Chers paroissiens et paroissiennes,
Notre communauté de foi Immaculée Conception et Saint-Philippe a un long et
riche passé. Le 19e siècle a connu l’établissement dans cette région d’une
importante colonie française qui fut, avec le temps, desservie par deux paroisses.
Avec le passage des ans, nous avons vu la fusion de ces deux paroisses en une
seule. Quoique ces années aient été très difficiles pour plusieurs, notre foi nous
permettra de relever ce défi.
C’est pourquoi en cette “ Année de la foi ”, il est très approprié de célébrer notre
paroisse et notre foi. Unis dans le Christ, nous pouvons nous tourner vers l’avenir
avec espoir. Les travaux effectués à l’église expriment notre confiance et notre foi en Dieu et en sa
Providence. Nos ancêtres ont construit l’église de la région à la sueur de leur front. À notre tour maintenant
de prendre le flambeau et de faire notre part.
Cependant, une église n’est pas une paroisse. C’est un lieu de rencontre où se réunissent ceux et celles qui
forment la paroisse. Cet album rend hommage aux fidèles qui font de la paroisse Immaculée Conception et
Saint-Philippe le foyer de leur foi. Je suis fier d’être votre curé et de travailler avec vous tous pour le peuple
de Dieu.

Our faith community of Immaculée Conception and Saint-Philippe has a long and colourful history.
In the 19th century, we saw the establishment of a substantial French settlement in this area that was
eventually served by two parishes. As time passed, we have seen the amalgamation of these parishes into
one. Although this has been a difficult time for many, our faith will see us through.
In this “Year of Faith”, it is therefore most appropriate for us to celebrate our parish and faith. United in
Christ, we can look to the future with hope. The repairs we are making to the church building express our
confidence and trust in God and his Providence. Our ancestors worked hard to build up the Church in our
region. We are now asked to do our part.
However, a building is not a parish. It is the meeting place where those who form the parish come together.
This directory testifies to those who find the faith home at Immaculée Conception and Saint-Philippe. I am
proud to be your pastor and to work with all of you for the good of God’s people.

Paroisse Immaculée Conception Parish
En 1851, Mgr de Charbonnel, évêque de Toronto, chargea le curé Claude-Antoine Ternet de faire construire une chapelle
à Pain Court, sur le site en face du cimetière actuel. La fondation officielle de la paroisse de l’Immaculée Conception
remonte à l’année 1853, lorsque l’abbé Jean-Thomas Raynel, vint prendre charge de la paroisse de Saint-Pierre et de
deux de ses missions annexes, Pain Court et Grande Pointe.
La première église de l’Immaculée Conception que le père Raynel avait construite avec tant de peine fut détruite par
le feu pendant la nuit du 4 mai 1874. Le curé J.-Calixte Duprat se mit à rassembler des fonds pour la construction d’une
nouvelle église. Le monument qui se trouve encore aujourd’hui dans le cimetière marquait l’entrée de cette église.
Malheureusement, les injures du temps et l’intempérie des saisons ont ruiné ce beau temple avant le temps.
Mgr Michel F. Fallon nomma le père Alfred-David Emery curé de Pain Court, précisément pour y construire une nouvelle
église et un nouveau presbytère. La pierre angulaire de cette troisième église fut bénite le 11 juin 1911. C’est le lieu où se
trouve l’église actuelle. Le samedi 2 janvier 1937, un autre malheur s’est abattu sur la communauté. En entrant pour
servir la messe, le jeune enfant de chœur Alphé Emery (frère d’Amédée) constata les flammes qui envahissaient l’église.
Le tocsin a sonné pour appeler au secours; les paroissiens accoururent, mais l’incendie avait vite fait ses ravages. La
paroisse se mit tout de suite à l’œuvre pour reconstruire une église qui est l’église actuelle.
En 1999, un projet d’envergure a été entrepris pour remettre l’église paroissiale en bon état. Grâce à l’artiste Achim Klaas
de Cambridge, un tableau de l’Immaculée Conception orne de nouveau le sanctuaire de l’église. Les fonts baptismaux et
l’autel du Saint Sacrement ont été créés dans le marbre des anciens autels et un nouveau maître-autel de chêne massif
sert aujourd’hui au culte divin.
Aujourd’hui, les paroissiens de Pain Court et de Grande Pointe se rassemblent sous le même toit pour pratiquer leur foi.

In 1851, Bishop de Charbonnel, Bishop of Toronto, asked the parish priest, Father Claude-Antoine Ternet, to have a
chapel built in Pain Court, on the site across the present cemetery. The official foundation of Immaculée Conception
parish of Pain Court dates back to 1853 when Father Jean-Thomas Raynel took charge of St. Peter’s parish and two of its
annexed missions, Pain Court and Grande Pointe.
The first church of Immaculée Conception that Father Raynel had built with such difficulty was destroyed by fire during
the night of May 4, 1874. Father J.-Calixte Duprat who was the pastor at the time, began gathering funds for the
construction of a new church. The monument still standing in the cemetery marked the entrance of this church.
Unfortunately, the passage of time and the inclemencies of the seasons collaborated to ruin this temple of prayer before
its time.
Bishop Michael F. Fallon assigned Father Alfred-David Emery as pastor of Pain Court, for the specific purpose of having a
new church and rectory built. The cornerstone of this third church (on the site of the actual church) was blessed on June
11, 1911. On Saturday, January 2nd, 1937, the community was stricken by yet another tragedy. Upon entering the church
to serve 8 o’clock mass, young altar server, Alphé Emery (Amédée’s brother) noticed that the church was engulfed in
flames. Parishioners rushed to help put out the fire but the flames had quickly ravaged the building. The parish
immediately began rebuilding the temple of God, which is the actual church.
A major church renovations project was undertaken in 1999. Thanks to the artist Achim Klaas of Cambridge, the mural
of the Immaculate Conception once again adorns the sanctuary of the church. A new baptismal font and the altar of the
Blessed Sacrament were created using the marble from the former altars and mass is now celebrated on a new solid oak
main altar.
The members of the two communities of Pain Court and Grande Pointe, now practice their faith under the same roof.
Paroisse Saint-Philippe Parish
En 1852, le père Claude Antoine Ternet, curé de la paroisse de Saint-Pierre a fait construire une chapelle à Grande
Pointe au coin de la 9e concession et du chemin de Grande Pointe, chapelle dédiée à saint Antoine. En 1882, Mgr
Walsh, deuxième évêque de London, autorisa la construction d’une église au coût de 6 000 $ sur un morceau de
terre, don de MM. Moïse Martin et Joseph Cheff. Cette nouvelle église était dédiée à saint Philippe, apôtre. Ce
bâtiment a servi pendant 67 ans, jusqu’en 1949, où il a été remplacé par une belle construction érigée sur un autre
site, à un mille de distance sur la même 9e concession, au coin du chemin Winterline.
Lorsque le père Euclide Chevalier est arrivé, les tranchées étaient déjà creusées pour cette nouvelle église. Il a
travaillé côte à côte avec les paroissiens et ceux-ci ont beaucoup apprécié ses qualités d’homme sincère et de
travailleur infatigable. La pierre angulaire fut bénie par Mgr Cody le 27 novembre 1949.
Le 1er août 1997, signe des temps, la paroisse Saint-Philippe a fait l’objet de regroupement avec la paroisse
avoisinante de l’Immaculée Conception de Pain Court, sous l’habile tutelle du Père Robert Champagne.
En 2005, le diocèse de London annonce que l’église Saint-Philippe de Grande Pointe sera parmi les 26 églises du
Sud-Ouest dont la fermeture est envisagée. La nouvelle ébranle profondément les paroissiens de Saint-Philippe.
Après avoir été pendant plus de 120 ans un lieu d’enseignement religieux et de célébrations liturgiques, l’église
Saint-Philippe ferme ses portes le dimanche 29 janvier 2007. Mgr Fabbro, évêque de London, y célèbre la dernière
messe. En grand nombre, les paroissiens des communautés de Grande Pointe et de Pain Court ainsi que d’anciens
paroissiens et amis participent à cette ultime célébration eucharistique à l’église Saint-Philippe. Cette célébration
émouvante a fait revivre chez chacun une multitude de doux souvenirs.

In 1852, Father Claude Antoine Ternet, pastor of Saint-Peter’s Parish, built a chapel in Grande Pointe on the corner
of the 9th concession and the Big Pointe Road. In 1882, Bishop Walsh, second bishop of the Diocese of London,
authorized the construction of a church at a cost of $6,000 on a property owned and donated by Moïse Martin and
Joseph Cheff. This new church was dedicated to Saint Philippe, the apostle. This building served the congregation
for 67 years, until 1949, when it was replaced by another church erected on a new site, one mile away on the same
concession, at the corner of the Winter Line Road.
At the arrival of Father Euclide Chevalier, the trenches had been dug for the construction of the new church. Father
worked alongside the parishioners and they were quick to appreciate this sincere man who worked tirelessly. The
cornerstone was blessed by Bishop Cody on November 27th, 1949.
A sign of the times, on August 1st, 1997, the parish of Saint-Philippe was clustered with the neighbouring parish of
Immaculée Conception, under the skilful guardianship of Father Robert Champagne.
In 2005, the Diocese of London announced that Saint-Philippe in Grande Pointe was one of the twenty-six churches
recommended for closure. The news shook the parishioners at their very core. After having been, for more than
120 years, a site of religious teaching and liturgical celebrations, Saint-Philippe Church in Grande Pointe closed its
doors on Sunday, January 29th, 2007. Bishop Fabbro of London officiated at the last mass at 2:00 p.m. Many past
and present parishioners from Grande Pointe and Pain Court, friends and extended family members participated in
this last Eucharistic Celebration. The emotional celebration triggered many fond memories of years gone by.
