Activity 1
Now have a go at testing your skills. This short poem contains many examples
of the ‘on’ and ‘ien’ sounds. You may also like to revise the letter string ‘e a u’
which sounds ‘eau’ and which was introduced in Phonics Episode 1 before
attempting this poem.
Listen to the poem first of all with the text in front of you (either on screen or .pdf
transcript). Here’s the first verse. When you listen to this note how many times
you hear the ‘ien’ letter string.
Les clowns
Zizou le clown est magicien
Zizou le clown moi je l’aime bien
Quand il tape sur son chapeau
Il fait apparaître un oiseau
Quand il tape avec sa baguette
Il fait apparaître une alouette
OK so hopefully you were able to hear the magicien and bien.
Activity 2
Now here’s the second verse. This time focus on the letter string ‘e a u’ and the
‘eau’ sound.
Dobo le clown est rigolo
Dobo le clown aime les gâteaux
Quand il arrive sous le chapiteau
Il tient toujours un drapeau
Quand il joue du pipeau
On dirait un corbeau
Did you hear the following gâteaux, chapiteau, drapeau, pipeau and corbeau?
Activity 3
Are you ready now for verse 3? Let’s up the challenge a bit. When you listen this
time, how many times do you hear the letter string ‘ien’ and also ‘on’?
Gigi le clown est musicien
Gigi le clown est italien
Quand il joue de l’accordéon
Ça fait tomber son pantalon
Quand il joue de la clarinette
Ça fait monter ses chaussettes
Here are some of the words you might have picked out:- musicien, italien,
accordéon, pantalon.
Activity 4
When you feel more confident with these sounds and letter strings, listen to the
poem again but this time without the text in front of you. Can you pick out the
three letter strings you have just been practising?

When you are ready have a go at reading the poem yourself, putting all your new
found skills into practice. You could even try doing some of these activities with
your class.
That’s the end of this episode.
Au revoir. À bientôt.
Bye and listen in again soon.
