Voilà plusieurs années que Lille façonne son visage de capitale
culturelle. Une capitale qui met l’art et la création au plus près des
habitants, autant qu’elle porte de grands événements qui font sa
renommée. D’événement, il sera encore question en cet automne
2013. Et à plus d’un titre…
Car lille3000 revient au Tripostal – ce lieu qui incarne tant le
rayonnement culturel lillois – avec un nouveau rendez-vous autour
de l’art contemporain.
Car c’est à Lille que la Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, incontournable
et reconnue internationalement, fêtera ses 25 ans.
For several years now, Lille has been shaping its image as a cultural
capital. A capital that brings art and creation into the lives of its
residents while also promoting the major events for which it is famous.
In autumn 2013, there will once again be events to look forward to.
And in more ways than one...
Because lille3000 is returning to the Tripostal – the venue that so
strongly embodies Lille’s cultural reputation – for a new rendezvous
with contemporary art.
Because it is in Lille that the exemplary and internationally recognized
Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Cette invitation s’inscrit dans la dynamique que nous avons entamée
en 2007 avec la François Pinault Foundation, et poursuivie en 2009
avec la Saatchi Gallery, puis en 2011 avec le Centre National des
Arts Plastiques.
Ces expositions sont autant de rencontres avec l’art contemporain.
Elles réunissent les plus grands noms de la scène internationale avec
la création émergente. Elles nous confrontent aux questionnements
et aux révoltes que leur inspirent l’Homme et le monde.
This invitation follows in a series that we started in 2007 with the
François Pinault Foundation, continued in 2009 with the Saatchi
Gallery, and extended again in 2011 with the Centre National des
Arts Plastiques.
These exhibitions are all so many encounters with contemporary art.
They bring the biggest names on the international scene together with
emerging artists. They confront us with questions and acts of revolt
inspired by Humankind and the world.
Ces expositions racontent aussi les histoires des collections invitées.
Celles de deux grands collectionneurs privés qui ont montré, pour
la première fois « hors les murs », quelques-unes de leurs
magnifiques œuvres. Celle de l’Etat collectionneur qui dispose de
l’une des plus grandes collections publiques d’art contemporain.
These exhibits also tell the stories of private collections. Those of two
major private collectors who for the first time exhibited some of their
wonderful works “outside the walls”. That of the collector State which
holds one of the largest public collections of contemporary art.

Now we are turning to a gallery owner, and through him paying
tribute to this profession whose work, although often poorly
understood, is no less essential to art.
Our guest, Emmanuel Perrotin, ranks among the world’s most
renowned gallery owners, both for the strength of his artistic choices
and for his ability to combine exacting standards and instinct.
At the Tripostal, in looking back on his career, which is fascinating to
say the least, we are presenting a selection of artists with whom he
has worked, others whom he has always accompanied, and others
again whom he is currently exhibiting.
In this history of the Galerie Perrotin, we encounter icons of
contemporary art, including Maurizio Cattelan and Takashi
Murakami. Famous international artists like so many wonderful
discoveries. Works that have marked the last 30 years, recent pieces
or even created in situ.
Vient le temps, aujourd’hui, de nous tourner vers un galeriste, et
à travers lui de rendre hommage à cette profession dont le travail
souvent méconnu n’en est pas moins essentiel pour l’art.
Notre invité, Emmanuel Perrotin, compte parmi les galeristes les
plus reconnus, tant pour la force de ses choix artistiques que pour
son exigence mêlée d’instinct.
En revenant sur son parcours pour le moins fascinant, nous
présentons au Tripostal, une sélection d’artistes avec lesquels il
a travaillé, d’autres qu’il accompagne depuis toujours, d’autres
encore qu’il expose actuellement.
Dans cette histoire de la Galerie Perrotin, on croise des icônes de
l’art contemporain, tels Maurizio Cattelan ou Takashi Murakami.
De célèbres artistes internationaux comme de belles découvertes.
Des œuvres qui ont marqué les 30 dernières années comme des
pièces récentes voire créées in situ.
The exhibition spaces of the Tripostal reflect 25 years of artistic and
human adventure, eclectic and exemplary choices and risk-taking. Let

25 ans de galerie cela paraît long et pourtant cela passe très vite. J’ai
commencé à travailler à 16 ans, à 17 ans pour la Galerie Charles
Cartwright et à 21 ans j’ai fondé ma propre galerie. J’ai maintenant
45 ans et bientôt 30 ans de travail derrière moi.
malgré sa longue maladie faisait d’elle un exemple. Elle aurait été
contente de visiter cette exposition. C’est aussi la sienne.
Cette exposition m’amène à me retourner sur le chemin parcouru, mais
j’espère qu’elle marque pour moi aussi une nouvelle étape. On exerce
généralement le métier de galeriste jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Cela me
laisse je l’espère 25 ans de beaux projets !
L’invitation qui m’a été faite est enfin un bel hommage au métier de
galeriste, une profession méritante. Cette exposition apportée par une
institution publique à une galerie privée est courageuse. On a souvent
opposé le système institutionnel et le marché privé au lieu de nous inciter
à collaborer, mais les choses vont en s’améliorant. Ces rapprochements
sont bénéfiques à tous, et surtout aux artistes.
C’est triste de devoir organiser son anniversaire soi-même. Alors,
quand Martine Aubry et Didier Fusillier ont eu la gentillesse de m’inviter
à Lille, j’ai trouvé là une très belle occasion. En me confiant le Tripostal ;
un espace de 6000m2 ils m’ont donné l’opportunité de présenter à la
fois les artistes avec qui j’ai partagé un bout de chemin et ceux qui font
partie de la programmation actuelle de ma galerie.
Il y a sans doute un peu de coquetterie à se retourner sur son parcours.
Mais aussi des remises en question. J’oscille entre la fierté de collaborer
avec des artistes importants et le regret d’avoir raté certaines occasions.
Maintenant je vous laisse découvrir l’univers qui m’entoure et j’espère
vous faire partager ma passion. Chers visiteurs, je vous souhaite
beaucoup de plaisirs et d’émotions.
Lorsque plusieurs artistes de notre galerie rencontrent le succès, on se
plaît à penser que nous avons notre part de mérite. Ce ne serait plus
la chance qui nous guide mais un instinct affûté. Le choix des artistes
est déterminant mais quand on s’engage avec eux, au début de leur
carrière, nous n’avons que très peu d’éléments pour nous faire une
idée : le peu d’œuvres déjà créés, les projets non réalisés, le discours,
la passion, le charisme, la prétention, la modestie, l’entourage, la
détermination, l’éthique, une capacité à collaborer... Voilà ce qui nous
aide à nous décider. Si beaucoup de ces critères conviennent on doit
déterminer si la galerie est capable de développer ce potentiel.
On espère toujours que l’entrée d’un artiste dans la galerie marquera
une nouvelle étape pour lui. On lui apporte un contexte et des outils
pour grandir, et - on l’espère - dans une bonne direction.

25 years of running a gallery seems long and yet it goes by very quickly.
I started working at the age of 16 or 17 for the Charles Cartwright
Gallery and when I was 21 I started my own gallery. Now I am 45 and
have almost a 30-year career behind me.
It’s sad to have to organise your own birthday. So when Martine Aubry
and Didier Fusillier were kind enough to invite me to Lille, the offer was
too good to turn down. By handing over the Tripostal to me, a 6000
m2 space, they gave me the opportunity to present both the artists who
have been part of my career along the way and those who are part of
the current programming at my gallery.
Cela n’est pas toujours évident. Le succès incroyable de certains
artistes de la galerie fait oublier aux yeux du public les risques que
l’on continue de prendre. Sans certains chefs de file, il serait impossible
d’offrir les mêmes ressources de développement pour les autres artistes.
There is undoubtedly a touch of pretension involved in doing a
retrospective. But also a questioning of things. I fluctuate between pride
for having worked with important artists and regret for having missed
some opportunities.
Les rapports de forces qui existent entre marchands expliquent la
volonté de certains d’entre nous à prendre tous les risques pour ne pas
perdre les artistes. Nos galeries s’agrandissent, ouvrent des espaces à
l’étranger. Nous participons à un nombre exponentiel de foires (douze
par an dans notre cas). Nous organisons des dîners et des fêtes un peu
partout, engageons plus d’assistants, plus de directeurs. J’ai bénéficié
jusqu’ici de la fidélité de mes artistes, je les en remercie aujourd’hui.
are opening spaces abroad. We are participating in an exponential
number of fairs (twelve per year in our case). We organize dinners and
parties everywhere, hire more assistants, more directors. Up to now I
have enjoyed the loyalty of my artists, and today I thank them for that.

I have a team that works hard, but I cannot help but think of all the things
we can still improve. I try to give them enough freedom and responsibility
so that they can flourish in the gallery. Most of my directors have been with
me for over ten years. I want to thank them here for their patience and
work. Without them we would not be celebrating this anniversary.

It was hard for me when I started out. The FRAC and the FNAC helped
me a lot in my early years. There are many French collectors and of high
quality. I am deeply grateful to them. A fellow art gallery owner was
essential in my story: Marie-Hélène Montenay, who ran one of the most
interesting galleries of the 90s. She offered to help me when I was only 23
years old. Her generosity and the freedom she gave me were crucial. Her
good humour despite her long illness made her an example. She would
have been happy to visit this exhibition. It is also hers.

This exhibition forces me take a look back on the journey travelled, but I
hope it also marks the start of a new phase for me. One usually practices
the trade of art gallery owner until the end of one’s life. This leaves me,
I hope, with 25 years of great projects ahead! Ultimately, the invitation
extended to me is a wonderful tribute to the craft of the gallery manager,
a worthy profession. This exhibition proposed by a public institution to a
private gallery is courageous. People have often pitted the institutional
system against the private market instead of encouraging us to work
together, but things are getting better. These closer links are beneficial to
all, especially the artists.
Now, I leave you to discover the world in which I live and hope you
will share in my passion. Dear visitors, I wish you lots of pleasure and
emotions.

When several artists of our gallery become successful, we like to
think we share in the merit. That it is not chance that guides us but a
sharp instinct. The choice of artists is crucial but when we engage with
them early in their careers, we have very little to go on: the few works
already created, unrealised projects, their discourse, passion, charisma,
aspirations, modesty, the people around them, determination, ethics, the
ability to collaborate... That’s what helps us decide. While many of
these criteria are suitable, we must determine whether or not the gallery
is able to develop this potential.
We always hope that the artist’s entry into the gallery will be a new step
for him. We are giving him a context and tools to grow and to do so –
we hope – in a good direction.
J’ai une équipe qui travaille beaucoup, mais je ne peux m’empêcher
de penser à toutes les choses que nous pouvons encore améliorer. Je
m’efforce de leur laisser suffisamment de liberté et de responsabilité
pour qu’ils puissent s’épanouir au sein de la galerie. La plupart de
mes directeurs sont avec moi depuis plus de dix ans. Je tiens ici à les
remercier pour leur patience et leur travail. Sans eux nous ne pourrions
pas célébrer cet anniversaire.
Mes débuts ont été difficiles. Les FRAC et le FNAC m’ont beaucoup aidé
dans mes premières années. Les collectionneurs français sont nombreux
et d’une grande qualité. Je leur en suis très reconnaissant. Une consoeur
a été essentielle dans mon histoire : Marie-Hélène Montenay, qui a
dirigé l’une des galeries les plus intéressantes des années 90. Elle m’a
proposé de m’aider alors que je n’avais que 23 ans. Sa générosité et
la liberté qu’elle m’a donnée ont été déterminantes. Sa bonne humeur

Without some big names, it would be impossible to offer other artists the
same resources.
The power relations between dealers explain why some of us are willing

accueille la Galerie Perrotin dans les espaces du Tripostal, à Lille.
Continuing in its series of invitations to large collections (François
Pinault Foundation, Saatchi Gallery, CNAP), lille3000 has invited
the Galerie Perrotin to take over the spaces of the Tripostal in Lille.
Cette exposition sera l’occasion de rendre compte de la vision
d’un galeriste français, Emmanuel Perrotin, à travers une sélection d’œuvres d’artistes qu’il a exposés tout au long de son parcours depuis 25 ans, œuvres pour la plupart issues de collections
publiques ou privées.
This exhibition will be an opportunity to take stock of the vision of
a French gallery owner, Emmanuel Perrotin, through a selection
of works by artists whom he has exhibited all through his 25-year
career, works that for the most part are held in public or private
collections.
Les grands plateaux du Tripostal permettront de présenter plus d’une centaine d’œuvres : des sculptures et installations monumentales de Wim Delvoye, Daniel Firman et
Tatiana Trouvé, des mobiles de Lionel Estève, «La Filature»
et «Vingt ans après» de Sophie Calle, «INRI» de Maurizio
Cattelan, des œuvres spécialement conçues pour le lieu par
Gelitin, Guy Limone, Pieter Vermeersch. D’autres salles réuniront
des artistes japonais dont Aya Takano, Mr et Chiho Aoshima.
De nombreux artistes français seront représentés dont Bernard
Frize, JR, Kolkoz, Ange Leccia, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Philippe
Parreno, Claude Rutault, Xavier Veilhan et Jean-Luc Vilmouth.
Le public découvrira également deux sculptures du duo nordique
Elmgreen & Dragset et un film projeté sur grand écran de Jesper Just.
The large open spaces of the Tripostal will accommodate more
than one hundred works:sculptures and monumental installations
by Wim Delvoye, Daniel Firman and Tatiana Trouvé, mobiles by
Lionel Estève, «La Filature» and «Vingt ans après» by Sophie Calle,
the famous «INRI» by Maurizio Cattelan and works specially designed for the venue by Gelitin, Guy Limone and Pieter Vermeersch.
Other rooms will feature works by Japanese artists such as Aya
Takano, Mr and Chiho Aoshima. Many French artists will be represented, including Bernard Frize, JR, Kolkoz, Ange Leccia, JeanMichel Othoniel, Philippe Parreno, Claude Rutault, Xavier Veilhan
and Jean-Luc Vilmouth. Visitors will also discover two sculptures by
the Scandinavian artists Elmgreen & Dragset as well as a film by
Jesper Just projected onto a large screen.
— Emmanuel Perrotin, né en 1968, ouvre sa première galerie à
Paris en 1989 dans un appartement du Marais à Paris près du
Centre Pompidou. Après avoir investi neuf lieux de 1989 à 2005,
la galerie est aujourd’hui installée dans un hôtel particulier Rue
de Turenne. En 2012, il ouvre une deuxième galerie à Hong
Kong. Une troisième a été inaugurée en septembre à New York.
— Born in 1968, Emmanuel Perrotin opened his first gallery in Paris
in 1989 in an apartment in the Marais district of Paris, near the
Pompidou Centre. After having occupied nine places from 1989
to 2005, the gallery is now housed in a mansion in the Rue de
Turenne. In 2012, he opened a second gallery in Hong Kong. A
third will opened in September in New York.

À 17 ans, il devient l’assistant du jeune galeriste Charles Cartwright
qui travaille alors avec des artistes comme Marina Abramovic ou
Alighero Boetti. Autodidacte passionné, Emmanuel Perrotin est un
dénicheur de talents. En 1991, il organise la première exposition
commerciale de Damien Hirst dans le monde, puis en 1992 présente le subversif Maurizio Cattelan ; l’année d’après, il débute
sa collaboration avec Takashi Murakami. Depuis, il représente
aussi Johan Creten, Klara Kristalova, Kaws, Farhad Moshiri,
Gianni Motti, Paola Pivi... —
He got his start in the contemporary art world at the young
age of 17, when he became the assistant of the young dealer
Charles Cartwright, who was already working with artists such as
Marina Abramovic or Alighero Boetti. Passionate and self-taught,
Emmanuel Perrotin proved to have an eye for talent. In 1991, he organised the first ever commercial exhibition of Damien Hirst’s work,
then in 1992 presented the subversive Maurizio Cattelan; the following year, he began his collaboration with Takashi Murakami.

La Caisse d'Epargne Nord France Europe accueille
quatre photographies du duo d'artistes Kolkoz. Équipés
de leurs appareils numériques, ils capturent des façades
d’immeubles modestes et construisent une image par
la multiplication, l’empilement et la combinaison,
proposant ainsi des tours virtuelles qui rivalisent
avec celles des grandes compagnies internationales.
The Caisse d’Epargne Nord France Europe will be hosting
four photographs by the artistic duo Kolkoz. Equipped with
their digital cameras, the artists photograph the facades of
modest buildings and using techniques of multiplication,
stacking and combination they construct images of virtual
towers to rival those of major international companies.

Paola Pivi’s spectacular and improbable photographs offer
us an untypical view of reality in which zebras, ostriches,
donkeys, bears or leopards claim dominion over worlds that
are foreign to them. Discover two of her XXL artworks on the
facades of these train stations: Lille Flandres and Gare du
Nord in Paris.

Européenne de la Culture, le Tripostal, ancien bâtiment
industriel de 6 000 m2, initialement consacré au tri du
courrier, s’impose aujourd’hui comme un centre culturel
incontournable.
The Tripostal, formerly an industrial building and postal sorting
facility, was converted into a 6000 m² exhibition space for Lille
2004 European Capital of Culture. Since then it has established
itself as a leading cultural venue.

original work: real riding outfits (horses

exhibition. This Viennese artist collective
is fond of using recycled materials they
assemble into pop-style sculptures and
installations. Their performances are
known to take the form of crass and
mischievous antics.
The Stairway to Tripostal
also proposes several ApéroLive evenings on Fridays and

Dans le cadre des 25 ans de la Galerie Perrotin, lille3000 accueille
à la Gare Saint Sauveur plusieurs installations monumentales des
artistes chinois : Sun Yuan & Peng Yu.
Leurs œuvres aux allures provocatrices prennent comme sujet
les questions complexes de notre époque contemporaine. S’ils
figurent parmi les artistes les plus controversés en Chine - ayant
recours à un hyperréalisme poignant et dérangeant - leurs
installations donnent une vision de la condition humaine au sein
du monde moderne, malmenant nos croyances et pointant du
doigt nos craintes enfouies pour mieux les mettre au jour.
Utilisant de la graisse humaine, des ordures ou des animaux
vivants, parodiant les figures leader du pouvoir, leurs œuvres sont
autant de défis envers les systèmes de valeur, les préjugés liés
au conditionnement social, les relations ambiguës entre l’Orient
et l’Occident. Tandis que leurs « machines toutes puissantes », à
la virtuosité technique, ont un pouvoir signifiant de la société de
consommation en dérive.
C’est avec un humour sombre qu’ils explorent intensément la vie
et la mort dans des situations étranges, déstabilisantes. Un autre
trouble, pour mieux le dépasser.
As part of the Galerie Perrotin’s 25th anniversary, lille3000 is
hosting several monumental installations by the Chinese artists Sun
Yuan & Peng Yu at the Gare Saint Sauveur.
Their works come across as provocative takes on complex issues
of our contemporary era. Although they are among the most
controversial artists in China – with a style marked by a poignant
and disturbing hyperrealism – their installations express a vision of
the human condition set in the modern world.
Using human fat, rubbish or live animals, parodying figures of
powerful leaders, their works are so many challenges to value
systems, socially conditioned prejudices, and the ambiguous
relations between East and West. While their “all-powerful
machines”, characterised by their technical virtuosity, act as
metaphors for a consumer society that has lost its way.
With dark humour, they intensely probe life and death in strange,
destabilizing situations. Generating a different disquiet so as to
better overcome the existing one.

requête d’Emmanuel Perrotin, un détective privé de
l’agence Duluc m’a suivie le 16 avril 2001. »

to a detective agency. She hired them to follow
me, to report my daily activities, and to provide
photographic evidence of my existence. Twenty years
later, on April 2001, I was followed by a private
detective of the Duluc agency who had been hired by
Emmanuel Perrotin. »

mondrian déclare dans un article publié dans
la revue de stijl en 1919-1920: «... les toiles des
peintres naturalistes s’accordent, elles aussi, avec
le mur, avec la forme rectangulaire d’une pièce
d’habitation, mais il faudrait ne pas regarder ce qui
se passe à l’intérieur du cadre! il vaudrait mieux
retourner ces peintures face contre le mur afin de les
utiliser simplement comme des éléments de division
du mur. La première actualisation de ma réplique
a lieu à l’occasion d’une exposition personnelle au
musée de nantes en 1994. la toile de référence est
« composition losangique avec deux lignes noires»
de 1931. Le châssis est construit selon la composition
du tableau, la toile peinte de la même couleur que le
mur accrochée retournée contre le mur. apparaissent
dès lors les entretoises du châssis restituant les deux
lignes du mondrian.

in an article published in the journal de stijl in 19191920, mondrian states :
«… the canvases of naturalist painters echo the shape
of the wall, as well as the rectangular shape of a
room, but what happens within the frame should be
disregarded! it would be better to turn these paintings
against the wall and use them simply as elements to
divide it up.»
the first actualization of my replica was done for
a solo exhibition at the nantes museum in 1994.
the painting it refers to is «lozenge composition
with two black lines» (1931). my actualization
replicates mondrian’s shape, with the inside stretchers
corresponding to the positions of the lines, while the
canvas itself is painted the same color as the wall
and is hung facing it.
