On October 4 (Mon), a press presentation was made on “A Day of Enthusiasm” Music
Festival 2005 which will be held during the Golden Week next year at the Tokyo International
Forum. In spite of the rain, more than 60 press people got together. It was a great success,
unlike usual press presentations for classical music. Mr. Bernard de Montferrand, the
Ambassador of France in Japan commented, “It is a great honor for us to contribute to this
kind of cultural event where various people can share the joy of music beyond regional
borders.” He made a commitment to give cooperation to the event as the nation of France.
It was Mr. Rene Martin who produced La Folle Journee in a port town, Nantes, France in
1995. He talked about his passion and resolution for the first event in Tokyo as its originator
and promoter.
Exciting Classical Music Lowering the Barrier
“It is said that now is the critical age for classical music. To change this trend, we need to
look at it from a different angle,” said Mr. Rene Martin. When it comes to “classical music,”
what kind of impression does it make on most people and how do they familiarize
themselves with it? If they are not fans of classical music, it may be difficult to understand.
Even if they are fans of it, they may have the impression that they have to listen to it in a
formal stiff manner in expensive reserved seats of a concert hall.
“I want to present people with classical music not in a concert form which is constrained by
convention but in a new style. I want to make it a festival for all audiences, including adults,
children, people who love classical music and people who don’t.” “To realize this, I am
stickling to lower the price of the ticket. In the first Tokyo event, we could lower the price to
¥1,500 per concert. I want everybody to experience a first-class real performance in a
casual manner.”
Only Beethoven - About 150 Concerts of One Theme!
In addition to the lower price, another characteristic point of La Folle Journee is the “theme
setting.” “It is a one-time music festival in one town. We decide on 1 theme for every year.
The theme of this year is “Beethoven & His Fellows.” About 150 concerts will be performed in
3 days from morning to evening simultaneously at all halls. The number of participating
artists is about 500 from Europe and about 500 from Japan and other Asian countries. More
than 1,000 first-class artists who agreed to the concept of the music festival will get
together from all over the world.”
From Japan, eminent artists will participate: pianists; Ms. Akiko Ebi, Ms. Michie Koyama and
Ms. Ikuyo Nakamichi, violinists; Mr. Daishin Kashimoto, Ms. Sayaka Shoji, Ms. Akiko Suwanai,
viola; Ms. Nobuko Imai, cellist; Mr. Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. Mr. Rene Martin, who gives high marks
for Japanese artists, says, “There are amazing things in the well-rounded musical education
and this is the result. There are many artists in Japan who give stimulation to the music
scene of today.” In addition to the plan of price and theme, the fact that there are good
artists in Japan may be another reason to assure the success in Tokyo.
Energetic Power of Tokyo which Overflows to Other Towns
“I believe the event in Tokyo will give favorable influence to other cities, Nantes, Bilbao and
Lisbon, and the past experiences in Europe will help the musical scene in Tokyo. The venue
of Tokyo will be wider and larger than any other places. The dynamism that first-class artists
and general audiences will meet and come in contact must be the best. I want people to
participate in the event rather than listen to it. I want people to find out something and
want to learn more about music through this music festival. I want people to awaken their
passion and curiosity and to further fly them out of the frame of La Folle Journee. These are
my wishes.” Classical music can be enjoyed in a casual manner. The barrier between the
stage and the audience must be lowered unlimitedly.
Iwao Toriumi:
President, Tokyo International Forum
It is a great honor that the French Government and Mr. Martin have chosen the
Tokyo International Forum. The management concept of the Forum is “Impression
Creation Company.” Our company is located on the prime side of the center of
Tokyo and it is now a facility that collects more than 18 million people in a year. I
will give my full support as an organizer to the passion of Mr. Martin and to the
enthusiasm of artists to make people familiarize themselves with classical music. I
would also appreciate having participants’ warm support and cooperation.
Kunihiko Takahashi:
General Producer / Operating Officer, Tokyo International Forum
La Folle Journee Music Festival may be virtually unknown in Japan. Absurdly low
price and feeling of oneness of artists and audience are the biggest
characteristic points. While our Forum will be the main venue for this Tokyo event,
it will be a giant event by involving the surrounding 120 hectare regions such as
Otemachi, Marunouchi and Yurakucho. I would like participants to experience new
joy and impression of classical music beyond the conventional common sense.
Masahide Kajimoto:
Artistic Producer / President, Kajimoto Concert Management Co., Ltd.
I am sure Mr. Martin’s unique idea and philosophy will bring a breath of fresh air to
the Japanese classical music industry. As a venue where many concerts can be
simultaneously performed, the Tokyo International Forum is ideal. I believe this
very unique music festival will take root for years as a Tokyo institution. Without
breaking down something old, nothing new will be born. Dare to break down an
established thing by yourself. I am very happy that this challenge was taken.

3 Days Full of Adventure and Findings. Moments When You Want to Jump for Joy.
Yasuo Taniguchi : Editorial Department, “Mostly Classic,” The Sankei Shimbun
Not only arranging tickets and hotels, but even a package tour in which visiting notable and
historic sites and purchasing places of souvenirs are predetermined or a trip when you plan
everything by yourself including the location of hotels and details of rental cars, holds the
enjoyment of waiting for departure day, counting down the days, anticipating the scenes
you may encounter. Once you plan a journey, it has already started. I get this feeling of
excitement when I look at the timetable of “La Folle Journee au Japon - “A Day of
Enthusiasm” Music Festival 2005,” in which each hall is named in association with Beethoven
and clearly color-coded Let’s take a 3 day trip full of adventures and findings. It holds
boundless potentialities such as gaining a deep joy from music.
First, “Symphony No. 5,” “Symphony No. 6 - Pastorale,” “Symphony No. 9,” and
then …
When you hear Beethoven, or classical music, the first thing
which comes to mind may be Symphony No. 5 and Symphony
No. 9. There is hardly anyone who does not know the tune
beginning with the stunning sound “rat-a-tat-aaa” and “Ode
to Joy” which you will literally be excited about. However, for
symphonies which one performing time takes about one hour,
very few people have listened to all of them and have been
warmed by them in their hearts. There may be a lot of
masterpiece novels you wanted to read at some time but you
have never had it in your hand, such as “Kari” by Ogai Mori,
“Kokoro” by Soseki Natsume, “Anya-Koro” by Naoya Shiga,
“Makioka Sisters” by Jun-ichiro Tanizaki and “Snow Country” by
Yasunari Kawabata. La Folle Journee is the best opportunity in
which one of your longstanding ambitions may be realized.
Among the super famous symphonies performed in 3 days,
there are “Symphony No. 5,” “Symphony No. 6 - Pastorale”
and “Symphony No. 9.” Just being different in work number by two, “Missa solemnis” did not
have many opportunities to be performed although it was said to be one of Beethoven’s 2
big masterpieces. “Missa solemnis” will be performed everyday, but on April 30, you can
listen to it together with the other symphonies. Furthermore, you can enjoy violin concertos
everyday. Except for April 30, you can even add “Piano Concerto No. 5 - Emperor” and you
may be very excited about it.
If you listen to all these masterpieces at one time, even beginners can become a “Master of
Beethoven” in one day. It will be a “competition” with different performers and it should be
very interesting to persons of delicate taste. For violin and piano, most-watched artists are
lined up and it is the pride of the program.
Experience of Listening All the Way Through Performances
This time, symphony, concerto, string quartet, cello sonata
and piano sonata will be performed for all numbers. By
listening to Symphony No. 1, even numbered symphonies and
No. 1 and No. 2 piano concerto, you will meet Beethoven who
created joyful music and this will reconfirm his character.
Being compared with “Well-Tempered Clavier” of Bach, piano
sonata is praised as the New Testament of piano. The string
quartet is written from Beethoven’s ambitious younger days
until the sunset of his life where his subtle and profound
ground is represented. Both will be performed for a long time
from 10 o’clock in the morning of the first day until 10 o’clock
at night of the last day, and it will be a wonderful experience
to listen to either of them where all numbers are performed.
Pianists are switched for every number, and you can enjoy a
maximum of 3 artists. It will be a historic event when Ysaye
String Quartet, which is one of the most prestigious quartets, performs all numbers
including Fugue “Grand” during the 3 days, and it will be a breathtaking performance with 2
zykluses performed simultaneously.
Even if you drop in during your spare time, I am sure new encounters of the numbers and
artists will be waiting for you regardless of your well-acquainted/non-acquainted music
knowledge
Experience of Chamber Music
In addition to symphony concerts in huge Hall A or C, “La Folle
Journee” prepares for the joy of sharing music with the
breathing of artists in small halls for about 200 audiences.
The smaller the organization, the naked human feelings of
the composer, Beethoven is included more heavily and by
layering the deep feeling of the performers, it becomes full of
delicate nuances.
The first work Beethoven sent out to the world was a piano
trio. Starting with string trio and quintet for piano and brass
instruments, the works in the beginning hide bold attempts.
Both for classical music experts and beginners, chamber
music may not be very familiar, but at La Folle Journee where
artists augustly run through the venue and fresh music is
created in turn, there is a world which is unconnected with
old-fashioned boredom. The violin sonata in which great
artists and super performers will jointly perform for the first
time is also attracting much interest.
Let’s Find a “New Continent”
Listening to unknown masterpiece works of the specialized composer and works of
composers hidden behind great composers ? this is a representation of unlimited affection
toward music as well as amazing insight of Mr. Rene Martin, the originator of La Folle Journee
and a music director.
Starting with “Funeral Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II,” there may be a lot of fans
who want to listen to all works that are hardly recorded. Hummel, Czerny, Spohr, Clementi
and Salieri are still famous. You should not miss the works of these mentors who influenced
Beethoven and composers and pianists who were either rivals or supporters. They are listed
in several parts of the program.
It is very good to listen to Wilms’ symphony in the real performance of Concerto Koln who
made a CD of it and will first visit Japan. You can also listen to Eberl’s symphony while only
his small works are usually performed in piano recitals. It is filled with many moments when
you want to jump for joy.

Enjoy Merry Gorgeous Operetta at New Year’s Time
A famous theater of Eastern Europe which Bulgar, a country of songs is proud of, will visit
Japan again with total members of 170. The operetta performed by them is wonderfully set
and highly original. Especially the balance of the songs, dancing and performance is
exquisite. All the characters act in an elegant and sophisticated manner, but their
conversation is casual and sounds happy. The level of their performance has an established
reputation. This year, they will perform two of the most popular operettas. The operetta “Die
Fledermaus” which takes place on the stage of the masquerade and romantic love story
“Merry Widow,” will be presented.

dancing. That is TAP DOGS.

Merry and Tasty Food Workshop
This is a general exhibition where helpful information, foods and skills for living are gathered,
aiming for improvement of dietary life at home and in each region. “Food education” means
that each consumer will correctly understand the information about food and to cultivate
the ability to consider and judge foods. The first fair last year became a topic of
conversation due to an unofficial participation by Prime Minister Koizumi. In addition to “Miso
Soup Cafe” which was popular previously, events such as “Gestation Test” in which
degeneration of gestation can be seen and “Cooking Class for Children” are also planned. It
is a hands-on type event where people from children to the aged can touch, eat and enjoy.
A “Food Education Workshop” will be held with the themes of food cultures such as “Honey
of the Japanese Honeybee” and “Tofu made of Ozenuma Soybeans.” Please participate in it
with your children.

“Naming Relay Rights” of Glass Wing
“CHANEL LUMIERE” 2nd Version Being
Exhibited!
The “Naming Relay Rights” was started when the
Tokyo International Forum was privatized in 2003.
It is a novel plan in which the sub-name title of the
glass wing is relayed by a number of corporations.
This year, it was named “CHANEL LUMIERE” and
from April to May this year, a total length of
approximately 180 meters of advertisement, the
largest scale in Japan, appeared at the wall side of
the glass wing. This must still be fresh in your memory.
The new second version of it appeared at the glass wing from November 16.
The person who worked on the visual effects of the advertisement was a designer of
CHANEL, Mr. Karl Lagerfeld himself. It was a work designed especially for the Tokyo
International Forum. The display this time was designed for the commemoration of the
opening of the CHANEL Ginza Building, and in the panel, set at the entrance of the glass
wing, the days until the opening day of the building is being counted down.
“Lumiere” means “light” in French. When you visit the venue, please take a close look at the
light advertisement illuminated from sunset until midnight. It will be displayed until December
25 (Sat).
The Renewed Mark was Awarded the “2005 Good Design Award”
Since the renewal in July last year, the guiding mark of the public space, which has been
well-accepted and received comments such as, “It became more accessible” and “The
atmosphere became brighter,” was awarded the Good Design Award (G-Mark) in the
Communication Design section. The new marks were made more clearly visible so you can
see the entrance even from a location in the venue 200 meters away and also aimed to
activate the large space. When it was awarded, it was said, “The traffic line of the venue
became clearer and this provides a solid benefit to the participants. It is a communication
design which really functions well and it enhances the attractiveness of the facility.” We will
do our best to provide facilities which are helpful, accessible and friendly to participants.

T. I. F. Stories
By Tatsumi Shinoda (Selection Director for Tokyo International Forum Artwork)
Artworks Gathered in “Ship of Diversity” 5
John Duff
The form was made by glass fiber and then
colored. The light was confined inside the slightly
transparent work.
Although the color of his works is somber and dull,
it has an interesting taste. The form is responding
to it but is not showy. It is probably the artist’s
most favorite color and size.
I feel a moving energy from his work. It is like a pet
which was ordered permanently to “Stay.”
Duff’s living space and atelier was in an old building located in a small alley of China Town in
New York. People who come and go on the large streets and small alleys are all Asian.
I am a bit surprised at his strange living place, but we finished our errands, and then Duff
brought me to a place located in China Town. What was it like? It was a cafe bar, but there
were no Asian people at all. It was like a bar which you can see in Western movies. I thought
he was never easy in China Town and then understood the diversity of his works.
His atelier was decorated just with a plastic cover in an aging large room next to his living
space. He is always drinking cranberry juice which is supposed to wash away the poison of
chemical sprays.
Looking pale is a characteristic of New York artists. Duff, however, was brought up on the
West Coast. He showed me pictures of his then-family which were in the catalog of his early
age personal exhibition. The atmosphere of the picture looks like one of his works which the
Tokyo International Forum obtained.
In the old picture which was taken in a living room, a fishing net which I thought was hanging
from the ceiling, was actually sticking up from the floor. A series of spindle forms reminds me
of the work in the Forum.
The net reflected his works is not at all disconnected from Duff, himself, since he was surfing
in his boyhood on the West Coast. He must have included the stuck-up net as he saw it at
the beach.
Duff’s works are crossing his time of memory and current space-time.
