FRANCIS DUGGAN 12 ACCOUNTABILITY JUSTIFICATION VERANTWOORDING Place of Memory Lieu de mémoire Lieu de mémoire I first visited the beautiful location of World Art Delft at the Rotterdamseweg 205 in 1999. It’s a place where borders are crossed. Borders regarding cultures, art disciplines, age, tendencies in society, and emotions. It is a place where one can feel the love for art, culture, nature, architecture and for the history of mankind. A place with precious memories situated in the landscape the open polder of Midden-Delfland offers. Engine of development in World Art Delft is inventor, founder and director-curator since the start Paula Kouwenhoven. Over the last 15 years she has, together with her husband Jeroen van Schie, organised over 70 exhibitions, symposiums and educational projects at World Art Delft. Painting, sculpting, applied art, literature, poetry and music, often interdisciplinary with national and international artists. Many times, Kouwenhoven is not only the curator of the exhibitions, but she’s also participating in the symposiums and the resulting exhibitions as a visual artist. Nevertheless, her work was never the centre of attention. It’s now over forty years ago that Paula Kouwenhoven decided to fully commit herself to visual arts. An ample painted and drawn oeuvre has arisen since. Characteristic for her work is the central role reality plays. Every time again, reality forms the point of departure for the artist. The source of inspiration is almost always related to the location. The memories of all the places, visited during the many travels, have systematically been registered in dozens of sketchbooks, making them a sort of visual diaries. Without realizing it, Paula lives and works in a truly Benedictine way. With a relaxed dedication, she takes care of her beloved ones, her friends, her colleagues in arts and the many guests, always sharing generously with her hearty hospitability. She is true to her resolution to flourish where your seeds have been planted, with good stewardship of the location. Especially the vow of Stabilitas is applicable to her. Paula Kouwenhoven masters the art of staying persistently steady and standing straight whilst fully being in motion. It is a privilege to be able to contribute to her Stabilitas Loci. Daniëlle H.A.C. Lokin, Midwolde, Juli 2013 13 THE RULE OF STABILITY The Rule of Saint Benedict of Nursia (480 – 547) Saint Benedict is generally considered to be the father of monastic life in the Latin church. He was born in Nursia, Italy. Aged fourteen he joined a group of hermits. He later founded his own community on the Monte Cassino and wrote a code of conduct regarding the communal monastic life. The Benedictine monks have distinguished themselves by not only preaching Christianity, but by also cultivating land, draining swamps and building dykes. Their presence has always been, and still is, creating, caring and guarding. 14 The Rule of Saint Benedict is renowned for its balance and its wisdom. According to the Rule of Saint Benedict, the monastic life consists of a very balanced rhythm of eight hours of prayer, eight hours of work and eight hours of rest. Benedictine monks lead a life of prayer, physical labour, simplicity, hospitality and obedience1. A Benedictine monk takes three vows when entering a monastery: Obedientia (obedience), Conversio morum (change of habits) and Stabilitas (stability). In a metaphoric way, Stabilitas means resoluteness and enduring alliance, a persevering attachment, a maintained and stable commitment, an exploration of stable values and fundamental principles2. With his Rule, Saint Benedict emphasises the importance of the stabilitas loci, the attachment to a place with the obligation of monks to leave the monastery grounds as little as possible; living, working and praying in the same environment. ‘If possible, a monastery must be constructed in such a way that everything is at hand: water, mill, garden, bakery. In that case, the monks don’t have to leave the monastery, because that would be bad for their soul.’ Therefore, that place is arranged and maintained with great care, in order to make it possible for later generations to enjoy the good gifts of God’s creation. 17 18 STABILITAS LOCI THE RULE OF STABILITY: Finding a Happy Home LIFE VIE LEVEN Delft, place of birth October 19th, 1953, Paula Kouwenhoven was born in Delft, daughter of Piet Kouwenhoven and Paula Kouwenhoven-Petersen. She was the youngest of five children. Steady in her own place in the playpen, from a young age on Paula junior creates her own universe. Her mother remembers her with a piece of paper and some pencils, contently colouring and drawing. As a toddler she kept her space in an orderly fashion, and was very happy when her mother systematically cleared her toys and things. This actually hasn’t really changed. Even today, Paula senior weekly clears the living room, the bedroom and the studio. Thus, giving Kouwenhoven the room to focus heart and soul on her work. Drawing and painting is, as it has always been, the first thing she does. Doing this, she can retreat and reclose from the rowdy outer world. From young age on, little Paula shows to be not only an artist, but an entrepreneur as well. In primary school she imagines plays, organises picnics in the polder or builds a circus in the shed, sticks posters of her own design on trees to announce the show and asks an entrance fee. And she regularly discloses her teaching talents. At a very young age, friends get lessons in drawing, art and culture. The home is most hospitable. Everyone is always invited and even staying over for dinner without a notice is never a problem. Being the apple of the eye of father Piet, Paula profits from her status as the youngest of the family. Thuis is gastvrijheid zonder beperkingen. Royal Academy of Art, the Hague In the build-up to the education at the academy at which Paula is accepted at the age of 24 Académie Royale des Arts Plastiques, La Haye Avant de faire ses études à l’académie où Paula est admise à l’âge de 24 ans, elle fait Dessiner et peindre c’était, et c’est toujours la première chose qu’elle entreprend. Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten, Den Haag In aanloop naar de opleiding aan de academie waar Paula op 24 jarige leeftijd wordt toegelaten, studeert zij aan de Vrije Academie, maar de 19 20 she studies at the Vrije Academie, but it is too non-committal. In her opinion, technical skills and truly learning the handicraft don’t get enough attention. In 1977, a portfolio built up with care gives Kouwenhoven direct access to the curriculum of arts at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Courses from Rien Bout, Jan van Spronsen, Kees Schumacher, Auke de Vries, Simon Koenen, Cees Vlag and Marianne Smit moulded her. She has precious memories of the latter. Smit teaches her caring for her materials and her studio. It’s not that important how big the studio is, but the more how it’s arranged and set up: a steady place for brushes, paint, painter’s easel and stock. Smit also highlights the importance of presentation of the works. ‘If you don’t respect your own work, you can’t ask others for respect for it, so you have to start with that.’ The lessons in drawing portraits and models and lessons in the composition of figures by Rien Bout (1937-2003) were, and in a metaphorical way still are, of big importance to painter Paula Kouwenhoven. He was a teacher with heart and soul, could explain how to set up a composition, how your use of colours is and how to build up tension in your work very well. He especially mastered the art of omission as no one else did, in which he could drive and tempt Paula to the limit. Pijnacker, the first atelier in a little school Paula Kouwenhoven is one of the few who have their own atelier whilst studying at the academy. It’s located at the Oostlaan, where her father used to go to school. It’s a precious place, right next to the cemetery where her grandmother is buried. The atelier is perfect in height and light. The room is four meters high and there are large windows allowing the light to fill the room. Kouwenhoven mostly makes paintings of matters, etches and lithographs. Working with etching plates and presses is tough workmanship and polishing the stones even proves meditating. ‘Make sure you always go to your studio, even if you don’t have inspiration. Clean up, tighten canvases, and polish stones or wax etching plates’ Rien Bout said. ‘If you really do this eventually inspiration will start to flow.’ des études à la Vrije Academie, où le manque d’engagement lui est trop grand. « Arrange-toi pour toujours aller à ton atelier, même si tu n’as pas d’inspiration. Dans ce cas vrijblijvendheid is daar groot. Delft, Oude Langendijk Kouwenhoven is a successful independent artist. Her professional practice flourishes, she has exhibitions early on, regularly sells works and gives some courses. The BKR (Beeldende Kunst Regeling, arts regulation from the former ministry of Culture, Recreation and Welfare) is not an option to her. Her parents say: ‘If you can’t make a living from your paintings you’d better do something else; you are not going to beg for money at a welfare institution or an organization like the BKR.’ Of course, her father does support her by buying works from her and naturally her mother is part of her life as an artist. After her final exams she competes for an assignment from the Peugeot car company. It concerns a reproducible work of art that will be given as a gift when a Peugeot 205 is bought. Paula sends in three monotypes3 and wins the competition. 400 to 500 pieces of art have to be produced and, hence, the etching technique is chosen. At first, the etching plates prove unable to produce such an amount of etches; the metal is too soft. By adding steel to the plates the problem is solved. Producing such a huge amount of prints requires an enormous amount of work, so Paula Kouwenhoven senior helps out. Together, mother and daughter print everything. It seems to be ideal to have a single location on which living and working can be combined. The acquisition of a house at the Oude Langendijk in Delft offers a shopspace with display-window and studio. On the first floor there’s a home with a large kitchen. To Kouwenhoven, drawing is ‘the best thing in the World, but as much as good cooking. If an artist can’t cook, there’s something missing in his talent.’ Cooking for large groups becomes her second passion. On one of her diary sketches for a model study of a woman a shopping list is written. Initially, the atelier in the school in Pijnacker remains available, giving Paula the luxury of having two workplaces: a graphic atelier and a painting atelier. However, after a while, this gives a torn feeling. Making it necessary to concentrate the working as an artist to a single place. She chooses to use only the atelier at the Oude Langendijk in Delft. 21 the contact with the world around her, but the illumination in the studio is very poor. It’s nice to work close to home, but it demands a stronger discipline to stay at work. So, end of the eighties, Kouwenhoven starts looking for an atelier away from home again. 22 The Hague, Surinamestraat An atelier in a house located on the Suriname straat in The Hague is chosen. It’s a beautiful room with a high ceiling, high windows and many lovely authentic architectural details. The Surinamestraat is considered the most beautiful street in The Hague. It contains many municipal monuments, jointly forming a very well preserved architectonic ensemble, which is characteristic for the second half of the 19th century4. Kouwenhoven enjoys the architectural surroundings. Soon, she gets in touch with the local residents such as art-dealer John Hoogsteder, art historian Marieke Tiethoff, collector Casper Kouw, Johannes Keyzer and former officer Max van der Hoog. Inspiring friendships result. Oude Langendijk remains her residence and the atelier becomes a gallery, especially for starting artists, in order to give them a boost. This characterizes the artist. In the studio, she reads Charley Toorop’s biography, which inspires her to work together instead of everyone for himself and completely individually. Hence, the wish to gather a selection of artists around her to power on is born. But eventually, isolation is needed to work and perform. Only then work that can resist self-criticism can originate. The Hague and Ottawa The city of The Hague is twinned with Canadian city Ottawa. In 1992, Kouwenhoven, considered an artist from The Hague because of her studio in that city, gets the opportunity to participate in an exchange program. She exchanges ateliers with a Canadian artist during six weeks. The encounter with the Works of the ‘Group of Seven’5 is impressive. The city itself however is hardly inspiring. On the other hand the contacts with colleagues are. Their way of work regarding public relations and marketing is very good for Paula’s entrepreneurship. Her endroit. In 1992 heeft Kouwenhoven eveneens een work is presented in the Ward Art Gallery in Ottawa. In 1992, Kouwenhoven also has an important solo-exhibition in Huis de Voorst in Eefde. The official inauguration is done by Royal Commissioner of Gelderland Jan Terlouw. To make it complete, the opening event is followed by a grand party in black tie with lots of delicious dishes. Almost all the works in the exhibition are sold, but the rent for the atelier in the Surinamestraat is so high the artist needs to give courses in order to get some extra revenues. (Re-)searching countries and places One or more study trips per year have been on the Kouwenhoven’s schedule for the last twenty years. She has a special interest in landscapes, buildings, portraits, archaeological findings and sculpture. A visit to an archaeological museum or an archaeological site is always part of the trip. In such visits, Paula especially looks for ‘statues of woman fertility, a primal form that was the same everywhere.6’ Sketches of these statues form the basis of a series of painting between 1993 and 2003. développement de l’entrepreneur en Paula. Mexico, going around Summer of 1993, together with her husband Jeroen van Schie, Kouwenhoven makes her first trip to Mexico, stimulated by her teacher Rien Bout who had worked there in the 80s. She is impressed by the buildings of leading Mexican architect Luis Ramiro Barragán Morfín (1902 - 1988)7. Barragán’s architectural style can be described as modern and minimalistic, with influences of Mexican villages, for example regarding high, coloured walls. Landscape and the use of natural materials have a central role. To Barragán, who tends to call himself an ‘architect of landscape’, nature and water must be integrated in the environment and in the residence. Many years later, Paula will include these elements in the requirements for the ultimate atelier she will get designed. Delft, Rotterdamseweg, destination found With the acquisition of Rotterdamseweg 205 the artist’s dream comes true. Jeroen told Paula’s niece, because she was looking for a house, there’s a farm for sale in the polder, asking her: ‘doesn’t that suit you?’ Waarop haar echtgenoot antwoordt: 23 action is essential, as Kouwenhoven counters the question: ‘Wouldn’t it suit us?’ Her husband replies: ‘If you want to, I can go and ask.’ It turns out that a proposition has to be made to the seller, Recreatieschap MiddenDelfland, with a hint of what they’d want to develop on the exact location. At first, this proposition is limited to three pages. Over 180 applicants respond. Ten of them get an invitation to make a deployed proposition. The plan of Paula and Jeroen is chosen and they are granted the acquisition of the farm. The realization of the plan still is the classical example of speed of execution to MiddenDelfland. Not only the construction is very quick, but the goals of the ‘recreatieschap’ are immediately overachieved. The cooperation of Paula Kouwenhoven and Jeroen van Schie is very fruitful. The builder can realize what the artist invents. A unique place for the presentation of international art with room for educational projects arises. Art, nature and hospitability meet in World Art Delft and the established in 2012 Land Art Delft. 24 World Art Delft World Art Delft (WAD) is an art centre, offering a stage to contemporary art in all its forms. The gallery as well as the sculpture garden are very accessible to visitors of all ages and for home-based as well as foreign artists. For this purpose, different exhibition are offered, from individual artists as well as from groups of artists. Sometimes, an exhibition is the result of a symposium. WAD organises such a symposium, or working lab, in its own location, or sometimes abroad, as previously in Indonesia and Japan. On these occasions a group of invited artists from the Netherlands as well as from abroad works together on a theme, getting inspiration from the theme and from one another’s culture. WAD also offers music and poetry. Once a year a poetry-event in which renowned as well as less famous poets give a presentation or perform a show. Over the last couple of years, nature plays a more prominent role in the policy of World Art Delft. Art as a magnifying glass of nature is the motto. Sustainability, respect for the landscape and the development of Land art, art in nature, are the main ingredients for a ? ». Regularly, an educational project is linked to an exhibition. Youngsters in primary, secondary or advanced education, as well as students form universities (such as Delft University of Technology and Leibniz Universität Hannover) have the possibility to participate in these projects. Such a project has to be cognitive, receptive, and active.8 Treading waters The phase of construction on the Rotterdamseweg is very complicated for artist Kouwenhoven. She assumes she can do the artistry on the side, but finds out organizing World Art Delft and running the business takes a lot of energy. During the period 19982008 her own work is on hold. About this, she now says: ‘I thought I’d do that on the side, but I’ve learnt my lesson.’ To be able to properly work she needs her own space. Order, calmness and focussed attention in a place that offers certainty and stability are necessary and can only be guaranteed by having an atelier at a certain distance from the domicile, the gallery and the several workingand conference rooms. In November 2009, Jacob Fokkema inaugurated “het Atelier”, built by Jeroen van Schie and designed by architect Teske van Royen. Besides rooms for seminars and conferences, the building now houses a beautiful atelier with windows faced north and continued in the flat roof, making the light entering the room from the side and from above. Here, Kouwenhoven finds the moderate disposition of life at the service of art. She recognises the importance of the stabilitas loci in Saint Benedicts rule of life: living, working and creating in a single location. In de periode 19982008 staat haar eigen werk ‘on hold.’ 25 26 WORKS ŒUVRES WERKEN 1973-1983 Realism, naturalism and intimacy Initially, Paula Kouwenhoven chose still lives and figure studies as subjects for her painting. As such, the beautiful litho Zonder Titel (No Title) comes about (image p. 40). The convincing display of texture, of the hand on the thigh and the light falling on the knuckles are striking. Meticulously and very patiently the artist brought the expression on the surface of the hand to life in the etching. Kouwenhoven analyses the exact value of the light, the highlights and reflections, the shades and cast shadows on the gouache on paper Zonder Titel (No Title) with sparkling light on a hanger, a cast of a foot and a ginger jar (image p. 39). The still life with jug, mug, bread rolls and eggs, called Zonder Titel (No Title image. p. 38) as well, is a first exploration with oil pastel on paper of how a composition can be determined by the placement of objects. The elements aren’t placed in the middle, but slightly eccentrically; striking ratios are not seldom close to the golden rule. A bust on a base is the point of focus in a series of pen-and-ink drawings. By subtly placing the planes, a suggestion of space is created. Kouwenhoven develops a personal technique; her sensitivity to colour brings her to blur black lines and planes. By diluting, ink tones of grey are created, on which hatching is added with a finer pen on top later. The results have a richness of nuances of clarity as well as tones. On the way to abstraction At the Royal Academy of Art her traditional, realistic compositions give way to a more deduced representation of reality. Reality is the source of inspiration and the starting point over and over again, but the experimenting with partitioning of planes and the effects of working with light-dark elements are more contrasting than the figuration. In the series Solitude I, II, III and IV an unmistakable tendency towards abstraction is visible (images p. 48 to 51). Here, Kouwenhoven chooses to work with acrylic on paper. Op een monotone ondergrond van loodgrijs, Black planes are placed on a monotonous background of lead grey, cadmium red or royal blue, getting an effect of space due to the solitary figure located centrally in the composition. At this moment, only the structure and the set-up of the composition remain important; the model, the partitioning of light and shade and the effects of depth play a minor part in this. The artist tries to represent the essence of a structure in a limited amount of image elements and especially seems to look for a sort of scheme. What captivates her is the rhythm of the structures in a composition. Only the most essential and typical planes are shown in an intense analysis of motives of images. Producing in numbers Kouwenhoven is fascinated by the possibilities offered by graphical techniques during her education. She experiments with these techniques and manages to come to strong, layered images. The, usually, limited-editions are widely distributed, showing the recognition her works gets. Without a doubt, the keen way she uses the classical techniques in order to get the required contemporary result helps. Kouwenhoven looks for possibilities to make images that show the same analytical explorations of image structures using the monotype3 and the classic graphical techniques such as the etching and lithography. Doing this, she’s especially interested in the rhythm of sequential, identical motives of images and the contrast between light and shade. The compositions are set up with powerful lines. By subtle variation of colours, the partitioning of planes not only seem to increase density and separate, but it also creates a stratification that gives a sense of depth to the composition. She always prints the images in multiples as well as the monotypes herself, the help of Paula Kouwenhoven being indispensable to do this. At the beginning of the eighties, Kouwenhoven more and more prefers a square image carrier. The square isn’t restrictive to her, but forms the grammar for an almost endless language of shapes with continuously changing techniques and hence various appearances. 1983-1993 (Ver-)plaatsing Vernieuwing en verkenning van andere mogelijkheden karakteriseren het werk van 27 28 1983-1993 (De-)placement During this period, innovation and exploration of different possibilities are characteristic for the work of Kouwenhoven. She keeps looking for new paths and experiments with techniques and materials. They are series of purely abstract compositions, with the image set up from a monochrome clear background (images p. 58 to 67). Partly covering shapes of dark, warm colours marked out by strong, dynamic lines are placed. The works are set up atmospherically, showing the effect of depth only by small gradations of tone, partition and colour. Kouwenhoven expresses mood and feelings using layering of colours. The same language of shapes can be recognized in everything the artist makes. These are paintings, drawings, etchings, linocuts and lithographic prints. This diversity shows a great interest in the technical aspects of art. She works on big as well as on small formats, with acrylic or oil paint. About this, Kouwenhoven says: ‘I like to work with acrylic on a paper or linen image carrier. Due to its shorter drying time, acrylic allows a more spontaneous and direct way of working. Oil paint is intense regarding colour, one can attain special effects by working wet-in-wet and it has a deeply absorbing colour you can’t create using acrylic; diffuse black. Using oil paint you always have to wait for the paint to dry, this distance also gives the result of layering / layered effect. This way, the work is growing more organically than it is quickly set up. I don’t have a preference for acrylic or oil paint.’ Each work by Paula Kouwenhoven is the report of a separate experiment, a discovery journey through the area in which twodimensional and three-dimensional shapes come together. Every canvas, every etching has its own rhythmic and calls for different associations. Fairy-like elements form recognizable, realistic representation, showing a new reality, set up from the opposites in colour and shape. Also, black is rediscovered as a colour (image p. 70). 1993-2003 Convertible places The sketches of situations, landscapes and abstraites dans laquelle l’image est construite sur un fond clair et monotone (images p. 58 à 67). De portraits noted down in her sketchbooks on her study trips find a conversion in organic shapes in graphics and paintings. Figure comes back in her work, but despite the many discernible elements, many canvases have a high level of abstraction. The objects are painted concretely, realistically; the human element -ruling or in the background- is almost always present. The principle is always that Kouwenhoven needs to have a story, a feeling, something that concerns her, but that isn’t at the detriment of the shape. She tries to create an illusion on a flat surface. For every canvas she sets herself a problem -related to paintingand tries to find an imaginary solution. To make her story an interesting one she uses shape, colour and composition. In the end, it’s mostly about the shape by eliminating more and more elements and reaching the essence. Kouwenhoven’s paintings have a lot to do with mystics; they are about what’s underneath the everyday truth. That sounds rather religious, but religious values can’t be found in her work. However, she is well aware of the added value the things in life have. That there is a ‘direction’ in the way of life that can not be described. She realises there’s so much more than everyday reality, but that one can’t get a real grip on it, unless you submit to dreams. Kouwenhoven takes accountability of the content of her work, but this actually shows to be so abstract, the spectator can only reach the heart of it by a lot of observing and sensing. Just to find out the artist likes to lead him astray. The road to the essence of things is actually what she paints to evoke things and create concrete images of things that can’t really be seen. Often, classic shapes can be seen on her paintings, isolated on a monochrome background and purposefully placed in a different context, leading them to lead their own life. A column, a façade, a vase or a statue of fertility, all presumably independent elements placed in the area, evoke a new, mystical-magical reality. The logical order is lost and the perspective constantly changes. Paula feels a close bond with the work of painter Mark Rothko (1903-1970), renowned for his ‘color-field-paintings’. Rothko’s paintings comprise of big planes with varieties of colour, set up in different layers, parallel with other et ses tableaux. 29 30 colours. The edges of the planes are slightly odd, giving them a foggy quality, as if they are floating or hovering on the canvas. To Rothko it’s not just about the shape, but about the content. About this he says: ‘In my work it’s not about the interaction of colours or shapes or whichever relationship. To me, it’s about expressing the most fundamental emotions: the tragic, the ecstatic, or human destiny.’ superposées à d’autres couleurs. » 2003-2013 During this period of time, Kouwenhoven mostly makes a lot of square works of structures, of which the origin can be found in observations in the landscape. They’re often paintings with a subtle game of light with ochre, greys and whites that frequently form a pattern that, at first site, looks like a relief. Observation and illusion are interwoven by merging different materials. But just as much by manipulating less perceptible things, such as the effects of light and shade. She is always working from a conceptual plan, but never meekly obedient to it. In the dissection and simplification of image motives, this leads to the most essential and typical lines and planes in the composition. Interested mostly in the rhythm and the structure of the image, the artist is searching for a subtle balance between order and disorder, between colour and colourless. Even though many paintings seem to be purely abstract at first sight, reality is always at its origin. Focus and concentration Meeting Katsutomi Horiki, painter of Japanese origin who lives and works in Italy affects her. Kouwenhoven is not just impressed by his work, but especially by his working method. Regarding this, she says: ’The First time I met Horiki was in 2007. It was in Italy, in the springtime. We worked in an atelier we shared during the symposium Siviera (Verbania) at the Lake Maggiore. I had never seen Horiki’s Works before, so my first encounter was at its origination, its creation. In hindsight, this makes me feel very privileged! I remember well, this sunny studio, the silent man, the smell of turpentine, the rhythm of his strokes on the canvas. Rétrospectivement, je me sens privilégiée ! Then he looks at the result, drinks an Italian espresso from a small plastic cup, a cigarette in his hand, takes his work outside, places it on the floor in the sun and studies it for a long time, and when he’s decided what the work needs, he goes back inside and continues to work. A year later I meet Horiki again, in Holland this time, where he is one of the participating international artists at the symposium Recycle Art at World Art Delft. Later that summer I visit Horiki in his atelier; driving through fields of walnut trees and kiwi trees I arrive at his house, a lovely old farm with an atelier like Horiki himself. The place where he lives and works is orderly and quiet in an almost serene atmosphere. This is where I saw the complete collection of his works. Once again, I was impressed. There, on that sunny afternoon, I asked Horiki if it would be possible to organise a solo exhibition in Holland at World Art Delft for him and he said yes!’9 The ultimate atelier, destination Under the influence of the workplace in the new atelier, the compositions are more static, while at the same time the use of colours gets more reserved. About this, Kouwenhoven says: ‘Because of the light in this atelier, my palette has become much lighter and more monochrome, I use a lot of white now.’ The possibility to retire in quiet attention for her work leads to a tremendous increase in production. With the shape on her mind she works accurately and patiently, layer by layer, until the painting is finished. In this manufacturing process a unity of concept and workmanship is formed. Only structure and the set up of the composition seem to be of importance. While motives of images are deduced to a concise indication of the shapes, an abstract pattern of horizontal and vertical lines, touches and planes. However, Kouwenhoven gradually introduces odd, mysterious objects such as a feather; airy and feather light in the experience, positioned steadily and densely on the plane. The paintings are more and more on the same pattern. This is the square or, incidentally, the combination of two squares, thus forming a rectangle. In the paintings, she manages to solidify a range of emotions. Emotions such as drama, tension and pleasure are shown. In every work, a symbiosis of matter and illusion takes place. Illusion is present in the layering that colours the planes and that sometimes emphasises the independence of certain planes on a painting or highlights the contrasts between the planes. Along with the misleading impression of weight versus the actual lightness of the planes we are faced with an ambiguity that has an important impact on the experience when watching these works. They’re bright and light of colour, but with a very dark shade at the heart. This makes them firmly present in the space, but at the same time they are part of an illusory universe. They also show how sensitive a workmanship’s process can be, and made visible and perceivable. By giving titles to her works afterwards, she indicates the atmosphere in which the artist wants them seen. 32 Stabilitas loci, determination of place When we have an overview of the paintings and drawings of Paula Kouwenhoven, the first thing we notice is the continual, consequent development. Change and innovation never stop in her work; over and over again the artist looks for new ways to express herself, new materials and different techniques. The periods of style don’t follow each other arbitrarily; they can’t be considered in isolation, but are connected to an integral unity through a couple of themes. These themes give the work its identity and its value. Every time, the artist searches with perseverance (stabilitas) for a balance between motion and settling down, between colour and colourless, form and amorphous it gives the work a coherence. The painted compositions get a sense of depth without a third dimension being suggested. With hardly any exception nature is the starting point and the source of inspiration. The accurate way of working, the complex problems and the questions the artist sets for herself on her visual exploratory journey compel admiration. It’s this ongoing dialogue the artist has with her work that gives Paula les contrastes entre les formes et crée l’illusion. Kouwenhoven’s oeuvre a powerful personal identity. This oeuvre she has established over forty years shows the features of great workmanship and emotional involvement in the process of development. The field of tension between nature as a given and its interpretation in a drawing, a picture, a painting and occasionally a statue is tested again and again over the years and expressed in sensible way. Considering the term nature it needs to be said that to her, it’s about cultivated nature, in which human intervention has often taken place. It’s typical for her work that she always keeps the relation between observation and imagination and expresses it in the different techniques. Intuitive abstraction as a goal has never seized her. The square has been a reliable form throughout the years. She can develop images based on this. If in some works the square isn’t discernible, that follows from the process of origination in which the organic has covered up the square, but it’s always latently present. With this vision of reality around her, and its translation to images in her works, Kouwenhoven leaves us a personal and sensitive track in the autonomous art of our era. que pour elle, quand on parle nature, il s’agit de la nature cultivée, où l’intervention humaine est souvent visible. Daarmee is it possible to print several identical images. In an artistic way, and considering that a press is used, this method is considered a graphical technique. Working with a zinc, aluminium, wooden, perspex, cardboard or whatever type of pressure plate, you can arrange surprising compositions using inks and/or by laying down leafs, strings, etc. that can be printed once. 34 4. Surinamestraat 42 in The Hague was designed as a domicile in 18801883 by government architect C.H. Peters. He intended to live there himself. Above the front door a commemorative stone showing architectural attributes symbolizing the work of architects can be seen. It’s sometimes falsely said this is a symbol of freemasonry. In the interior, a few parts from a demolished building elsewhere are used. From hearsay, these parts come from the former house of Huygens at the Plein. That building stood at the place where Peters designed the (now former) ministry of Justice. After his wife’s death, Peters lived in the domicile at the Surinamestraat for a while, before moving to the Nassauplein. 5. The landscape paintings produced by this group are part of Canada’s most important cultural heritage. 6. In archaeological sites, the presence of many little female figures with the clearly shown shapes of female fecundity is striking. These are more than likely to be symbols of fertility. Originally, they were polychrome with red ochre. These are small statues of ivory, stone or clay of approximately 8-11 cm, exceptionally up to 50 cm. They are found in many places graphique. Peters ontworpen in 1880-1883. Beneath foundations of temples they are usually found as votive offerings. The eldest statue found is made of terracotta, baked at 800 °C and is dated approx. 16.000 BC. Mother Earth is a motive that returns in many mythologies, often also called Mother Nature. In this case, it is the goddess of fertility par excellence, incarnating de fertile earth or the character of fertility. As such, she’s always the mother of the other gods and is also often considered patron of motherhood. This original notion is due to the finding that earthen nature carries all life in its womb, feeds and supports life, and takes it back after perishing. In particular visions, she even carries the sky 7. 7.
