„Es gibt 100 000 Möglichkeiten, wie man ein Konzert schreiben kann. Ich habe auch viele Fassungen angefangen, die
komplett anders geworden wären, wenn ich sie weitergeführt hätte. Letztlich habe ich lange experimentiert, bis mir klar
war, welchen Ton, welche Stimmung ich dem Ganzen geben möchte. Den Titel ,Windfall‘ fand ich dann passend als
Synonym für den Glücksfall, so ein Konzert verwirklichen zu können. Überhaupt bin ich ein glücklicher Mensch, weil ich so
viele verschiedene künstlerische Sachen machen darf.“ (Pascal Schumacher)
Eine Pascal Schumacher hat es gut. Die Freiheiten, für das Vibrafon ein Concerto zu schreiben, sind wesentlich größer
als etwa beim Klavier oder der Geige. Es gibt nicht viele Vorbilder und Referenzen, die man beachten muss. Die
stilistischen Traditionen von Neuer Musik und Jazz lassen die Ausdrucksformen offen, während das Orchester als
Klangkörper zum Variabelsten gehört, was die Musikwelt zu bieten hat. Und Schumacher gehört zu den besten
Vibrafonisten seiner Generation. Der 35jährige Luxemburger hat bei Koryphäen wie Gary Burton oder David Friedman
gelernt, mit Visionären von Francesco Tristano bis Michael Wollny gearbeitet. Er hat eigene Projekte wie Pascal
Schumacher „Solo“ oder das Trio KhaliféSchumacherTristano am Start, wurde bereits vielfach ausgezeichnet und lehrt
am Conservatoire de Luxembourg klassische Percussion und Jazzvibrafon.
Pascal Schumacher ist eine Autorität seines Fachs, aber auch jemand, der gerne experimentiert. Das ist eine
Voraussetzung dafür, neues musikalisches Terrain zu betreten. Denn das „Windfall Concerto“ ist auch ein Wagnis. Rund
acht Monate hat Schumacher daran gearbeitet, nachdem ihm die Philharmonie Luxembourg mit einem
Kompositionsauftrag den passenden Rahmen geschaffen hatte.
Vieles fließt in die Musik mit ein, Erfahrungen beispielsweise aus Engagements in verschiedenen Orchestern, auch ein
vorangegangenes Stummfilmprojekt, das ihn als Komponist und Solist mit großen Ensembles zusammengebracht hat.
Man erahnt Vorbilder der Gestaltung, einen Hauch Minimalismus amerikanischer Schule etwa, viel jungromantische
Opulenz, zuweilen ein wenig Pathos im Umgang mit dem voluminösen Klang. Aber es wird auch deutlich, dass etwas
Besonderes entstanden ist, eine Symbiose von klassischer Ernsthaftigkeit und jazzmusikalischer Leichtigkeit, von
Klarheit und Flow, Vielfalt und Intuition. Denn das „Windfall Concerto“ hat diese besondere Kraft des melodisch
Unmittelbaren, die aus Musik ein Erlebnis macht.

„Quand vous écrivez un concert, une infinité de possibilités s’offrent à vous. J’ai aussi commencé beaucoup de versions
qui m’auraient emmené dans une direction complètement différente si je m’étais aventuré dans cette voie-là. Pour finir,
j’ai beaucoup expérimenté, jusqu’à ce que je sache clairement quel ton et quelle atmosphère que je souhaitais donner à
l’ensemble. Je trouve que le titre « Windfall » correspond parfaitement au résultat parce qu’il renvoie au grand plaisir que
c’est de pouvoir réaliser un tel concert. Pouvoir expérimenter autant de choses différentes dans le domaine artistique, en
fait, ça fait vraiment de moi un homme heureux.“ (Pascal Schumacher)
Pascal Schumacher a bien de la chance. Quand on écrit un concerto pour vibraphone, on est bien plus libre qu’au piano ou
au violon, par exemple. Il n’y a pas tellement de références à respecter. Les traditions stylistiques de la nouvelle musique et
du jazz laissent toute la place à l’expression. Le corps de résonance que forme l’orchestre, lui, constitue ce que le monde
musical possède de plus variable. Et Schumacher compte parmi les vibraphonistes les plus doués de sa génération. Ce
Luxembourgeois de 35 ans a fait son apprentissage auprès de maîtres tels que Gary Burton ou David Friedman et a joué
aux côtés de visionnaires comme Francesco Tristano ou encore Michael Wollny. Il travaille en ce moment sur des projets
personnels tels que Pascal Schumacher « Solo » ou au sein du trio KhaliféSchumacherTristano, a déjà reçu de
nombreuses récompenses et enseigne les percussions classiques et le vibraphone jazz au Conservatoire de
Luxembourg.
Dans son domaine, Pascal Schumacher est une autorité, ce qui ne l’empêche pas d’expérimenter avec joie. Cette attitude
d’aventurier est nécessaire pour se lancer à la découverte de nouveaux terrains musicaux. Car le « Windfall Concerto » est
une aventure, justement: Schumacher y a travaillé pendant huit mois environ après que la Philharmonie Luxembourg lui a
passé commande d’une composition, lui fournissant un cadre adapté à sa création.
On retrouve dans sa musique de nombreuses influences: des engagements passés au sein de différents orchestres, un
projet de film muet qui l’a fait entrer en contact avec de grands ensembles à la fois en tant que compositeur et soliste. On
devine l’influence de certains modèles dans la structure: un soupçon de minimalisme à l’américaine par exemple,
beaucoup d’opulence postromantique, parfois un touche de pathos qui vient se mêler aux amples sonorités. Mais à
l’écoute, on est surtout frappé par l’individualité de ce concerto qui marie si bien sérieux classique et légèreté du jazz,
clarté et fluidité, diversité et intuition. En effet, le « Windfall Concerto » possède une force particulière, une immédiateté
mélodique, celle-là même qui fait de toute musique une aventure.

„There are 100,000 ways you can compose a concerto. I have started out with various musical settings that would have
turned out completely differently if I would have continued to work on them. Lastly, I have spent a lot of time
experimenting until it was clear to me which tone, which voicing was the one I wanted to give to the whole. For me the title
“Windfall” is an appropriate synonym for the serendipity of realizing such a concerto. Basically I’m lucky, since I’m allowed
to be involved in such a variety of artistic endeavors.“ (Pascal Schumacher)
Pascal Schumacher has it good. The freedom one has when writing a concerto for vibraphone is substantially more than
composing one for piano or violin. There are not many reference points that one can look towards. The stylistic traditions
of new music and jazz leave the form of expression open, while, as a body of sound, the orchestra is one of the most
variable that the music world has to offer. Schumacher is one of the best vibraphonists of his generation. The 35 year
old Luxembourger studied with such major players as Gary Burton and David Friedman, and has worked with such
visionaries as Francesco Tristano and Michael Wollny. He is involved in his own projects, such as Pascal Schumacher
“Solo”, and the KhaliféSchumacherTristano trio. Schumacher has received a number of awards for his music, and teaches
classical percussion and jazz vibraphone at the Conservatoire de Luxembourg.
Pascal is an authority in his field, but he is also someone who loves to experiment. Composing the “Windfall Concerto” was
an opportunity to break new musical ground. It was also an adventure. After the Luxembourg Philharmonic had come up
with the right framework by commissioning a composition, Schumacher worked on the piece some eight months.
Many influences have seeped into Pascal’s music; for instance there is his experience in a variety of orchestras, as well
as a silent film project in which Schumacher assembled a large ensemble, composed the music and soloed. One can
surmise the influences on the composition: a touch of minimalism from the American school, a lot of youthful romantic
opulence, and an occasional pinch of pathos in dealing with the voluminous sound. It becomes clear that something
special is taking place, a symbiosis of classical seriousness and the lightness of jazz, clarity and flow, variety and
intuition. “Windfall Concerto” has the special strength of melodic immediacy that transforms music into an adventure.
