What’s New Volume 3, No 1 January 2011 McGill-CIHR Drug Development Training Program Important Dates: The DDTP Lung Cancer Drug Development Symposium April 18, 2011 DDTP Symposium “The impact of Molecular Recognition in Drug Discovery” The second DDTP symposium of the academic year took place on October 8, 2010 at the McGill Faculty Club, with the participation of a group of collaborating experts on lung cancer treatment and drug discovery from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute of the Harvard Medical school. Chaired by Dr. Bertrand Jean-Claude, the session begun with a lecture by Dr. Pasi Jänne on the benefits and limitations of the current therapies in the (Continued on page 2) April 15, 2011 DDTP Spring Competition Deadline Inside this issue: From left to right: Dr. Kwok-Kin Wong, MD, Ph.D., invited speaker, Dr. Pasi Jänne, MD, Ph.D.. invited speaker, Dr. Bertrand Jean-Claude, Ph.D., session chair and DDTP co-director, Dr. Nathanael Gray, Ph.D. invited speaker, and Dr. Youla Tsantrizos, Ph.D. Chair of the DDTP Workshop and Seminar Development DDTP Lung Cancer Symposium 1 Fall 2010 Scholarship and Fellowship Competition Re- 1 Upcoming DDTP Symposium: The Impact of Molecular Recognition in Drug Discovery 2 Invitation to Acknowledge CIHR and DDTP in Publications and Poster Presentations 3 Travel Grant Awardee 3 Fall 2010 Scholarship and Fellowship Competition Results The Scholarship and Fellowship committee has reviewed and ranked 30 applications received from the Departments of Chemistry (14), Pharmacology (8) and Medicine (8). A total of 17 trainees have been selected, giving a success rate of 56% in this third competition. Of the 17 funded trainees, 7 are from the Department of Chemistry (41%), 6 from Medicine (35%) and 4 from Pharmacology (24%). The awards were granted to 3 Master’s, 10 Ph.D. students and 4 post-doctoral fellows. This increases the number of DDTP trainees in the program to 24 in total. (Continued on page 2) January 2011 What’s New DDTP Lung Cancer Symposium (continued) (Continued from page 1) clinical management of lung cancer, followed by Dr. Kwok-King Wong who discussed the use of genetically engineering mouse models for testing novel therapeutics. Dr. Wong described the new mouse hospital of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute designed to mimic human cancer treatment from drug administration to sophisticated imaging techniques such as small animal MRI and PET imaging. The drug design aspect of the symposium was presented by Dr. Nathanael Gray, a medicinal chemist, who discussed the rational drug design approaches for identifying selective protein kinase inhibitors. The symposium was highly multidisciplinary, covering several aspects of drug development including medicinal chemistry, drug design, animal models and clinical testing. The session was well animated and well attended. The DDTP Office recorded a total of 83 registrants and 70 attendants. The Workshop and Seminar Development committee and the DDTP thank all the speakers for their excellent lectures and all the participants who, through their numerous questions, contributed to a very animated session. Fall 2010 Scholarship and Fellowship Competition Results (continued) Deadline Reminder: April 15, 2011 Scholarship and Fellowship Competition, All documents must be submitted by 11:59 PM. (Continued from page 1) Three of the new trainees are being funded by the new Oncology Training Fund, created with a donation from Pfizer and dedicated to support cancer research. Also awarded during the competition was the Maysie Mac Sporran scholarship from the Faculty of Medicine. The scholarship is awarded to a top-ranked student in official training programs of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Irina Glazkova from Dr. Terence Hebert’s lab in the department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics was presented the scholarship in conjunction with a DDTP scholarship based on the exceptional quality of her application. It should be noted that Irina Glazkova is the second student from Dr. Hebert’s Lab to receive the Maysie Mac Sporran award. On behalf of the DDTP, we congratulate all the successful candidates and wish them a productive upcoming year. We thank the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Pfizer, and the MUHC Research Institute for funding the awards granted in this competition. Should you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact Aube Mamias, DDTP administrator. Travel Grant Awardees On behalf of the scholarship and fellowship committee, we are pleased to announce the third travel awardee of the DDTP (see complete list of awardees). Irina Glazkova (supervisor: Dr. Terry Hebert) received funding to present a poster on the proteomics approach to identify novel interacting partners of β2-Adrenergic receptors at the Great Lakes 2010 GPCR Meeting in Toronto. Applications for travel awards can be submitted at any time and results are disclosed approximately one month following receipt of the application. For more information, please see the guidelines.
