Jean-Baptiste Lully, Phaëton, Act 5, Scenes 7– 8. Translated by Elissa Poole
Scene 7 - Chorus
O Dieu qui lancez le Tonnerre,
O God who launches thunder,
Hastez-vois de sauver la Terre:
Hurry, and save the earth:
Nous brulons, nous allons perir;
We’re burning, we’re going to die!
Venez, O Jupiter, venez nous secourir.
Come, O Jupiter, come help us.
Scene 8
Jupiter, Phaeton, Merops, Clymene, Libye, Cleone,
et tous les Acteurs des Scenes precedentes.
Jupiter:
Au bien de l’Univers ta perte est necessaire, For the good of the Universe, your loss is
necessary:
Sers d’exemple aux audacieux;
It will serve as an example to the rash:
Tombe avec ta grandeur, trébuche temeraire, Fall in your pride, you reckless fool,
Laisse en paix la Terre & les Cieux.
Leave in peace both Earth and the Heavens.
Jupiter strikes down Phaeton with a thunderbolt and Phaeton falls.
Clymene & Theone:
O sort fatal!
Merops, Libye, & le Choeur:
O dreadful fate!
O chûte affreuse!
O frightful descent!
O temerité malheureuse!
O unfortunate rashness!
