg and less than 2 hours from Lyon or Geneva.
Like Rome, the traveller can say that "all roads lead to Poligny".

Poligny
A town of friendship
O
Poligny has nourished friendships with other Europeans for more than
forty years. The exchanges are not only official, but also educational,
sporting, cultural, through associations…
Twinning
Through its renown
and its intellectual or
even scientific influence, the town of Poligny
could not remain isolated. From the mid
1960s, school exchange trips were organised by a teacher
from the secondary school in Poligny,
Mr Griveau, and Mr Digeser a teacher
from the secondary school in
Schopfheim, a German town of 23 000
inhabitants situated in the Bade
Wurtemberg. These exchanges, accentuated from year to year, resulted in the
twinning of the two towns on 24 June
1967. The document was signed by
Jacques Pothier, Mayor of Poligny at the
Exchanges
time, and Hans Vetter Mayor of
Schopfheim. The second twinning was
born in 1992.This time, Poligny befriended a large village situated even further
east, in the Czech
Republic, Klatovy in
the South Bohemia
region. The two
towns have a reputation for being
industrious
and
dynamic. The twinning was signed by
Pierre Tinguely, Mayor of Poligny, and
Karel Mraz, Mayor of Klatovy. Finally, it
is in 1998 that the City of Comté signed
its last writ of union
with a European town,
but this time 1700
kilometres south, in
Arouca near Porto.
What motivated the
Mayors of the time,
Jean-Claude Collin of
Poligny and Armando Pinhero de
Oliveira of Arouca, is the fact that numerous Portuguese from Poligny are natives of Arouca or its region.
The exchanges are the raison d’être of the twinning associations. Poligny is a great
follower of this, or at least with Schopfheim and Klatovy, as the conditions for travelling to Arouca are much more difficult due to the distance. Concerning the Jules
Grévy School and the Friant School, the pupils go from one country to another,
learning the way of life and education of their European neighbours. The associations are not outdone, whether they are sports (tennis, basket ball, running,…) or
cultural (music, plastic art,…).There are also exchanges through traditional fairs,
the cold market in Schopfheim, the harvest fair in Arouca, the Christmas market
in Poligny…Poligny twinning
association keeps an eye
open concerning the exchanges between the different
twin towns and Poligny. It
guarantees the good harmony between the different
municipalities but also between the associations from
the four towns.
The 20th anniversary of the Twinning
Association. An exhibition was organised
with artists from the four twin towns.

Poligny
A centre for the food industry
O
Poligny, through its skills and equipment, takes pride in itself for being
a high quality, nationally and even internationally recognized centre for
the food industry. It is the very centre of Comté cheese ripening and possesses incomparable scientific qualities.
Comté
Poligny is rightly named the “Capital
of Comté”. Indeed, most of the
cheese produced in the "Comté" zone
is ripened within its walls. Over 200
000 rounds are prepared there whilst
waiting to be sold throughout the
world.The largest ripening companies
such as Juraflore, Entremont, GrillotBrevet, Brun and Vagne can be found
in Poligny. For 25 years, the "Fête du
Comté" has also been held in the
town, a genuine moment of glory for
this king of cheeses, and which was
often hosted by famous sponsors.

Second food gem of Poligny: the
vineyards. Indeed, the territory of
Poligny only covers a small part of the
1 850 hectares in the Jura, but is a good
accompaniment to its neighbour
Arbois, that is specialised in this type
of cultivation. In the heart of the
Revermont, the vineyards of Poligny
produce quality wines: Chardonnay,
Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau under
the Registered Designation of origin:
Côtes-du-Jura,
Macvin du Jura or
even Crémant du
Jura. The wine growers of Poligny also
produce "Jura Gold"
or Vin Jaune, a
Savagnin grape aged
in casks for 6 years
and 3 months. In
February
1997,
Poligny hosted the
first Percée du
Vin Jaune, which
since then has become the largest wine
manifestation with
over 50 000 visitors
over one weekend.
O
A scientific environment
Poligny could not boast of a
high quality centre for the food
industry without having a significant scientific guarantee.
Four laboratories have taken up residence on its territory. Firstly, the
Laboratoire Départemental d’Analyses
du Jura (LDA 39 – Departmental
Analysis Laboratory).
Grouped together on
the unique site of
Poligny since 2006, the 45 employees,
of which four engineers and two vets,
examine, observe and analyse, dairy,
vine, fish, agricultural and meat products
from more than 1000 clients. For this,
they have ultramodern buildings and the
latest technological innovations in the
matter at their disposal. The themes of
the Institut National de Recherche
Agronomique (INRA –
National Institute for agronomical research) are,
amongst others, analytical techniques,
the characterization of cheese and the
study of microbial ecosystems in raw
milk cheeses. INRA also coordinates
European programmes. The Poligny
branch includes 17 engineers, 9 technicians, 10 students and 7 employees.The
Centre d’Etudes et de Contrôle des
Analyses en Industrie Laitière
(CECALAIT - Centre of
Study and Control of Dairy
Analyses ) is a growing national
organisation (+15 % per year). 13
employees of which 4 engineers and 6
technicians look after 550 clients
through interlaboratory tests, technical
support, quality assurance training, studies of analytical methods… Finally, the
Centre Technique des Fromages
Comtois (CTFC) is an
interprofessional association
created in 1975 with the aim
of improving the quality
control of Comté cheese. Its main activities are technical assistance, consultancy, analyses and quality control. 26
people work there of which 3 engineers
and 14 advanced technicians. Three
interprofessional organisations have
established their headquarters in
Poligny. The most important amongst
them is the Comité Interprofessionnel
du Gruyère de Comté (CIGC). The
establishment of the CIGC in the
Capital of Comté is only
natural since more than half
the production is ripened
in Poligny. The CIGC defends the Comté
RDO, the number one RDO cheese in
France through its tonnage (over 50 000
tonnes) and promotes it worldwide
through collective advertising. The committee also follows the market and supports diverse research programs. The
County
Federation
of
Dairy
Cooperatives (FDCL – Fédération
Départementale des
Coopératives Laitières)
ensures the roles of
representation, animation, information and service to the 70 cooperative cheese
making dairies in the Jura, this through
7 employees of which 3 engineers and
2 technicians.
CECALAIT
The Laboratoire Départemental d’Analyses Agricoles
Poligny is also lucky to have a branch
of the National Institute of
Denominations of Origin (INAO –
Institut
National
des
Appellations d’Origine) with
4 employees. This branch is
in charge of 4 RDO cheeses
produced in the Jura Massif
(Comté, Morbier, Mont d’Or and Bleu
de Gex) as well as 6 RDO wine products (Côtes-du-Jura, Crémant du Jura,
Macvin du Jura, L’Etoile, Arbois and
Château-Châlon).
Finally, Poligny would be nothing without
its National Dairy School (ENILBIO –
Ecole Nationale d’Industrie Laitière et
des Biotechnologies).Thanks to its ultramodern
technological
plant, it trains 280 students
a year in various profession
so the dairy and food
industry. ENILBIO also
provides expertise in prepared meals,
food industry engineering, the dairy
industry and cheese technology.

A town of education
Poligny has two faces : a face of youth an thirst for knowledge during the
school year, then a more calm and relaxed face during the holidays. About
2300 young people attend school in Poligny, a high number for a town of
5000 inhabitants. Through their presence, pupils and students are a real
breath of fresh air to an aging community.

accommodation
(2006-2007 school year figures)
I The student accommodation in Poligny,
not far from the teaching centres and close to the town centre, is made up of two
buildings, "les Gentianes" and "les Iris".
It is managed by the town council.
The 77 studios are furnished, with a
bathroom, individual electric heating and
are equipped with cable television. The
monthly rent is 256 ? (maintenance charges excl. electricity) for a student and 214
? for an apprentice. The accommodation
is approved and can thus be the subject
of requests for benefits from the Jura
Family Allowances Fund (CAF).The administrative documents concerning the student accommodation can be obtained
from Martine Keller - Hôtel de Ville - 49
Grande Rue - 39800 Poligny.
(2007-2008 figures)
I Comprehensive and catering
school Hyacinthe Friant is one of
the most internationally renowned catering schools. Numerous foreign students
come for placements or to study:
Germany, Czech Republic, Lebanon,
Japan,… The school’s history starts in 1936
when the buildings of the sub-Prefecture
(abolished in 1926) were transformed into
a National Professional School (ENP) in
charge of training young girls in cookery
and child education professions. Since
2005, the hotel and catering school in
Arbois is attached to the one in Poligny
and the two entities are now only one.
The establishment has a total of 1103
pupils divided into 46 classes dispersed
across the sites in Poligny and Arbois. 197
pupils are in general education, 202 are in
the medico-social sector, 15 are preparing
for the nursing entrance exam and 689
are in the hotel and catering sector. From
vocational studies certificates to degrees,
the school in Poligny proposes a wide range of training courses and diplomas.

ENILBIO
I The national dairy school (ENILBIO)
depends on the ministry of agriculture. It
ensures initial and continuous training and
apprenticeships, from certificates of professional competence to higher diplomas
such as advanced technician's certificate,
degrees and Masters. Numerous modern
facilities are available with, in particular,
the highly developed 5000 m2 technological plant which thus enables the best possible teaching. The wealth and density of
ENILBIO’s international cooperation with
numerous foreign countries must be
underlined, notably in recent times with
Russia.

The CIO
I The Jura has four careers and information centres: in Dole, Lons-le-Saunier, SaintClaude and Poligny.
The CIO (Centre d’information et d’orientation) is a free state-maintained public
service. Considerable specialist documentation concerning schools and professional training is available to the public (school
pupils, students and adults). The vocational guidance psychologists (COP) meet
those seeking information, accompany
them in their research, help them and advise them in their choice of direction. The
CIO is open from Monday to Friday from
9am to midday and from 1.30pm to
5.30pm and during the school holidays (9

An economic centre
O
Poligny,
an industrial
town
The town of Poligny conceals true economic diversity. For more than 50 years now,
intense industrial activity has developed
through companies at the cutting edge of
their professions. Thus, Thirode
Grande Cuisines Poligny (TGCP),
integral part of the international group
ITW, has an ultra modern technological
tool and occupies the place of French leader in materials for community and restaurant kitchens. Another of Poligny’s
jewels: The DIAGER group, leader in
drill bits, from the microscopic to the very
big.The group had a turnover of 25 million
euros in 2006 for 32 millions units produced. Alongside these two great hulks of
national and international calibre, multiple
units that manufacture diverse products
or offer different services rub shoulders
on the industrial estate in Poligny.
Covered by the entire fluid distribution
network and notably natural gas distributed by GDF, as well as by broadband internet, the industrial estate in Poligny still
The Messageries Jurassiennes (Groupe Jeantet)
The Pépinière d’Entreprise
continues to attract numerous promoters
and investors.
Strong point of local industry: In its midst
Poligny has five of the biggest Comté ripening cellars in the Franche-Comté region.
Over 200 000 rounds thus age in the perfectly designed cellars with daily care carried out by robots.
Other companies in the food industry
have appeared over the past few years
in the employment sector of Poligny,
An appliance being assembled at TGCP
notably "Le Moulin de Vaux" that specialises in Foie Gras and prepared meals, and
"Perrine" for whom the know-how resides in slices of bread garnished with local
products.
Today, the economic sector in Poligny no
longer depends on the town as it has been
transferred to the Communauté de communes du Comté de Grimont. Contact:

Poligny,
a commercial
town
Supermarkets and small shops coexist harmoniously in Poligny. As far as the local
shops are concerned, the people of Poligny
have almost all the services they need:
Bakery, cake shops, butcher’s, caterers, grocer’s, green grocer’s, dairy shop, wine, clothes, shoes, underwear, hairdresser’s, aesthetician, news agents, lottery, photography,
decoration, IT, television, white goods, estate agents, banks, insurers, pizzerias, restaurants, hotels, bars, pubs, snack bars, fast
food, printing… This local trade provides
the town centre with an unequalled vitality. This is strengthened by the existence
of "La Polinoise", an association of traders
that provides advice and activities for its
members. Finally, Poligny is involved in
ORAC, a program for the improvement
and restoration of trade and craft. The
ORAC grants financial help from the
government, the department of the Jura
and the Communauté de Communes du
Comté de Grimont for investments that
aim at revitalising local trade.
As far as the supermarkets are concerned, in 2006 the Communauté de
Communes inaugurated the Grimont Sud
business park situated at the south end of
the town.A 2500 m2 Intermarché hypermarket can already be found there. The
county commission for business equipment has also agreed on the installation
The Place des Déportés and its Market
of an area of 1600 m2 devoted to shoes
and clothes with the double name "Défi
Mode" and "Chaussea". Other projects will
follow in this rapidly growing sector. Lidl,
a hard discounter, Fouine Bazar, a bazaar,
and Espace Emeraude, a DIY shop, can be
found on the industrial estate. Finally, the
supermarket Shopi, situated in the town
centre, plays the role of intermediary between the supermarket strictly speaking
and local shops.

Poligny
A United town
O
Poligny is not a town where you feel alone. Each person can find an activity, support, a commitment that interests them. Persons in difficulty are
never abandoned thanks to the many different and well supported social
actions. In Poligny, solidarity is not a futile word.
A genuine
social
complex
In order to bring together in one place the different social actors in Poligny,
in 2008 the municipality decided to
build a true social complex. The building is just next to the Maison Louise
Michel, which shelters the day nursery and Jura county council (Conseil
Général) social services.With an area
of 400 m2, a third of the building is
devoted to the Communal centre for
social action - Centre Communal
d’Action Social (CCAS). The latter
receives, listens, provides answers to
people in distress and thus prevents
the process of exclusion.The CCAS
investigates the demands for social
benefits and the follow-up of RMI
(minimum income for social integration), organises visits twice a year to
people in hospital with a small gift,
hands out parcels to the over 80s for
the end of year festivities and patrons
day, and finally, organises a Christmas
party. In the same building, alongside
the CCAS, different charities can be
found who were previously spread
across several different premises
throughout the town. The Secours
Populaire has an area of
62 m2, the Secours
Catholique 31 m2 and
the Restaurants du
Coeur 107 m2. These
premises are made available to the associations
free of charge, but they
have to furnish and
arrange
them
themselves. This
social complex is
also ecological, with its 200 m2 of
solar panels on the roof that produce 20 400 kWh per year.

The solidarity run
Attentive
charities
Poligny has numerous social associations,
some on a permanent basis others with
regular, weekly or monthly opening hours.
The FNATH (national federation for accidents at work and the disabled in the Jura
- fédération nationale des accidentés du
travail et des handicapés du Jura) sees its
members or anyone needing
any information every
Wednesday from 6pm to
7pm. The Parkinson association also receives patients and
their families every second Thursday of
the month from 3pm to 5pm.To help drug
addicts, Passerelle 39 opens twice a month
on the first and third Tuesdays from 9am
to 11am. Mentally ill patients can ask for
help from the UNAFAM (national union
of friends and family of mentally ill patients
- union nationale des amis et familles des
malades psychiques) every fourth Monday
of the month from 2pm to 5pm. Finally,
the information centre on women’s and
family rights (CIDFF) opens its doors on
the first Friday of every month from 2pm
to 4.30pm.
The social centre in Poligny also accommodates the CAF (4th Monday from 9am
to 12), the CRAM (3rd Tuesday from 9am
to 12 and 1pm to 4pm), the CPAM (social
security) every Wednesday from 9am to
12 and from 1pm to 4pm, and the social
services on 1st and 3rd Fridays from 9am
to 12. For certain opening times, you need

O
Dynamic
associations
Poligny has more than ninety associations
thus each inhabitant can find what they
are looking for. Around fifteen are social
or in the field of solidarity. The biggest is
the Association for the fight against waste – Association de lutte contre le gaspillage (ALCG). It is a professional integration
association
through economic activity
created about
thirty years
ago. The economic activity, integration support, is based
on reusing waste: collection, sorting, promotion and sale. These activities are structured around several sites: Poligny, Dole,
Champagnole and Morez. But, the ALCG
intervenes across a much larger area and
to date covers a considerable part of the
Jura and can even propose certain services (destruction of confidential documents) on a regional scale (FrancheComté) and beyond.
Each year the ALCG employs over 180
people through integration contracts; each
employee benefits from technical support
and socio-professional accompaniment.
A permanent team of 26 employees occupy key positions in management, administration, development, supervision, socioprofessional accompaniment....The ALCG
develops social, economical and environmental themes that are part of a sustainable development logic. It also intervenes
as an actor in local development around
a partnership and territorial roots logic.
For several years, the structure has entered into a genuine professionalisation
approach:
- Of staff in integration (promotion of
skills, development of training…).
- Of permanent staff on two themes :
Retail premises of the ALCG
reemployment (the ALCG is a member of
the national resources and recycling network) and integration (vocational training
for technical supervision of integration)…
- Of the structure: organisation of workshops, investments in materials, start up of
an online sales activity of rare or antique
objects, shop layout, training program,…
The association JALMALV (accompany
life until death), the blood donors association, the association of families, the
ADMR, Vaincre la Mucoviscidose,
Coup de Coeur pour le Bénin,…
can also been found…
Three associations whose objective is education:The FCPE, Déclic (help with child
alertness and personal independence)
and the Sou
des Ecoles
Publiques.
Around
a
dozen associations animate the town and
its neighbourhoods :
les Amis de Charcigny, la Dame
Verte, l’Union Polinoise, le Club
Curasson… whilst the objective of four

The holiday clubs (CLSH) are managed
by the Francas for 3 to 13 year olds and
the Séquanaise and its youth centre for
11 to 18 year olds.With 750 members, the
Séquanaise, the first association registered
in the Jura at the time of the promulgation
of the 1901 law on associations, remains
the largest association in Poligny by its number of members.
The youth centre always puts on an innovating program for the school holidays as
well as a list of new holiday camps.
For the remainder, it proposes cultural and
sporting activities throughout the year

Poligny
A town of culture
O
We can be a scientific, sporting, industrial or commercial town and still
attach considerable importance to culture. Poligny has thus acquired culture renown, which has largely gone beyond the boundaries of its territory. The cultural sector was moreover transferred to the Communauté
de Communes du Comté de Grimont in 2005 for a wider and more effective diffusion. The Revermont region has also made the most of European
funding from Leader + to increase the quality of cultural actions through
associations established on its territory.
A theatrical
town
The theatre takes up an increasing part of
the annual cultural program in Poligny. The
town has two amateur dramatics groups
in its midst who regularly put on plays of
their own creation or adaptations of well
known authors. The first is part of the
Séquanaise: les Baladins. The second
brings together actors who are members
of the artistic association Mi-Scène.The
theatre is also expressed through a very
important partnership between
the town of Poligny
and Scènes du
Jura, a departmental association that enables culture to reach rural
areas. Thus the people of
Poligny no longer need to
go to larger towns to see a
show. Three times a year, performances
are organised in Poligny,Arbois and Salinsles-Bains.
The association Mi-Scène, created in 2003,
programs two professional performances
per month at the Cave Théâtre, refurbished at the beginning of the 00s. It also
accommodates artists-in-residence and
develops partnerships, not only with
Scènes du Jura, but also with Jazz in
Franche-Comté, the Moulin de Brainans
and Côté Cour (network of shows for
young people).
The Cave Théâtre still accommodates the

Théâtre des Valises
(professional company)
and the association
Place des Théâtres
created in 2000, a resource centre for amateur and professional theatre management.
This association revolves around three
axes:
- The theatre library open to
the public and that organises lectures
around contemporary authors
- training of amateur and professional
actors
- the programming delegated to the association Mi-Scène hence the strong partnership between the two associations.
Poligny has a
regional
and
even
extraregional reputation thanks to
the music of
La Montaine.
La Montaine is
an association
almost in its forties of which the aim is to train young
musicians to achieve excellence and popularize as much as possible musical culture
with the people of Poligny and the Jura. La
Montaine draws its potential from the
school of music of the Communauté de
Communes du Comté de Grimont based
in the Town Hall in Poligny.
O
La Montaine (Chœur et Orchestre) en concert
The recipe works perfectly, helped by the
fact that the art director of La Montaine
is also the director of the school of
music.Numerous concerts are organised
throughout the year, mainly in Poligny of
course, but also in several other towns in
the region and in the twin towns, notably
Schopfheim. La Montaine also has a choir,
of which the reputation does not have to
envy the brass and reed band. It has obtained several rewards and has performed
in Poligny and elsewhere. A few kilometres away, the Moulin de Brainans can
be found, a concert hall for modern music
that can hold up to 600 people. The Moulin
is managed
by the association
Promodégel created in Poligny in 1979 to
promote rock culture in rural areas. Since
1995 and its arrival in Brainans, the association proposes weekly concerts from
September to June, of eclectic sorts (rock,
metal, electro, music of the world, hip
hop…). The Moulin receives artists of
national and international repute: the Négresses Vertes, Manu Chao,
Louise Attaque, Aldebert, Têtes Raides,
Lofofora,… From 1995 to 2007, the
concert hall accommodated 650 evening
performances, 1000 groups and some
115 000 spectators.
Art
and literature
Poligny‘s cultural panorama would not be
complete without the artists, painters,
sculptors, photographers, engravers and
others. Several years ago, an association
was created in Poligny, Art’Pol, which
enables each artist to express themselves
and to show their talent through a joint,
specialised structure.
Art'Pol regularly organises exhibitions
whether in Poligny, Bonnefontaine, a village a few kilometres away, or in other
towns of the Revermont Region, Salinsles-Bains and Arbois. Poligny is also interested
in
contemporary
art thanks to
the association
Arco. The latter has moreover chosen the
chapelle de la
Congrégation
for its twentieth anniversary exhibition.
Côté Jardin and the artist Chantal
Rident also presents an exhibition in the
summer months at Chaussenans, on the
hilltops above Poligny, whilst Bruno Tosi's
workshop presents great expertise
concerning the fabrication of stained glass
windows.
Poligny’s library has been transferred
to the community since 2005. Founded in
1860, it holds 14 000 works available to
the public. The reader can look for a book
they are interested in thanks a completely computerized database.Access to literary culture in Poligny is thus very easy.
The library also conceals ancient and patrimonial collections of immense wealth
representing up to 8000 works dating from
the XVI and the beginning of the XX centuries. The oldest book is a work by
Benjamin Constant de Rebecque, politician and French writer of Swiss origin
(1767-1830).This manuscript, "Le siège de
Soissons", is a book of free verse in three
unbound volumes.

Poligny
A historical town
O
The history of Poligny goes back to Roman times. Two superb mosaics, called "les Chambrettes
du Roi", found along the national 5 near the town in the XVIII century attest. These mosaics
which are no longer there today, were most probably in a very grand Gallo-Roman villa. But,
it is also supposed that people lived in Poligny well before the Roman conquest as this region
was part of Séquanie in Celtic times. The presence of inhabitants on the territory of Poligny
is attested by bronze objects found in a cave in Roncevaux and in a tumulus in the Moidons
forest. Other remnants also remain, notably a rock, druid monument also called "Pierre
qui Vire". According to legends of old, a rather roguish giant was chasing a shepherdess and just as he was about to catch her, the "Gods" intervened and turned him into
stone. Since this adventure, the giant is allowed to turn on himself every 100 years,
thus the name "Pierre qui Vire" or "Stone that turns".
Be that as it may, the name Poligny (Polemniacum) appeared for the first time in 870, in the
Meerssen Treaty, which divided the Lotharingie (to which Poligny had belonged since 843) between Louis le Germanique and Charles le Chauve. Poligny, as the entire region, was attributed
to Louis le Germanique. After having belonged to the King of France Charles V for several years,
Poligny came under the domination of the Counts of Burgundy, then the House of Austria, of
Spain, to definitively belong, after many bloody wars, to the kingdom of France in 1674, after
the Treaty of Nimègue.

church was built in the IX century.
Originally, it had three naves of 80 metres
long and a multitude of chapels but its
situation "beyond the walls" of the town
explains the destruction that it has experienced throughout history. This magnificent roman church has conserved its flagstone roof and its XII century steeple. It
is a square building, surmounted on an
octagonal arrow adorned with twenty windows and flanked with pinnacles on which
a series of sculpted animal and human
heads can be seen. On each face of the
tower, two roman windows open up, decorated with pillars.Today, the church is made
up of three parts that present the different styles. In the roman style entrance,
lies the tomb of Antoine de Montmartin,
A rich cultural
heritage
The historical heritage of Poligny is
extraordinarily rich. Three churches of
completely different styles blend into the
landscape.
- The Collegiate Saint-Hippolyte :
building began in 1415 thanks to Jean
Chousat, middle-class citizen of Poligny.
The dome has replaced the original steeple which was surmounted by a big sculpted arrow that was said to double the
height of the current building. SaintHippolyte is one of the most beautiful
"vessels" in Franche-Comté. It is true that
the sober lines, its unornamented cowls
and low-level arches give an impression of
strength and nobility. But its great wealth
is its statues, mostly from the XV century, from the School of Burgundy. The
church is made up of four different chapels: One is devoted to Jean Chevrot,
Bishop of Tournai, who originated from
Poligny. The second chapel is dedicated to
Saint-François-Xavier.The statue of Pierre
Versay, Bishop of Amiens, native of Poligny
and more particularly nephew of Jacques
Coittier, one of the most famous personalities from Poligny, can be seen. Indeed,
Jacques Coittier was doctor to Louis XI.
The stained glass window that can be seen
in this chapel represents the arrival of the
relics of Sainte Colette in Poligny.
In the third chapel,Thomas de Plaine can
be found. He was from Poligny and was
the president of the Parliament of
Burgundy. Finally, the last chapel at the end
of the nave is the chapel of the founder,
Jean Chousat. He is buried at the foot of
the altar.
In the great nave, at the entrance to the
vast, deep chancel, a great Calvary made
from multicoloured wood from the XV
century and placed on the «Beam of
Glory» can be seen. The collegiate also has
two XIX century Cavaillé Coll organs. A
fresco representing Saint-Christophe was
discovered next to the bigger of the two
organs and recently restored.

wife of Jean de Poupet, Knight to the
chamber of Charles Fifth. In the second
part, called the "Chapelle de la Cannelle",
a certain rupture in style can be noted,
arches and windows are indeed of segmental style. It is here that can be found
the altar-piece of the alabaster composed
of three parts:The annunciation, the nativity and the worship of the wise men.
Under the steeple, a XIV century
Burgundy style Calvary can be seen.
Numerous works of art that ornate
Mouthiers-le-Vieillard are part of a vast
XV century artistic whole. Unfortunately,
several of them were notably sold to the
Metropolitan Museum in New-York in
1920.
The Vierge Educatrice (the original is in the
Metropolitan Museum in New-York)
- The Jacobins church : The old
Jacobins convent is a vast building founded in 1271 by Alix de Méranie, Countess
of Burgundy. It harboured a congregation
of Friar Preachers up to the Revolution,
then became a sub-prefecture for a few
years.Very little is left of the old convent:
The cloister was dismantled about sixty
years ago, but the big square tower called
"Tour de la Bibliothèque", surmounted
with a clock steeple was already part of
the XV century ramparts. The Jacobins
church dates back to the XIII century,
today it is used by the Coopérative Viticole
of Poligny. It is of the most pure gothic
style and has three naves without
transept. Numerous finely worked arch
keys, a tirforium recently discovered and
a monumental marble altar-piece built in
the XVIII century which fills the far end
of the apse can be admired. Formerly in
this church, funeral monuments of the
most illustrious families in Poligny could
be found. Only the statue of Thomas de
Plaine, Chancellor and Emperor
Maximilien remain.The Jacobins church is
considered as one of the most beautiful
in France, the acoustics are exceptional.
Indeed, in the chancel, under the sculpted
base, a hole has been made. This hole
opens onto a terracotta jug in the shape
of a pear that confers an incomparable
sonority. A restoration program for the
outside of the building is being undertaken. It should be spread over several years.
The Congregation Chapel dates back to
the XVIII century. In fact, the confraternity of wine growers and craftsman was
born in 1698. Its statutes schedule prayers,
meetings, the obligation to visit the sick…
The first meetings took place in the chapel of the confraternity of the cross (the
now theatre). Following different conflicts,
the members of the Congregation had to
find a new place to meet. The congregationists thus acquired the house in ruins
in the Grande Rue. Once rebuilt with the
help of 400 people, the chapel was blessed and inaugurated on 29 Mai and 1st
June 1732. In 1779, it was sold as national
property then resold in 1807 to the priest
of Saint-Sulpice who returned the chapel
to its former use. Now disaffected and
entirely refurbished, numerous exhibitions
are held.
Towers
.
From the Place des Déportés, above the
rooftops, the Tower of Paradise,
named after a citizen of Poligny, can be
seen. This tower is part of the remains of
the old ramparts which surrounded the
town in the XVI century. The ramparts
went up the side of the hill to Grimont
Castle. The tower of the
Sergenterie is one of many of the
remains of the defences of the XVI century ramparts. Restored recently, it is a
good example of the medieval fortification: The wooden part lies on the stone
machicolation, and from the top of this

Fountains
The town of Poligny has around thirty
fountains. In 1700 there were 11, in 1827
there were 18 and in 1850 there were
around 26. Amongst the main fountains
are the fontaine du Cheval Marin
(bottom end of the Grande Rue), which
dates back to the XVIII century, but also
the two fountains on the Town Hall front
(XVII and XVIII centuries), the Fontaine
aux Poissons (XVI century), the

features, the muscles and
the clothes were sculpted
with great precision. The

the progressive values of
the XIX century: Selfdevelopment through study (books) and work
(bigot).Through Wladimir
Gagneur, it pays tribute to
the political dynamism of
Poligny. The town was A bishop from Poligny
won over by the revolutionary ideal then by secular and republican socialism after 1850. In the centre of
the Place des Déportés in Poligny, the statue of General Travot can be found. He
remains one of the golden boys of Poligny.
It is only recently that this statue regained
its place on its pedestal. Indeed, the original was removed during the second world
war, by the Germans, to be melted down
to be transformed into arms. The square
continued to mourn its hero until a new
statue was ordered, and sculpted by
Bernard Jobin, a sculptor from the region.

Poligny
A town of sport
O
Today, Poligny is one of the sportiest towns in the county. A reality due
to different factors: its young students, its scientific researchers…, its high
quality equipment, its numerous associations. Sport also conveys the image of a vibrant town way beyond its regional borders.
High quality
equipment
Inaugurated on 18 June 2005, the sports
complex is certainly the jewel and the
very emblem of sport in Poligny. The lower
section includes an artificial turf football
pitch, the only one to date in the Jura.
Illuminated by four twenty-three metre
high lighting columns, it enables high quality matches and even matches of between
young players of national scale to be held.
On the upper section, the sports complex
is mainly designed for athletics, with notably a 400 metre track with up to eight
lanes along one section, a steeple chase
pit and all the facilities necessary for hammer, discus, shot-put and javelin throwers
and high jumpers, long jumpers, pole-vaulters and triple jumpers. Throwing areas
have also been anticipated for schools and
young beginners. A grass pitch, which is
used by the different throwers as well as
for football, completes the whole.
The sports hall on the champ d’Orain
is also an essential element of sport in
Poligny.With a capacity of 500 seats under
normal circumstances, it has a high quality wooden floor and can be used for all
sorts of team sports and martial arts.
Equipped mainly for basketball, it has been
home to prestigious meetings between
teams at the highest national level, notably between ASVEL and the SIG of
Strasbourg.
The COSEC Claude Jeanneret
Hall is the latest sports hall to have
undergone profound transformations in
Poligny. Equipped with movable stands and

a high performance resin floor, numerous
competitions can be held, notably Handball
matches. Finally, the town of Poligny also
has three outdoor synthetic clay tennis
courts, one indoor court, a gymnastics hall with a wooden floor, an indoor
boulodrome and outdoor Boules
Lyonnaises courts, an indoor petanque
court and outdoor games, and the Champ
d’Orain esplanade enables basketball tournaments to be organised with three equipped courts.
A wealth
of associations
Nearly 1500 people from Poligny are registered or are licence holders in one of the
town’s sports clubs or sports associations.
Team sports are well represented :

Basketball through Poligny Jura
Basket Comté, handball through the
Handball Club de Poligny and football through the Football Club
Polinois. Each of these entities has a
team of elite but also actively participate
in the training of children, managers and
supervisors.The other sports have an
activity just as considerable :
Athletics, tennis, boule lyonnais, pétanque,
potholing, climbing and even….skittles.
Martial arts such as Karate, savate or even
judo have seen significant progression.
Finally, numerous other sports are undertaken with the Séquanaise (gymnastics, dance, badminton, clay pigeon shooting, yoga…), the association Sport &
Forme (weight training, step, fitness…),
or with the UNSS sections at the school
(wrestling, aerobics,…).The list of sports
associations with the name and address
of their president is available on Poligny’s
website.
Poligny has national renown thanks to
Comté, its centre for the food industry,
its catering school, but also thanks to its
wealth of sport. Basketball players from
Poligny Jura Basket Comté have held high
the colours of Poligny throughout France
for over twelve years now, between
National divisions 4, 3 and 2.
For several years, the capital of Comté has
been able to boast of a greater and greater number of French champions.
Jennifer Bouvet, French clay pigeon shooting Champion, Sandro Parussatti and
Cindy Royet, French boules lyonnaises
champions, Joël Milan and Marylou
Garnier, French savate champions. Its greatest expectations are in Lucie Magnon,
French UNSS wrestling champion in 2005,
double French champion (federal and
UNSS) in 2006 and 2007 and who has
already been selected to prepare for the
2012 Olympics.
Finally, the sports complex enables several athletics meetings to be held each year,
including national meetings where several
top sports persons come and compete
for a weekend.

Poligny
A multimedia town
O
One of Poligny's strengths lies in always being at the cutting edge of technology.
For a decade (May 1999 – April 2009), the Capital of Comté was one of two
hundred municipalities in France to have its own television channel. Firstly, from
1999 to 2003, it was a local infographic channel. Subsequently a touch of video
was instilled into the schedule notably with programs that will remain in the
memories of the people of Poligny for a long time, “Confidences”, where local
personalities talked about important chapters in their life, and "A vos fourneaux"
"Get cooking", where cooking recipes with regional produce were revealed by
professionals and even a few passionate amateurs.
- Tourism : This section is an Eldorado for those who wish to visit Poligny and the local area.
They can find here all they need to know about
accommodation, catering, the different activities and local recipes.
- Living in Poligny : all the information concerning shops, businesses and actors of economic life in Poligny, the names and addresses of
all the associations, the teaching establishments, sustainable development and all the specificities of the centre for the food industry.
An essential
media : Internet
- Sports & leisure : All the activities provided
at the two holiday clubs (CLSH) in Poligny, the
Francas and the Séquanaise. The avid sportsman can also discover all the indoor as well as
outdoor facilities available.
The arrival of DTTV in the Poligny area in 2007
with 18 free channels, caused a decrease in
the number of subscribers to cable TV and, at
the same time, the number of potential viewers
of Poligny Television. Rather than continuing to
invest pointlessly in the field of television,
the town thought it better to seriously look
into a radical rethink of their Website. It is
thus that at the end of 2008, the website
www.ville-poligny.fr was totally revamped, with
clearer and more adapted sections, the latest
news visibly presented. It is now possible to
take a 360° panoramic virtual tour of Poligny
thanks to a series of photographs taken from
the top of the Collegiate Saint-Hippolyte, but
also to relive the main events in Poligny through
photos and consult the latest videos recorded
concerning largely local subjects. The architecture of the municipal website is centred on 5
themes :
- The agenda : The program of the different
events organised in Poligny can be found in this
section. It is also possible to book the hall or
the municipal minibus. And not forgetting
Poligny’s cinema program.
- Town of Poligny : Maps of the town and the
communauté de communes du Comté de
Grimont, presentation of the town councillors
and different municipal services, social services, invitations to tender and student accommodation. It is also possible to download various
administrative documents concerning municipal tariffs for the current year and the minutes
of the town council meetings.
The cybernaut can also leave messages via the
website’s home page and can also subscribe
to the newsletter published once or twice a
week to keep themselves informed on the latest
news.

organised in Poligny. Updated regularly,
it is available to all the local associations,
who must contact Gérald Cantaux
at the town hall (03 84 73 71 71) or

Printed
communication
Whilst staying modern, the town of Poligny is
attached to “printed” communication. Even if
the digital democratic process is very quick, not
all the people of Poligny have access to cable
television or the
internet.
Four times a year,
the town’s comunication department publishes
«Poligny Com’»,
an eight to sixteen page municipal bulletin in
quadricolour and
magazine size.
The cover photo

N° 1 - Novembre 2008
Another tradition for
over ten years now :
The publication of
annual agenda. As
well as the traditional
calendar, it includes
an article on a local
subject, an updated
list of associations,
the list of emergency
services
and
practical information
concerning daily life.
