From September 16-20, North America’s largest animation festival
once again takes centre stage in the Nation’s Capital. Come and
enjoy the world’s most cutting-edge, funny, heartfelt and rabblerousing animation films, while mingling with many of animation’s
most celebrated stars, studios and characters.

everyone and anyone at the Ottawa International Animation Festival
(OIAF).

Since 1976, the OIAF has attracted film and animation buffs, art lovers
and filmmakers from around the globe. You won’t want to miss this
year’s exciting line-up of screenings, workshops, panels and parties
taking place at the ByTowne Cinema, Arts Court, National Gallery of
Canada, Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts and the Chateau Laurier

The Official Competition section of the Ottawa International
Animation Festival (OIAF) consists of works selected by the festival
programming team, led by Artistic Director Chris Robinson.
La sélection officielle du Festival International d’Animation d’Ottawa
se compose d’œuvres choisies par l’équipe de programmation de
l’OIAF, menée par le Directeur artistique, Chris Robinson.
This year, the OIAF received a total of 2088 entries from 85 different
countries. Of those, 75 short films and 4 feature films were chosen for
competition. In addition, 69 showcase films were chosen to represent
the efforts of the Canadian, international, and student communities.
Cette année, l’OIAF a reçu au total 2088 inscriptions de films,
provenant de 85 pays. Parmi eux, 75 courts-métrages et 4 longsmétrages ont été sélectionnés en compétition. Par ailleurs, 69 films
ont été choisis hors-compétition pour mettre à l’honneur les projets
des communautés canadiennes, internationales et étudiantes.
During the Festival, three official juries sit with the audience and
judge the Short, Feature and Children’s Competition screenings. The
Short and Feature jury members are chosen from the international
animation community. The Children’s Jury is comprised of Ottawaarea children.
At its discretion, the International Jury may also award additional
special prizes. The Jury has the right to withhold an award where no
entry, in its view, meets the standards for recognition.
On Saturday, September 19th at 7:30 pm, the Jury will announce the
award-winning films during the OIAF’s Awards Ceremony at Saint
Brigid’s Centre for Arts. A Best of Ottawa 2015 screening (a selection
of the Festival’s award-winning films) will be screened on Sunday,
September 20th at 7:00 pm and 9:15pm at the ByTowne Cinema.
Pendant le festival, trois jurys officiels, mêlés au grand public lors
des séances, jugent les courts-métrages, longs-métrages et films
pour enfants en compétition. Les membres des jurys des courts et
longs-métrages sont choisis parmi la communauté internationale de
l’animation. Les jurys des films pour enfants sont, eux, sélectionnés
dans la région d’Ottawa.
S’ils le jugent opportun, les membres du jury international peuvent
également décerner des prix spéciaux supplémentaires. Ils peuvent,
enfin, refuser de décerner un prix, s’ils considèrent qu’aucun film
sélectionné, ne répond aux critères d’évaluation.
Le samedi 19 septembre, à 19h30, le jury annoncera les films primés
lors de la cérémonie de remise des prix au Centre des arts St Brigid.
La sélection des films primés sera projetée le dimanche 20 au cinéma
Bytowne à 19h et 21h15.

Chris Dainty is an animator, director, and ice carver
from Ottawa. Chris co-founded Dainty Productions Inc.
in 2006, which focuses on creating 2D animation. From
animating Cookie Monster and the Sesame Street gang
for 2 Nintendo Wii games, to producing animation for
Dino Dan and Odd Squad for TV, to producing content
for Leap Frog’s Leap Pad as well as PS3, iOS and Android,
Chris and his company have animated for screens of
all sizes. For the past 7 years, Chris has animated the
sponsorship reel for OIAF. His hobbies include ice carving,
drone flying, and talking in 3rd person.
Chris Dainty est un animateur, réalisateur et sculpteur sur
glace d’Ottawa. Chris a co-fondé Dainty Productions Inc.

Maral Mohammadian is a Producer at the National Film
Board of Canada’s English Program Animation Studio. She
was recruited by the NFB in 2006 as the first associate
producer of Hothouse, the celebrated apprenticeship
program for emerging animation filmmakers. Her most
recent film is an innovative animation/live action hybrid
named The Weatherman and the Shadowboxer and it
won the Best Canadian Short Film at the 2014 Toronto
International Film Festival. Prior to moving to Montreal,
Maral was director of the Television Animation Conference
at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
Maral Mohammadian est productrice à l’Office national

Saschka Unseld directed & produced numerous awardwinning shorts and commercials at Studio Soi before
joining Pixar Animation Studios in 2008. During his six
years at Pixar, he worked on Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and
Brave and wrote and directed Pixar’s The Blue Umbrella.
Recently, Saschka became Creative Director at Passion
Pictures for Commercials and Oculus Story Studio where
he helps explore the future of VR filmmaking.

Kaspar Jancis is a director of animated films, a musician,
composer, writer, lyricist and bike designer. He became
interested in comics and writing as a child, and has been
a creative member of many rock bands. He studied
filmmaking at Tallinn University and Turku Arts and Media
School (Finland), and his films (Weitzenberg Street,
Marathon, Crocodile and Villa Antropoff – co-directed
with Vladimir Lechiov) have received many international
awards. Kaspar is currently working on a stop-motion
feature, Morten on The Ship of Fools. This Estonian, Irish
and Canadian coproduction will be released in 2016.

sa plus tendre enfance, il a aussi été membre actif de

Yiorgos Tsangaris is the founder and artistic director
of Countryside Animafest Cyprus – Views of the World.
His fields of expertise are graphic arts, printmaking
and animation. As an independent artist, film curator
and lecturer, he has worked extensively with academic
departments, theatre companies, film festivals, museums
and publishing houses, contributing to the development
of several cultural institutions. His work has been
exhibited at a number of international forum such as
Biennales, festivals and graphic arts exhibitions. He is the
president of Hambis Printmaking Museum in Cyprus and
a member of the ASIFA board.
Yiorgos Tsangaris est le fondateur et directeur
artistique d’Animafest - Vues sur le Monde à Chypre.
Ses domaines d’expertise sont les arts graphiques, la
gravure et l’animation. En tant qu’artiste indépendant,
programmateur et conférencier, il a beaucoup œuvré

théâtre, festivals de cinéma, musées et maisons d’édition,
contribuant ainsi au développement de nombreuses
institutions culturelles. Son travail a été exposé dans bon
nombre de forums internationaux tels que des biennales,
festivals et expositions d’art. Il est par ailleurs président
du Hambis, le musée chypriote de la gravure et membre

Bickford
sont
incomparables et indescriptibles. Il n’a pas
son égal dans l’animation. La meilleure
comparaison que l’on pourrait faire serait
avec le free jazz d’Ornette Coleman ou
d’Albert Ayler. Rien n’est permanent dans
l’univers de Bickford. Les visages, les
hommes et les paysages se forment, se
déforment et se transforment. C’est comme
observer un enfant joyeusement plongé
dans un jeu. On n’a aucune idée de ce qui se
passe, on est juste hypnotisé par l’inventivité
pure et émerveillé de tout. On ne comprend
pas le monde de Bruce Bickford, on le vit, on
le savoure.

Bickford’s animations are incomparable and
indescribable. There is no one like him in
animation. The closest comparison might be
found in the free jazz of Ornette Coleman or
Albert Ayler. Nothing is stable in Bickford’s
universe. Heads, humans, and landscapes
form, re-form, transform. It’s like observing
a child blissfully lost in play. You don’t
have a clue what is going on, but you’re
mesmerized by the sheer inventiveness and
wonder of it all. You don’t comprehend the
world of Bruce Bickford, you experience it,
you savour it.

personal films confront relationships, rape
(The Hat), aging (Dolorosa), technology
(Accordion), war (Robes of War), identity
(The Artist), and addiction (Soif) in
uncompromising, enlightening, provocative

d’outils
numériques
à
disposition des animateurs, les techniques
d’animation d’aujourd’hui sont de plus en
plus informatisées. Parfois, le résultat nous
montre une esthétique numérique, d’autres
fois cela nous donne l’impression d’une
production plus traditionnelle avec des
procédés analogiques. Craie, peinture, sable,
argile, marionnettes, crayons sur papier;
toutes ces techniques peuvent être vraiment
convaincantes en étant simulées grâce aux
merveilleuses technologies sophistiquées.
Rien de mal à cela, bien sûr, mais cela devient
moins fréquent de nos jours de découvrir
des courts-métrages d’animation créés
de manière entièrement traditionnelle. Ce
programme dépeint et célèbre des films
contemporains dont les réalisateurs ont
bravé le côté fastidieux et rébarbatif de
l’animation traditionnelle dans notre monde
aux solutions numériques. Il rend hommage
aux bonnes vieilles techniques d’animation.

With so many digital tools at an animator’s
disposal, today’s animation techniques are
becoming increasingly computer-based.
Sometimes the result shows off its digital
aesthetic, and other times films digitally
simulate the look of analog materials. Chalk,
paint, sand, clay, puppets, pen on paper;
all these techniques can be convincingly
simulated digitally with wonderful and
sophisticated technologies. Nothing wrong
with that, of course, but as it’s less common
these days to come across an animated
short created completely IRL. This program
showcases and celebrates contemporary
films in which directors braved the tedium
and mess of analog animation in a world of
digital solutions, and aims to pay homage to
ye animation techniques of olde.

The wild and wacky, absurdist drenched
melodramas of Estonian animator, musician,
writer and bike designer, Kaspar Jancis have it
all: nudists, opera singers and pet crocodiles
(Crocodile); mobsters and perverted priests
(Villa Antropoff); terrorists, weirdo sculptors
and artists (Marathon); murderers and piano
players (Piano); espionage (Weitzenberg
Street) and, of course, love. Littered with an
assortment of pop culture references and
inside jokes, Jancis’ memorable group of
oddball characters are really just seeking –
much like contemporary Estonia – to carve
out their own space in this wild west of an

en 2000, il est le premier site Internet à
permettre à tout un chacun de télécharger
du contenu animé sur le Web (inférieur à 5

inventifs, controversés et hilarants sur le

When Newgrounds launched its Flash Portal
in 2000, it was the first site on the Internet
to ever allow anyone and everyone to upload
animated content to the web (as long as
it was under 5mb). What followed was a
revolution. Newgrounds became home of
some of the most inventive, controversial
and hilarious content on the web, all created
for basically no reason by a community of
professionals, amateurs, teenagers, trolls
and early experiments from some of the
biggest animators working today.

Drac’s pack is back for an all-new monster
comedy adventure in Sony Pictures
Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 2! Everything
seems to be changing for the better at Hotel
Transylvania... Dracula’s rigid monster-only
hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up
its doors to human guests. But behind closed
coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable
half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis,
isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So
while Mavis is busy visiting her human
in-laws with Johnny – and in for a major
cultural shock of her own – “Vampa” Drac
enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and
Griffin to put Dennis through a “monsterin-training” boot camp. But little do they
know that Drac’s grumpy and very old, old,
old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family
visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out
that his great-grandson is not a pure blood
– and humans are now welcome at Hotel
Transylvania – things are going to get batty!

Film Adventurer Karel Zeman est un film
biographique qui retrace la vie, le travail
et l’importance de ce génie du cinéma. Il
nous emmène dans l’arrière-boutique du
pionnier du truquage. Des cinéastes actuels
du Japon jusqu’à l’Amérique sont interrogés
pour savoir pourquoi ses films sont toujours
présents et bien souvent inégalés. Terry
Gilliam, Tim Burton, Koji Yamamura, Kosei
Ono et d’autres nous parlent de leur
inspiration par Karel Zeman. Son film Le
monde fabuleux de Jules Verne est sorti
dans 70 pays, diffusé dans 96 cinémas
rien qu’à New York. Zeman était un grand
solitaire dans son domaine, il a créé de ses
mains son propre monde, uniquement à
partir de son imagination. Dernière chose
dans ce film : actuellement les étudiants en
animation à l’Université de Zlin recréent trois
des meilleures scènes de Zeman, en utilisant

Film Adventurer Karel Zeman is a
biographical film that looks back at the
life, work and significance of the genius of
world cinema. It looks into the kitchen of
the film tricks pioneer. We interview today’s
filmmakers from Japan to America to find
out why his films are still alive and in many
ways unsurpassed. Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton,
Koji Yamamura, Kosei Ono and others talk
about their inspiration by Karel Zeman. His
film The Fabulous World of Jules Verne
was released in 70 countries, showing in
96 theaters in New York alone. Zeman was
in his field of absolute solitaire, he created
his own handmade world based purely from
his imagination. There is one more story in
the film - nowadays students of animation
at Zlin university remake three of Zeman´s
best scenes using old ways of making the
special effects, how do they succeed?

L’histoire de l’ingénieur Simon Hart – basée sur son
journal – se déroule à un moment où l’humanité
est muée par le progrès inévitable. De nouvelles
inventions ont poussé comme des champignons
après la pluie et ont mené de mauvaises personnes
à en abuser ... C‘est le premier film de Karel Zeman
inspiré par Jules Verne, dans lequel le réalisateur
s’essaie à un nouveau style de direction artistique,
qu‘il développera ensuite encore plus. Les
décors de cette histoire romanesque, le design
remarquable et la musique novatrice de Zdeněk
Liška – contribuent tous au rendu unique de
cette palpitante histoire étayée par un deuxième
niveau de lecture contre la guerre. L’histoire
en noir et blanc est profondément influencée
par les gravures classiques d’Édouard Riou et
de Léon Bennett - illustrateurs originaux des
romans de Jules Verne. Le film tchécoslovaque le
plus renommé de l‘Histoire a été un phénomène
mondial en 1958. Rien qu‘à New York, il a été
projeté simultanément dans 96 salles de cinéma.
Cette aventure fantastique a remporté plusieurs
prix prestigieux, dont le Grand Prix EXPO 58 à
Bruxelles. La restauration numérique du film fait
partie du projet Restoring The World of Fantasy,
initiative commune entre la Fondation du Film
tchèque, le Musée Karel Zeman et la Télévision
tchèque.

The story of the engineer Simon Hart - as recorded
in his diary - takes place at a time when humanity
was driven by a belief in inevitable progress. New
inventions emerged like mushrooms after the rain
and attracted criminals to abuse them... This is the
first of Karel Zeman’s films to be inspired by Jules
Verne, in which the director tries out a new style of
art direction, which he was later to develop even
further. The story-book sets, striking design and
innovative music of Zdeněk Liška – all contribute
to the unique appearance of this thrilling story
with its anti-war subtext. The black and white
narrative is deeply influenced by the classic
engravings of Édouard Riou and Léon Bennett the original illustrators of Verne’s novels. The most
successful Czechoslovakian film in history, which
became a global phenomenon in 1958. In New
York alone it was screened simultaneously in 96
cinemas. This fantasy adventure won a number
of prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix
at EXPO 58 in Brussels. The digital restoration of
the film Invention for Destruction is a part of the
project Restoring The World of Fantasy. Restoring
The World of Fantasy is a joint project of The
Czech Film Foundation, Karel Zeman Museum and
Czech Television.

Michèle Cournoyer is one of Canada’s foremost creators
of animated film. After working independently for several
years, during which she made six films inspired by the
Dada movement, she joined the NFB in the early 1990s. Her
powerful yet sensitive style, based on metamorphosis, was
honed over this period. Her films include The Hat (1999),
Accordion (2004), Robes of War (2008), and Soif (2014).

Kaspar Jancis has been illustrating, drawing and writing
stories since he was a small Estonian. His first moving
pictures debuted in the corners of his school notebooks.
Later in his school years, his brother’s friend, who was a
member of a film club, helped him make a short plasticine
puppet animated film. This was followed by a two-year
period as a working youth, which was not particularly
educational, but was brimming with adventures. Since that
time he’s done a lot of stuff in animation, music and bike
design.

Bruce Bickford was born in 1947 in Seattle Washington. He
began animating clay in the summer of 1964 at the age of
17. He graduated from high school in 1965; and engaged
in military service from 1966 to 1969. Upon his return he
resumed animation, and did his first line animation in 1970,
then in 1973 he went looking for work in Los Angeleswhere he met Frank Zappa. He worked for him from 1974
through 1980. Afterwards, he returned to Seattle and
resumed animating mostly his own personal work.

THE IRON DEVELOPER
A live development exercise where an artist/
writer creative team tweaks a concept
based on real-time curve-balls thrown at
them by a development person. Starting out
with a character and logline, a development
executive will put the creatives through
the paces of aging it up, making it genderneutral, adding a second-screen component,
scaling the animation back to fit a budget
cut, etc. This is an exercise to give an idea
of what happens in the real world to the
concepts that come in the door.

and Creative Director at Eat Your Lunch,
an LA based broadcast and digital media
studio.
Un exercice en direct où un membre
d’une équipe créative montre comment il
peut réagir à une demande lancée par la
production. En partant d’un personnage et
d’un synopsis, l’animateur épurera son travail
au fur et à mesure pour parvenir à un résultat

tutorial on various morphing techniques he
has developed over the years. Using simple

TED-Ed repose sur le credo de TED «<les

avec des enseignants et des artistes du
monde entier pour créer des “leçons qui
méritent d’être partagées”. TED-Ed associe

réalisateurs et studios pour produire des
leçons animées en format court sur une
large palette de sujets. Chaque leçon est
publiée sur YouTube et diffusée en ligne,

TED-Ed lessons are

used in classrooms around the world. This
presentation will include a screening of
selected work, followed by a discussion of
TED-Ed’s production process and some of
the unique creative challenges faced when
creating animation for educational purposes.

TAC (THE ANIMATION CONFERENCE)
The Animation Conference is North America’s only
event that lets you pitch, network and keep up with
the industry trends all while giving you access to the
most creative, original and innovative animation out
there. Targeting an audience of 300 people, TAC brings
together key players in North America and International
markets, providing a space for effective networking,
practical information exchange and trade in an intimate
environment. The OIAF is North America’s oldest and
largest animation event and among the most respected
worldwide. TAC 2015 will be held September 16-18 in
Ottawa at The Fairmont Château Laurier.
Le congrès de l’animation est le seul évènement
nord-américain permettant de se rencontrer, développer
son réseau et être au fait de dernières tendances de
l’industrie de l’animation, tout en ayant accès aux formes
d’animation les plus créatives, inédites et innovatrices.

BLOW UP: DRAWINGS BY MICHÈLE COURNOYER
Out of the archives and into the light of
the Festival’s Chez Ani. The OIAF presents
a selection of drawings from The Hat,
Accordion, Robes of War and Soif. These
drawings represent her most potent oeuvre.
She undertakes difficult subject matter
from alcoholism to sexual abuse along
with other violations of the mind and body.
Likewise, her process is connected to the
body, she uncovers a more real and physical
relationship by animating on ink and paper.
These drawings made big stand alone as
works of art from an important Canadian
artist.
Sortie des archives et mise à l’honneur
Chez Ani durant le Festival. L’OIAF présente
une sélection de dessins issus du Chapeau,
d’Accordéon, de Robes de guerre et de Soif.
Ces dessins représentent toute la puissance
de l’œuvre de Cournoyer. Elle aborde les
sujets lourds de l’alcoolisme, des abus
sexuels et d’autres violations de l’esprit
et du corps. Sa démarche est elle-même
reliée au corps, développant une relation
plus concrète et physique dans l’animation

HUT: THE GENESIS OF THE OIAF 15 POSTER AND SIGNAL FILM
In 2014, a group of animators comprised of
Caleb Wood, Dylan Hayes, Derick Wycherly,
Africanus Okokon and Ted Wiggin created
an experimental animation film/installation
during the OIAF. That original installation
was the basis for this year’s poster and
festival trailer.

NUIT BLANCHE
After your post-award cocktail, head out
to Nuit Blanche Ottawa+ Gatineau. It’s one
night per year, dusk-until-dawn celebration
of multidisciplinary art and local culture that
takes place across multiple venues and within
the cityscape of Ottawa and Gatineau.
At 9pm, you might want to head to Parliament
Hill for “Northern Lights” a projection that
happens right on the walls of this gothic
home of Canadian politics. This sound and
light show is a thrilling thematic journey
through Canada’s history.
OIAF is also staying up all night! At the Arts
Court, visit the Michèle Cournoyer exhibit,
take in one of her films and have a drink at
the Chez Ani. At Saint Brigid’s join us for our
famous DANCE PARTY in the Kildare Room
with Ottawa music scene’s best pal DJ Davey.
We will also be screening Theodore Ushev’s
Sonámbulo upstairs until 2am.
Après avoir fêté la remise des prix lors du
cocktail, faites un tour à la Nuit Blanche
d’Ottawa et de Gatineau. Une seule fois par an,
du crépuscule à l’aurore, les arts de tous types
et la culture locale sont à l’honneur, prenant
place dans de nombreux lieux à travers
Ottawa et Gatineau.
A 21h, rendez-vous à la colline du Parlement
pour les “Northern Lights” projetées à même
la façade gothique du bâtiment, fief des
figures politiques du pays. Ce spectacle de

Long and Madi PIller as part of a program focusing on the
VR technology. Experience animator/artist/filmmaker Brett
Long’s stop-motion animation adventure in Panoramic 3D.
Interact with artist/Filmmaker Madi Piller’s new work that
experiments with 35 mm and Oculus Rift. Long, Piller and
others working with the technology discuss their pieces at

Join TED-Ed animators to create a
collaborative animated lesson in a handson animation workshop. Using a variety
of handmade and stop-motion animation
techniques, we will explore the principles of
animation and how they can be applied to
educational, entertaining content. We will
work in small groups, each led by a TEDEd animation director who will guide each
team through the entire production process.
At the end of the day, all groups will have
contributed to the creation of an entire short
animated lesson!
