« Developing the writing skill »

La Maison du Doctorant de l'université d'Oran, en partenariat avec le Centre
d’Enseignement Intensif des Langues (CEIL), organise un atelier de formation sur l’écriture
scientifique en langue Anglaise au profit des Doctorants des filières scientifiques. Cet atelier
qui regroupera au maximum vingt personnes s’adresse en priorité aux doctorants en phase
de produire une publication (article ou thèse) en Anglais ou qui projettent de participer à des
manifestations scientifiques internationales.
Les doctorants désirant participer à cet atelier sont priés de compléter la fiche
d’inscription et d’exposer leurs motivations en rédigeant, en anglais, un petit texte de 04 à 05
lignes et de l’envoyer à l’adresse suivante : [email protected] au plus tard le
09 Avril 2013.
Pré-requis :
La participation à cet atelier est réservée à ceux dont la maîtrise de la langue
est au moins du niveau B2 ou C1 (cf. CERCL).
Si nécessaire, pour départager les candidatures, il sera organisé un test de
positionnement en anglais. Les dates et la procédure à suivre pour faire le test de
positionnement seront communiquées ultérieurement aux candidats.

Workshop:
“Developing the writing skill”
1- This workshop is intended for intermediate and advanced-level learners who want to
develop their writing skill to become able to produce a coherent and cohesive piece of
work (be it a scientific article or a thesis).
The workshop will take place in two stages :
Stage 1: How to write scientific research articles.
Stage 2 : How to write a doctoral thesis (Research methodology)

Stage 1: How to write scientific research articles.
Aims / Objectives
In stage 1, we aim at teaching the learners how to write scientific research articles based on
genre analysis. We shall focus mainly on the ‘Introduction’ and ‘Discussion’ sections
following Swales’pioneering work « Aspects of Article Introductions» and Dudley-Evans
« The discussion section of articles ». This choice is not arbitrary because the ‘Introduction’
and ‘Discussion’ are said to be the most important sections of scientific articles and the most
difficult to write.

Practice through the following tasks and activities :

Learners will be asked to bring scientific research articles of their own choice for
discussion.
They will also be asked to write their own pieces of work (Introduction and / or
discussion sections) to illustrate the contents and strategies explained above.
Stage 2 : How to write a doctoral thesis (Research methodology)
Aims / objectives
Stage 2 will deal with research methodology to help doctoral students to write and organise
their thesis through the following steps as how to :

Identify and describe the different parts / chapters of the thesis.
express clearly the hypotheses and research questions.
write the thesis introduction.
present the bibliography /references.
Practice :
-
The students will be asked to put in practice what they have learnt (write their
research hypotheses /questions ; write their thesis introduction ; etc.).
